WHY CHEMICAL ANCHORS? Chemical Anchors are one of those peculiar building products that are shrouded in mystery – unless you’ve used them and then the chances are that you will have been switched on to the tremendous fixing performance they offer.

Because Chemical Anchors ‘flow’ into the hole they allow for an infinite combination of diameters of fixing and setting depths and provide a far greater surface area which spreads the load more evenly and re-enforces the fixing area.

With modern building methods, steel frame structures and increasingly lightweight and hollow substrates being used, Chemical Anchors, also referred to as ‘Resin Bonded’ Anchors, have now come of age and are being increasingly used where a critical or heavy weight loading needs fastening.

Chemical Anchors are usually based on a 2 part product, combining a ‘resin’ and ‘hardener’ packed in the required ratio to provide rapid curing (usually 10 parts resin to 1 part hardener).

Unlike intrusive mechanical expansion anchors or plastic plugs, Chemical Anchors make the fixing an integral part of the substrate as the load is spread throughout the entire fixing area removing the stress caused within the substrate when mechanical anchors or plastic plugs are ‘tightened’ up. This key difference is particularly relevant on lightweight substrates, and poor and friable substrates, cracked concrete, sandstone and masonry as well for fixings close to the edge.

Traditional packaging uses a Co-Axial cartridge where the resin is packed in a cartridge with a central ‘inner’ cartridge that holds the hardener, application using a special Co-Axial gun is via a ‘mixer’ nozzle that blends the 2 parts together before they reach the end of the nozzle.

A newer, more convenient and easier to use packaging format now available on some Anchorset products is the ‘twin bag’ system, where the contents are contained in two separate polythene bags in a one piece cartridge that allows application using a standard sealant cartridge gun, and also provides a much easier ‘flow’.

HOW ARE THEY USED? The hole is drilled to a prescribed diameter dependent upon the diameter of the threaded bar to be used, and the loading it has to take. A full table of relevant hole diameter sizes and loading strengths is given on all packs and technical data, but for example for an M8 fixing a 10mm diameter hole would normally be used in concrete.

WHERE ARE THEY USED? In addition to the more critical structural applications Chemical Anchors also provide a more robust fixing solution in many day to day building applications such as: • Satellite Dishes • Fire Surrounds

• Railings • Lamps

• Heavy Pipes • Steel Structures

• Gates • Kitchen Wall Cupboards

• Sanitary Fixings • Towel Holders

• Wall Tiles

WHAT TYPES ARE THERE? There are several different types of Chemical Anchors, the most popular two are:

Polyester Resin

Polyester Styrene Free Resin

A general purpose economical resin based on Styrene, but due to its hazardous nature it is recommended only for use outdoors. For medium duty applications, it offers fast cure and high resistance to weathering, hardens in around 6 minutes, and takes a full load strength in only 30 minutes. Typically would achieve 10.6Kn pull out strength on an M12 threaded rod in solid concrete.

The safer option, Styrene Free Resin is the ideal choice for indoors or outdoors with a reduced odour in enclosed spaces, which is not harmful. The ideal choice for medium duty fixing in any substrate type, provides a chemical resistant finish. Typically would achieve 11.6 Kn pull out strength on an M12 threaded rod in solid concrete.
