Emerald Times - March 2023

Sisters,

I hope everyone's 2023 has started out being blessed. Mine sure has as my husband and I welcomed our second child on January 30th. Life sure has gotten a lot more interesting for us!

It’s hard to believe how quickly the last few months have passed. I feel like we were just in St. Paul for the National Conclave, but in just a short few months, we will be in Omaha for the 2023 National Convention. The National Sorority Board has been pulling together the program details and will update the website as it all comes together. If you’re an alumna and want to share your knowledge or expertise with fellow sisters, we are still looking for a few more workshop facilitators. This year’s theme is ‘Own Your Space’. We can’t wait to see you all in July!

Throughout February, collegiate members from across the country gather at one of four Leadership Seminars held in conjunction with AGR. We are so proud to have record numbers attending in our first fully in-person series since 2020.

Leadership Seminar participants cheered the achievements of our Spirit of Ruth recipients, who each received their awards at a seminar. Congratulations on a well-deserved honor. We had a record setting number of nominations this year and appreciate everyone who took a

moment to nominate a fellow sister. It was not an easy decision to select just four of them. If you know of a fellow sister who is deserving of this award, you can nominate them now for 2024 in the Greenhouse.

In addition to the chance to honor a fellow sister, there are several other opportunities for alumnae to stay connected and support the Sorority. So, if you have thought about giving back, now is a great time.

There are a variety of roles available this spring, some that only require you to commit a few hours of your time over a short period to more involved roles that require more time and a one to two-year commitment. Throughout the following pages, you will find the details about these roles and how to volunteer or apply—they include National Awards Program Judges; National Sorority Board Positions; Chapter Consultants; and 2024 Leadership Seminar Facilitators.

As always, feel free to reach out to me or anyone else on the National Sorority Board if you have any questions or concerns.

Sigma Alpha Chapter Consultants Applications due April 1

Chapter Consultants are the heartbeat of Sigma Alpha collegiate chapters, and support, mentor and guide chapter officers toward success. If you have a love for Sigma Alpha, a desire to give back to collegiate chapters, and a willingness to mentor collegiate chapters, this may be the role for you.

In this role, you’ll regularly communicate with your eight + assigned chapters and participate in monthly Chapter Leader Forums led by the Chapter Operations Director and Chapter Operations Manager. Additionally, you will travel to about four chapters in each year, which may require time away from work. There are 4 spots available for this 2-year commitment. Contact the Jennifer Webster at collegiate@sigmaalpha.org. for more information.

National Sorority Board Applications

Due April 15

Are you a Sigma Alpha alumna who would like to devote time, energy and expertise to helping Sigma Alpha excel? The alumnae who serve on our National Sorority Board provide immeasurable benefit to Sigma Alpha and help the sorority move forward in strategic and meaningful ways. Available positions include: Vice President, Collegiate Membership Director, Professional Development Director and Communications Director. These are 2-year terms.

The National Sorority Board governs the sorority in accordance with the National Bylaws, policies and procedures. They also provide guidance to collegiate and alumnae chapters, facilitate the bonds of sisterhood between members and serve as representatives of Sigma Alpha at sorority, industry and affiliated association events. Contact Kim Neumann at nationalpresident@sigmaalpha.org for more information.

The applications for both roles can be found in the Greenhouse.

We’re excited to announce that the Sigma Alpha family just got a little bit bigger! Sigma Alpha National President, Kim Neumann, and her husband, Brad, welcomed their second child and first son, Owen David Neumann, on January 30, 2023. Big sister, Emma, was excited to greet him upon his arrival home and is already a big help to mom and dad!

For the first time since 2020, the Sigma Alpha AGR Leadership Seminars returned to a fully in-person experience.

Nearly 275 Sigma Alpha sisters from across the country participated in one of four sessions held throughout the month of February. The theme for this year’s series was “Explore.”

The four alumni facilitators 2 from Sigma Alpha and 2 from Alpha Gamma Rho—guided participants through a two-day journey as they learned from the experiences of impactful explorers and how their expectations are like the lives we live.

Friday’s breakout sessions included everything from, “Trekking Through Social Confidence,” to “Own Your Path Everyday,” followed by “Exploring Your Brand,” and “Exploring Your Network.”

Collectively, these sessions laid the foundational elements for building personal success by navigating situations that push attendees out of their comfort zones, mastering time-management, identifying their personal brand, and broadening their professional networks.

The day capped off with a session titled “Exploring Your True Colors,” which took a look at their personalities and how they could truly represent their best authentic selves in social settings.

Saturday began with participants navigating conflict resolution in the “Exploring Conflict Resolution” session, and used the lessons learned the night before to integrate the role of personality types in resolving issues. The “Explore your Role on a Team” session showcased the ability of teamwork to make achieving goals more attainable.

Participants also learned the importance of utilizing innovation for personal and leadership growth in “The Innovation Journey,” and identified their planning strengths and weaknesses in “Exploration of Event Planning.”

Participants set goals for themselves and identified personal objectives.

Alpha Gamma Rho and Sigma Alpha honored alumni during the luncheon on Saturday. Sigma Alpha presented the Spirit of Ruth Award to a deserving alumna at each of the four sessions.

The weekend concluded with “Define Your Exploration & Start Your Journey,” an action planning session that helped participants to take what was learned over the weekend hat and use it establish a plan for success, for both themselves as individuals and their chapters as a whole.

Jessica (Rohrig) Kiesling is an alumna of the Iowa State University Delta Chapter and holds a Masters Degree in Agricultural Education. Her involvement in 4-H, FFA, and Speak Out For Agriculture developed her passion for creating educational experiences in agriculture and her decision to study agricultural education.

She credits Sigma Alpha for helping transform her from passionate to professional and for opening her eyes to new ways to develop.

Since 2015, she has worked in Michigan State University’s Animal Science Department serving as the Advising Coordinator and teaching two professional development courses. When her husband, Dan Kiesling, passed away in 2016, she chose to honor his legacy and commitment to animal science and livestock judging by establishing an endowment in his name.

For Jessica, relationships with students that span the test of time are the true measure of her success. She is most proud of the fact that she remains in touch with students while building new bonds today. In 2020, Jessica married Nigel O'Connor. In addition to her support of Sigma Alpha, Kelly volunteers in her community and local schools. For nearly 20 years, she has owned and operated the KAL Group, which manages campaign finances for candidates running for local, regional, state and federal office. Kelly and her husband, Casey, reside with their children Audra, Ethan and Johanna on her family’s dairy farm in Hilmar, CA.
