Charro Ranch Park recently completed a bird viewing station and volunteers installed a rainwater collection system to supply a water feature for the birds throughout the year. Founders Memorial Park is where you will find a junior Olympic-sized pool and pavilion, athletic fields and playscape. While at the park, you should stop next door and see the Dr. Pound Pioneer Farmstead, which includes a historical museum and garden. Construction on a new 165,000 square foot covered arena for Dripping Springs Ranch Park is under way. The space will have a concession stand, bleacher style seating and a 12,000 square foot banquet hall. Construction will last through the summer of 2013. The park improvements will include building equestrian and pedestrian trails, primitive camping areas and picnic areas with horseshoe and washer throwing courts. Historical Mercer Street in downtown Dripping Springs has been awarded more than $400,000 in grant funding from Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO). Construction will begin in the summer of 2013 and will include new sidewalks, cross walks, a pedestrian bridge, bicycle racks, lighting, and signage along Mercer Street. The bustling street has been a long time favorite community gathering place for any array of festivals and City events. I invite you to attend our annual Founders Day Festival, held each April as a celebration of our heritage and an embrace of our present. The festival continues to grow, with thousands of visitors flocking each year to our town. Proceeds from the weekend of live music, food and good old-fashioned fun directly benefit local nonprofit organizations, churches, school and park programs, youth groups and charities. ripping Springs is a terrific place to shop, offering a wide array of experiences from the practical to the artistic. Whether taking in the sights and sounds of historic Mercer Street, or perusing the shops along U.S. 290, or the quaint offerings found on the back roads, there are bargains and hidden gems waiting to be discovered. “We have a little bit of everything,” says DS chamber executive director Sherrie Parks. “If you were to sum it up in a word, I think ‘eclectic’ would apply.” The fun starts along Mercer Street [for more about Mercer Street, see page 15], where a host of shops like Lone Star Gifts feature unique shopping venues with a potpourri of merchandise. “Lone Star Gifts is a collection of vendors – we have almost 60,” says Amanda Bartosh. “The great thing about shopping here is since we are a collective of locals. These are people who do a lot of the crocheting and sewing themselves. There are artisans who craft jewelry by hand. Everything here is all about tender loving care. In other cases, people

have gone and discovered really interesting items, cleaned them up and offer them for resale. We have a little bit of everything – new or like new, as well as vintage.” U.S. 290 has everything from boutiques to hardware stores and all points in between. Sunset Canyon Pottery is just such a place. Since 1997, the Dripping Springs business has been making and firing its own pottery from scratch, producing a line of beautiful yet highly functional stoneware. It offers more than just mere shopping – customers who want to see the pottery being

made are more than welcome. In addition to the company’s own product, Sunset Canyon Pottery’s gallery features work from a number of local and Central Texas artisans. Another great stop along U.S. 290 is New Canaan Farms. For decades, the Dripping Springs business has created top-notch jellies, jams, salsas and sauces. Just one taste and you’ll never be satisfied with run-of-the mill again. The store’s Raspberry Chipotle Sauce, great for grilling and basting, is the stuff of legend. Other favorites include Jalapeño Jelly, Hill Country Caviar (black-eyed peas, onions, bell pepper and jalapeños), and Raspberry Jalapeño Jelly. Ingredients are fresh and locally grown. Peaches come from Fredericksburg; blackberries come from Wimberley and Fredericksburg; blueberries come from East Texas.

New Canaan Farms participates in international food shows in New York and Chicago and in other cities throughout the year. It has a permanent booth at the Dallas World Trade Center, marketing product three times a year.

Charro Ranch Park presents the Texas Hill Country in all of its primitive splendor in a 64-acre setting. Hiking trails present vision vistas and a newly-constructed blind offers birdwatchers a camouflaged observation point to view our fine feathered friends – as well as other indigenous wildlife – in a natural habitat. “Birding provides an excellent opportunity to learn the importance of conserving native habitat for birds, wildlife, and for people to reconnect with nature,” says Hays County Master Naturalist M. Lee Brown. “And it is a real experience to walk the park trails that traverse a variety of wildlife and plant habitat and interesting features such as the Solstice Circle and Walk of Peace.” City Administrator Michelle Fischer says that since Charro first opened, it has proved a big hit with birders. “If you want a peaceful and quiet park experience to view wildlife, then Charro is the place for you,” says Fischer. “The Solstice Circle, built by the family that donated the park, is simply beautiful. We are told the birding is absolutely spectacular.” Charro Ranch Park is located at 22690 West FM 150. Dripping Springs Ranch Park joined the city in 2008 and will be a home to events like the

Dripping Springs Fair and Rodeo, Dripping With Taste, Fall Fest, concerts and happenings. Currently under construction, the park will debut September 14 when the Chamber of Commerce holds the “Dripping With Taste Wine and Food Festival.” “We are building a 165,000 -square-foot covered pavillion complete with an arena,” explains Deputy City Administrator Ginger Faught. “We will be able to host everything from horse shows to concerts at the new venue. It will also have a 12,000foot banquet hall. Pedestrian and equestrian trails are also under construction. There is already a

wildlife viewing area, as well as a playground that were built earlier this year. There is also an existing farmhouse at the site that we rent out. There is already an outdoor rodeo arena on the grounds that has a number of events booked there this year.” That includes the annual Memorial Day Rodeo a regional favorite that should not be missed [see page events on page 24]. The gleaming new park will even have primitive camping and RV hookups. There is a pond and an large open area ideal for flying kites or tossing a frisbee with Man’s Best Friend. Dripping Springs Ranch Park

is located at 29401 Ranch Road 12. Founders Memorial Park is the city’s cornerstone venue and adjoins the Dr. Joseph M. Pound Historical Farmstead, an 1850sera historic gem. The park has a heated swimming pool, as well as football and soccer fields. But it is the Pound House itself that is sure to interest even the most jaded of history buffs. Dr. Pound and his wife Sarah built a two-room house, raised nine children and opened their home and grounds to the community. The home served as a medical office and hospital, church, school house, and gathering place. As the community grew, the log house evolved into the beautiful home that exists to this day. The community of Dripping Springs has spent several years and a great deal of money to repair and restore the home and farmstead. The Pound house is a Recorded Texas Historical Landmark and is included in the National Register of Historic Places. The Friends of the Pound House Foundation, with the support of individuals, businesses and foundations throughout Central Texas, secured funding for and coordinated the restoration project. Winemaker Allan Fetty produces well-balanced wines with fruit-forward flavors and fullbodied structures. The white wines are typically unoaked, while the reds enjoy ample time in French oak barrels to develop heightened flavors and rich tannins. Westcave Cellars produces both estate and private vineyard wines. Estate varietals include Vermentino, Muscat Blanc, Viognier, Petite Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Tannat. meates the atmosphere. It isn’t any wonder. Elliot comes from a family rich in the California grape industry. Driftwood Estate Winery produces an array of different wines from eight varieties of grapes. Most of the grapes are Mediterranean berries that flourish in hot weather climates. The flagship red wine is created from the syrah grape. Wine connoisseurs will recognize the syrah by its more common Australian name, the Shiraz, which is a fruity and intelligent wine that patrons are sure to enjoy. While there are a host of places to grab a bite — far too many to name — some suggestions might include world-renowned chef Damian Mandola’s Trattoria Lisina, a casual familyowned Italian eating establishment just like the small trattorie that dot the Italian countryside

and cities. The atmosphere is warm, rustic, with a Tuscan country feel and a tasting room with locally crafted wines. The fare is “cucina rustica.” Dishes include braised meats, like Osso Buco, lamb stew, roasted pork, homemade pasta with Wild Boar Ragu, thin, crisp

Barbecue and Texas are virtually synonymous, but there is only one Salt Lick, and it is widely considered the best in the state. High praise indeed, but this is a venue that lives up to even the highest of expectations. The Salt Lick has been hailed by some of the toughest critics in the world, earning five-star ratings at every turn. It is consistently rated the best barbecue in the region. The Salt Lick is so good it actually transcends barbecue. No less that Gentleman’s Quarterly has said, “the Salt Lick is the best dining in Texas.” It all starts with how the meat is prepared. The Salt Lick is the only open-pit, woodsmoked barbecue still served in Texas. It is “southern style,” cooked with sauce. You will want more sauce... and the good folks at Salt Lick are more than happy to help. The Salt Lick is a CASH ONLY business, so bring the green, although they do have an ATM beside the cash register.

Salt Lick is located in nearby Driftwood at 18300 FM 1826. Many years ago, providence united Chef Chae Donahue with restaurateur Carl Shroyer at the base of a Washington State Ski Resort on the east side of Crystal Mountain. A relative then drew them to the unique beauty of the Texas Hill Country, but after all, genius typically is united by luck. And so it is with Creek Road Cafè in Dripping Springs, located at 301 U.S. 290. In a phrase, it is world class cuisine. “Texas Highways Magazine” has already recognized the establishment’s dedication to excellence. They feature excellent steaks, the freshest seafood, artistic and imaginative salads, pastas, sandwiches and soups. The restaurant is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. Mercer Street is the heart of Dripping nce upon a time, U.S. 290 wasn’t the multilane thoroughfare it is today. In those days, it ran right along the heart of historic Dripping Springs, which is located along what is today known as “Mercer Street.” For years, the town grew in different directions and Mercer Street began to fade into memory. But that has all changed in recent years. Today, Mercer Street has again become the central focus of Dripping Springs as wine bars, dance halls and shopping venues have sprouted up in its textured vintage architecture. “It really started with ‘The Barber Shop,’” says the chamber’s executive director Sherrie

Parks. “They converted the old barber shop into a cool wine and beer bar, complete with an open area outdoors. That was followed by The Dudley’s Wine Bar & Tap Room that has also

been a big success.” The new businesses spurred shopping and inspired the new “Mercer Street Dance Hall,” and extremely cool family-oriented venue in the tradition of

the iconic Texas dance halls found in Luchenback and Greene. City officials realized they were onto something and quickly found help to continue the revitalization process. “We have a $400,000 grant from the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organizatin,” City Administrator Michelle Fischer explains. “It will provide us with new sidewalks, traffic control, pedestrian lighting and benches.” “It is extremely exciting,” Parks says. “People can stop, shop, eat, drink, dance and do it all within a simple and short walk.” Mercer Street is back and is a must-see when visiting Dripping Springs.

ripping Springs boasts one of the finest school districts in Texas, an award-winning public schools system. Covering approximately 190 square miles, the Dripping Springs Independent School District (DSISD) extends from Cedar Valley to Henley and from Hamilton Pool to 8 miles south on Ranch Road 12. “Our schools are simply outstanding,” says the chamber’s executive director Sherrie Parks. “In fact, they were the primary reason we moved here.” Visitors Bureau Director Pam Owens echoes the praise. “They are just top notch and always have been,” Owens assures. They aren’t just blowing smoke. Dripping Springs ISD has a proud tradition of educational excellence. It is a growing 4A school district with an enrollment of more than 4,500 students on five campuses: Dripping Springs Elementary School, Walnut Springs Elementary School, Rooster Springs Elementary School, Dripping Springs Middle School and Dripping Springs High School. All of them have won repeated honors for excellence from the Texas Education Agency. More just around the corner from Dripping Springs here is so much to do in Dripping Springs – and just as much within miles of the city’s limits. How about iconic Hamilton Pool Preserve for example? The stunning beauty of Hamilton Pool has made it one of the most popular destinations in Central Texas. More than 70,000 people visit Hamilton Pool each year. The main attraction is the swimming hole, but there is also a trail leading to the Pedernales River. Hamilton Pool, located at 24300 Hamilton Pool Road, is open from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. year round. Just down the road from Hamilton Pool is Westcave Preserve. The dominant feature of the preserve is the limestone canyon that

leads to a hidden grotto and waterfall. The canyon was formed when a limestone cave collapsed, thousands of years ago. Westcave Preserve allows access to the grotto only during guided tours.
