The exceptions to this are firstly when specifically restricted by law (e.g., restricted Government area) or when taken on private property, bearing in mind the law of trespass as well as the private owners right to impose restrictions on photography. The right to privacy of the individual is also a serious consideration e.g., in a toilet etc. Street photographers, for example, are free to take photos of anyone or anything in the streets (public area) or parks. They do not need one’s consent. Even if the subject happens to be on private property at the time, say on the balcony of an apartment, anybody walking by on the public walkway outside may take their picture

• No requirement to explain why they are photographing the subject No obligation to show the photo

• Attempting to physically restrain or touch the photographer is breaking the law

As a photographer someone can therefore take a photo of anyone, anywhere public, as the act of taking a photo is not illegal. The photographer has to carry out his shoot within the constraints of specifically prohibited areas (Government restricted) without trespassing, impinging on the right to privacy or affecting copyright (after the fact)

• “Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever It remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything.”

• No obligation to identify themselves

• The only legal way to prevent being photographed it is to walk away • Physically threatening the photographer is likewise illegal

Hello BCC Members, With the ever growing popularity of street photography, herewith some info on the legalities and rights of street photographers: SA law says, any person may photograph any other person, without their permission, in public spaces. This includes anything which can be seen from a public area. These people may or may not be the sole focus of your photograph and the emphasis is on the word public.

The rights of the legal street photographer are thus that:

• The photo is legally the photographer’s property • It is within the photographers’ rights to continue taking photos whilst in discussion with the subject

In conclusion it is sometimes better to lose the battle and win the war and with this in mind, a smile and showing the image with and offer to e mail the end product will most likely result in being invited to take more

• No law is broken by photographing someone publicly

What are salons and why do we do them?

Photographers are invited to submit their images in various categories for possible inclusion in the salon exhibition. A panel of judges scores all the submitted images and chooses approximately 20% for exhibition. The images that are chosen are known as “acceptances” and these are the “salon acceptances” that are required for Club promotion.

The salon conditions of entry document (salon brochure) will provide all the detail of the event such as: Timetable Closing date, judging dates, when results will be available and exhibition dates.

In South Africa, PSSA as the national organization representing amateur photographers, uses a guideline for acceptances for PDI (projected digital images) salons at between 20 and 25% and up to 35% for prints and Audio Visuals. Overseas you may see rates between 25 45%!

The acceptance rate will be different for each event and is set by the jury but within the parameters set by the organizations which approved the exhibition (salon) and lend their name to it (patronage).

The prime reason for presenting a salon is to see work that you would otherwise not see and share that with all our members and the public.

To be able to exhibit your work on a salon, you had to obtain the approval of the judges. Today it is still the same in photography that all entries received are evaluated by the jury and only those found acceptable will be exhibited. And this is how we think of a photographic salon today an exhibition of photography.

• “Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever It remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything.”

Salons are either National ones where only photographers from South Africa (as well as all members of PSSA worldwide) may enter or international ones where photographers from all over the world compete. A list of salons is published on the PSSA website, in Club newsletters and entry for SA salons is generally via PhotoVaultOnline. Conditions of Entry

The entry fee is there to cover cost and if there is a surplus that is a bonus.

A collection of 14 highly commended pictures have been unveiled by the Natural History Museum (NHM) as part of its annual competition, now in its 58th year.

NHM director Dr Doug Gurr said the entries reflect some of the world's best photography talent and encourage "curiosity, connection and wonder".

"These inspiring images convey human impact on the natural world in a way that words cannot from the urgency of declining biodiversity to the inspiring bounce back of a protective species," he said.

A snow covered stag in London and tree frogs enjoying a "pool party" are among the stars of this year's Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. The photographs include a majestic snow covered red deer stag, snapped in Richmond Park, southwest London, by seven year old Joshua Cox. The schoolboy captured the image after he and his father followed a group of deer at a safe distance, before one stopped as the snowfall intensified. "He (the deer) almost looked as if he was having a snow shower," Joshua said. Other entries include an other worldly image of European perch swimming through a sheet of algae snapped by Tiina Tormanen and a giraffe "disappearing" in Nairobi, Kenya, captured by Jose Fragozo. They are joined by a shot of a polar bear leaning out of a window at an abandoned settlement, an eye to eye view of a southern right whale and an inquisitive dog sniffing a Ansloth.exhibition of the top 100 images submitted to the competition opens at the NHM in South Kensington, southwest London, on 14 October before going on a UK and international tour. This year's showcase includes entries from photographers of all ages from 93 different Eachcountries.entry was judged anonymously based on its creativity, originality and technical excellence by an international panel of industry experts.

The winning images will be announced on 11 October at an awards ceremony hosted by wildlife presenter and conservationist Chris Packham. The image by French underwater photographer and biologist, Laurent Ballesta, had an "otherworldly beauty" and revealed a "fleeting moment of fascinating animal behaviour" witnessed by very few people.

Chair of the judging panel, Roz Kidman Cox, added: "What's stayed with me is not just the extraordinary mix of subjects in this year's collection a vast panorama of the natural world but the emotional strength of so many of the pictures."
