RGVSPORTS.COM FALL 2011

Who would play these coaches? After Dave Favila stole my column idea for this edition (OK, he didn’t really steal it, he just beat me to the punch on page 45), I was going to write the typical back-to-school column to open up a new season of sports in this here space. But then I changed my mind and figured something a little different was in order for this edition. But then my third column > OSCAR idea proved to GONZALEZ, JR. be a harder task due to technological issues. So, with three column ideas crashing and burning, I needed something else. Something that didn’t seem sound like it was my fourth column idea. Something ... I sort of “borrowed” from another website. Something got me To thinking about ESPN’s Page 2: You know, where they once had pictures of athletes and a picture of famous folks who resembled each other? Well, I’ve compiled a list with a slightly different idea that will either move me up on coaches speed dials or place me on an entirely different list. I listed eight football coaches and the corresponding actor/entertainer who could play them in a movie:

Harlingen High coach Manny Gomez and actor Timothy Olyphant.

Port Isabel coach Monty Stumbaugh and Wilford Brimley.

Weslaco High coach Tony Villarreal and Jack Nicholson.

Olyphant played the title character in “Hitman.” Coincidentally, Gomez was called “The Hitman” by the late Valley Morning Star scribe Buddy Green.

Coach Stumbaugh, I was really looking for a character that briefly makes an entrance on a Looney Tunes episode, but couldn’t find it. So ‘Cocoon’ dude will have to do.

This was a difficult one. I was looking for something between RoboCop and The Matrix. It’s the glasses and the stare behind them, I guess. “You can’t handle the truth!”

Weslaco East coach Armando Cuellar and Gilligan.

Mission Veterans coach David Gilpin and Ted Nugent.

This one was a no-brainer. Cuellar has made these hats his trademark over the years. Either that or we need to take another picture of him.

I don’t know if Gilpin is a fan, but I think this works nicely.

Edinburg High coach Joey Caceres and Harry Potter (actor Daniel Radcliffe).

These are two guys that I’ve never seen without their glasses. It’s not that bad, it could have been Scooter from The Muppets. PSJA High coach Mel Rios and ‘Machete’ (actor Danny Trejo)

We don’t expect coach Rios to go “Postal” on anyone. It’s all about the ’stache.

Grulla coach Abel Gonzalez and ‘Turtle’ (actor Jerry Ferrara)

Unheralded Ramirez sets tone for Cardinals' D ELADIO JAIMEZ | RGVSports.com

Jesse Mendoza | RGVSports.com

Daniel Ramirez might not get the media attention of Harlingen High teammates such as Randy Bermea, Kevin Ledesma or Brian Blake. But rest assured that Ramirez is as much a part of the team as the other three offensive starts. Ramirez will enter his third year on the varsity squad and second as a starter. Ramirez will start at safety for the Cardinals when they take the field for the 2011 season. Expectations are high once again in Harlingen and Ramirez hopes this will be a season to remember. The hard-hitting safety caught up with RGVSports.com The Magazine for a Q&A session. If you could play alongside any professional athletes, who would they be? Ed Reed (Baltimore Ravens) and Taylor Mays (San Francisco 49ers). Taylor is my idol…he’s a beast. And Ed Reed is Ed Reed, I’ve always looked up to him. What can we expect from the 2011 20

Harlingen Cardinals? A lot of exciting games. We’re not going to back down from anyone and we’re going to play for our hometown of Harlingen. What can we expect from you? Big hits, that’s for sure. As a defense, we’re out to shut teams down and play exciting football, God-willing.

RGVSPORTS.COM THE MAGAZINE

Describe Manny Gomez in a few words. Respected. Great coach. Big heart. Would you care to explain? He doesn’t see us as just another football team. He sees us as family and we see him as family too. I’m glad he’s our coach. I respect him…we all respect him.

Saenz's lack of size is source of motivation PETER RASMUSSEN | RGVSports.com

McAllen High Bulldogs center Brian “Bubba” Saenz doesn’t come with a lot of size. His coach lists him at 5-foot-10 and 215 pounds and that might be too generous. Despite his stature, Bulldogs coach Tony Harris said Saenz may be the best center in District 30-5A. Saenz has played center since he started playing football at the Boys and Girls club.

Gabe Hernandez | RGVSports.com

Why do they call you “Bubba”? Since I was little, everyone has always called me Bubba. I think it’s because my favorite food is shrimp. You know, Bubba Gump Shrimp. My dad was a coach here, so they would always call me Bubba. It has stuck. Do you like the nickname? Yeah For being on the offensive line, you’re not that big. Do you think people underestimate you? Since I’m smaller people think I’m not going to be able to get the job done, especially when a bigger nose tackle lines up against me. It gives me a chance to prove myself to show what I’m capable of. Coach Harris is kind of a mad man running up and down the field during games. Is he really as crazy as he seems on the sidelines? When it comes to game time? Yeah. When we are at practice, he is more calm. I think it is just during the games that he gets a little excited. What is your favorite reality TV show? I would have to say “Jersey Shore” because (the cast members) live a crazy life. What are you looking forward to the most about your senior year? I want us to win district and try and go undefeated and most important makes the playoffs and get past that first round. It’s been awhile since we have passed the first round.

> What's your favorite part of beginning a new school year?

I like to see how the incoming players have seen us grow and are ready to play.

The excitement of getting ready to start a new season.

My favorite part is that we’re all undefeated.

I guess it’s a fresh start from what happened last year, the past. You get to start over with a clean slate.

Getting to meet new people, see new things, teachers, and the studies.

The start of the football season, the excitement of putting on the shorts and the pads on and getting ready to get the season started.

It’s August, it’s hot, and that’s what it’s all about during August, football season’s here.

> What is it about football that piques your interest?

I get to help other people out but prove to the younger kids that anything is possible. I can show people that you can do anything if you really want it, no matter how hard the situation may be.

The Friday night lights, the intensity every night. Getting pumped up and being a leader. Working hard.

Football is comparable to life. You’ve got to learn to work hard. You’re not always going to get what you want but you have to get up every time, dust yourself off and keep working. Accept the pain and hard work that it takes to be excellent. The most important part, it’s not the destination, but the journey.

I guess just the rewards that come out of it, like after you win the game or score a touchdown, the rewards are really good afterward.

Getting to hit people without having to worry about getting in trouble or anything. Having the freedom to do pretty much anything on the field.

It’s just such a great game, you know, it’s a great teacher of life. You have the ups and downs of a season. It’s a sport that requires you to have great discipline, and now the offense and defense requires intelligence. It’s just an exciting game. It’s a game that, like I said, provides you with just great lessons, life lessons, I guess is what I’m looking for.

I would have to say just that urge to win, because we started the program, we built it, we were together when we came out, and we’re all working hard together just to compete and to keep trying to get to the next round, this group.

> Have you set any personal goals for the upcoming season, and if so, what are they?

On offense, as a running back, (gaining) 1,500 yards. Defensively, outside linebacker, at least over 100 tackles for the season.

Getting my teammates to district, going to the playoffs and getting past the second round.

I wouldn’t say so much personally. It’s more about team. The No. 1 goal is to improve every day. No. 2, we certainly want to win the opener. And the district opener. Then get in the playoffs and a win a district title. I don’t know anybody that comes out here to work and not have those goals in mind.

For the team, I would really like to get another district championship together and hopefully make it further in the playoffs than we did this past year. Overall, we just want to have a winning season, that’s our main goal. Have a winning season, get a district championship and make it further in the playoffs than we did last year.

My goals are to work as a team, all of us as one. And to really step up as a leader and commit to giving it my all as it’s my senior year.

Our team goals are to make the playoffs next year in our district, be the district champs and then try to go as far as we can in the playoffs. Ultimate goal is to win a state championship, but those are the three goals we’ve set as a team. Personally those are my goals, working to achieve those goals with the La Feria Lions.

Yes, we have set 10-0, that’s a sure thing, we also want to get a district title outright, make sure there’s no co-district stuff, and also we want to go three rounds deep in the playoffs.

> Are you more nervous, excited or confident when a game gets under way?

I’m excited and I’m really confident.

I’d say a little bit of both nervous and excited together. A little goosebumps, but it’s a good feeling, though.

I think it’s more, I want to say confident, but it’s time to remain calm. I tell myself you have to stay calm because you have to be objective when you make decisions.

I’m pretty nervous before a game, like, I’ll get those butterflies in my stomach. As the game goes on, my confidence will go up and I’ll get more comfortable as I get into my own little routine.

I’m very excited because you never know what’s going to happen. We have our ups, they have their ups, but we can always come back and play again. You never know when something’s going to happen. Whatever happens, happens.

A combination of excited and confident. The nerves are before the game. But once the game gets going I’m more confident and excited about the opportunity that is in front of us to be successful that night, and that’s how I feel.

I feel confident in anything, I’m excited. My junior or sophomore season I would take the lead from my captains. But coming into this season, it’s my time, I’m a senior, I’m looking to step up as a leader and take that role.

> Describe your best moment playing/ coaching football so far.

Just when we were going undefeated and seeing everybody’s faces and how happy they were and how much all of the hard work has paid off and how we got a tradition started.

My first playoff game last year against Laredo Alexander. It was very exciting for me, nervewracking.

It would have to be coaching my three younger brothers.

I guess the best moment for me would be after we won our playoff game in the first round. That feeling was amazing. Like, the whole team put in work one way or another, and to come out with a victory in the end was really great. That, absolutely, was the best moment.

My best moment playing football, it was a pass to somebody from Hanna, a receiver. People were struggling to take him down and I just come out of nowhere and just pop him out of the field.

There’s so many. I’ve (got) so many great moments it would be very hard for me to pick just one. But I guess, you know, in 2004 when we beat Donna when they were ranked No. 1 in bi-district. We were a young, upstart Economedes team, first year in the playoffs, and we were able to defeat Donna at home.

The best one would have to be the bi-district game against Corpus Christi Ray when we were down 14-0 and we came back in the second half and scored 21 unanswered points and won that game and were going to the second round. We kept fighting, fighting and fighting and it all came together.

> How far is too far when it comes to celebrating on the field after a big play?

Too much would be trying to rub it in the other team’s face. Just stay with your team and move on. Then you can talk about it after the game.

I’d say too far is when you get a penalty.

When you start making fun of the other team or poking at the other team, that’s too far. Certainly I like them to celebrate. But (former Notre Dame coach) Lou Holtz said it best: Act like you’ve been there before.

I think too far is when you’re talking trash to the other team. I mean, yeah, it’s OK to feel pride in what you just did, but, like, showboating is unnecessary. It’s kind of childish, in a way.

Too far is, like, going and shoving it in the opposition’s face. You just want them to stay calm, because, yeah, you had one big play but, like, they’re going to have a big play and it leads to other things out there on the field.

You want to get excited, you want to celebrate with your teammates but too far would be when you start bringing attention to yourself as a player by either looking up in the stands, spiking the ball, taking off your helmet, you know, and bringing all the attention towards yourself.

As far as celebrating, here at East we really don't like to celebrate too much on the field. We're just there to line up, pretty much get the job done, and all the celebrating's after the game.

> What do you think of the NFL lockout?

There’s going to be some hatred toward not having the NFL if there isn’t any, but for the younger kids, enjoy playing football while you can.

I really do not want an NFL lockout. It’ll take away from me watching it and learning from my elders in the NFL.

It just disgusts me. It just shows the greed of man, how greedy we’ve become. Owners making billions of dollars and players making millions of dollars and they’re not satisfied. It just really shows where society is now.

I don’t really think much of it. I don’t really pay attention to it. All I can say is, I guess the players have a right to fight for what they want and what they think they deserve, so that’s kind of how I feel about that.

The NFL lockout, I really think a lot because, really, my inspiration was from the NFL. I saw probably some of the greatest play in the NFL, and I really look up to them. Hopefully one day I get to play in the NFL.

I don’t like it. I’m hoping it’s something that can be solved by the end of the week. I feel like the NFL lockout right now is just something that could be, in my opinion, already taken care of.

I'm pretty sure the owners and the players will work something out. The thing is, I kind of like college ball more because the players play for love and pride of their school, and in the NFL right now they just play for money.

TIGERS’ PEREZ MAKES IMMEDIATE IMPACT

would be ahead of the opposition by studying film and reading all the scouting reports. Meanwhile, Geraldo plays the game on instinct. The one similarity is both are heavy-duty hitters. “Let me put it this way, anybody that gets hit from either one of them is in trouble,” Uribe said. And the great news for Mercedes fans is they’ll get to see two more years of Geraldo Perez.

MIKE GONZALEZ | RGVSports.com MERCEDES — When Mercedes coach Michael Uribe lost three linebackers from the 2009 squad, he had to do some hard thinking and head scratching over who would fill in those vacant spots. He went ahead and comfortably plugged Jesse Vega and Alan Escobedo into two spots. Vega gained enough experience as a backup during the Class 4A playoffs while Escobedo was a solid contributor to the junior varsity squad. For the third spot, Uribe turned to Geraldo Perez, an incoming sophomore with no varsity or JV experience. But Uribe had a strong hunch about this one. Perez made a strong enough impression during spring ball during his freshman year that he and defensive coordinator Roger Perez felt he could help the varsity at strongside linebacker, also known as the “Sam.” They thought his speed and quickness was more than enough to play against any style of offense where he could be a run stopper or pass defender. The choice turned out to be a good one as Perez ended last season as the team’s leading tackler. He also earned a spot on the all-district team. “His abilities spoke for themselves,” Uribe said. “As a freshman he was one of top athletes in his class, and we had voids from the year before. We were always aware of him.” And maybe his name was already a big boost to his success. Perez is the younger brother of Lupe Perez, who was a two-year standout at middle linebacker when Uribe was a defensive coordinator for the Tigers. So naturally there came comparisons. Geraldo does his best not paying too much attention when time and time again he heard talk about his brother’s play. “I try to do as much as I can and not go out of my way to do better than my brother,” Geraldo said. “I try to do my own thing instead of being like my brother.” The two have their similarities and each show some differences. Uribe said as a MLB, Lupe

RATTLERS’ RODRIGUEZ LOOKING TO BUILD ON ’10 PETER RASMUSSEN | RGVSports.com

Delcia Lopez | RGVSports.com

MISSION — In his first season playing in the secondary, Sharyland Rattlers senior Jacob Rodriguez exceeded expectations. The Rattlers coaches expected Rodriguez to do well as a defensive back but he finished with a season that was recognized beyond the Rio Grande Valley. He recorded five interceptions in 2010 and was named to the All-State third defensive team. He also garnered All-Valley and All-District 30-5A first team honors. Only a year earlier, Rodriguez was playing quarterback for the Sharyland junior varsity team. Sharyland secondary coach Tom Lee said the transition for Rodriguez was an easy one. “He was just kind of a natural,” Lee said. “He is one of those guys that are not the fastest guys in the world but he just finds a way to make plays and finds a way to get to the ball.” Rodriguez said he was somewhat surprised at his success. His goal was just to achieve all-district honors. “I was shocked at how well I did,” Rodriguez said, adding that he did not work as hard on his skills as he should have the summer before last season. “If I would have worked out more than I did, I probably would have done better.” Rodriguez is used to transitions and making it work. When he was in eighth grade his mom was transferred to the Valley for work from Nacogdoches. He admits he didn’t want to make the move because it would mean that he would have to start all over with new friends. “It took me time to adjust,” Rodriguez said. “It was hard. I didn’t know anybody. (But) I’m a real outgoing person so I got along with people.” With success comes the expectation to do better. Speaking of which, he wants to double his interception total in 2011. “I enjoy pressure,” Rodriguez said. “I know this year there is a little bit more pressure to do better than I did last year.”

MACIAS OUT TO MAKE MOST OF SENIOR YEAR TODD ORODENKER | RGVSports.com

Paul Chouy | RGVSports.com

Quicker, stronger, faster. Those were the first three words that came to Brownsville Pace coach Rene Medrano’s mind when asked to describe Miguel Macias. Now the starting inside linebacker for a Vikings team that is looking to make the playoffs for the fifth straight season, Macias is set to man the middle of the field a season after playing on the defensive line. But to him, football is football. It doesn’t matter where he’s playing. “I just like hitting people,” Macias said. “I don’t get tired of it.” However, there is a difference in playing linebacker and playing up front. And it all starts with having more responsibility. “You’ve got to lead the team,” Macias said. “You’re the leader of the defense, it’s your job to know what everyone else has to do.” And even with that responsibility, there’s still the different side of Macias: the wild one. “I’m the crazy one on the field,” Macias said. “I’m aggressive, you can say I’m aggressive. I enjoy hitting people.” So when Macias is hanging out with his friends, it’s not much of a surprise that he’s the one who gets all the laughs. “I’m crazy,” Macias said. “I’m always doing dumb stuff, I’m like the clown of my friends.” Still, there is a serious side to the Pace senior. Last year he had 55 tackles and a sack. And this year, he hopes to get those numbers even higher. And that preparation all starts in the weight room. “I try to (work out) every day,” Macias said. “Even when I’m not here (at Pace), I work out at home. I try to stay in shape.” That commitment and determination that Macias has to his body and skill doesn’t just stop on Friday nights. In fact, that’s where it comes out the most. “I try to be focused,” Macias said. “It’s like that moment, you focus on what you have to do and just try to do it right.” And now that his final year is here, that it’s all almost over, that it’s all coming to an end, now is the time for the best of Macias to come out. “Just have fun, senior year,” Macias said. “Trying to get a scholarship, that’s possible.”

AUGUST 1, 2008 FALL 2010

Richardson overcame adversity to succeed Former Edinburg Economedes running back ran from early troubled home life to stardom on the field. yan Richardson had every reason to take the wrong path. Playing sports allowed him to stay straight and shielded him from a hard upbringing. His father was a crack addict. His parents have both been incarcerated. It wasn’t exactly an ideal family situation for Richardson, the former Edinburg Economedes football star, who grew up in Oklahoma and moved to Edinburg when he was in sixth grade. “I’ve always been a determined kid,” said Richardson, a 2005 graduate who is now 25 years old. “Sports was my escape. I stayed out late and played. I didn’t want to go back home.” When Richardson settled in Edinburg, he and his three brothers were fortunate enough to find a foster family that kept them all together. It gave them a chance to enjoy a semblance of a stable family environment. It may have saved him, too. “The Hispanic culture is very family-oriented,” Richardson said. “(Former Economedes coach) Oscar Salinas is a very family-oriented person. He’s always been there for me.” Moving to the Valley allowed Richardson to blossom as an athlete. He shined brightest on the football field. He played as a freshman on Edinburg High’s varsity team. That offseason, his foster family’s residence was rezoned to Economedes. That’s where Richardson plied his trade for the next three seasons. That led to a memorable senior season in 2004 when he earned second-team all-state honors after rushing for 1,887 yards and 30 touchdowns in nine games. He rushed for a then-Valley record 398 yards in a game against Weslaco that season. Most importantly, he

led the Jaguars to what has been their only playoff appearance. From there, Richardson played three years at Texas A&M-Kingsville. His college career was cut short in 2007 when he decided to leave the team to help care for his newborn son, Kiandre, who suffered from pulmonary problems following his birth. Each day for a month, Richardson commuted from the Valley before reaching that decision. It wasn’t easy. “I could run a 4.33 in the 40 and I was developing into a pro prospect,” Richardson said. “I was thinking, ‘Do I focus on my family? Do I do the selfish thing and stay there?’ I stuck with my family, of course.” Richardson tried to forge a pro career in arena football with the Rio Grande Valley Dorados. Most recently, he played with the Magic, the Valley’s indoor team that recently finished its first season. In the meantime, he established an athletic training business which he still runs. He’s pursuing a master’s degree in exercise science in an online program through the University of Houston. His business — Elite Sports Performance — has grown from 15 to 350 kids. Oddly enough, most of the athletes he trains are volleyball players. His business also has a club volleyball team that he coaches. His experience with the Magic was enough to drive him away from football. He said the team was poorly organized and he wanted nothing to do with it anymore. He’s content with where he’s at in his life. “I’m forever thankful for everything,” Richardson said.

Going into the new season, Villanueva is hoping to duplicate or exceed last season’s accomplishments.

Xerxes, she decided to name me Aries. As a football player, what do you think of the NFL lockout? I think they should let the players play. Football’s become more popular around the world. The teams and players would lose a lot of money and other things they’ve worked hard for (if it continues).

Your first name is pretty unique. What’s the story behind it? I was born in San Marcos and my mom didn’t know what to name me. She was reading the newspaper the following morning and saw her horoscope. Since I have a brother named

What’s the best thing about playing high school football? The best thing is getting out of the house and meeting different people. In our district, we get to travel to the Corpus area and we get to meet different people. But at the same time we’re playing with guys we’ve grown up with.

VASQUEZ, HAWKS LOOK FOR BETTER RESULTS IN 2011 ELADIO JAIMEZ | RGVSports.com

Jesse Mendoza | RGVSports.com

HARLINGEN — Christian Vasquez was born to be a star. Whether on the football field or as a model. The Harlingen South defensive end will enter his senior season as a defender for the Hawks. Vasquez transferred to South from across town at Harlingen High after his sophomore year. Last year, Vasquez and the Hawks endured a one-win season while the Cardinals were undefeated in the regular season and finished 12-1 for the second straight season. Still Vasquez won’t dwell on the past. He’s excited about the future of the Hawks football program and his own prospects after high school. “Even when we were losing, the team had a lot of heart,” Vasquez said. “We took the field every week and we played every game like everyone else.” Last year’s lone win for the Hawks came in Week Nine and snapped a 21-game losing streak that dated back to the 2008 season. At some point during the season, playoff expectations went out the window. Vasquez said the Hawks never stopped playing though. “We just tried keeping up with the better teams,” Vasquez said. “We just tried to see if we could keep up with some of those teams. We still tried to have as much fun as possible.” Through it all, Vasquez remained optimistic and positive. As the 2011 season nears, Vasquez is more excited than ever to get back on the field. “We’ll have some new faces but they’re all going to bring something new to the table,” Vasquez said. But it’s not all about football for this rising star. After high school, Vasquez said he’d like to pursue a career in modeling. “I’ve always been photogenic,” Vasquez said. “I love being in front of a camera. I just think it’d be something fun to do after high school and see where it leads me.”

Villegas hopes to lead Eagles back to playoffs PETER RASMUSSEN | RGVSports.com

What does it mean for you to be a Mission High player? It means a lot. This is where I’m from. Everyone from my family came here. I want to do good for the school. There is a lot of tradition here. What is the best

thing about playing football? It helps me take out all my anger on the field. It is a good way to release my anger especially when I’m fighting with my brother. Why are you fighting with your brother? It’s just brotherly love. What is the funniest thing you’ve seen on the football field? After we won a game, all the players ran onto the field and one of my teammates just tripped out of nowhere. That was pretty funny.

Joel Martinez | RGVSports.com

Derek Villegas will be one of the top returning linebackers in District 30-5A this season. The 5-foot-10, 195-pound Mission High senior already has two years of varsity experience under his belt and finished with 110 tackles last season. Last year the Eagles finished 4-6 in their first season returning to the Class 5A ranks. That did not sit well with Villegas, who hopes to help the tradition-rich Eagles reach the playoffs.

How much has not making the playoffs last season motivated you guys for this year? It motivates us a lot. We want to be the best we can. I want to be just like when my brother played two years ago and go to the area round. We lost last year but we want to get back to that.

Rodriguez brings big presence for Falcons TODD ORODENKER | RGVSports.com

Standing at 6-foot-6, 260 pounds, Christian Rodriguez can’t exactly hide anywhere on the football field. Or anywhere else, for that matter. The Los Fresnos tackle is heading into his senior year and is in position to get a Division I scholarship. But that’s not for another year. Right now, he just wants to help restore the glory to a proud Falcons program. You played at Port Isabel for two years before moving to Los Fresnos last year. What was that like? They said it was going to be a big change because of 5A. I had a strong position, it wasn’t that hard. I was playing ball, that’s what I’m used to. Do you ever think about playing at the next level? Playing college football? Not really. I wanted to go to college. My mom’s put that in me, but football just opened a whole new door.

Brad Doherty| RGVSports.com

Away from the field you’re laid back, but on the field, that’s got to be different, right? It comes out. In class, in school, around people, I don’t really talk. On the field, it’s something else. What’s your favorite thing to do on the field? I get a kick out of the pancakes, you just keep going and boom, you’re on top of them. Does it bother you that as a lineman you don’t get a whole lot of attention? It doesn’t faze me. I know I’m blocking for my teammates. … I love doing what I do. What do you like doing away from the field? Not football. I love hanging out with my brothers. I love hanging out with my mom. Going to movies with friends. What kind of role has your mom played in your life? She makes sure I am where I have to be. She’s the (best), she’s what I want to be. Without her I don’t know where I’d be. Has it hit you that this is going to be your last season? It’ll start when (the) graduation walk comes. Right now, I take life as it comes. When I walk across that stage and get my diploma, it’ll hit hard. 40

But there are ways around that, as Castillo shows. “One thing I always have in my mind is that, no matter how much I suffer, Jesus suffered more when he was getting crucified, Castillo said. “No pain can compare to what he went through. I can endure. That’s what I was brought up with. Castillo has been living that lesson for a while, long before he was a Bears linebacker. When Castillo was in fifth grade, he was playing running back for Austin Middle School. On one play early in the season, he broke his left arm but pled with his dad and coach to keep him in the game. Though impressed with his son’s gumption, Jesus Castillo took him out. “I told him he’s got to wait until it gets better, Jesus Castillo said. Despite the injury, which Jesus Castillo described as breaking the arm “in two pieces, his son returned for the final two games of the season while playing with a cast. “He loves the game. He loves every aspect of the game, Jesus Castillo said. “Spring training, he likes working out, he likes to be ready for everything. See CASTILLO ON PAGE 44 42

A desire to hit is somewhat useless if the player doesn’t know where he’s going. That doesn’t seem like a problem for Castillo, who gets A’s and B’s in the classroom. Those smarts are important before the snap as well, since it’s Castillo’s role to call defenses for the Bears. “It’s a challenge. I like those challenges every day,” Castillo said. “Leading the defense out there every Friday night. It feels good knowing that you could talk to other players.” Castillo does that, even if he’s a tad soft-spoken when you first approach him. But Rios warned that’s not the real Castillo, that when the game starts and it’s time to be heard, he is loudly living up to the expectations Rios has for Bears linebackers. “He’s got to be aggressive. He’s not afraid to take chances. The type of kid that does what you ask him to do but then there’s coaching and then there’s instinct,” Rios said of an ideal Bears linebacker. “He’s going to take those chances, even when coach told him not to. That’s the type of kid that he is.” Sounds kind of like another Bears linebacker. 44

RGVSPORTS.COM FALL 2011

Ideas to make cross country stand out makes cross country such an overlooked sport is the fact that it simply isn’t spectator friendly. First off, meets are almost always held early Saturday mornings. Since Friday nights in the fall are usually reserved for football games, getting up early on Saturdays is not something most high school sports fans have a desire to do. Furthermore, the sport itself is difficult for fans to follow. About the only thing a spectator can do is watch athletes start the race then wait for them to finish. It’s not like fans can follow cross country athletes during an

entire race. Although, honestly, why would anyone want to watch someone run an extended distance? It’s like watching grass grow. Still, cross country athletes deserve to feel like the rock stars they are. They deserve to hear the roar of the crowd and to compete in front of more than just a few parents and wellwishers. But how can this happen? For one thing, meets should be scheduled during the evenings and not just on Saturdays. Why not run a few meets on Wednesday nights when there is no football or volleyball on the schedule? Also, meet organizers

need to find a way to allow spectators to watch the action throughout the course. Maybe set up small stands at various spots along the way and not just at the start/finish line. This way fans can become more connected with the athletes. Finally, schools need to generate more support for cross country at a grassroots level. Maybe hold citywide pep rallies for the cross country team and find supporters who are willing to form booster clubs to help raise awareness of the sport. Cross country will obviously never replace other fall sports in popularity, but it needs to be given a chance to shine so that its athletes can, too.

Alex Jones | RGVSports.com

As the 2011-12 high school sports season gets under way, there’s essentially two fall sports: football and everything else. Volleyball receives its fair share of attention, but there is one fall sport that is practically ignored and whose athletes > DAVID dwell in almost FAVILA complete anonymity. I’m talking about cross country. Don’t get me wrong, I have a great deal of respect for cross country athletes. Anyone who can run two to three miles is amazing to me. However, what

Talacon, Golden Eagles looking to take flight TODD ORODENKER | RGVSports.com

Whether in Mexico or the Rio Grande Valley, football has always been a part of Javier Talacon’s life. Coming over from Matamoros shortly before his freshman year at Brownsville Hanna, Talacon quickly adapted to the different culture and different language. And football played a big role in that. Working his way up to the varsity team last year, Talacon played a significant role for a Golden Eagles team that fell on hard times after winning district in 2009. But now, with a strong junior varsity team coming up, 2011 could be a different story. Why did you and your family decide to come over to America? My parents didn’t like how it was in Matamoros. Safety for the kids, for my family. Did you have problems understanding the language? I was super lost when I come over here. Because of this team, I picked it up.

Paul Chouy | RGVSports.com

What got you into football? All my uncles from my dad’s family, they play football. So I got the idea of football, not soccer. So it was football, (just) football. What are you like on the field? Everything I have inside gets out when I hit people. I was super-hyper active. The football made me settle down a little bit. Do you model your game after anyone? I don’t want to be like (anyone), it’s not what I like. I just like being myself. What do you like doing in your spare time? Stay with the family. Do things with the family, do things together, be with my girlfriend. What do you like watching on TV? “Phineas and Ferb.” I watch it with my little sister. But I like “House,” medical stuff.

'JACKETS ARE BACK TOSCANO, E-E ENJOYING REBIRTH BRIAN SANDALOW | RGVSports.com

RGVSPORTS.COM THE MAGAZINE

Joel Martinez | RGVSports.com

The Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets are supposed to have a swagger. Their tradition and expectations demand it. But heading into 2010, the ‘Jackets’ swagger was gone after a 4-6 season in 2009 snapped their streak of six district titles. There were questions about the program and whether it would soon recover. Thanks to Alonzo Toscano, among others, it did. And now he wants more after an 8-4 season that saw E-E advance to the second round of the playoffs. “This coming season I’ve got a good feeling that we’ve got a district title coming back to EdcouchElsa,” Toscano said. To do that, E-E will likely need Toscano to replicate what he did last season. Coming into 2010, Toscano was expected to be one of District 32-4A’s better running backs. What wasn’t expected was his emergence as one of the Valley’s best all-around players, as he was responsible for 850 yards and 12 rushing TDs while becoming one of the ’Jackets’ top defensive backs. But there’s still something he hasn’t accomplished, something that defines an Edcouch-Elsa football player’s career. It’s something Toscano wants badly but hasn’t achieved yet. “It would be a terrible feeling (not to win a district title),”Toscano said. “It would probably bring me down for a while.” That would also hurt Toscano and the ’Jackets’ swagger, which, for the first time since the end of the 2008 season, is back at E-E. It’s something Toscano, who was not a part of that ’08 team, values. “Without any confidence we’re not going anywhere,” Toscano said. “We’ve got to come out with a positive attitude and we’ve got to come out like… I actually want to be the underdog. Being the underdog helps us out. Nobody respects us yet so we’ve got to come out and prove everybody wrong.” OK, maybe the E-E swagger has changed a little bit.

Silva is the rock on Tarpons’ offensive line ARMANDO GARZA | RGVSports.com

Aureliano (Audi) Silva has been a Port Isabel Tarpon for quite a while. At 5-foot-9, 245 pounds, Silva is entering his third straight season as Port Isabel’s left tackle and is a cornerstone of the Tarpons’ line. During his time at Port Isabel, Silva has experienced the lowest of lows and the highest of highs. Now, Silva hopes to be a part of something special. Just how little glory do linemen really get? (Laughs) Well, we really don’t get any glory. We just do the dirty work. The running backs get all the glory and the touchdowns. So then what makes you happy on the field if you don’t get a lot of recognition? Oh man, seeing your running back going 48

for a touchdown after you just pancakeblocked somebody is the best feeling in the world. What does it mean to play for the Port Isabel Tarpons? It’s all about pride here in PI. It’s tradition. If you’re a Tarpon, you’ve gotta play with heart. Bringing this town back to life (with last season’s co-championship)

after winning games was an exciting feeling. After two straight seasons of missing the playoffs, the Tarpons returned to the postseason last season. How important was that? It took a lot of weight off our shoulders to win district (with Rio Hondo). To see the town come back and fill the stands again was special. Now we want to keep it going and go further.

Martinez, Bobcats ready to take next step ELADIO JAIMEZ | RGVSports.com

Joel Martinez| RGVSports.com

Senior Sal Martinez will do just about anything he can to help the Edinburg High Bobcats win. Last year, the cornerback was a mainstay as the Bobcats finished as District 31-5A runner-up and went three rounds deep into the postseason. Martinez, who as a freshman was playing on the ‘B’ team, finished last season with eight interceptions, returning three for touchdowns. He also served as the Bobcats’ kick returner, scoring three more times. Martinez earned Class 5A all-state honorable mention, first-team Valley Freedom Newspapers All-Valley, first-team all-District 31-5A and Edinburg High defensive player of the year. Martinez, a senior this season, recently caught up with RGVSports.com The Magazine to talk football. After going through some tough years, including a 0-10 season not too far back, what have the last couple of years been like at Edinburg? It’s been really good. Everyone’s been working well together and I think that was the biggest difference. We worked and played like a team and that led to success. A lot of people say that District 315A is the toughest in South Texas, do you agree? I strongly agree with that statement. There are a lot of strong and very talented teams in this district. You never know what’s going to happen on any given Friday. You’re going to be a senior. What are you looking forward to most? I want a repeat of what happened last year if not better. As a team, I’d like for us to go three-deep if not further. Individually, I’d like to get first-team all-state. Bobcat tradition is pretty strong and unique. Describe what it’s like being a Bobcat. It’s all about pride. I think that’s been the key to our success, is the pride and tradition. Every year, everyone wants to beat us and that’s an honor.

COWBOYS' VELEZ LOOKING FOR MORE IN '11 TODD ORODENKER | RGVSports.com

Paul Chouy| RGVSports.com

Carlos Velez was a key part of Brownsville Porter’s third-ranked defense in District 32-5A last season. And this year, the senior figures to be an even bigger part of a team and a defense that is hoping to improve on its three-win campaign of 2010. Previously behind players like Josh Vallejo and Jovan Quiroz, Velez is now front and center for the Porter defense. He’s the one teams are going to gameplan around and he’s the guy opposing players are going to mark on the field. This year, there is no hiding. When did you start really taking football seriously? Soon as I got to seventh grade, I started liking it. My dad (Enrique Velez) pushed me toward it. He really got me into a mental toughness. How do you keep your focus when playing? Once I’m on the field, I do the right thing. Nothing matters but hitting the guy with the ball. You’ve played both linebacker and defensive lineman. Which do you like better? I think middle linebacker is a little more challenging. It’s more responsibility. It’s way more responsibility. I have to (make) the calls … It’s just a matter of practice. How do you think Porter is going to do this year? Hopefully make the playoffs. And be district champions. We’re working, we’re working really hard. We’re going to push it. We all want it this year. We’re coming after it. Do you have a favorite moment from your time with the Cowboys? My sophomore year, coming out there against Weslaco (High), I broke two wedges and provoked a hit that caused momentum in the game to shift. It was the only game we won that year.

Garcia takes on big role for Coyotes PETER RASMUSSEN | RGVSports.com

The La Joya High Coyotes have missed the playoffs the last three years but with seniors like Isiah Garcia they hope 2011 brings a postseason return. Garcia, an offensive tackle, is one of the captains of the team. He takes his role as a captain seriously and is proud to say he protects the team’s quarterback. This will be the first year he starts as a left tackle, which he is looking forward to. What is the best thing about playing football? The best thing about playing football is that you get to hit people. That is where I get to take out all my anger. What has been the strangest thing to happen inside the huddle? Hut. The quarterback yelled hut while we were in the huddle. We just started moving everywhere. What is your favorite sports movie? That would have to be “Facing the Giants.” It’s a Christian movie, and I just like those kinds of movies.

Nathan Lambrecht | RGVSports.com

La Joya is a pretty small town. What is one thing people should know about La Joya? For being a small town, we are one of the strongest in the Valley. If you could be in a music video, what would it be? I would say Casting Crowns because I’m a big fan of Christian music. They are a Christian band.

HARD WORK PAYS OFF FOR

REDSKINS’ LOPEZ MIKE GONZALEZ | RGVSports.com

Gabe Hernandez | RGVSports.com

DONNA — Johnathon Lopez doesn’t have to flex his muscles in order for his veins to pop out freakishly. Lopez’ muscles are developed in such a way that keeps his veins clearly visible, even when his arms are in a relaxed state. “It’s naturally like that ever since I started working out,” he said. “I feel like with the shoulder pads, I can be scary to opposing teams.” At strong safety, Lopez loves to hit and cover receivers down the field. But his heart belongs in the weight room. It would be tough to find someone his size who works as hard at lifting weights or who has as much passion for it. Lopez has not missed a single workout as a football player since middle school. The senior hits the weights twice a day, five days a week in the offseason. His dedication has rewarded him with the starting spot at strong safety in which he’s held since his sophomore year. “Our coaches would tell us to show up, work hard and get bigger for next season,” Lopez said. Since the age of 10, Lopez has done pushups and sit ups in his bedroom and worked outside on his pull-ups using the clothesline post. It took time to reach his goal of 100 pull-ups, but after he did, Lopez found himself doing as many as 175 straight. “Since I was a kid, I liked getting bigger,” he said. “I would watch the NFL players and see how strong they were.” Even though Lopez was promised a starting position, that never stopped him from getting stronger and faster this past offseason. Lopez managed to upgrade his bench to 230 pounds while his squat is now at 415. Heading into his third season as a starter, Lopez is ready for a strong football season. “My strength has helped me at strong safety,” he said. “I have to be big in order to be making tackles and get interceptions in a ball game.”

Madrigal set to take over QB reins for Panthers Carlos Madrigal will be the new starting quarterback for defending District 32-5A champion Weslaco High. The senior is anxious to get an opportunity to be the new signal caller and one of the team captains for the Panthers. He feels lucky to be playing in one of the most attractive stadiums in South Texas while he also wished he could have a shot of facing arch-rival Donna or begin a city rivalry with Weslaco East. Do you feel you play in the coolest football stadium in South Texas? Oh yeah, honestly looking at it, wow! Bobby Lackey Stadium has everything from synthetic artificial

turf, state of the art press box, a jumbotron scoreboard and it can seat over 13,000 fans. If you had the funds, what would you add to it? When they first started talking about adding the press box, they also talked about adding a horseshoe (like seating around the stadium) and it would’ve been a lot louder. If I had the funds, I would do that. People would think we’d have a college stadium. You play in an offense (Slot-T) where you throw the ball no more than five times in an average game. Are you OK with that? Honestly, I’m hoping to push it to 1215 throws. I’ll run a lot like a running back in a quarterback position.

Marriott among top returners for Mustangs PETER RASMUSSEN | RGVSports.com

On paper, the McAllen Memorial Mustangs should have the best defense in District 30-5A in 2011. Last season, the Mustangs were the top defensive team in the league and advanced three rounds deep in the playoffs. The Mustangs return a slew of starters from last season’s defense, including outside linebacker Tyler Marriott. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior finished with 108 tackles last season. Marriott has been playing football since the third grade and hopes to finish his high school career with a district championship. What social media do you prefer? Facebook. I have a lot more friends on Facebook to interact with. What is your favorite thing about summer vacation? Getting out of school, working on my own stuff and hanging out with my friends.

Gabe Hernandez| RGVSports.com

If you can be in any sports movie, what would it be? “Friday Night Lights” What are you looking forward to the most about your senior year? Working hard and trying to get a district title and making the playoffs. What does it mean to you to be a McAllen Memorial football player? It means a lot. I don’t know how to answer that. It just means a lot. Do you have a special connection to your jersey number (40)? No, I don’t. They just gave it to me when I came up to varsity. That was one of the few numbers left that I could pick from so I just picked it. It has been with me ever since. Did you want another number? A number is not important to me. If you could be in a reality TV show, what show would it be? “Survivor."

Villarreal set to lead Falcons to new heights DAVID HINOJOSA | RGVSports.com

Los Fresnos senior Gloriana Villarreal has kept a busy schedule preparing for the upcoming volleyball season playing in numerous camps and summer leagues. With Villarreal as the team’s go-to hitter entering her fourth season of varsity play, the Lady Falcons should be set up for another successful season. What is the most exciting part about this volleyball season for you? I feel very fortunate to have been able to play varsity volleyball as a starter since my freshman year. The team leaders in the past have helped to shape me to be the player I am today. Now, as a senior, I look forward to helping my team get to and advance in the playoffs.

Yvette Vela | RGVSports.com

Los Fresnos has had a strong program over the last few years, why do you think that is? Besides our head coaches, Becky Woods and Dolores Olguin, I give a lot of credit to our team’s volleyball club coaches, Jesse Lopez and Marisa Rios of South Texas Juniors Volleyball Club. They have helped develop our team skills to advance in this sport. How do you envision your role on the team to be this year? This year’s team has been very dedicated to getting stronger and improving their skills for the upcoming season. My goal is to play at my highest level because this will be my last year in high school. Play hard with no regrets. What is the best part about playing volleyball? Volleyball has been a passion for me since I was 6 years old. My dream has always been to play at a college level and compete well. Who has influenced you the most? The biggest influences since I was a little girl have been Elizabeth Avelar-Guerra (her aunt and head coach at Brownsville Rivera) and my mother, Linda Villarreal. They both would take me to practices and camps every summer. They made the sport fun for me and it helped keep me in shape.

Jimenez out to help Lady Pats defend 32-4A crown DAVID HINOJOSA | RGVSports.com District 32-4A’s offensive player of the year. Most of the starters from the 2010 team have graduated, leaving a big challenge for the Lady Patriots. What kind of challenges does your team have this year? We are working on coming together as a team. The only thing we’re lacking is confidence, and that’s something our coach is teaching us. We have some strong people coming up. We are not looking to be a weak team. We are going to do what we need to do to get that district title.

What is it like to have a rival like Edcouch-Elsa? It’s the most exciting game of the year, actually. It’s the best competition for us so it’s a hard game, but that’s what we look forward to and that’s what we practice for. Do you want to take volleyball to the next level? What things are you doing to get you there? I’ve played volleyball for as long as I can remember, and I’ve played year-round for six years. The plan is to play in college, hopefully, and continue my education playing volleyball.

HERRERA LEADS

IN A POSITIVE WAY FOR LADY HAWKS DAVID HINOJOSA | RGVSports.com Focused looks can take various forms — intensity, scowls or maybe even poker faces. So, how does Sydney Herrera look when she’s focused? She smiles. “Some people need to be mad or angry to get focused,” said Herrera, a senior middle blocker for Harlingen South. “That doesn’t work for me. I need to be smiling and laughing. That helps me get focused. If I’m too quiet, then you know something’s wrong.” Herrera hopes to be all smiles this coming season. It could be a challenge this season because the Lady Hawks face several obstacles. Herrera is one of only four returning letterwinners from last season. But, that’s just part of it. The Lady Hawks will usher in a new era when longtime assistant Lupe Garza takes over for now-re-

HERRERA FROM PAGE 62 tired head coach Steve Lunsford. Herrera figures to factor heavily into helping the Lady Hawks make that transition. “She is going to play an important role and she’s going to be an important leader,” Garza said. “I have high expectations for her and I know she has high expectations for herself.” And Herrera plans to do this with an approach that reflects her outgoing personality. “I want everyone to have a good time,” Herrera said. “I want everyone to be excited to want to come to practice. I want everyone to be excited to want to play in the games.” Herrera has the credentials to be the leader the Lady Hawks need her to be. Herrera was named District 31-5A’s defensive player of the year. She switched out with last year’s district MVP Liz Ramee in the middle. Herrera credits Ramee and the 11 players that graduated from last year’s team to help her get ready for 2011. Herrera also credits former McAllen Rowe stars Brittanie Best and LaKeisha Allen for her preparation. Best, Allen and the rest of the Lady Warriors sent the Lady Hawks reeling in the area round last year after Rowe fought back from a two-game deficit to win a five-game thriller on Harlingen South’s home court. “It was a heartbreaker,” Herrera said of the loss to Rowe. “It’s still there; it still hits me in the head. Britt and Keisha are great athletes and I thank them because they have helped push me. We don’t ever want to have that feeling again.” That was a low point. If Herrera wants anything this season, she wants it to be all smiles. “I’m very approachable on the court,” Herrera said, “and I’m smiling all the time because I love to play volleyball. It’s relieves all the stress. It’s just me and volleyball. I believe in having a good time, and I hope the girls have a good time. That’s all I want.”

Cougars' Garza Jr. running to win JESSICA ENCINIA | Special to RGVSports.com

Javier Garza Jr. is one of the leaders for the Edinburg North boys cross country team. The senior’s goal is to help the Cougars qualify for the Region IV-5A Cross Country meet as a team and perhaps make it to state. Joel Martinez | RGVSports.com

What do you like so much about running? I like the feeling of accomplishment after a run. If I go a couple of days without running, I feel like something’s not right. Do you participate in any other sports? I used to be an all-around athlete; I played football, basketball, track, and cross country until my sophomore year. After that, I needed to choose a sport that I could focus the most on. What’s the main thing you’re looking forward to this season as a senior? As a team and individually, I would like for us to go to regionals, get district champs, and qualify for state. Last year we were four points down but still (finished) fourth, so we would like to redeem ourselves to take it to the next level. Is there anyone in particular who inspires you? My dad, he’s like my coach psychologically. Whatever he does, I always try to follow it. What do you do to prepare for a meet or a race? Training. Mainly distance, I push myself on my runs and I try to go hard. At practice I feel like I have to race and I push my body until I can’t go anymore. The day before any race I get to rest. What has been one of your greatest accomplishments? Freshman year I did really well, in both cross country and track. The summer going into my sophomore year I went through a couple of injuries which had me sit out during the cross country season. I slowly recovered, with a lot of physical therapy, and I was able to make it to regionals. I feel a lot better now, once the injuries are completely done, I can do a lot better.

RGVSPORTS.COM FALL 2011

Things to watch in 2011-12 As another season of high school sports nears, we’re looking for the best stories to follow. Here’s a list of the top ones. HARLINGEN HIGH VS. ABILENE FOOTBALL: Kudos to the Cardinals for stepping up and scheduling a bona fide state power. Harlingen and > DAVID Abilene are HINOJOSA scheduled to meet on Sept. 17 at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio. Abilene won a state championship two seasons ago. Harlingen High hasn’t lost to a Valley team since 2008. The Cardinals have reeled off 24 wins in a row over Valley teams since then. A Harlingen High victory would be a watershed moment for Valley football. SONNY COMES HOME: OK, Sonny Detmer isn’t from Mission, but from 1989 to 1997, he called the Valley home. His 1990 Mission High Eagles advanced to the Class 5A state semifinals. Now the head coach at Somerset of District 27-3A, Detmer returns to Tom Landry Stadium on Aug. 27 when his team plays Mission Veterans Memorial as part of the South Texas Classic. BROWNSVILLE SOCCER: There’s no question the hub of Valley soccer stems in Brownsville. Porter advanced

to the state tournament for the third time last season. (The Cowboys won it all in Class 5A in 2006). Lopez won the 4A title in 2004. Hanna has also been to the state tournament. Will Brownsville continue that tradition? Playing host to the regional tournament doesn’t hurt. BERMEA PURSUES GOLD: Harlingen High’s Randy Bermea earned two medals at the UIL state track meet — a silver in the 110-meter hurdles and a bronze in the 300 hurdles. He returns for his senior year as the Valley’s top track athlete. Can he be the best in the state? SOFTBALL SUPREMACY: San Benito became the first Valley team to advance to softball’s Elite Eight. The Lady Greyhounds, who had three seniors last season, were swept via run rule by San Antonio O’Connor. They’ll look to make another run. Don’t discount Edinburg High, which lost to the same O’Connor team in the Sweet Sixteen. The Lady Bobcats graduated just one player and lost by a combined eight runs to O’Connor. PEREZ PURSUES VALLEY RECORD: La Joya Juarez-Lincoln’s Emily Perez became only the second Valley girls runner to break the 5-minute barrier in the 1,600-meter run last year. Her time of 4 minutes, 58.89 ranks second to only Edinburg High’s Sonia Sepulveda (4:54.58,

set in 1991). Four seconds is a lot of time to slice, but Perez is determined to catch Sepulveda. HIGH EXPECTATIONS: It’s probably unfair to heap praise on an athlete who hasn’t played a high school game yet. But when Slam magazine writes about you, that’s the exception. Jesse Pistokache, who will be a freshman at Sharyland this season, is already considered a top college recruit. Let’s see if he lives up to the hype. WHO’S NEXT?: The graduation of Brittanie Best of McAllen Rowe leaves a huge void in the Valley’s volleyball scene. Best was a gifted athlete with a magnetic personality and unbelievable will to win. Who can take her place? Well, no one. But, who will give it a shot? Look for McAllen Memorial’s Chelsea Lyons, Edinburg Economedes’ Leigha Brown or Los Fresnos’

Gloriana Villarreal to give it a go. SHARYLAND BASEBALL: Sharyland has built one of the Valley’s top baseball programs in recent years. It’s also been one of the most snake-bit. The last two years have been especially painful with dramatic one-run defeats in one-game playoffs. Both instances were considered premature exits. The Rattlers return a solid team. They just need some luck. ONE MORE CHANCE: Edinburg High’s Jessica Tamen has established herself as the Valley’s best girls golfer. Last spring, she won the Region IV-5A championship by seven strokes to qualify for state for a secondstraight season. She hasn’t fared as well at state, finishing 12th last season and 31st two years ago. She has the talent to be in medal contention. She just needs two solid rounds.
