About the event Cold Chain industry at a Glance

• The total market value of Indian cold chain industry is expected to reach Rs 640 billion by end by 2017, according to a report. • During the period 2009-2017, the cold chain industry of India is expected to register a magnificent CAGR of around 25.8 per cent. • India’s second largest producer of vegetables and fruits after China. India on an average produces 85 million tonnes of vegetables and 45 million tonnes of fruits annually. • India’s overall contribution in world trade is quite dismal as the country losses about 30 to 40 per cent of its fruits and vegetables due to improper cold storage facilities.

Investments in the sector at a Glance Government approves Rs 231 crore for additional 30 cold chain projects The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MOFPI) has so far approved 49 projects, which are targeted to create an additional cold chain capacity of 2.31 lakh tonnes, 234 reefer vehicles and 34 tonnes per hour of individual quick freezing capacity. The total project cost of the 49 projects is Rs 1072.82 crore that involves government grant of Rs 380.41 crore and private investment of Rs 691.61 crore.

Food Park, Cold Chain norms may be relaxed The government is planning to revamp its existing schemes of food parks to promote food processing industries in the country. It plans to remove restrictions over the number of food parks and cold chains inviting more entrepreneurs interested in setting up food parks and cold chains.

Budget 2013: Stimulus required for agriculture warehousing & cold chain infrastructure The industry has been asking for a special window to finance such projects at a concessional rate of interest with a loan repayment period that should stretch to at least 15 years. The Finance Minister had in the 2012 Budget announced a Rs. 5000 crore allocation exclusively for creation of warehousing facilities using RIDF funds.

India’s food services market may touch $28 billion by 2018: Report India’s organised food services market is expected to grow by 16 per cent over the next five years and touch $ 28 billion on the back of changing consumption habits of consumers and emergence of new players in the sector, a report said. The National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) in its report said that the size of the total market (organised and unorganised) is $ 13 billion in 2013 and is expected to grow to $ 78 billion by 2018.
