D − Il mondo del porno ha sempre affascinato l’industria cinematografica americana per il suo carattere eversivo, infatti, soprattutto negli ultimi anni, sembra che Hollywood si stia rivolgendo con sempre più crescente curiosità e sempre meno intento censorio alla pornografia, non solo attingendo a storie e vite dei suoi protagonisti (Wonderland su John Holmes e Lovelace su Linda Lovelace) ma anche riformulandone i codici linguistici, spesso in chiave parodica come nella commedia. Si può parlare di un’ossessione del cinema mainstrem nei confronti dei codici tipici della pornografia filmica? R − Hollywood è stata sempre affascinata dal porno e a tal proposito ho pubblicato un saggio1 su tre di questi film: 8MM, The People vs. Larry Flynt e Boogie Nights . Chiaramente è un’ossessione. Hollywood condivide l’opinione dominante, disapprovando l’attitudine americana intorno alla pornografia e a quelli che lavorano nella sua industria, ma vuole tracciare una linea tra i suoi film e quelli porno. Hollywood ha un interesse acquisito nel dire: «Guardate, siamo diversi nei film che facciamo e come industria. Siamo seri, gente responsabile, così noi facciamo film con temi seri sulla mancanza di moralità del porno, o commedie che si divertono a ridicolizzarlo». Ironicamente, Hollywood sfrutta il porno rappresentandolo come sfruttamento. D − La distinzione Hardcore/Softcore può considerarsi superata anche all’interno delle subculture pornografiche che si stanno imponendo nei circuiti mediali contemporanei? R − Questa è una bella domanda, ma meglio porla a un gruppo di ricerca con una vasta conoscenza delle subculture porno. Io posso tentare di rispondere esclusivamente da una prospettiva opposta poiché il mio studio sulla pornografia si è sempre concentrato sul mainstream. Sono sempre stato particolarmente interessato a momenti in cui il porno e le nuove forme di tecnologia s’intrecciano, per esempio, l’home video e

Q − The American Film Industry has always been fascinated by the world of Porn because of its transgressive character. Especially the last years, it seems that Hollywood is looking at it with even more curiosity and less censorious intent, not only to tell stories and lives of its stars (Wonderland about John Holmes’s life or Lovelace about Deep Throat co-star Linda Lovelace for example), but also reformulating its linguistic codes in parodies for its comedy genre. Can we talk about an obsession by the mainstream cinema against the typical pornographic film codes? A − Hollywood has long been fascinated with porn and I have published an essay about three of those films, 8MM, The People vs. Larry Flynt, and Boogie Nights : “Bad, Worse, Worst: 8MM and Hollywood’s Bad Boys of Porn,” in Bad: Infamy, Darkness, Evil and Slime on Screen edited by Murray Pomerance (Albany: State University of New York Press, 2004), pp. 79-92. Clearly there is an obsession. Hollywood shares the dominant, disapproving American attitude towards porn and those who work in the industry, but also wants to draw a line between its films and porn films. Hollywood has a vested interest in saying, “Look, we are different in the films we make and as an industry. We are serious, responsible people so we make films with serious themes about porn’s lack of morality or comedies, which make fun of it as ludicrous.” Ironically, Hollywood exploits porn by representing it as exploitation. Q − Is it possible to find a Hard-core/Soft-core distinction even between the contemporary pornographic subcultures? A − This is a good question, but one best put to a panel with a wide knowledge of porn subcultures. I can only answer this from nearly the opposite perspective since my research on pornography has been focused on the mainstream. I have been particularly interested in the intersection between porn and new forms of technology, for example home video and the rise of so-
