Preface This document is a concise report of the eight weeks of summer internship I did at Vogue, India’s leading fashion magazine. This internship project is a part of my four year bachelor’s program at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi.

Introduction Vogue Magazine, the front runner of everything fashion. Working here is a dream for many and I still cant believe that I got the oppurtinty to do just that. I interviewed with the Junior Fashion Editor, Daniel Franklin and was immediately hired as his assistant at the Delhi office thats located in Saket. The past two months have been a life changing experience for me and I would like to share it all with you.

Vogue India Vogue India is the Indian edition of the monthly fashion and lifestyle magazine called Vogue. It is the 17th international edition of Vogue and the first edition in South Asia. Vogue India is published by Condé Nast India Pvt. Ltd., a 100% owned subsidiary of Condé Nast International. Vogue India was the first magazine released in India that is 100% foreign owned. Condé Nast India is based in Mumbai and also has an office in New Delhi. The magazine was founded in year 2007.The first issue of Vogue India was the October 2007 issue, which was released on 20 September 2007. The cover featured Bipasha Basu, Gemma Ward and Priyanka Chopra on the regular cover, and Monikangana Dutta, Preity Zinta, and Lakshmi Menon on the gatefold cover. The cover was shot by photographer Patrick Demarchelier.

Delhi Office This summer, I was able to experience an accelerating environment inside the mass media company, firsthand as the only intern for the Vogue editorial team in Delhi. The office is located in Saket’s district center and is opposite the Select City Mall. The teams of Conde Nast Traveller, GQ and Vogue work from here. The Vogue team here compromises of the advertsing department, associate editor, digital writers, sales director and the junior fashion editor. The Delhi office was a great environment to work in. I got to interact with people from different departments and understand the work culture of a publication. One of my biggest take backs was seeing the efficiency of the coodriantion between the Mumbai office and Delhi office.

My Role The Junior Fashion Editor, Daniel Franklin took my interview and hired me as his assistant and the Delhi office intern for Vogue India. My role primarly was of a fashion intern. I started with a lot of research and understandig the magazine but slowly started doing more hands on work like sourcing and assisting my mentor at his shoots. I was also connected with Mumbai office and had to update them regularly of the work happening here. My biggest task was of sourcing for a shoot in London. I was assigned to source all the accessories and had to find designers, create sheets and have them delivered to the London Office. Another big project was designing the Vogue Trend pages.

Dominatrix was a key trend and to work with the art team to create trend pages was nothing less than a dream.

The following include the projects that I have done with the editorial team of Vogue. Junior Fashion Editor and my mentor, Mr Daniel Franklin guided me and supported me through this. My major projects include research, graphic design, sourcing and assistant styling.

Trend Boards AW 19/20 Brief - A monthly editorial meeting is held at the Mumbai office where the fashion team sits and reviews various trends. From there on, upcoming shoots and spreads of the magazine’s upcoming issues are decided. The task was to research and create trend boards for AW19/20. The size specification was a3 and only runway pictures were to be used.

Research - Thorough research was required to understand trends.

Whether it was trend spotting on TagWalk or Vogue Runway or reading various articles on Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Clare, all was done various times to ensure that all the trends were covered.

Process - After researching and making a list of the trends in focus, TagWalk helped me finalise the pictures I wanted to incorporate. I designed a basic layout and made slight changes to each board. A colour palette and keywords were added to show the ‘mood’ too.

Learning - My first and most elaborate project perhaps, taught me the time constraints at the magazine as all of them were made in a span of two days. Another take back was the importance of brilliant research without which each project is incomplete.

Mixing all nude colors gives you a certain classy and ladylike look, while beige hue looks clean and fresh. Of course, it’s not always easy to get it right. There are thousands of dependences: hair color, eyes, skin color, etc. The layering and other colors combinations can make you look exciting. This is a new black color which allows you to add stiletto heels, luxurious accessories and bold lips.”

“Keep it sexy and sophisticated, as we are here to observe new 2018 trends. In today’s article I want to draw your attention to nude and beige colored outfits. I am talking about various shades of nude color staples, starting from beige, cream, brown and everything in between. It’s quite a massive trend in today’s fashion what gives you an understated elegance. It can look either glamour, polished, edgy or boho chic, everything depends on your style.

“Start adding pantsuits to your wish list – everything from the classic to the cleverly reimagined will make the cut, but bear in mind that the pieces are less important than the silhouette. To really make an impact, you need a padded, outsized and allround statement-making shoulder. Take notes from Stella McCartney, who offered up a silky pink dress with such strong shoulders that it tipped over from purely feminine to seriously fierce.”

Emma Sells, Editor, Net-a-porter For Fall/Winter 2019, Acne Studios creative director Jonny Johansson has tasked himself with reinterpreting classic, formal womenswear for the youth. “Young people want to look mature and sophisticated, yet still be young,” the designer is quoted. “I wanted to take strong womenswear codes and see them through disruptive eyes.”

Vogue Shops - Dominatrix Brief - The Fashion Director, Anaita Shroff selected the baord, ‘Dominatrix’, to be featured in the August issue’s Shops. Vogue Shops is a 2-3 page guide on a particular trend and how one can shop it and wear it. The brief was to research on the trend in depth and figure out an intertesting way to show it in 3 pages. I had to compile all my research and design the pages with the design head, Ms. Snigdha Kulkarni.

Research - Along with an in depth study on Dominatrix, various products were listed from advertisers and other brands. I went through all major online retailers and listed over a hundred products.

Process - After the research, mails were sent to the editors for their feedback. The products were first finalised, then a credits list was made and finally, the spreads were designed.

Learning - I have always seen the Vogue Shops as an exciting feature in the magazine. Experiencing what actually goes behind making the trend come to life was definately a highlight.

When I say the word “dominatrix”, I would take odds that the first thing to pop into your mind is something 50 Shades of Grey related. Or maybe, if you’re a crime buff, that one CSI episode where the victim was into being a submissive.

Whatever the case may be, the Dominatrix trend has hit the runway, and made it its Master! Fashion’s take on a Dominatrix means tight, almost constraining, clothes, a lot of leather and sex-appeal. However, some of the looks we are highlighting here could surprise you with their interesting interpretations of this fall/winter 18 trend and how they also reference some of pop culture’s greatest hits.

Just beat it! For his take on the Dominatrix trend, Adam Selman hints back to the full red vinyl outfit Michael Jackson wore during his Thriller music video. You can almost hear the door slam! It’s not only his use of red vinyl that leads back to the Dominatrix trend, but also the many belts and heart-shaped buckles on both the jacket and the pants. One could also say that the use of the heart-shaped buckle could hint back to the intimate affair that a Dominatrix is connected with, as well as the garter-esque belt situated on the upper thigh of the model.

There is a Dominatrix in the Matrix. Alexander Wang‘s take on the trend could not make us think of anything other than the iconic Trinity from the franchise. Not only would any long leather coat make you think of the movie, but the added detail of the thin 90s all-black sunglasses really hits the mark with the call-back to the Matrix.

That being said, the originality of the different zipper placements, and the use of a snake-skin looking leather, pushes this outfit out of the derivative movie reference arena and straight into the realm of high fashion statement dressing.

It’s impossible to talk about an eccentric fashion trend without mentioning the great house of Alexander McQueen. For their rendition of the Dominatrix trend, designer Sarah Burton went with a more literal interpretation. The form fitting corset, (with belt-like strips that slid down the hips, so long they could double as whips) and the large choker necklace worked well against the delicate mesh of the McQueen maxi skirt resulting in the perfect uniform for a modern day Dom. If you’re looking for more of a statement and extremely editorial look, this Max Mara outfit is the way to go. While wearing this dress, you are sure to feel quite powerful and in charge, all thanks to its shape and the material used. Not only does the use of gun metal gray leather hint back to the Dominatrix trend, but the natural waistbelt with hanging attachments subtly suggests corsetry and straps.

Now, if you want to be conservative yet sexy, Trussardi has got you. Their mix of the high neck knit top and strapless leather midi dress, with slits exposing the model’s thighs, is a perfect combination of staying proper all while showing off some skin.

Once more, we have a mix of red and black leather, all the way down to the cowboy boots. The way the leather dress is placed on the knit top, is reminiscent of how a corset is placed on a woman’s body, and instantly gives the look a next-gen Dominatrix attitude.

The success of this style comes down to the right mix of soft and hard fabric and the parts of the model’s body the designers chose to expose. These are all key elements in getting this season’s Dominatrix trend right. When the blend is just right, the outfit will instantly imply the power of a Dominatrix, without ever really having the wearer submit to any sort of sociality judgment.

Brief - It was my mentor’s first big editorial shoot and he wanted all hands on deck. After discussing the mood of the story with me, he assisgned me to source all the accessories for the shoot. The catch was that it was being shot in London and he only wanted European designers that would send in their products to the London office.

My Fair Lady, Editorial - July Issue

Research - Figuring out the designers and brands that would actually send in products to the London office was a task. I went through British portals such as Harrods.com and Selfridges.com to guide me with the same.

Process - After the list was made, a mock up email was made as a sourcing request and send to over 30 accessory brands. After speaking with most of them, products were ordered from 17 of them and sent to the London office. The excel sheets were updated daily with the statu, along with return address and contacts for all the brands.

Learning - A huge international shoot was everything I expected it to be. Even though, I wasnt present at the shoot in London, I could feel the stress and was almost able to witness the action. Speaking to big brands and understanding how professional they are is a major take back.

The IT List AW 19/20 Brief - For an upcoming issue, my mentor wanted to list the “must have” products for AW 19/20. I was asked to create an “IT” list that featured the best of the season’s products for the same.

Research - I went through various blogs and read articles by Vogue. com and Vogue.uk to understand the trending products. To find the products, I went through various e-commerce websites.

Process - First, I understood the products and what’s in trend. Then, I made my first draft of a list, after which I started to look for suitable products with captions and gave preference to advertisers.

Learning - This project required a lot of research and a thourough understanding of AW 19/20 trends. It helped me understand how to make a list and write concise captions for the same.

“When Fall 2019 arrives, the women of the world will be wearing sharp suiting with a feminine edge and gothically lovely dresses. But what about their shoes and bags? The plus-ones to the season’s best outfits have an equally polished attitude.

With barely a sneaker in sight, the runways were populated by bourgeois clasp bags, embellished kitten heels, and killer platform boots that complemented the ready-to-wear’s more personal, discreet mood.

But it’s not all serious business in the accessories department. Thanks to Jeremy Scott at Moschino and the late Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel, there is a strand of unbridled fun running through the season’s most memorable bags. Scott made them in the shapes of slot machines and washing machines, while Lagerfeld turned a ski gondola into the must-have cross-body from his swan song at Chanel.

Vogue Shops - Skirt Suits Brief - Vogue Shops is a 2-3 page guide on a particular trend and how one can shop it and wear it. The brief was to research on the trend in depth and figure out an intertesting way to show it in 3 pages. I had to compile all my research and forward it to the design head, Ms. Snigdha Kulkarni.

Research - Along with an in depth study on skirt suits, various products were listed from advertisers and other brands. I went through all major online retailers and listed over a hundred products.

Process - After the research, mails were sent to the editors for their feedback. The products were first finalised, then a credits list was made and finally, the spreads were designed.

Learning - I have always seen the Vogue Shops as an exciting feature in the magazine. Experiencing what actually goes behind making the trend come to life was definately a highlight.

After decades in the wilderness, the skirt suit is back. At Louis Vuitton, it came with nipped-in, embellished jackets, while Gucci’s was worn slacker-sized, as if scored in a thrift store two sizes too big. At Moschino, it was Jackie Kennedy perky, complete with pillbox hat and – occasionally – a model with a blue face (designer Jeremy Scott, in his wisdom, imagined that Jackie was an alien for AW18). At Erdem, the muse was Adele Astaire, giving rise to an old school tweedy elegance, while Christian Dior’s were checked and a bit beatnik. Eudon Choi’s had a Thatcherapproved double-breasted jacket, while Calvin Klein’s were deconstructed, asymmetric and fashion-complicated.

It makes sense that Chanel excels at the skirt suit trend, this season updating the house’s classic tweed suits with sweaters tied around models’ necks. Coco Chanel, after all, brought skirt suits back into fashion when she relaunched her label in 1953, modelling them herself with strands of pearls and a lazy cigarette at her Rue Cambon atelier. Skirt suits swiftly became a worldwide status symbol that spoke of blue-chip Parisian glamour and a modern, pulled-together woman who had graduated beyond frou frou dresses.

Skirt suits have long been freighted with meaning. In the 30s and 40s, they became the uniform of film noir’s tough broads. Lauren Bacall seduced Bogie in The Big Sleep wearing a skirt suit, while Barbara Stanwyck wore them to carry out her dastardly plan in Double Indemnity. Hitchcock loved them – Marlene Dietrich wore them in Stage Fright, in 1950, while Tippi Hedren was in a skirt suit when she fought off The Birds. Skirt suits can be chipper – when worn by Cher Horowitz in 1995’s Clueless – or part of the darkest moments in history. When Jackie Kennedy wore a pink Chanel-like skirt suit when her husband was assassinated in Dallas in 1963, images of her wearing it, splattered in blood, were beamed around the world.

The skirt suit will, of course, for ever be associated with the 80s. When it became the uniform of the career woman, power-dressing her way into the boardroom. Their icon was Margaret Thatcher, a female anomaly on the political stage, negotiating the scrutiny of the public eye in pearls, that handbag, a Tory blue skirt suit and – to paraphrase Working Girl’s skirt suit wearer Tess McGill – “serious hair.

Straight talking trouser suiting ruled the autumn/winter 2017 runways – so much so that it was almost easy to miss the humble skirt suit, as seen at Prada, Bottega Veneta and Tibi. With back-to-work dressing a wardrobe priority, it’s the smart transitional skirt suit that will make sliding from holiday to office mode that little bit easier. Yep, they’ve shaken off their studious pretensions; instead, the cropped mini skirt and oversized jacket semaphores sass (and presents summer’s gently fading but still sun-kissed skin). Longer lengths have their charms, too, especially when slit up to there. Still unsure about the styling? The two-piece made famous by Coco Chanel is actually a lot more versatile than you think. Take it straight – like Jackie O, but with knee high boots that add edge – or street, and reminiscent of Cher in Clueless. This time around skip the pop socks – they’re a step too far for corporate life – but a Helmut Lang two-piece teamed with a white T-shirt is the update that reads fresh rather than ladies-who-lunch.

Process - After understanding the trend, I used Net-a-porter and Farfetch to find neon products from AW 19/20.

Learning - This report helped me brush up my online sourcing skills and have a I deep understanding of international e-commerce websites.

The AW 2019 catwalks saw several retro trends re-emerge. There were tie-dye cycling shorts and shoulder padded power suits, but the one eighties trend that there really was no escaping from was neon.

Fluorescent shades already hit the fashion scene last year, hitting micro-trend status largely thanks to the Kardashians. But, those of us who thought the in-your-face look was nothing more than a passing Instagram trend are about to be proven wrong.

The SS19 catwalks of New York, London, Milan and Paris confidently championed lime green, blinding yellow, extra hot pink and flame orange.

Proving that the trend is going to be sticking around for quite some time.

Fashion Advertisers List SS19 Brief - Create an excel sheet that grades the advertisers at Vogue according to their spending. The ranks have to be from A++ to D. Research - I worked with Vogue’s advertsing team and created various lists to understand the different segregations of high street, indian luxury and luxury.

Process - After understanding how much one brand spends, they were ranked and put into 3 such lists.

Learning - This project actually made me understand the advertising department of the magazine and work with the business side of it.

The magazine’s main income is the advertising and the ranks help the editorial team understand who to give preference to.

It first merged as the colour du jour back in 2017, but right now, it’s on its way to becoming a thing of the past. There’s no reason to fret about the loss though, because thanks to the ever-changing moods of the industry, we already have a new hue to covet—millennial purple also called melodramatic purple. Autumn/winter 2019 runways saw some of the world’s leading designers including the colour in their lines. Celebrities have picked up on the trend and started favouring the hue. My Learning One of the major learnings that I have experienced this internship is to develop my personal design philosophy and fully explore it as a professional individual.

Another learning was in broadening my horizons in terms of utilizing all means of research techniques accessible to me – from websites like ASOS and WGSN, to magazines like Vogue and GQ, amidst a wide variety of options.

Where fashion comes and goes in the blink of an eye, it is highly imperative to hone your skills to be as quick as you can if you want to keep up. I learnt to do the same by executing important tasks and decisions enforced upon me by completing them dutifully and with great fervor.

Team engagement is an important characteristic that always needs to be worked upon, especially in the corporate culture. I learned to cooperate and appreciate with my colleagues’ and tea mates’ perspectives and work in accordance with them.

The one thing that I improved upon in my time working, was performing all my tasks in a systematic and professional manner, and using my logical and creative abilities to the best of my capabilities to present any work given to me.

Exploring is a very important part of the academic process, and gaining a work experience is a great way for students like us, to acquaint ourselves with a field that we are looking to learn about.

After working in publishing and with such a well-established company like Vogue, I realized that I too wanted to work in the editorial world post graduation.

Also another final decision that I came up with was of adopting the career path of becoming a stylist. It’s a great creative position and with all the learning that I have experienced in my time in this internship, I know what to expect of this job.

It’s an extremely versatile position where you can delve into styling, photography, direction, and graphic designing. That is something that I feel I can do very well and have a major interest in.

There were a number of different things that had significant relevance to the Fashion Communication course that we have learnt over the past three years.

For instance, all the photoshoots that I did with my mentor, where I played the role of an assistant, all my learnings from our photography course with Mr. Vishesh Azad helped in this. But most of hat really helped me in this entire internship, were my teachings in one of my favorite course modules so far - Graphic Design taught

by Mrs. Dimple Bahl. Her ideas and teachings in how to modify and execute your imagination into reality through graphics was a big help, when I had to create styling mood boards and look boards.

All in all, my teachings at NIFT helped me to travel through my journey at my internship successfully and with great ease.
