New name, new Alumni Weekend dates, new events:

Things are Happening at Siena! It s official: University status is coming soon to a campus near and dear to you! President Artman tells you all about it in his column (page 3), so we ll just tell you to mark your calendar. As of July 1, 1998, your alma mater changes its name to Siena Heights University. Keep those calendars out and take note of the new dates for Alumni Weekend. We ve moved the weekend about six weeks earlier -- September 18-20 -- and hope to take advantage of better weather while inviting students and parents to join in the celebration. If you graduated in a year ending in 3 or 8 -- or have friends who did -- plan now to enjoy a September reunion in Adrian. Theatre alumni from around 1975-80 are working on a special Alumni Weekend performance, coordinated by Marcus Cole 81 in Oakland, Cal., and Richard

Pahl 76 in the Chicago area. An exhibition of alumni art is planned at Flatlanders Gallery in Blissfield. And there will be lots more in the works. Alumni and friends of Siena Heights enjoyed several special events in recent months. A small Siena group met for a lakeside dinner near Battle Creek last August, prior to attending a production of The Who s Tommy at the Barn Theatre in Augusta, with Eric Parker 92 as a featured actor. In November, friends in the Chicago area gathered for an Alumni After-Hours Reception at the Oak Brook Hyatt Regency. Got an idea for an interesting Siena Heights gathering in your area? We want to hear from you! Contact any member of the Alumni Board or call Siena s Office of Communications & Constituent Relations, (517) 264-7143.

COMING SOON: Siena Heights University! For the Siena Heights community, the old college try will soon become the new university effort! Siena Heights College will be renamed Siena Heights University effective July 1, 1998, by vote of our Board of Trustees last fall. This is a significant decision for Siena and one which offers us exciting new opportunities, but be assured -- our commitment to dedicated teaching and personal attention will not change. We are making this change because the university name more accurately reflects the kind of institution Siena Heights is today. Colleges and universities are classified by the Carnegie Foundation and other organizations according to such factors as mission, size, degrees awarded, and academic programs offered. Siena Heights is a much more complex institution than most traditional liberal arts colleges. Our new name will more fully reflect that reality. As most of you well know, Siena was founded as a women s college in 1919 and has been co-educational since the late 1960s. Today s Siena Heights students are a diverse community of more than 2,000 traditional-age and working adult men and women. We operate seven degree-completion centers across the state and a Lansing-based theological studies program, in addition to our residential campus in Adrian. We award associate s and bachelor s degrees as well as three different master s degrees. Of our undergraduate degree recipients, more than half now earn degrees in various professional and technical areas rather than in such liberal arts disciplines as religion and philosophy, although these of course are vital to our academic program. News of the name change generally has been greeted positively on campus and in the community, and the announcement earned a round of applause at the Alumni Weekend luncheon. This is not to say there have not been concerns. Some students and parents questioned whether becoming a university would mandate an extraordinary increase in tuition. Others wondered if the name change meant that faculty would focus on research instead of teaching. Still others have asked if we intend to add a doctoral program. The answer to all three questions is no. We are committed to maintaining Siena s well-earned reputation as a highly affordable institution, and to sustaining our position as one of the best values among all private colleges in Michigan. We will continue to be a teaching campus, where faculty focus on the classroom, not the research lab. And we have no plans to offer doctoral degrees, now or any time in the future. We do expect to see some benefits from the name change, primarily in terms of marketing Siena as a university and distinguishing us from other colleges. International students tend to be more interested in attending a university, since the word college means high school in some countries, so the new name will be a plus in that regard, also. But our core mission and our commitment to students will not change. We are and will remain a mission-driven, student-centered institution. As some early graduates remember, this college has been through a name change before. Founded in 1919 as an outgrowth of St. Joseph Academy, we began our history as St. Joseph College. That name lasted for two decades; but the confusion of having two schools side by side, both called St. Joseph, led to the first name change in 1939. The college was renamed Siena Heights in honor of Catherine of Siena, a 14th century Italian Dominican who dedicated her life to a quest for truth and social responsibility, and in recognition of our location on the highest land in the surrounding area. Siena Heights College will confer degrees on its final graduating class at Commencement ceremonies in May. The change will become official July 1, 1998, and Siena Heights University will award its first degrees to students completing their studies in August. Campus events throughout the 1998-99 academic year, from Fall Convocation and Alumni Weekend through Commencement, will include recognition and celebration of the name change. Don Taylor, our vice president for advancement, is chairing the committee that is coordinating the name change process. Suggestions or comments about the Siena Heights University name and/or the changeover process may be directed to Don in the Advancement Office at (517) 264-7140.

Richard B. Artman

From the Campuses Artman Receives Renewal of Three-Year Contract After three years as chief executive of Siena Heights, President Rick Artman was given a three-year contract renewal by the College s Board of Trustees, beginning July 1, 1997. Rick and his wife, Joan, came to Siena Heights in August 1994. We are extremely pleased with the leadership Rick has brought to Siena Heights, Board chairperson John Tierney said. During his tenure, Siena Heights has strengthened its educational processes, invigorated its Catholic identity and relationships with the communities it serves, and is addressing its future operations through a broad-based strategic planning process. During the first three years of Artman s presidency, the College opened new off-campus degree completion centers in Lansing and Kalamazoo (and now Jackson--see below). With strong support from local banking institutions, Siena Heights also issued $4 million in tax-exempt bonds to fund a vast array of physical plant improvements including roofs, floors, heating and ventilation systems, driveways, parking lots, and assorted internal and structural repairs. Siena Heights is a student-focused, missiondriven institution, Artman commented. We work at all times to serve the needs and dreams of our diverse student body, while empowering the Adrian Dominican values that are at the core of our mission. Artman s new contract extends from July 1997 through June 2000.

News Wrap-Up: Litigation Supports Siena Siena Heights was in Federal District Court in Detroit this fall, defending against a claim brought by a former professor. After a nine-day trial, the jury ruled in favor of Siena Heights on all charges brought before it, and the judge also ruled in Siena s favor on a directed verdict motion. As is often,

perhaps always, true, the case was more complex than some may have assumed, President Rick Artman said afterward. Former philosophy professor Anne Russell Mayeaux charged that the College s decision not to renew her contract was an act of retaliation in response to her having previously filed a sexual harassment complaint against a faculty colleague at Siena. The College denied there was retaliation, arguing that the employment decision was based on other issues. I regret the distraction of this lawsuit to our students, faculty, staff and friends of the College, Artman said. However, I have confidence in our faculty and faith in our policies and procedures. I firmly believe that, throughout all of the events with which this case dealt, the College did what was right, lawful, and necessary for the wellbeing of the institution. We remain absolutely committed to maintaining a safe, healthy, fair and ethical teaching and learning environment at Siena Heights. A related suit filed by former English professor David Calonne was settled out of court following the conclusion of the first case.

Student Activities Program Expands Volunteer Focus The student activity center at Siena Heights (Adrian campus) has become the Student Activities and Volunteer Center, bringing volunteer programs into the centralized student activities area in Sage Union. Now, such programs as the Crop Walk, Make A Difference Day and the Rake Run are coordinated by student activities head Terry Carlson, instead of the counseling center staff as in the past. It is part of the Catholic tradition to serve others, said Michele Buku, dean of students. It s important that we encourage volunteering.

Kevin and Mary Kucera

New Admissions Dean is Familiar Face at Siena Kevin Kucera, a former director of financial aid at Siena Heights, returned to campus this fall, bringing 16 years experience to his new job as dean of admissions and enrollment services. A 1981 graduate of Mount Mercy College in Iowa, Kucera began his career in admissions and financial aid at his alma mater before coming to Siena in 1985. After three years heading Siena s financial aid office, he went to Edgewood College in Wisconsin, first as director of financial aid, then as dean of admissions and financial aid. At Siena, he manages admissions, financial aid and the registrar s office. Kevin s wife, Mary, an Adrian native, formerly worked in Siena s registrar s office.

SHC Opens Degree Center at JCC; off-campus programs number 8 The recent opening of a Siena Heights degree completion center at Jackson Community College brings the number of off-campus programs for working adult students to eight. The JCC program offers junior and senior level daytime and evening courses to students completing either a B.A. or a Bachelor of Applied Science. Siena Heights now offers B.A. and B.A.S. degreecompletion programs in Monroe, Southfield (including a satellite office in Harper Woods), Jackson, Battle Creek,

5 Lansing, Kalamazoo and Benton Harbor, as well as on the Adrian campus. In addition, the College operates a certificate program in theological studies with the Catholic Diocese of Lansing; students interested in a B.A. can complete an undergraduate contracted major in ministry through the program.

Student Senate Update By Keith Rusie 99, Treasurer This has been an exciting year for Student Senate. We began the year by revising our constitution, successfully addressing food service concerns, allocating money for student activities, polling students for their input on the proposed schedule change, sponsoring a successful blood drive for the Red Cross, and holding a retreat which featured former Senate presidents Alex Harvey Quinn 91 and Scott Dienes 90 as speakers. Current projects include assisting Campus Ministry by gaining student input for the development of faith programming, planning a faculty/staff appreciation day, preparing for the late night breakfast, and exploring suggestions for a Senate-sponsored campus beautification project. Future plans include Sr. Carmie Day (campus beautification), a semi-formal dance, election of next year s officers, and regular reporting to the Reflections newsletter. We are proud of our accomplishments and look forward to the challenges ahead. We welcome alumni input; contact Keith Rusie, treasurer, at (517) 264-7071.

Faculty Update: Honors, Awards, Activities Spencer Bennett, professor of history and religious studies, had his review of the text, Jazz Styles: History & Analysis (6th Edition) by Mark Gridley, published in Jazz Notes: A Newsletter for the Jazz Journalists Association. Dr. Bennett is the jazz reviewer for the Musical Heritage Society. David Hermon, assistant professor of counselor education, led a roundtable presentation on Reflecting and Connecting on the Internet at the Western Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (WACES) 1997 convention in Santa Barbara, CA. Hermon co-presented with Max and Arleen Lewis of Western Washington University, whom he met for the first time at the conference after five years of close professional communication via the internet. The three speakers shared their insights on how the internet can help counselors reflect on their work, connect with mentors, improve teaching and research, and stay current in their field. Br. Frank Rotsaert, CSC, assistant professor of English, has had two entries accepted for what will be the forthcoming reference book, An Encyclopedia of American Literature of the Sea and the Great Lakes. Scheduled for publication in two years by Greenwood Press, the book is edited by Jill Gidmark of the University of Minnesota. Rotsaert s first article is on Thomas Baily Aldrich, poet and fiction writer of the late 19th-early 20th century who is perhaps best known for the classic novel, The Story of a Bad Boy. Rotsaert s second entry in the encyclopedia is about children s novelist William T. Adams who commonly wrote under the pen name Oliver Optic; the most popular writer of children s fiction in the 19th century, Adams novels were often serialized and frequently took place in a sea setting.

Wellness Team Promotes a Healthier Campus A new Wellness Team is promoting health and fitness on the Adrian campus. Made up of college nurse Norma Baldwin, counseling services director Carol Stuut, campus ministry director Deena Jarmosevich, OP, and athletic trainer Gerry Schlemer, the wellness team aims to educate students, faculty and staff about the importance of maintaining a healthy mind, body and spirit. The counseling center and campus ministry office have been relocated near the health center, making that the wellness wing of Ledwidge Hall. Often, if one part of the body is out of sync, other parts may be affected. We want to do whatever is necessary to get the whole person working together, Baldwin said. We only have the students here at Siena for four years, but we can educate them for a lifetime.

Exploring Our Religious Foundations The mission of Siena Heights, a Catholic college founded and sponsored by the Adrian Dominican Sisters, is to assist people to become more competent, purposeful and ethical through a teaching and learning environment which respects the dignity of all. (Adopted by the Board of Trustees, October 1997)

E

arlier this academic year, the Board of Trustees approved a new mission statement for Siena Heights, concluding the work of a campus committee chaired by trustee J. Patrick Murphy, CM. The trio of growth objectives-competent, purposeful, ethical--give the new statement an old familiar ring. But there is an important change. The updated mission lifts up, proudly and prominently, the college s Catholic identity and Dominican heritage. To some, this change might seem unremarkable; but it is evidence of a significant shift in attitude at Siena Heights. After omitting all mention of religion in its mission, the college now is affirming, even promoting, its Catholic foundation. And the precise nature of that foundation--what it means, or should mean, to be a Catholic college generally, and an Adrian Dominican college in particular--has become a topic of serious discussion in many quarters of the community. Since coming to the college in 1994, President Rick Artman has highlighted Siena s Catholic identity as an institutional strength deserving increased attention, both on and off the campus. The life and ministry of Jesus Christ was about betterment, he said at his inauguration. A Catholic college, as it bridges the intersection of faith and culture, ought to be about betterment. He went on to challenge the students, faculty, alumni and friends of Siena Heights to stay focused on what we are called to do, and to be, as a Catholic college, as a Dominican college, as a college whose business is betterment. There is no question that Siena s Catholic character expresses itself differently today than in the past. No longer do students attend daily Mass. No longer do Adrian Dominican Sisters conduct flashlight checks to ensure resident students are in, and in bed, at proper times. No longer are all, or even most, faculty and administrators members of religious congregations. Up to and after Vatican II, students were very involved as Catholics. Daily Mass and mission crusades were part and parcel of the college experience, but that was characteristic of the times, observes archivist and chemistry professor emerita Helen Duggan, OP 41. Throughout the 1970s, Siena Heights--and many other schools--moved away from highlighting its tradition of Catholic education, Helen explains. The number of Adrian Dominicans teaching and working at the college began a

steady decline. Student religious involvement became a matter of personal choice and responsibility. Students were more likely to express their values through leadership and student projects than through formal religious activity. Despite these changes the Dominican influence never disappeared, Sister Helen believes: The values are being transmitted today through wonderfully dedicated faculty and staff. The quality of people on campus is awesome. These days, Sunday evening liturgies attract 30-40 students weekly, and campus ministry director Deena Jarmosevich, OP 93, coordinates a variety of spiritual and service programs, from Soup and Scripture to Rekindling the Flame of Human Potential. Although Helen Duggan believes that interest in Siena s religious heritage has increased under President Artman s leadership, Sister Deena joins many faculty in the belief that there is little overt Catholic emphasis at Siena today. Catholicism is not a given anymore, says Greg Schira 89 of the graduate studies office, an active Catholic and a leader in campus liturgical life. He adds, We are more pluralistic today, which is good. The external manifestations of Catholicism have changed, but the important foundational values are very much alive here, says Mary Weeber of the English faculty. I think students are mostly affected by the openness of Siena, the drawing in and encouragement of a community that really does care about them. Students don t realize it at first, agrees Michele Buku 74, dean of students, but Siena s religious foundation does affect them because we truly are a caring institution. Two groups at Siena Heights recently have been involved in formal explorations of the college s Catholic identity. A student-faculty-staff committee appointed by President Artman is considering how best to implement Pope John Paul II s apostolic constitution Ex corde Ecclesiae at Siena. The group has drafted a preliminary statement that articulates elements of the Catholic intellectual tradition (a search for truth informed by the conviction that faith and reason are not contradictory but mutually informative) and the Adrian Dominican tradition (commitment to justice, service and the continued interaction between reflection and action); and identifies eight ways Siena Heights expresses its Catholic character. Those expressions include respecting the dignity of

7 every individual, welcoming persons of all faiths, and championing justice and service, as well as providing courses about the Catholic faith and celebrating the sacramental life of the church. A second group, headed by Dom Scibilia of the religious studies department, has focused on the future of the church-related college as part of a nationwide inquiry funded by the Lilly Endowment and coordinated by Rhodes College. The seven faculty involved produced thoughtful essays exploring ways to integrate Catholic and Dominican influences into college life. The essays have been gathered into a publication called Contemplation and Sharing the Fruits of Our Contemplation, reflecting a motto of the Adrian Dominican Sisters. In her essay on The Catholic and Dominican Dimensions of Siena s Identity, academic dean Sharon Weber, OP 69 explores in depth many of the same foundation elements included in the Ex corde committee s draft. She goes on to spotlight two particular challenges facing Catholic colleges like Siena Heights. One such challenge is Ex corde Ecclesiae s call for reflection on knowledge in the light of faith. Catholic colleges have the potential to be a key site for a real dialog between faith and reason, she says, but Ex corde reads as though truth about all things is the special province of the Church. Any such claim of exclusive access to the truth is likely to alienate today s society even faster than it did Galileo s world, she cautions. continued on next page

Catholic Connections In its outreach to working adults seeking a college education, Siena Heights has established seven degree completion centers across the state--including two centers with offices at Catholic high schools. The Metropolitan Detroit Program, headquartered in Southfield, operates a thriving satellite office at Notre Dame High School in Harper Woods. The Kalamazoo Center maintains offices at Hackett Catholic Central High School as well as offering classes at Kalamazoo Valley Community College s downtown campus. In partnership with the Diocese of Lansing, Siena Heights offers a Program in Theological Studies, which provides the academic component for adults in the Diocesan Ministry Formation Program. Classes are offered at various sites within the Diocese, including Flint, Ann Arbor, Lansing and Jackson, as well as on the Siena Heights campus in Adrian. Level I of the certificate program consists of 18 hours of undergraduate theology credit; Level II is an additional 18 hours in theology. Completion of both levels could constitute a major in ministry for a student seeking a bachelor s degree. Jodie Screes, OP 53, coordinates the program; Susan Conley Weeks 67, chair of religious studies, directs the curriculum. Siena Heights has established partnerships with several area Catholic high schools in recent months, including Central Catholic in Toledo, St. Mary Catholic Central in Monroe and Dominican in Detroit. Discussions will soon be underway with St. Philip in Battle Creek, Lumen Christi in Jackson, and Gabriel Richard in Ann Arbor. Through the partnerships, the college and schools seek to explore mutual opportunities and meet mutual needs, President Artman said. Faculty lectures, admissions and financial aid workshops, special receptions and a continued tradition of Catholic education are among the benefits offered through the outreach program.

Catholic Identity Values in Action: Enhancing Diversity

T

he Catholic church teaches that every person should be treated with dignity and as academic dean Sharon Weber, OP 69 points out, a Catholic college has an institutional duty to allow and help every individual within the community be the most fully human that he or she can be. At Siena Heights that duty was embodied in the recent initiative to increase and retain racial and ethnic diversity at the Adrian campus, a threeyear program which concluded this fall. Supported by a $150,000 grant from the Lilly Endowment, faculty, staff and students explored ways to improve the campus climate for diversity. Grant director Susan Conley Weeks identified four project objectives: (1) to enable college leaders to sharpen their awareness and strengthen their commitment to diversity, (2) to assess the current climate for diversity, (3) to infuse the teaching and learning environment with inter-disciplinary diversity experiences, and (4) to increase opportunities for the community to identify cultural characteristics different from their own--as well as common threads of humanity which bind all people together. Grant activities significantly influenced college life from October 1994 to November 1997. Faculty and administrators took a hard look at their own beliefs and responses, and engaged in an in-depth study of attitudes on campus. Seven Discovery Teams of students, faculty and staff undertook widely different multi-year diversity projects, ranging from a study of plays dealing with Jewish and African-American issues and creation of an original one-act play; to a monthly newsletter exploring Latino/ Hispanic culture; to a cross-cultural business project that linked Siena s Mexico study program, the Business Division and the Students in Free Enterprise group. Perhaps the most prominent influence of the Lilly grant was The Face and Voice of Culture, a three-year series of major art gallery exhibitions with related activities in music, dance, literature and drama. The series attracted major public notice while focusing attention on the art and culture of classical India, contemporary Australia, the Holocaust, Native America and the Afro-Brazilian population. At a concluding celebration of the Lilly project in December, a featured reading seemed to sum up the spiritual basis for this important three-year undertaking: O Source of All Being...encourage me as I dare to take risks with You, so that together we can transform our world...

8 Exploring continued But, writes Weber, the plurality of faiths within our community and the need to be faithful to accord each person the respect he or she deserves presents, I believe, the greatest challenge for today s college in the Catholic tradition. She goes on to ask, Is there a way to privilege one belief system that allows an honest openness to, and therefore privileging of, other belief systems? I suspect it is on our ability to take on the challenge of exploring such a relationship that our remaining a Catholic college hinges. There is support among both Catholic and non-Catholic faculty for trying to strengthen Siena s Catholic identity. I believe it would do wonders for the quality of the curriculum, and also for the quantity of students searching for authentic meaning in their lives and careers who would be attracted to us, says business professor Chuck Milliken, an evangelical Protestant. Opinions vary, of course, on how to do it. I would not advocate mandatory chapel, says philosophy professor Mark Schersten, a Lutheran, but I would support more required courses that are connected with our religious foundation, a common hour for reflection and a more active campus church. Pat Schnapp, RSM, of the English department recommends a more visible and prominent celebration of holy days and Catholic rituals. Mark DiPietro of the theatre department reflects a widely held concern when he recommends hiring more Adrian Dominicans or members of other Catholic religious congregations. Nadine Foley, OP 45, professor of religious studies and former interim president, is one of several people to suggest expanding campus ministry from a staff of one to a team, including an ordained priest. I think what we need to do more than anything is to celebrate as a community, says Mary Weeber. Nurturing and enlivening our sense of community will strengthen our values as an institution. The discussion of when, where, how and how much Siena Heights expresses its Catholic identity will not end soon, nor should it. This is, perhaps, the fundamental dialog which distinguishes this Catholic and Dominican college. In the end, the college s identity is the identity of its people. My Catholic identity is how I see the world and the world is dependent on God, says Miriam Michael Stimson, OP 36, professor emerita of chemistry and graduate studies. Siena Heights has never lost its Catholic identity, she adds. It has just altered it to fit the world around us. Thanks to all faculty and staff who assisted me in preparing this story. JHC

9 Values in Action: Service to Others Serving others is part of the Catholic tradition and Siena students sustain the tradition in various ways. Last spring, a delegation of nine students, all members of SAVE (Siena Against Violent Environments), spent their spring break in Appalachia with SAVE faculty advisor Dom Scibilia as volunteers assisting with construction projects, housing assistance and health care. This spring, Pat Schnapp of the English faculty plans to lead another volunteer group to Jamaica to work at a school for orphaned and delinquent boys. Closer to home, Siena Heights students are involved in a range of service projects, from Make a Difference Day and the annual CROP walk to Red Cross blood drives and philanthropic fund raising. Siena Heights graduates continue to serve in many ways long after they leave the campus. Of special note in this regard is the recent election of Janet Capone, OP 80 as Prioress of the Adrian Dominican Congregation, effective July 1.

Siena Heights Archives: Preserving our Past for the Future Who is there left among you that saw this temple in its former glory? And how does it look to you now? (Haggai 2:3-4) With those words, Helen Duggan, OP 41 (formerly Sister Ann Charles) (at right in photo) and Marie Irene Miller, OP 36 began their 1987 report on the history of Siena Heights buildings and the rooms within them. That report--which documents the evolution, for example, of Sacred Heart Hall 102, from home economics lab to storage area, art studio, admissions office, development office, and now communications and alumni relations office--marked the start of an ongoing historical research project and the beginning of the Siena Heights Archives. Sister Marie Irene now offers encouragement from the sidelines as Sister Helen leads the effort to gather, organize and catalogue the papers, pictures, publications and memorabilia that give shape and meaning to the history of Siena Heights. Official records and Adrian Dominican documents, school yearbooks and student scrapbooks, and tapes of 120 oral interviews with faculty, staff and graduates of many eras are among the pieces of this historical puzzle. First housed in a former janitor s closet, the Archives (established officially by President Artman in 1996) now have a permanent home in the Library, where Sister Helen is centralizing records and establishing a consistent filing system. A 1996 grant from the Michigan State Historical

Records Advisory Board enabled Helen to engage a professional consultant, hire student assistants and purchase proper storage materials. A 1997 gift from an anonymous friend of the college will support necessary renovations in the Archives office. I am not writing a history of the college. I am just preserving its history, Sister Helen says modestly. Those who see her at work, week after week, know that s a big just. And thanks to her work, those who build this Catholic college s future, now and tomorrow, will have a better record of this temple in its former glory.

Add Your Piece to the Puzzle When cleaning closets or emptying attics, remember: Your discards may be an archivist s treasures. Instead of throwing them away, send yearbooks, pictures and event programs to the Siena Heights College Archives, c/o Helen Duggan, OP, or call Sister Helen at (517) 264-7648. When packaging information, always indicate dates and names, and include your own name, address and telephone number in case questions arise.

Gifts & Giving 1996/97 Donor Report

A Message of Thanks From the Board of Trustees

n behalf of the Siena Heights College Board of Trustees, it is my honor to express appreciation to all who supported the College during 1996-97. To our faculty and staff who give so much of themselves, beyond their daily tasks, in talent, knowledge, and dedication, we thank you for providing a quality education to the students we serve. To our students who are working hard to earn their degrees and to their families who are stretching their finances to support these efforts, we encourage your commitment. To our alumni whose leadership and contributions in their various careers and communities bring honor to the College, we send our sincere congratulations. To all the businesses, organizations, foundations and individuals who so generously support our mission, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for believing in Siena Heights College.

O

Through your gifts, the College realized many accomplishments. First, we are pleased to have met, and slightly exceeded, the 1996-97 Annual Fund goal. Secondly, we Gifts & Giving have been blessed with significant gifts to increase our endowment 1996-97 fund. The Herrick Foundation completed its $1,000,000 gift to endow the Sister Cathleen Real Scholarship Fund. The Sage Foundation finalized its endowed professorship in child drama and its endowed scholarship in honor of Margaret J. Mudgett. These gifts are particularly important because they support scholarship and academic programming in perpetuity!

12

While building our endowment, we have been able to attend to physical plant improvements through restricted contributions for that purpose. External building repairs, internal renovations, and equipment purchases have improved not only the appearance of our campus but also the quality of teaching and learning. Such improvements reflect President Artman s pursuit of an educational environment which is safe, attractive and productive. The College enjoys broad-based financial support from alumni, corporations, foundations, parents and friends of the College. Such support represents a true partnership and confirms our sense of community. I speak for all Board of Trustee members when I say we are proud to belong to the Siena family. Gratefully,

John Tierney Chairperson of the Board

Gifts & Giving

The New Siena Heights College Annual Fund Many changes have occurred in Siena s Annual Fund Program. In the recent past, the Annual Fund offered only three levels of giving recognition. We now have five giving levels, as well as a special lifetime giving society. We hope these new benchmarks will allow donors to find the level of gift support with which they are most comfortable. We also have established specific benefits for each gift level. These benefits are a way to bring you, the donor, closer to Siena Heights and to bring Siena Heights closer to you. Giving Update Corporate Colleagues The 1996-97 year saw the establishment of the first ever Siena Heights College Corporate Fund Campaign. Chaired by Trustee Allan Brittain, this campaign sought to solicit funds from Lenawee County businesses for annual scholarship support. Companies that gave $1,000 or more established scholarships in their businesses names, which were awarded to deserving students from Lenawee County. The volunteer campaign committee strengthened already significant support from the Lenawee business community by raising more than $15,000 from new corporate donors. The 1997-98 Corporate Fund Campaign is now in full swing. Chaired once again by Allan Brittain, the committee of local business and community leaders hopes to double last year s total and push the mark over $30,000 in new scholarship giving. I cannot say enough good things about our corporate volunteers, said Jeff Freshcorn, director of annual fund programs. They are just fantastic.

Looking Good A significant gift from The Herrick Foundation will fund a variety of physical plant projects on the Adrian campus including new carpet for the hallways in Ledwidge and Archangelus residence halls, further renovations in our science labs, improvements to student recreational areas, new furnishings for the small special events dining room in Benincasa, and landscaping Gifts & Giving around the Fieldhouse. An earlier gift from Charles and 1996-97 Maddie Hikes provided landscaping around Dominican Hall.

Technology Support Technology enhancements are the focus of a $100,000 gift from the Adrian Dominican Sisters. The grant made possible a new 24-hour computer room in the residence halls, enabling students to continue working after the 11 p.m closing (5 p.m. Friday and Saturday) of the Dominican Hall computer center. The gift also provides funds for other technology needs as well as development support for the college web page (www.sienahts.edu). Over the last few years, the Adrian Dominicans have been very generous to Siena, providing support for admissions and marketing, capital improvements, campus signs, endowment and technology.

Play Ball! The College recently received a generous gift from Ms. Wilma Christensen in memory of her parents, George and Wilma Christensen, to construct a softball field for our women s varsity softball team. The field, to be located on the current practice soccer field, also will be available for intramurals. This project addresses an important equity issue within the athletic program and should assist with student recruitment, as well.

Home Improvements Thanks to the strong support of the Lenawee banking community, Siena Heights has made many vital physical plant repairs and improvements funded through a $4 million tax-exempt bond issue. Included in the long list of improvements: a new roof, new floor, and new lighting, heating and ventilation systems for the Fieldhouse; resurfaced driveways and parking lots; new or repaired roofs for Benincasa, Lumen Chapel and the Performing Arts Center; new elevator, storage shed and other improvements for Studio Angelico; and assorted repairs in Ledwidge and Archangelus Halls.

Fund to honor David Van Horn Father David Van Horn--priest, professor and artist-significantly influenced the lives of his students through his inspirational spirit, innovative instruction and creative genius. Father David, now a professor emeritus, retired last spring after nearly 30 years on the Siena Heights faculty. In honor of his contributions to the life and spirit of the college, Siena Heights is establishing a fund in David Van Horn s name. The fund will help provide quality exhibits, artists in residence, and art lectures and presentations which further the pursuit of fine art that Father David has shared so generously and passionately with Siena. Alumni and friends interested in learning more about this fund raising effort may contact Karen Glaser in the Advancement Office, (517) 264-7142.

President s Cabinet Dinner Celebrates Championship Support! Gifts & Giving 1996-97

About 100 donors, faculty, staff and students gathered in a glitteringly transformed Siena Heights Fieldhouse October 19 for the 1997 President s Cabinet Dinner, themed A Celebration of Champions. Sponsor hosts for the evening were Adrian residents Doug and Fern Shierson. Entertainment was provided by Coach Fred Smith and the men s basketball team. President s Cabinet chair Byron Stickles 80/ 83 introduced new Cabinet members (annual fund donors of $1,000 or more). The highlight of the evening was featured speaker Patrick Irwin 86, who captivated the audience with his comments about growing up in inner city Detroit, the problems urban youth face today, and how Siena Heights and its supporters changed his own life and continue changing lives today. A labor relations administrator with Henry Ford Health Systems, Pat s abiding passion is his volunteer job as head cross country coach at his former high school, Detroit Holy Redeemer. Members of his current team, as well as former Redeemer runner Tony Galvan, now a Siena student, joined Pat at the podium. This event is just one small way the college can show donors how much their support means, said Jeff Freshcorn, director of annual fund programs. (Photos from top to bottom): Featured speaker Patrick Irwin 86 caught up with Siena student Tony Galvan, a former Detroit Holy Redeemer runner. President s Cabinet Dinner sponsor hosts Doug and Fern Shierson (left) visited with Joan and Rick Artman. Rick Artman thanks Ms. Wilma Christensen for her generosity in donating a gift to construct a softball field on the Siena campus. The field will be named in memory of Wilma s parents, George and Wilma Christensen. Vice President for Advancement Don Taylor and his wife Sharon enjoyed their first President s Cabinet Dinner. Don came to Siena in August 1997.

Siena Heights College Athletics -- Fall 1997 Highlights The women s cross country team successfully defended its WHAC conference title on November 1 in Grand Rapids. SHC coach Don Kleinow s team had its best finish ever (11th place out of 35 teams) at the NAIA National Cross Country Championships on November 15 in Kenosha, WI.

The women s volleyball team had its best season in recent history with a 26-15 final record. First-year coach Nicole McCleary s team won more games than the previous two years combined at SHC. The Saints tied for fifth in the league standings.

Senior Tina Richards won the league MVP award for the second straight year and earned NAIA All-American honors by placing fourth at the national championships. Her fourth-place effort was the best individual finish ever by an SHC runner at the national championship meet.

Krista Purvis earned 1st-Team All-WHAC honors and was a 2nd-Team All-Region setter for the Saints. Mariann Bauman was an NAIA All-America Scholar-Athlete for the second time. Bauman was an NAIA Scholar-Athlete last spring on the Saints softball team.

The Saints also had three NAIA All-America ScholarAthletes in Stephanie Sarles, Annie Stawasz and Amanda Tabb. With their cumulative 3.17 grade point average, the team ranked #10 in the team academic standings at the national championships.

At the conclusion of the fall sports season, Siena Heights College was tied for thirteenth (out of 360 NAIA institutions) in the Sears Directors Cup standings. The Saints had their best finish last year in the annual competition by placing 29th overall.

The women s soccer team (18-4) went undefeated in league play (10-0) and advanced to the Great Lakes Regional Semi-finals. Coach Aldo Zid s club had five players named to the All-WHAC team and Amy Gillin was an honorable mention NAIA All-American for the Saints. Gillin was also named an NAIA All-America ScholarAthlete with a 3.80 grade point average. Nicole Tobin set single-season records for points scored (69) and assists (19) in only her first season of collegiate soccer. Corey Kibit set a school record by recording thirteen shutouts in goal for the Saints. The men s cross country team finished second in the WHAC conference and earned an at-large bid to the NAIA National Championships. Coach Tim Bauer s team, which had three runners earn All-WHAC honors, placed sixteenth (out of 35 teams) at the national meet. Brian Smith, who was an NAIA All-America Scholar-Athlete last spring for track and field, was an NAIA ScholarAthlete this fall for cross country. Senior fullback Ridge Frew closed out an outstanding fouryear SHC soccer career by being named the WHAC Player-of-the-Year. Frew was also named an honorable mention NAIA All-American for the second straight season. Coach Aldo Zid s club, which had only one senior and two juniors on the roster, tied for third place in the league standings.

The men s basketball team has picked up where it left off after last year s incredible season. Coach Fred Smith s team won the National Catholic Basketball Tournament November 23 in Dubuque, IA. The Saints have competed in the NCBT fourteen times and had never reached the championship game until this year. Anthony Staffney was named tournament MVP and Dan McKian was an AllTournament Team selection for the Saints. The Saints, ranked #4 in the NAIA in January (their highest ever ranking), are currently (February 8) 21-6. SHC coach Fred Smith, who picked up NCBT Coach-ofthe-Tournament honors in Dubuque, passed the 300-win mark recently in his 13th season as the Saints basketball coach. The women s basketball team won its tournament (SHC Tip-Off Tournament) December 6 with a victory over Indiana Tech. Jessica Spiegel was named the Tournament MVP and Bevin Malley made the All-Tournament Team for the Saints. Spiegel and Malley were both named NCBT Bill Bradley All-American Scholars at the National Catholic Basketball Tournament. The women are currently 12-13 (February 8).

Awards are open to graduates of Siena Heights College (St. Joseph s College prior to 1939). An alumna or alumnus may be nominated for consideration by another graduate, a member of the faculty or staff, or another person who knows the nominee and the College well. Final selection of award recipients rests with the Alumni Association Board of Directors, which reserves the right to consider a nominee for an award other than that selected by the nominator. Each award may, but will not necessarily, be presented annually. Nominations must be received by June 1, 1998.

Foundations and Inspirations The statue of three angels, located in the center of Trinity Garden on the Siena Heights campus, provides the image on the front cover of this issue of Reflections. The three angels, symbolizing the Blessed Trinity, were designed originally as a fountain and once stood on a raised foundation above a reflecting pool. Other statues in the garden depict St. Augustine (page 9) pondering the mystery of the Trinity in his legendary encounter with a child, and St. Cecelia, patroness of musicians (shown at left). At its dedication in 1931, Trinity Garden was bordered only by Sacred Heart Hall and Walsh Hall (now called Sage Student Union); orchards and rolling hills stretched to the north and west. The construction in 1938 of Archangelus Residence Hall and Benincasa Dining Hall enclosed Trinity Garden, making it the heart of the growing campus. The statues in Trinity Garden, and the welcoming marble image of Jesus in the lobby of Sacred Heart Hall (see page 11), are daily reminders of the faith and values upon which the College is founded.
