Sigma Alpha Sorority - Emerald Times - May 2022

Page 1

As my first term as President comes to a close, I can’t help but reflect on the past two years. I knew this position wasn’t going to be easy, and it would challenge me as a leader. However, navigating the obstacles of COVID created additional challenges for all of us. The National Leadership Team had to identify new ways to operate and deliver Sorority services and benefits - some of which will remain in place while others will be tabled in favor of a return to normal. As the team has navigated the strategic planning process, we’ve constantly challenged our thoughts and ideas as we identify the Sorority’s path forward. We are excited to present our plan to the membership this summer. Looking back even further, I am both grateful and proud to have had the chance to serve Sigma Alpha in multiple roles over the last 10 years. This gave me the privilege of giving back to the organization that allowed, and continues to allow, me to grow as a leader in both my career and my community. In addition to these volunteer roles, I also serve the Sorority through monetary donations to the Sigma Alpha Foundation. Each year through my job as a loan officer, I am fortunate to have the opportunity to earn a performance bonus. Because of this, I made a commitment a few years back to annually donate at least 10% of that bonus to the Sigma Alpha Foundation. I do this because the Foundation plays a critical role in the Sorority’s ability to grow its programming and directly impact the Sigma Alpha experience for both collegiate and alumnae members. Without the support of the Foundation, it is challenging for the National Sorority to provide top notch programming.

I am not alone in my service, though. Many sisters have volunteered their time to serve the Sorority. I want to express my sincere thanks to all who have volunteered this past year. No matter how big or small the role may be, each one is critical to the success of the Sorority. Whether you served on a national committee like the National Sorority Board Nominating Committee, the Chapter Consultant Selection Committee or the new Hearing Panel; judged awards for the National Awards Program; served as the Coordinator or a Facilitator for Leadership Seminars; helped produce Emerald Times as a writer, editor or contributor; or served in one of the longer term roles of chapter advisor, National Chapter Consultant or a member of the National Sorority Board or National Foundation Board – thank you! As we look toward summer, I am excited to host National Conclave attendees in my home state of Minnesota in July. The National Sorority Board is working diligently to create a productive day for the members in attendance. Delegates will have the chance to tour a local Bayer production facility, provide input during committee meetings, network with sisters from across the country, participate in the National Service Project, and most importantly serve as the voice of their chapter during the Annual National Chapter Congress. I hope you all have an enjoyable summer, and, as always, reach out to me or anyone else on the National Sorority Board if you have any questions or concerns. In Sisterhood,

When we think about pageants, the field of agriculture may not be our first thought. But, there are many different royal roles that serve and promote agriculture. Meet wo young women from Sigma Alpha who use their royal role to share agriculture in their communities and beyond.

Pia Martinez is a member of the Alpha Phi Chapter at California State University, Fresno. Pia Martinez grew up in a “zero-stoplight town” with a population of around 7,500 people located in the Central Valley of California— Woodlake, California. The Central Valley produces a quarter of the world’s food, and agriculture is in Pia’s blood. As a young adult, her father was involved in California agriculture as a migrant farm worker. Pia’s mother grew up raising livestock and participating in 4-H and FFA. Pia pursued the passions her parents instilled in her by enrolling at California State University, Fresno to major in Agricultural Communications.

questions about current events in agriculture. Pia thanks Sigma Alpha for helping her to prepare for her time as Southern California Miss United States Agriculture. “Sigma Alpha gave me the opportunity to grow alongside and learn from my sorority sisters,” says Pia. “I rely on my sisters to share their knowledge in areas of agriculture where I have less experience. I feel supported and privileged to know that my Sigma Alpha sisters are in my corner cheering me on every step of the way.” Pia chose to join Sigma Alpha for the same reason many sisters do: to be part of something bigger than herself. She has felt at home in the

Pia knows both the joys and the discomforts of agricultural life. She says she has experienced that such a career can be emotionally and physically draining. At the same time, Pia feels that agriculture is one of the most rewarding careers because you directly contribute to feeding the world. Pia seeks to use her degree to bridge the gap between agriculture and the people of the of the world. Pia likens her role as Southern California Miss United States Agriculture to a choose-your-ownadventure book. She tours many parts of the agriculture industry, attends events, speaks at schools, meets with 4-H clubs and FFA chapters and “agvocates” on social media. Pia loves using all of these platforms to share her experiences. The role is an opportunity for her to meet new people, often relying on the crown she wears to serve as an icebreaker. Pia knows she is truly making a difference when people share their own agricultural experience with her or reach out to ask

Alpha Phi Chapter knowing that her fellow sisters share her passion for agriculture. Through Sigma Alpha, Pia found a group of like-minded women who encourage her to be her best self. Now meet Morgan Askins, Miss Rodeo Kentucky. Morgan is an alumna of the Beta Sigma chapter at Western Kentucky University.

Morgan grew up on a small farm in Rockfield, Kentucky. She began her involvement in agriculture as a 4-H and FFA member. She is an equestrian at heart, favoring Quarter Horses and Rocky Mountain Horses, and showing at ARHA, NRHA and AQHA sanctioned competitions. The Miss Rodeo Kentucky competition takes place in Louisville, Kentucky, during the North American International Livestock Exposition. The pageant lasts three days and requires participants to compete in the categories of horsemanship, personality, appearance, personality and speech, and includes a written test. One young woman is selected to represent the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), agriculture, and the western way of life. Morgan does this by traveling the Bluegrass State appearing at agriculture, equine and rodeo events; presenting

Morgan Askins the American flag and interacting with rodeo fans. Morgan values the relationships she has built with professionals in agriculture through her role. Miss Rodeo Kentucky has given her the opportunity to meet fellow “sash sisters,” livestock contractors, rodeo fans and sponsors. Morgan says that rodeo is truly a family event. “I will never grow tired of the friendships I have made and the ability to lend and receive a helping hand from everyone involved,” explains Morgan. She leans on the networks of helping hands she has developed as she prepares to compete at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in December for the title of Miss Rodeo America 2023. Morgan is thankful for her time as a Sigma Alpha sister and looks forward to meeting sisters from other chapters that she is sure to find at almost every event she attends. “All of us are women in agriculture who took advantage of opportunities that lead to success,” she says. Pia Martinez and Morgan Askins exemplify what Sigma Alpha is all about: achieving excellence in agriculture, sharing knowledge, and developing relationships along the way. Page 5

Many Sigma Alpha sisters are business owners and entrepreneurs. Some have created their own businesses while others have taken over family operations. Three different sisters—all owners of very different businesses—took some time to share their advice with other sisters wanting to start a business and connected the dots with how Sigma Alpha has helped them in their ventures.

Jess Campbell, an alumna from the Alpha Chapter at The Ohio State University, met Kate Link, an alumna of the Gamma Chapter at Michigan State University, while she was still an undergraduate student. The two hit it off, with Campbell saying Link’s authenticity made her look up to her and want to learn from her. They continued their friendship when Campbell graduated and become a regional consultant and Link moved from regional consultant to the Vice President on the National Sorority Board. As part of Link’s national board role, she oversaw the training for the consultants, and kept in contact over the years.

Campbell is the owner of Carroll Creek Farms LLC, which raises livestock to fill gaps in the local market. Link founded Farmwife Financials LLC after leaving her job with GreenStone Farm Credit when she found her skills were being sought out by former customers and farmers in her area. The two had a chance to meet up when Campbell was passing through Link’s town, and Campbell showed Link the trouble she was having managing her accounting. When Link was able to help her, they recognized that the trust they had already established easily transitioned them into this new facet of their relationship. Campbell and Link own separate businesses that work together, showing the importance of both professional and personal networks. What began as a friendship has grown beyond into a successful business relationship. Campbell says that in growing a business, you will fail, but you can look at those failures as lessons. It takes time to be successful, and a bit of faith to stay the course, even when it gets hard.

Megan Dresbach, an alumna from the Alpha Chapter, started her business, MD Ag Services LLC, when she was in high school. To help pay for college, she purchased a semi-truck. This truck was leased to her father’s manure application company, W.D. Farms LLC, to help transport products throughout the state. Dresbach maintained her business through college, evening using it to earn her American Degree, and now owns a fleet of four semi-trucks and four tanker trailers that travel across Indiana and Ohio. She is also the Vice President of W.D. Farms LLC, and is in the process of taking over ownership of the company with one of her two brothers. Dresbach says Sigma Alpha has provided her with networking opportunities that have allowed her business to thrive. She shared an incident when one of her trucks broke down; the dealership wasn’t able to fix it for her; and, she needed it operational immediately. She contacted her Sigma Alpha Little Sister, who was able to connect her with a mechanic to get her truck fixed. She also says it’s great to have a network of people to call to find somewhere to eat or to help out in a pinch during their busy season.

Megan Dresbach

She says owning MD Ag Services LLC has been both the most rewarding and most stressful thing she has ever done. The best advice she can give to a sister interested in starting their own business is that success doesn’t happen overnight, echoing Campbell. Campbell, Dresbach, and Link all speak about the importance of your network while running a business and how important it is to lean on those connections when you can. Sigma Alpha helped them build those connections that have proven significant in different ways for their businesses today.

Social media keeps us connected with so much in our lives. We use it for group projects, for upcoming events, to stay in touch with family that lives afar or friends from our childhood. And, one alumna chapter is using it maintain communications, excitement and involvement with their alumnae members. The alumnae chapter at West Virginia University has used tools like Facebook and Instagram to stay in touch, celebrate the wins in each other’s lives and care for one another in times of great sorrow. “We use our Instagram to follow our sisters’ lives post-graduation. If someone gets a great new job, gets engaged, gets married, buys a house, has a baby, or any other big life changes, we give them a little shout out and let them know we see them and we

Page 8

are proud of them,” explained Sydney White, the president of the West Virginia University alumnae chapter. “We also see when sisters have hardships, like a death in their family, or an accident or injury. When we see news like this, we send out a card with flowers or some other type of "thinking of you" gift, just to let our sisters know that they are in our thoughts, and we want to be there to help in any way possible. The chapter also uses a Facebook group to keep sisters updated on what’s happening within the alumnae and collegiate chapters. Today, they have 35 dues paying chapter members and a total of 213 members in their Facebook group. To facilitate transition to the alumnae chapter, Sydney works closely with the collegiate chapter to connect with graduating seniors.

Instagram has kept the West Virginia University Alumnae Chapter connected, and provided a platform to celebrate and cheer for each other.

“At the end of each semester I talk with the current president and get a list of all graduating seniors,” explains Sydney. I, then, reach out to them by email or Facebook to collect their contact information and to invite them to join our Facebook group. This has worked really well and has helped us to connect colleigate sisters with alumnae members in their professional field of interest.” Sydney says maintaining communication with the collegiate chapter is critical because it provides opportunities for alumnae members to get involved and allows for continuous interactions and a smooth transition from collegiate to alumnae membership. When asked what advice she would have for other alumnae chapters Sydney encourages chapters to remain persistent and consistent. “I know it can sometimes be discouraging to keep an alumnae chapter active,” she empathizes. Everyone is so busy with their daily lives, and they might not have time for

Sigma Alpha. Find a small group that has the time and is committed to seeing improvement in engagement. This will take time! Just keep reaching out, keep giving updates, and over time more and more sisters will get involved. When we “reactivated” our alumnae chapter 4 years ago, there were two alumnae that came to our first event. This year we had 22 come to formal!”

Beginning with this issue of Emerald Times, we’re starting a new tradition...a cooking contest! Each issue will feature recipes submitted by sisters that highlight ingredients we’re celebrating. Over the next few months, our country will celebrate National Egg Month, Dairy Month, Beef Month and Fruit/Vegetable Month. Here are the recipes that star those ingredients!

3. While filling is cooling, let dough thaw for 15 minutes. Cut olives in half and boiled eggs into quarters. Prepare one egg mixed with 2 tsp water for egg wash. 4. Roll out dough and cut out 4 inch circles. Fill with 3 tbs of filling, two olive halves, and one piece of egg. Brush edges with egg wash and fold over in half. Crimp with fork or pinch edge to seal. 5. Freeze empanadas for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Bake until crispy around the edges and golden brown, about 25-30 minutes.

Ingredients 1 tbs olive oil 1 pound ground beef, 20% fat 1 onion, chopped 1 red bell pepper, chopped Salt Ground pepper 1 1/2 tbs ground cumin 1 tbs paprika 1/2 tbs oregano, dried 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper 1/3 cup beef broth 1/3 cup milk 1 tsp sugar 1/4 cup raisins 1/4 cup pitted olives 3 eggs, boiled 2 packages puff pasty or pie dough 1. Heat oil in a skillet over high heat. Add ground beef and cook thoroughly, breaking up chunks with a spoon. Remove beef from pan while leaving fat in the pan. 2. Add onions and bell peppers to the skillet and cook over medium heat. Once tender add cumin, paprika, oregano, and cayenne. Cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Then add beef broth, milk, and raisins and turn heat down to low. Let simmer until most liquid has evaporated. Add salt and black pepper to taste. Remove from heat and allow to cool.

together to seal in the cheese mixture.

For the burger: 2 pounds ground beef (95 percent lean) 1 egg 2 tablespoons brown sugar 2 tablespoons honey ¼ teaspoon chipotle pepper powder 1 teaspoon dry mustard 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 cup blueberries, lightly mashed 3 ounces cream cheese, softened 2.5 ounces crumbled blue cheese ¼ teaspoon onion powder 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley Salt and pepper to taste Thick-cut sourdough bread Butter For the Blueberry Barbecue Sauce: 2 teaspoons vegetable oil ¼ cup minced onion ½ teaspoon chipotle pepper powder ¼ cup ketchup ¼ cup white balsamic raspberry blush vinegar 1½ tablespoons light brown sugar 1½ tablespoons honey 1½ tablespoons Dijon mustard ½ teaspoon garlic powder 2 cups blueberries; fresh preferred Salt and pepper to taste For the caramelized onions: 4 large Vidalia onions, sliced 4 teaspoons olive oil Salt, to taste 1 teaspoon white sugar Blueberry beer (such as Wild Blue from Anheuser -Busch), optional

4. Grill burgers over medium-high heat 5 to 6 minutes on each side or until internal temperature reaches 160 degrees. 5. As burger is resting, lightly toast bread over low heat. Top with Blueberry Barbecue Sauce and caramelized onions (see recipes). 6. To make the blueberry barbecue sauce: Heat the oil and saute onion until tender, about 3 minutes. Add remaining ingredients, except the blueberries, and bring to a simmer, stirring frequently. Add the blueberries and continue simmering, stirring until thickened, 10 to 15 minutes. Puree the sauce in a blender or food processor until smooth. Pass through a strainer (optional) and season with salt and pepper. Serve at room temperature. 7. To make the onions: Heat olive oil in a sauté pan; add onions, stirring to coat. Spread onions evenly in pan and let cook, stirring occasionally. After 10 minutes, sprinkle with salt and sugar. Let cook for 30 to 60 minutes, stirring occasionally. Do not stir too often, or onions will not brown. If after 30 minutes onions are burning, lower heat and add a bit more oil. Continue to cook and scrape, cook and scrape, until the onions are a rich, browned color. At the end of the cooking process you might want to add a little blueberry beer to help deglaze the pan and bring some additional flavor to the onions. You can store them refrigerated for several days in an airtight container.

1. To make the burgers: Mix ground beef with egg, sugar, honey, chipotle pepper powder, dry mustard, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Stir in mashed blueberries. Divide into 12 thin patties. 2. In small bowl, mix together cream cheese and blue cheese. Stir in onion powder and parsley; season with salt and pepper as necessary. 3. Top half the patties with a tablespoon of cheese mixture; spread evenly across patty, leaving a small border free of the mixture. Place remaining patties on top and press edges
