Dr James Drumm Creator of the Rechargeable Battery The world’s first nickel-zinc rechargeable battery was invented by Co. Down scientist Dr James Drumm. Patented as the ‘Drumm Traction Battery’ it had the ability to discharge and recharge rapidly. After being tested on a train from Dublin to Bray it powered the train successfully from station to station between 1932 and 1948.
