1 Day Tour - (US side only) Question: What did the cow say to the dairy Farmer on a cold Sunday morning? Answer: Your tour conductor will tell you the answer on the trip, so sign up today and join us! Last year this tour sold out fast. A Short Farming Story: A young boy was walking to school in the holy land when he saw an old man planting an olive tree. The boy stopped and asked the old man why he was planting an olive tree that would take years to give fruit when he may not be alive at that time to eat the fruit. The old man smiled and responded, “Yes, that may be true, but our grandparents planted so we could eat and now we plant so our grandchildren can eat also.” Farmers worldwide are doing just that, planting so that others can eat the fruit of their fields.

Big Bend

National Park

The Big Bend is a colloquial name of a geographic region in the western part of the state of Texas in the United States along the border with Mexico, roughly defined as the counties north of the prominent northward bend in the Rio Grande as it passes through the gap between the Chisos Mountains in Texas and the Sierra Madre Oriental in Mexico. It is sometimes loosely defined as the part of Texas south of U.S. Highway 90 and west of the Pecos River.

Day 1 Leaving the Valley, we will follow the Rio Grande north in a comfortable, restroomequipped, climate-controlled motor coach. We pass through Rio Grande City, home of Fort Ringold (established 1848). A bit further down the road, we arrive at Roma (population 9,765), where the movie Zapata was filmed. We continue through Laredo, a major crossing point to Mexico, and Carrizo Springs, whose artesian wells produce exceptional, clean water, stopping for lunch along the way. Tonight will be spent in a comfortable hotel in Del Rio, a pleasant, green border city, close to Lake Amistad, which we visit. Day 2 After breakfast, we head west on US 90, crossing the Pecos River and passing by Seminole Splendid Isolation, Canyon. We stop at the Judge The Big Bend... There is a place in Far West Roy Bean Visitor Center and Texas where night skies are hear about the famous judge, dark as coal and rivers carve known as “the law west of the temple-like canyons in ancient Pecos”. We grab some picnic items, and then head south. Two hours later we are in The Basin, the very heart of the park (altitude 5,400 feet). We drive along Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive, walk to the mouth of the iconic Santa Elena Canyon and stop for lunch at historic Castolon, a former military post. We visit Panther Junction, park headquarters, and follow the short, interesting Nature Trail. Leaving the park, we pause in Terlingua Ghosttown, formerly a mining town and hear about the history of this remarkable border community. We drive back to our Alpine hotel for dinner. Day 4 We now head north to the historic town of Fort Davis, where we visit the immaculate National Historic Site (1854-1891) as well as strolling around this pretty town. Skirting the Davis Mountain we head over beautiful Wild Rose Pass to Balmorhea. Here we observe the famous swimming pool, whose capacity is 3.5 million gallons of water, which has a constant temperature of 72-76 degrees. We turn east on I-10 and travel 50 miles to Fort Stockton.

Finally, at St. Genevieve Winery’s tasting room, we have the chance to taste some wines from this successful local winery. The first glass is on us! Overnight at Fort Stockton. Day 5 Heading east along I-10, we reach Sonora Caverns after 2 hours. We take a guided tour of the caverns, which are a National Natural Landmark of extraordinary beauty. We visit the caverns with a special guide, at a relaxed pace in the 71F temperature with 98 degrees humidity. Our guide will explain, as we view the best known sites, how these crystal calcite formations, described as the most beautiful in Texas, were formed. After lunch, we continue our drive through the Texas Hill Country to Uvalde, where we spend the night. Tonight’s entertainment will be a wonderful performance by the Sahawe Indian Dancers.

Day 6 Birthplace to some surprising people, center of honey production and cactus juice, satellite campus of Sul Ross State University and a fine old opera house, Uvalde (population 15,800) merits our attention this morning, that makes unique mesquite rocking chairs and tables. We drive past the home of former Vice President Nance, who was born here. We visit the Aviation Museum, which houses WWII vintage planes. Continuing for 300 miles on our last lap to McAllen, we have time to reflect on the great memories and new vistas (and hopefully some wonderful pictures) we have enjoyed over the past few days.
