don’t know if it’s age, increased awareness or something else, but I am feeling thankful for things I used to take for granted. Though I’ve always known that tomorrow is never promised, I’m feeling a heightened awareness of that fact. It seems that every month, another friend or acquaintance has been stricken with, or lost a loved one to a cancer that struck out of the blue. I still feel shaken by the death of a colleague, younger than me and seemingly in good shape, who recently had a heart attack and died. I acknowledge that it is a blessing that my family and I woke up in sound mind and body this morning. Being part of a community that remains vibrant and that continues to grow is something for which I am also thankful. Despite prognostications of economic doom and gloom, at least in Sienna Plantation, new businesses continue to open and prosper. Recently, veterinarian, Dr. Brian Smith, broke ground for a state-of-the-art animal hospital on the corner of Sienna Ranch Road and Sienna Circle. Care Today, a primary and urgent care medical clinic, opened practice in the building formerly used by the residential association. Having another option for quality health care within a few minutes of home is a reason, I think, to be grateful. I am also thankful that on November 10th, a world renowned expert on how parents can help children reach their fullest potential, Leonard Sax, MD, PhD, is coming to the Stafford Centre to share insights with us. Join fellow food enthusiasts at the Culinary Book Club meeting at the Sienna Branch library on November 21st. The holiday dishes that your family might feel are need-to-be-replaced tired traditions could be new taste sensations to someone else’s family. The Culinary Book Club meeting is a place for foodies to share all things food, so stop by. All are welcome. And last but certainly not least, in this season of thanksgiving, thank you for your continued support of Sienna Plantation News. Happy Thanksgiving, Denise Denise R. Williams, Publisher

What is asset allocation?

MARSHALL YOUR MONEY

L

By James Marshall

ewis Carroll, the author of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, once said, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there. This is certainly true when it comes to investing. If you don’t know where you are headed financially, then the investments that make up your portfolio aren’t that important. If you do have a monetary destination in mind, asset allocation becomes vital. Asset allocation simply means not putting all your eggs in one basket. It is a systematic approach to diversification that may help determine the most efficient mix of assets based on your risk tolerance and time horizon. Asset allocation seeks to manage investment risk by diversifying a portfolio among the major asset classes, such as stocks, bonds, and cash alternatives. Each asset class has a different level of risk and potential return. At any given time, while one asset category may be increasing in value, another may be decreasing. Diversification is a method to help manage investment risk. Of course, asset allocation and diversification don’t guarantee against loss, but it may help cushion the blow. Dividing your investment in this way could help you ride out market fluctuations and protect your portfolio from a major loss in any single asset class. It is important to understand the risk versus the return tradeoff. Generally, the greater the potential return of an investment, the greater the risk. As a result, the makeup of a portfolio should be based on your risk tolerance. For the most part, you should not place all your assets in categories that have the highest potential for gain if you are concerned about the prospect of loss. It is essential to find a balance of asset classes that offer the highest potential return for your risk profile.

Other factors that are important in developing an asset allocation strategy are your investment goals and time horizon. When you are considering how to diversify your portfolio, ask yourself what

you want to accomplish with your investments. Are you planning to buy a new car or house in the near term? Do you aspire to pay for your children’s college education? Continued on page 11

We just found out we’re having a son. My sister-in-law says I should stop drinking bottled water because it has a negative effect on boys. She couldn’t explain why. Do you know what she’s talking about? I have suggested that if a woman drinks water or soda from a clear plastic bottle while she’s pregnant, the baby boy growing in her womb may be adversely affected. Over 6 months ago my daughter was released by her doctor to resume all physical activity after a stress fracture in her lower leg. If she runs or engages in strenuous physical activity, she says her leg still hurts. Is this normal? The key to treating stress fractures is not only to treat the fracture but also to determine the underlying cause that makes the patient susceptible to developing the stress fracture. When I have a patient that has a stress fracture I typically like to obtain a metabolic panel to evaluate vitamin D, calcium, and parathyroid levels. Having a defi-

colleagues at the University of Missouri, the University of Iowa, and at UCLA tested my hypothesis. They found that mothers with high levels of phthalates (the chemicals found in plastic bottles) in their system were ten times more likely to give birth to boys whose genitals showed subtle anomalies. I’ll discuss this issue in more detail at the Boys Adrift Seminar on November 10th. You can also read more in my book: Boys Adrift: the five factors driving the growing epidemic of unmotivated boys and underachieving young men. Answer provided by Leonard Sax, MD, PhD. Continued from page 8

ciency in any one of these can disrupt the bone’s ability to maintain itself and heal when undergoing excessive stress. If any of these levels are low then they need to be corrected especially if the patient is an avid runner or athlete. In addition, I also like to evaluate the patient’s anatomy beginning with their stance and their feet. If a patient has flat feet, high arched feet, or inappropriate shoes they can easily overload certain areas in the foot and leg which can lead to stress fractures and recurring pain. To check this, one can look at the bottom of their running shoes and see what part of the tread is worn down. If one side of the sole is worn down more than the other then there is an imbalance in the stresses across the foot and oftentimes orthotics are necessary. If a patient is still having pain six months later it seems that the initial problem that caused the stress fracture has not been corrected and probably needs to be revisited to avoid future problems. Answer provided by Dr. J. Michael Bennett. (281) 633-0320

What is asset allocation? Continued from page 5

When retirement rolls around, would you like to travel and buy a vacation home? The factors that are important to you should be taken into consideration when outlining an asset allocation strategy. If you require a specific amount of money at a point in the near future, you might want to consider a strategy with less risk. On the other hand, if you are saving for retirement and have several years until you need the funds, you might be able to invest for greater growth potential, even though this involves greater risk. Whichever asset allocation scenario you decide upon, there is no single strategy that fits every type of investor. Your specific situation calls for a specific approach with which you are comfortable and one that helps you pursue your investment goals. If you would like to discuss asset allocation and diversification strategies in detail, please contact my office to schedule a complimentary consultation. So, get invested, stay invested and diversify. ■ Marshall Wealth Management, LLC 101 Southwestern Blvd, Suite 136 • Sugar Land, Texas 77459 • (281) 903-7311 • www.marshallyourmoney.com

Boost holiday sales with email communication

By Amy Oliveri, Constant Contact Regional Director, Houston

This holiday season offer your customers more than discounts. Create email communications that are unique, helpful and inspiring. The more your emails stand out — the more impact they will have and the more likely they will be passed along to others. Whether you’re a B2B, B2C, or nonprofit organization, you can get ahead of the game with some smart planning. Here are a few tips:

1. Send a newsletter with this year’s accomplishments and next year’s goals. 2. Send a short story about how your donors’ funding makes a difference. 3. Give gift idea suggestions context and purpose. One week you could feature gifts for teachers, another week could be gifts for moms or dads, then gifts for coworkers, and so on.

If you plan your holiday email marketing campaign now, in the midst of the busy holiday season, you will have more time to focus on customer care.
