FOLLOW THE FIRST EXPLORATION OF 1906
For centuries, Arctic explorers searched for the Pole and Northwest Passage. Norwegian pioneer Roald Amundsen discovered both; join us as we follow in his wake.
AN ENTIRE POPULATION OF JUST 4 MILLION
The sparse, mainly indigenous communities endure a harsh climate and limited resources, following a traditional lifestyle, all of which shapes their way of life.
A LAND FORMED ALMOST PURELY OF ICE
The Arctic’s ice sheet is a vast expanse of frozen water averaging 2-3 metres in thickness, although this varies greatly. The region is 98% ice, 2% barren rock.
68% OF OUR FRESHWATER IS IN ICE SHEETS
One tenth is in the Greenland Ice Sheet. This means 20% of the world’s freshwater is right here, inside an ice sheet covering a staggering 1.71 million sq km.
SUMMER TEMPERATURES
Arctic temperatures in summer range from around 3°-12°C (37°- 54°F). The weather can change rapidly, with sudden shifts in temperature, wind and visibility.

VENTURE INTO THE SVALBARD ARCHIPELAGO
Welcome to the High Arctic. A deserted, other-worldly archipelago full of rugged mountains, towering ice caps, immense glaciers and plunging fjords. Sailing 80 degrees north, depending on conditions, you may find yourself anywhere from 600 to 400 miles from the North Pole. The stillness creates a tranquillity unrivalled anywhere else. largest ice fjords creating ‘bergs that drift into the bay. The wildlife is diverse, and you may see whales, seals, Arctic foxes, wild reindeer, puffins and possibly even shaggy muskoxen. The surrounding waters provide rich habitats for many species, offering you once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to see these incredible creatures.
FOLLOW FAMED CANADIAN ARCTIC EXPLORERS
Follow in the footsteps of famous explorers to fantastical fjords, fierce wildlife and fractured lands in Canada’s far north. Sail the Northwest Passage to islands few have seen, witnessing wonders and hearing unearthly sounds. Our ice-class ships take you deeper into the beauty of these remote locations in unparalleled comfort, while our experts show you luminous icebergs, majestic barren landscapes, and perhaps even a polar bear or two roaming the land. Join us on a voyage of discovery you’ll be recounting for years to come.

CONNECT MORE CLOSELY WITH LOCAL CULTURE
Despite the remoteness of the Canadian Arctic it’s been inhabited for centuries. Adapted to this cold, challenging life, its people have developed a rich culture and storied history for you to uncover. We’ve gone deep into these communities to create meaningful partnerships where you and the inhabitants learn from each other, sharing experiences. Cultural views, ancient beliefs and timeless traditions are reflected in the wonderful art and more that awaits.

Two of our many experts in this region:
BERNARDO ALPS – Ornithologist and Marine Biologist
Bernardo is Adjunct Research Scientist at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro, Spain. He’s also a member of the West Coast Large Whale Entanglement Team which helps minimise the likelihood of large whales becoming entangled in fishing gear and promotes the conservation of healthy whale populations along the US West Coast. His formal education was in journalism before transitioning to the fields of seabird and marine mammal research. His love of exploring faraway places and the wonders of discovery and adventure finally led him to Silversea.
ANDREW WEBB – Wildlife Guide
Andy Webb is a Zoology graduate from the University of Durham who has worked as a seabird ecologist for the UK Government, where he spent years surveying the distribution patterns and abundance of bird species at sea in the north and west of Scotland. Andy now works for Silversea as one of our expert wildlife guides and ornithology lecturers, focusing on voyages to destinations across the South Atlantic and Antarctica, and also back in the familiar reaches of the remote highlands in northern Scotland and along its beautiful west coast.
Monacobreen Glacier, Svalbard
Adventure into Iceland and Svalbard
Discovery the fiery side of the Arctic
Sail to the land of fire and ice to explore its rugged shores, rich natural habitats and Arctic deserts, then onto the pristine wilderness of Svalbard. Iceland is steeped in mysticism. Here, you’ll discover a different side of the Arctic with surprises along the way. Soulful scenery abounds, unspoilt nature unfolds everywhere, there’s no light or air pollution and over half the population believes in elves.
But it’s not all about the great outdoors; Icelandic culture is rich and varied. Going back to before the arrival of Norsemen in 874 AD, it’s a land where Viking traditions still play a large part in everyday life. The Svalbard archipelago is just as alluring, known for its desolate landscapes and unique wildlife, including the polar bear. Remote and remarkable, both lands offer an unparalleled experience.
