Paper With A Hometown Flavor”

What are yellow and red dots on new tires?

The yellow and red marks on the tires are there to help with installation. The yellow dot marks the lightest part of the tire, while the red dot marks the highest point. When used correctly, these guides can help lower the overall cost of your tire balancing. Typically, they are only temporary and wear off with time.

The yellow dot provides a guide for aligning the wheel. When a mechanic goes to align your wheel, they will line up the dot with certain parts of the tire.

Specifically, the yellow dot lines up with the section of the tire with the least weight. Usually, this dot needs to line up to where the valve stem is, as this is the heaviest point of the wheel.

By lining up the lightest point with the heaviest, you help balance out the weight differences.

When done correctly, this method can lower the cost of balancing your tires. After all, the dots help ensure that the smallest amount of weight necessary is used, which lowers your overall cost.

What does the red dot on a tire mean? Though manufacturers try to make a perfect tire, no tire is perfectly round. When the belts are joined together, they develop high and low points. While companies may attempt to make these differences as small as possible, they will always exist.

Due to the variation in size, the tire may vibrate when roll- ing. Obviously, this doesn’t create a very smooth ride, and it can cause excessive wear on the tire.

The red dot marks a tire’s high point. In many cases, wheels will have another dot to indicate the low point as well. In these cases, drilled dots are quite common. However, stickers can be used as well.

When attaching the tire, these two dots should be aligned. By doing this, you minimize the vibration created by the wheel. In the long run, this can make your tire last longer.

Kids - and cars - heat up fast

“Many people think it has to be 105 degrees outside for a child to die in a car,” It doesn’t have to be that extreme. It can be 80 degrees outside, but could be 105 to 120 degrees inside the car.

Babies and young children are most at risk due to the following reasons: A child’s body heats up three to five times faster than an adult’s. In just 10 minutes, the inside of a car can heat up 20 degrees. In a hot car, a child’s organs can start shutting down when his or her temperature reaches 104 F. At 107 F, the child can die.

Look before you lock! When you leave your car, ALWAYS open the back door and check the back seat before you lock your doors and walk away. DO THIS EVERY SINGLE TIME - even if you’re 100% certain your child is not with you. Make it a habit to check.

Tell anyone who will be driving your child to also look before they lock. “It’s really important,” “Just take a few seconds and do that double-check.” (Children’s Hospital, Los Angeles)

3 Moles

There are three moles at the bottom of their mole hole. The first mole—daddy mole—wakes up, climbs to the top, sticks his nose out, and says, “Mmmmm... I smell bacon!” Mommy mole wakes up. She climbs to the top, sticks her nose out, and says, “Mmmmm... I smell pancakes!” Baby mole wakes up. He climbs up but gets stuck behind his mom and dad. He takes a big whiff and says, “All I can smell is molasses!”

Pearls of Wisdom from old people

Spend time with your parents. They will not always be there for you. Hate less and try to forgive more. You will be much happier this way. Don’t postpone your dreams. If you don’t have five minutes in a day for yourself, then you are not living. Don’t spend money that you don’t have. Find a passion, something that you love to do. It will keep your life fulfilled even when you are alone. Life is not fair, but it is still good. Don’t compare your life to other people’s lives. Your happiness and wellbeing are independent of anything else. Spend time with your children. They grow fast, really fast.

It’s never too late to live your childhood. Live your age. Don’t rush it. Don’t waste time. It runs out fast, really fast. The ability to forget can be bliss. Time heals in ways you can’t imagine. You don’t have to win every argument. Sometimes it is best to concede. Save for your retirement before it is too late. If a disaster hits you, ask yourself the following question: “Will this matter in five years?”. The answer is almost always “No”.

Don’t be afraid to apologize and say sorry. Make friends. They will be there for you when your loved ones are not around. Work less. There is not enough time in the world to finish everything that you wanted to do or accomplish all the things that you wanted to achieve. Take risks. Nothing feels worse than regret from wasted opportunities. Express your feelings more often. Tell the people that you love how much you love them. Money alone will not make you happier, it only make things a bit easier. Never go to bed angry.

You may not always get what you want and that is just fine. No matter how desperate or sad you are, you will recover. Take your time with love. Don’t rush into it. Compatibility and respect are more important than love. Travel more while you can. You will not be able to do it when you are older. Prevention is much cheaper than medication. Take good care of your body and your health.

Be careful before you speak because you can’t take back your words. People forgive but they don’t forget. It is up to you to be happy. The joy of life is within the details. Enjoy the little things: your cup of coffee, your morning walks, etc. Live with a cat. It is the weirdest, funniest, and best companion that you can have. Work is essential for your life. Don’t feel bad because you have to go to work every day. Even billionaires do it. You have to like what you do. If you find a job you love, you will never have to work a day in your life. Take fewer pictures and live the moment. You will never see half the pictures that you captured.

Occidental Hotel, Bodie

By Terri Geissinger - Author & Bodie Historian

The Occidental Hotel, located on Main Street, was one of the finest establishments in Bodie. Although there were several owners and business managers through time, Anne Currie Miller is most often remembered as the one who ran it the best. Her reputation as an excellent cook had long been established before she operated the large restaurant with several employees. Open seven days a week and serving meals from 5am to 10pm; they say the place was always busy.

Each table was set with white linen cloths, fine tableware, etched drinking glasses and a bowl of fresh fruit, depending on the season. Breakfast was hearty and wholesome and most often served ‘family style’. Strong black coffee was served all day long. Large platters, heaped with juicy steaks, bacon or pork chops would take the center of the table. Steaming side-dishes of fried potatoes, stacks of hot cakes, baked cinnamon apples and of course, a warm loaf of bread. Hot syrup, fresh butter and an assortment of jellies and jams filled colorful cut-glass dishes. Eggs were served either boiled, fried or scrambled. Add ten cents for fresh squeezed orange juice during summer months. An average cost for breakfast as described was one dollar. Lunch and dinner, depending on options, would cost anywhere from $1.50 to $2.75 and a really fancy meal could cost up to $4 a plate. Add five cents for a tall glass of cold milk. And by the way, to offer milk and OJ on the menu was a statement of a high-class establishment. Alcohol was served at nearly every restaurant for good reason.

Back in the day, the menu represented the season and a whole lot of work. Beef, pork and lamb were raised in the valleys surrounding Bodie and arrived ‘on the hoof’. There were slaughter houses at the north end of town where the cattle drives would end. Big ranching outfits located in Bridgeport, Smith Valley and Yerington supplied food for both Bodie and Aurora. Where ‘Milk Ranch’ is today, also known as the picnic ground, a dairy was operated and supplied fresh milk to patrons. Fresh trout was served in season and cost $1.25 per dozen. Fishermen would enter an exclusive contract with a and sell their daily catch. Women who could bake exquisite cookies, pies, cakes and make candy at home would make extra money by entering sole agreements with eateries. Due to the altitude and extreme weather conditions, gardening was nearly impossible in Bodie. Farms in the Mono Basin, Owens Valley and valleys to the north provided a wide variety of vegetables. Fruit came from the Central Valley via Sonora Pass and from Bishop. Fruit was considered a delicacy and was deeply appreciated.

The nourishment of Bodie was a full-time job for many. Anne Miller worked her hands to the bone and is fondly remembered, even after all these years. That says something in itself. This we know for sure; Nothing was easy. And Nothing came free. ©

Take only one

The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large tray of hot dogs. The nun posted a sign on the hot dog tray “Take only one, God is watching”.

Further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. One child whispered to another, “Take all you want. God is watching the hot dogs.”

If you don’t mind....

A man doing market research knocked on a door and was greeted by a young woman with three small children running around at her feet.

He said, “I’m doing some research for Vaseline. Have you ever used the product? She said, “Yes. My husband and I use it all the time.” “And if you don’t mind my asking, what do you use it for?” “We use it for romance.”

The researcher was a little taken aback. He said, “Usually people lie to me and say that they use it on a child’s bicycle chain or to help with a gate hinge. But, in fact, I know people do use it for romance. I admire you for your honesty. Since you’ve been frank so far, can you tell me exactly how you use it for romance?” The woman said, “I don’t mind telling you at all. My husband and I put it on the door knob and it keeps the kids out.”

Too much to drink

A man is having a few drinks at a bar when he looks over and notices a drunk guy passed out at a table nearby. The bartender tells him the drunk is Mr. Murphy and asks the man if he could drive Mr. Murphy home. Being a good Samaritan, the man agrees. The bartender writes down the address and gives it to him.

The man walks over and tries to wake Mr. Murphy but Mr. Murphy is groggy and quite drunk. The man helps Mr. Murphy to his feet and Mr. Murphy falls to the floor in a heap. “Jeez,” the man says wondering how anyone could drink so much. He takes Murphy by the arm and practically drags him out to the car. Once there he leans him against the side of his car while he looks for his keys. Mr. Murphy slides down to the ground. The man finds his keys and manages to get Murphy positioned in the car. He then drives to the address the bartender gave him.

He opens the passenger door and helps Mr. Murphy out and the guy falls to the ground. Cursing softly, now, the man helps him to his feet and practically drags him to the front door. He lets go of Mr. Murphy to knock on the door and the guy falls down again. He helps him to his feet as Mrs. Murphy answers the door.

“Hi, Mrs. Murphy, Your husband had too much to drink tonight so I gave him a ride home.” “That was nice of you,” she says, looking around...... “But where’s his wheelchair?”

Time Capsules, just for kids

A special way to celebrate a birthday or the beginning of your child’s school year is with a time capsule. It’s the perfect opportunity to capture memories that you’ll cherish forever. Not only is a time capsule great to remember the past, it’s a fun project for kids! Help them store their memories for years to come by following our guide below.

A time capsule is a container that holds present day items, such as photos, newspapers (if you still receive those), letters and more. It’s typically hidden away for your future self or someone of your choosing to open. This is perfect as a gift to yourself or a gift for your child for future years. Have another family member hide the box, so you aren’t tempted to open it! Want to hide it for a year? Five? Ten? There’s no time limit! The rules are all up to you. Shoeboxes are great for indoor safekeeping, while weather-resistant boxes are best for the outdoors.

Choose Your Container - In order to make your time capsule, first you’ll have to choose a container in which to store it. Choosing your container depends on how long you are planning on keeping it hidden. This is a great opportunity for your child to get involved. Have them pick out the box or help them decorate the box before it’s filled.

Determine Where You’ll Store It - For indoor storage, a shoe box, wooden box, large plastic storage container or even a mason jar will work. If you want to DIY something from the kitchen, consider using a cookie tin or egg carton for your time capsule. You might want to gather all of your time capsule items together first to determine the amount of storage space you’ll need. You can hide your box in a storage closet behind other items. An attic, basement or garage are also great locations. You want to hide your time capsule somewhere where others will not find it!

For outdoor safekeeping, consider a weatherproof, non-biodegradable container such as an old metal coffee can, popcorn can or a box made of stainless steel. Make sure this is secured before hiding or storing your box outside. Bury your time capsule in a garden under dirt where little to no rain hits, or in an outdoor garage. You could also ask a friend or family member to hold on to the container, just don’t tell your child who has it! (https://www.personalcreations.com)
