Welcome to our new issue. We want to give a big thank you to our distributors for helping us get the magazine out to you. July was a busy month for horse equestrians. With the EVH-1 appearing to have been controlled, many events were back on calendar. With big events in almost all disciplines, it kept our staff very busy. Just when you thought it was over, the month of August and September will be just as busy. One event in particular is the Ferria Del Caballo Espanol, the largest exposition of Pure Spanish Horses in California. We are especially proud to announce that EQUESTRE has been nominated as the official magazine for this grand event. Come out and support us and the event. We hope to meet many of readers there. In this issue, we bring you coverage of a great event, Reining By The Bay. The Brumley Management Group did a fantastic job in putting this event together. Attending this event was a great experience and certainly one to look forward to for next year. For the Charreria aficionado, we bring you the battle of the Escaramuzas, at the state and regional competitions. We are sure you will take delight in the colorful and action pictures we have provided. A special thanks goes out to Andrea Kaus of Chaos Graphics; instrumental in both production and distribution, thank you Andrea. Hopefully, we will see some of our readers at upcoming events. Bienvenido a nuestra nueva edición. Queremos dar gracias a nuestros distribuidores por ayudarnos traerles la revista. Julio fue un mes muy ocupado para gente de caballo. Con el EVH-1 pareciendo bajo control, muchos eventos fueron regresaron en calendario. Fue un mes muy ocupado. Con grandes eventos en casi todas las disciplinas, se mantuvo nuestro personal muy ocupado. Justo cuando pensaba que se está terminando, el mes de agosto y septiembre serán igual de ocupados. Un evento en particular es la Feria Del Caballo Español, la mayor exposición de caballos de pura raza Español en California. Cowboy and Norco set out to celebrate it in style. After all, Norco bills itself as “Horsetown USA”. George Ingalls Equestrian Event
Center was the chosen site of the celebration. This is the third year in the observance of National Day of the Cowboy, not only in Norco, but throughout the nation. The objective is to preserve the America’s cowboy heritage. Different cities celebrate it in different manners, some celebrate it with rodeos and parades, while other share it through Western art festivals and
Norco, California, 23 de julio, 2011…Era el día nacional del cowboy americano, un día destinado a preservar el patrimonio del Cowboy estadounidense y Norco se puso a celebrar en estilo. Después de todo, Norco se anuncia como "horsetown USA". George Ingalls Equestrian Event Center fue el sitio elegido para la celebración. Este es el tercer año que se celebra el día nacional de los
cowboys, no sólo en Norco, sino en toda la nación. El objetivo es preservar el patrimonio de cowboy de los Estados Unidos. gatherings. Everyone shares in the goal to perpetuate the iconic hero, the American Cowboy. The hot Southern California sun did little to dissuade attendees as crowds were on hand to watch the festivities. Entire families were in attendance dressed in their western attire, ready to partake of a great celebration. Some people rode their horses to the event and participated in the some of the events taking place. There were also clinics being offered. For Norco, the celebration was done with a great family event that included mutton busting, roping competitions, and equestrian drill teams. There was a stagecoach giving rides to spectators. The show kicked off at noon with a parade of state flags entering the arena. Brooke Rose sang the national anthem to initiate the event. It was a great event which seems to be getting bigger with each
passing year. For the most part, it was a day for the citizens of Norco to enjoy an event on horseback in their own backyard. Hopefully, next year the event will continue to grow and draw families for wholesome time.

schedule for any horse. She performed consistently and won Reserve World Champion in 1959, 1960, and 1961. The title of World Champion continued to elude her. Every year she was hauled around to shows all over the United States on a whirlwind schedule. In 1962, the demand of life on the road, took its toll on Poco Lena, she foundered. She would remain out the first half of the season, but was back at the middle of the season. After her win in Douglas, Arizona, Skipper flew himself home and sent Poco Lena with a hired driver. Skipper never made it home. His plane crashed and was not found till four days later. In the confusion, Poco Lena was somehow left in a horse trailer for days without food or water. When she was found, she had foundered, much worse than before. Poco Lena was taken back and sold in a sad state at the estate dispersal sale. Many people came interested in her. She was purchased for $14,000 but never made it to her new home. Somehow while on the road, the deal had fallen through and she was held at the Texas-Louisiana border for several days. A California dentist , Stephen Jensen, and his wife heard about the sale falling through and they stepped in and purchased Poco Lena for $12,500. They thought she would go well with a failed race horse stallion, by the name of Doc Bar, they had just purchased. When they got her to California, she was in such bad shape they considered putting her down there and then. They decided to take a chance on her. They nursed her and 2 years later finally got her to conceive. Her first was Doc O’ Lena and a year later she foaled Dry Doc. Both these horses went on to become legends of their own and really made a major impact on the horse world. A few months after Dry Doc was weaned, Poco Lena was put to sleep, December 1968. She died never having won the World Championship Crown, a sad ending to a phenomenal mare. Her physical at the end was a nothing compared to her physical prowess in her prime.

The Triple Crown Buckle Series was founded in November of 2010 by Rick Hoffman (2010 EXCA Futurity World Champion) and Bill Cameron (two time EXCA Pro World Champion Finalist and Level 3 EXCA Judge). This duo teamed together to help those who are intimidated by Extreme Cowboy racing get a jump start. The Boot camp introduces the Novice rider to obstacles in a safe learning environment with the assistance of EXCA’s two top riders and clinicians, Hoffman and Cameron. Many people get hurt in their back yards trying to introduce their horses to obstacles. The Boot Camp was created to offer a safe learning environment. With the help and expertise of EXCA top trainers, Hoffman and Cameron, students learn how

AMERICAN CIRCUIT RUEDO AMERICANO Hubo una serie de tres clinicas y carreras. La serie final fue disputada en Anza en Rancho Trailhead de Rick Hoffman el 17 de julio. 2011. Preparando en la clínica el sábado, los jinetes llegaron el Domingo listos para competir en su mejor corrida. Hubo tres carreras con cada competidor mejorar cada ejecución. The large crowds on hand showed why Reining By The Bay is one of the most prestigious events on the West Coast. Spectators were treated like paying guests at a fine hotel, with a fantastically shaded viewing area with a great view to keep their eyes on all the action. Likewise, for exhibitors, the facilities boasted great accommodations, for both them and their horses. Vendors stepped up and offered everything from saddles to photography. The back drop of the clear sky, crisp air, and the lush rolling hills provided a serene atmosphere to the action. It allowed for competitors to concentrate on their riding skills and for spectators,

Cody Clock on Ambers Holly Chex this provided a great way to view the action without distractions. The four tent viewing area provided the capacity crowd a stellar view. On hand were spectators from different parts of the United States, like Shelly Coons from Florida who had flown in Thursday night to see the events for Friday and Saturday. Likewise, Mike Lowery, with his wife and two children in tow, had come from Texas. “Being an amateur Reiner myself, I just started reining about 30 days ago and one ride is all it took to get me hooked. I had heard from many different people that this was one of the events I didn’t want to miss, I took a chance and came out Thursday and have not been disappointed yet.” said Mr. Lowery. As one spectator who came out from Richmond, California put it, “I love to watch Reining, here you get to see the horse and rider in synergy. This event requires the horse to be completely in the hand of the rider.” Walking down the vendor corridor, the aisles suddenly went empty. It was a mad exodus. People began walking briskly, all in the same direction. The handlers from the barns started following the crowds and some vendor’s hurriedly started closing up shop. The Open Derby was about to begin and no one wanted to miss it. With standing room only, the jewel in the crown was the $52,000 Added Conquistador Whiz Open Derby. It was evident that this was what people came to see, as the spectator area swelled beyond capacity. The shaded area was filled and yet others had no problem standing in the direct sun as they knew they were in for a treat. Looking like a crowd at a graduation, there were few spectators without cameras. Everyone knew they were about to be treated to a great exhibition; cameras and camera phones at the

Porterville, Ca, July 3, 2011. At a Lienzo in Porteville, California,
at battle was brewing for the Escaramuza State Champion. A win here had implications for a possible berth to the National Charro Congress Puebla 2011. As they readied themselves, team members were scrambling to make sure everything was right for their 8 minute routines. With the heat topping 85 degrees by 9 a.m., tension and nerves only added to an already heated competition.
La Azaleas Organizers of the State tournament, Hacienda 56 from Sylmar, CA , with the Juan De La Torre at the helm, made sure the lienzo was ready for the Escaramuza competitions to begin promptly at 9 a.m. They were also aware of how fierce the competition was to be that morning. As Juan De La Torre said, “These girls are extreme competitors and we know how important today is for each of these teams. Our job is to provide the best ring for them to demonstrate their skills and hopefully today, we have been successful.” Present were the favorites Las Azaleas from Mira Loma, Ca, defending 2010 State Champions. Lead by team captain Maribel Gutierrez, Las Azaleas were poised to defend their crown and hopefully take a huge lead margin in the point tabulation to ensure a trip to Puebla 2011.

Hacienda Miranda In the Saturday competitions, the team from Indio, CA, La Potosina had scored 313 and had set a high bar for Las Azaleas and the other teams. Every girl on each team knew the implications of the day’s results and in an event where even attire is judged, they knew, today, they had to bring their “A” game. When the competition started, and the dust began to fly, it was easy to see how these drill teams got their names of Escaramuza (skirmish). Each performing team, made precise and complex patterns in their routines which, to an observer, seemed to be headed for collision; but such was not the case. The months of preparation showed in each routine as teams executed their complex maneuvers with skilled horsemanship. For the favorites, Las Azaleas, a 3rd consecutive state championship was not to be today. As a spill by one of their team members, cost them negative points and left the crown up for grabs. As team captain Maribel said, “Today was not our day. We still have regional and nationals and we won’t let those opportunities go. We will go back and regroup and show what we are made of at regional and nationals.” Unfortunately, in this event there could only be one winner. When the dust settled and points were tabulated, Hacienda Miranda was to be the State Champion. The highlight of their performance was a slide by Violeta Luna which left even the most seasoned competitor in awe. Violeta was anchor for her team’s performance and pushed them over the top. Led by team captain Alejandra Jimenez, the girls from Hacienda Miranda seized on the opportunity and executed a near flawless routine to win the competition. For Juan De La Torre captain of Hacienda 56 and organizers of the state finals, it was evident from the outcome that all his hard work had payed off with the cheers from the crowd and the happy faces of the members of the escaramuza teams.

July 24, 2011, Porterville, CA. Organizers of the United States Charreria Regional Championship, Hacienda 56 and Juan De La Torre, knew that their two day event was going to be the ring where the best Charro and Escaramuza teams were going to compete for a shot at Puebla 2011. This was the second of three events leading up to the selection of the U.S. teams to represent the U.S. in Mexico at the Charreria finals at Puebla 2011. The stage was set for some great action and no one benefited more than the spectators who showed up to cheer for their favorites. Up first were the “flowers of the Charreria”, the Escaramuza teams.
La Azaleas Las Azaleas from Mira Loma were looking to avenge their defeat as state champions and the newly crowned state champions, Hacienda Miranda from Norco, led by team captain Alejandra Jimenez, were not going to make it easy. Vying for an upset, was the 3rd place finisher at the state finals, La Potosina from Indio, California. But with the best of the best completing the field, it was anybody’s win. The Escaramuza competition gave spectators exactly what they came for, excitement, thrills, and horsemanship at its best. Riding their Albardas (side saddles), each presented their best routines. All participants gave it their all and it was evident in the tabulation of the scores. As the Mexican delegate and judge, who came in from Mexico, Guadalupe Pena Villarreal, said, “The point totals that these

Los organizadores del Campeonato Regional de la Charrería de los Estados Unidos, Hacienda 56 y Juan De La Torre, sabía que su evento de dos días iba a ser el cuadrilátero donde los mejores equipos de Charro y Escaramuza iban a competir por un pase a Puebla 2011. Este era el segundo de tres acontecimientos que tenia consecuencias en la selección de los equipos en los E.U. para representar a los Estados Unidos en México en las finales de Charrería en Puebla 2011. El escenario estaba listo para gran acción y nadie se iba a beneficiar más que los anfitriones que se presentaron para apoyar a sus favoritos. Primero en la competición, las "flores de la Charrería", los equipos de la Escaramuza. Las Azaleas de Mira Loma buscaban vengar su derrota como campeonas del Estado y los campeonas de estado recientemente coronadas, Hacienda Miranda de Norco, liderado por la capitana del equipo Alejandra Jiménez, no pensaban hacerlo fácil. Buscando echarle a perder los sueños de ambos, estaba La Potosina de Indio, California, que acabo en el tercer lugar en las finales del Estado,. De acuerdo a Alejandra Jiménez, capitán de Hacienda Miranda y delegada estatal, como está ahora, Hacienda Miranda, Las Azaleas, Rancheras de la Villa, Altenitas, Valentinas y Reinas del Perdregal han ganado un pase a Puebla 2011. El destino de La Potosina está todavía en el aire. Scoring 344, Las Azaleas showed they had regrouped and would not be denied the regional title. “Our push was that we lost (state) due to factors beyond our control not due to our riding ability. Our team member fell because her horse spooked from the sound of a water tank erupting, giving us negative points.” Said team captain Maribel Gutierrez. The state champions, Hacienda Miranda who had guaranteed their trip to Puebla by winning state, finished 7th in a field 14. Alejandra Jimenez team captain said, “We weren’t a complete team, we were working with different horses and some of our members were not our regulars. Girls were on vacations with their families and we had to bring in others. We didn’t slack off though; we gave it our best shot.”

Toni Gallegos team captain of La Potosina said, “Right now, we still have hope, and with some luck at nationals, we will be going to Puebla.” For all these teams, the trip to the Charreria finals in Mexico, the largest sports fair of the year in Charreria, is a dream for many.

Reining has always been popular in the Southwestern United States where it has its roots. The sport has experienced growth around the world in places like Germany, Japan, Chile, Canada, and Australia. One place where the sport is currently growing the fastest is Mexico. Started in 1992 by Javier Alvarez Malo, the Associacion Mexicana de Caballos de Rienda (AMCR) was initiated with the intention of promoting Reining in Mexico. For eight years, Malo worked to promote Reining throughout Mexico and in 2000 held the first Reining competitions in Apapataro, Queretaro. Since
Classico 2010 2000 the competition has been held at the same venue each year. With each passing year, more competitors have been enrolling in the competitions. According to Iris Alvarez Malo, the administrator of the AMCR, Reining is becoming more and more popular. Even though Charreria is the national sport of Mexico; the AMCR is seeing a steady increase in its membership rolls. Their best year in terms of new members was 2010 when it held its tenth anniversary Reining event. Although Charreria still remains ever popular, Ms. Malo says there are members who are Charros and also practice reining. Moreover, there are members who used to be active members in Charreria and now they are very active only in reining. One of the problems with organizing Reining events, to further promote the sport, is funding. She says events are key to recruiting members because events provide people a chance to see what Reining is all about. Although their membership numbers are low, close to 200, she feels that there are at least 500 more practicing the sport throughout Mexico. According to Ms. Malo, the members that they have are very active. They have been able to organize Reining events throughout Mexico in the hopes of bringing attention to the sport of Reining. In 2004, with the help of its members, the AMCR organized the first National Reining Circuit in different states in Mexico. In 2003, members from the AMCR, represented Mexico in the World Master Series in Oklahoma City and in Italy the following

In 2006, these competitions grew to 9 in which 110 participants took part in the competitions throughout Mexico. At the heart of each of these events was the promotion of Reining to bring more attention to the sport by exposing it to spectators. 2007 and 2008 were banner years for the AMCR. During these years, in addition to holding the annual reining event, there was a 2-day National Championship Competition for the first time. This was significant for two reasons. First, because there were participants from different parts of Mexico which signaled that there were people practicing the sport throughout Mexico. The second reason was that the event was supported by the American Quarter Horse Association. The prize money during these two days of competitions was also a significant amount, $150,000.00. The AMCR rules and regulations were loosely based on those set forth by the NRHA, but with each passing year, those rules and regulations get more and more close to those dictated by the NRHA. Some of the rules were due to the fact that Reining is a relatively new sport in Mexico. They also follow the patterns established by the NRHA. For example, the riders are classified in terms of time of active competition as opposed to money won. This was due to the fact that when the association first started, everyone was an amateur. In addition, they also have a rule for new horses where the judging is a little less critical with the idea of helping the horse learn the sport. The association is also very active in offering clinics for its members. Andrea Fappani is among those who have gone into Mexico to give clinics and demonstrations. Recently, the association brought Dale Harvey from Oklahoma to hold a clinic for members. Ms. Malo believes that it is only a matter of time before Reining becomes as popular as it is here in the States. She indicates that every day she sees more and more people who are getting into the sport of reining. Already, she is seeing the style of Reining make inroads in Charreria. For now, one thing is for certain; more and more horses from the US are being purchased and taken across the border. According to Ms Malo, Charreria is really taking interest in those horses from reining bloodlines. Keep in mind that Charreria in Mexico boasts about 35,000 registered members. Who knows, it may be a matter of time before reining becomes as popular in Mexico as it is in the United States.

He had some problems as a 2-year-old and as a 3-year-old he ran some nice races, but we also missed the Super Derby. He’s really at his prime now and I’m just happy that he’s getting healthier and better every time. He ran second in the Vessels Maturity and he also posted a phenomenal :17.30 workout at 350 yards earlier this year. Rodrigo didn’t let him go tonight. He probably could have gone faster, but I would have been just as happy if he had not set the track record.” As fast as Chivalry SR has shown to be, he does have his share of quirks. “He’s a finicky eater,” Albert Sterns added. “He stays lean like a Marathon runner. He never seems to gain any weight. He’s very particular about his eating habits. He usually doesn’t crave food. We always have to tempt him with different mixtures. I guess you could say he is a connoisseur of fine foods.” Albert Sterns and Patricia Sterns have been racing and breeding Quarter Horses for a long time. Albert Stern was one of the original First Down Dash share holders and the Sterns currently have breeding shares in Walk Thru Fire and Separatist. Chivalry SR earned Sterns Ranches $50,000 for his sixth win in 15 career starts. “He ran like a monster tonight,” said Freaky’s owner Armando Aguirre about Chivalry SR. “You have to give him credit. He is one fast horse.” Vessels Maturity winner Snitcher finished third and was followed across the wire by Simons Wonder Choice, First Down King, Pappyscoronalilbro, Shining First Dash, How Goes It, Dickson Creek and Sir Seth.
Govenor’s Cup Futurity winner Fixin To Fly Danielle Hall and Jim Hanson’s Fixin To Fly won the $466,000 Governor’s Cup Futurity after Long Gone was disqualified from first and placed ninth after interfering with fastest qualifier Ima Chickie Two with about 100 yards left in the 350-yard contest. The victory was bittersweet for Fixin To Fly’s camp, as the sorrel gelding had to be vanned off the track as a precautionary measure. “He walked inside the ambulance on his own,” said assistant trainer Ryan Hanson. “(Jockey) Jay Conklin said that the horse felt pretty sore and he didn’t want to gallop him back in that condition. That’s why I didn’t want to stop him when he started going inside.” “It was a legitimate call,” said Long Gone’s trainer, Adan Farias. “The stewards have a job to do and they made the right call. It hurts right now and it’s money out of our pockets, but you have to be professional about it. It’s part of racing.” “We can’t worry about the past,” added Armando Leon. “I know we have a good horse in Long Gone and he’ll have other races to run.” Second in the Kindergarten Futurity earlier this year, Fixin To Fly earned $193,620 in the Governor’s Cup to take his career earnings to $258,722. DOMA TRADICIONAL Lunging Part 2: Backing up Picadero Parte 2: Caminando asi atras Continuing our series in the lunging, the next step to lunging is teaching your horse to move off of your movements. In Doma Tradicional, these methods help to solidify your leadership position. To understand this, we must look at herd dynamics. Within a herd, there is always a lead mare and lead stallion. In times of trouble, the lead mare leads the herd away from trouble and the stallion protects the rear. The herd is based on hierarchy. If we were to put the lead mare in the center and gather all the horses around her, the most dominant ones would be closest to her, with less dominant ones farthest away. Young horse quickly learn their position and to respect the personal space of the leader. If a young horse gets too close to the leader, a simple look in its direction should be enough warning. It should back away and respect the space of the leader. If it chooses not to heed the warning, there may be a physical punishment, not only from the leader, but from others as well. Why others? That horse is not respecting their positions within the herd as well. With that in mind, if you have been lunging your horse based on the technique provided in the last article, you may have realized you are getting your horse to move based on your movements. You stepping to the rear of the horse is forcing him to move forward. You are taking your first steps to establishing your leadership position. Now, that you have him going lunging in circles and stopping, the next step is teaching him to back off. To do this, you will employ only a halter and your long lead rope, 25 ft. NO WHIPS. Lunge your horse, remember you should not be pushing him hard, he should be walking and maybe loping. The objective is not to tire him, it is to get him concentrating on you. Doma Tradicional is based on patience and time. Once you have lunged him at most 10 circles each way, stop him. As he stands there, face him, take your rope and begin to move it side to side, from left to right, and start walking towards him. Start with very short movements. This is very important. If your horse just stands there, increase the how wide and how hard you are moving the rope. The instant he makes moves one foot back, stop moving the rope and quickly walk towards him, rub his forehead and say, “Good boy!” It is extremely important that you make sure that you watch his feet and that you stop immediately when he moves a foot backward. This is especially important the first couple of times. You are teaching him the signal. If the horse does not move with soft

Al moverse usted así atrás de su caballo, lo está obligándolo a avanzar. Está dando sus primeros pasos para establecer su posición de liderazgo. Ahora, que lleva su caballo moviéndose en círculos y deteniéndose, el siguiente paso es enseñarle caminar así atrás. Para esto, se emplean sólo un cabestro y su cuerda larga, 25 pies. wiggles remember to increase the intensity, but not so much that you hit him with the swivel of the rope. If he doesn’t move with the rope, start moving towards him moving both hands at your sides, imitating a train and throwing kisses. Remember; STOP as soon as he moves. After 8 or 10 times of moving his foot, you can ask him to move all of him. Just continue wiggling until you see him move all his
feet. Do not overdo it on the first session, if you can get him to move a couple (2) steps back. You have done more than enough. Come back tomorrow and ask for a little more. PATIENCE. Once you have him moving several steps, maybe 3, stop him by saying “whoa”. The horse may stop on his own before you stop him, so on the next one, stop him before he stops. Repeat several times and make sure you stop him before he stops on his own. After a week or two, you should be backing him with no problem at the slightest signal. Try and incorporate this exercise in your lunging every day to keep the horse fresh. Start by asking him to move back 4 steps one week, then 8 steps the next and then maybe 15 the next. Be patient. This exercise does not need to be learned on its own and can be incorporated in the lunging. Most important, do not lose your patience and resort to physical punishment, you will only establish fear not respect. Let the horse know when he has right by rubbing his forehead and saying “good boy”. Do not punish mistakes, simply try again.
