ABSTRACT

This project started as exploring various innovative methods to create doodles and then use it as a technique for self introspection and communication. It would be a channel to let your thoughts out, a method for mind mapping, helping in learning and making visual maps. It also aims at providing a collaborative graphical chat space. To use this non –verbal method of communication to create new graphics, explore new ideas and share thoughts. This system would be a tool for mapping inner space, and creating visuals for both communication and for personal reflection. Hence it aimed at exploring and finding the use of doodling to its full extent, and be able to use it as a useful, efficient and at the same time a fun tool for learning and thinking and being creative. However, as the project and research progressed further , the focus of the project completely changed and was now more about exploring the purpose of doodles ,how one could organize and make use of them in a an innovative e and creative manner. Majorly be able to use it as an ideation plat form. The word pitara is used as a signifier, signifying a box (pitara) full of ideas (thoughts). This project resulted in doodle pitara, a social networking system around doodles allowing designers to connect with each other, get inspired and use the system as an ideation platform.

INTRODUCTION

Doodle is a type of sketch, an unfocused drawing made while a person's attention is otherwise occupied. They are simple drawings which can have a meaning, a shape or just irregular forms. It is well established that much of our creative expression is birthed in the subconscious mind. To use creative expression and solutions in your everyday life, it is necessary to dip into the subconscious at will. Doodling is one way of doing this. Doodling allows the unconscious to render in symbolic expression. Symbols have universal as well as personal meaning. When you are stuck for an answer to a problem or looking for creative innovation, the technique of doodling will unleash the hidden symbolic powers of the subconscious mind. A social network is a social structure made of nodes (which are generally individuals or organizations) that are tied by one or more specific types of interdependency, such as values, visions, ideas, financial exchange, friends, kinship, dislike, conflict, trade and web links. It provides a platform for people to connect, communicate, share and express themselves. This project revolves around finding purpose for doodles, how and why they can be used , exploit this information use to it build around a social networking application online.

AIMS and OBJECTIVES

This project aims at exploring innovative methods to use doodling as a technique for self introspection and communication. It also aims at exploring and finding the use of doodling to its full extent, and be able to use it as a useful, efficient and at the same time a fun tool for learning and thinking and being creative.

ALL ABOUT DOODLE Stage 1 Literature review Etymology The word doodle first appeared in the early seventeenth century to mean a fool or simpleton, and is thought to derive from the Low German dudeltopf, meaning "fool" or "simpleton". This is the meaning meant in the song "Yankee Doodle", originally sung by British colonial troops prior to the American Revolutionary War. This is also the origin of the early eighteenth century verb to doodle, meaning "to swindle or to make a fool of". The modern meaning emerged in the 1930s either from this meaning or from the verb "to dawdle", which since the seventeenth century has had the meaning of wasting time or being lazy. In the movie "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town" Mr. Deeds mentions that "doodle" was a word made up to describe scribbling to help a person think. Doodling Basics Doodling is accomplished during mindless sketching or aimless drawing while the doodler's attention is focused elsewhere. The abstract formulations may develop as a means to overcome stress during a disruptive or unnerving phone call. Children doodle in the classroom and adults doodle during lectures to escape boredom or perhaps to think independently from the lecturer. What does this entire doodling mean, and how can absent‐minded doodling lead to success? , is that what needs to be explored.

6

A doodle is a scribble or full‐blown pictorial drawing created during a period of "no

mind." Doodling is actually a component of hand‐writing analysis, in the study of graphology. It is true that a picture paints a thousand words, and that fully applies to doodling, perhaps more so. Graphology enables us to perform a depiction of character and to analyze personalities. The act of doodling often takes place while we are waiting for something unrelated to happen Doodling takes place rather spontaneously, on any handy surface, and in any available manner. The doodle might be created when a child uses a finger to sketch lines in the condensation of a window. It happens whenever the urge takes us over and there is an available implement and medium. We may have a favored doodle that we create repeatedly. Typically a doodle is created in relation to an emotion such as fear, disgust, anger, and so on. The act of doodling releases the emotional tension. Doing something physical while wrestling with a mental concern, can be a form of stress reduction. Even those who do not doodle as a rule, will exhibit some other form of behavior or physical habit. Doodling does not always connote anxiety. It often reveals a show of humor or enlightenment. The doodler may possess an adventurous spirit. There are an abundance of different types of Doodles, ranging from retracing letters in a written or printed text to complex and three‐dimensional drawings, via a variety of idle scribbling. The process of doodling appears to only be a partially conscious one. Not once does it appear that the pen takes on a life of its own, and the "artist" himself is surprised by the results. One generally indulges in doodling while one's mind is on something else, rather than on the actual matter of doodling. People doodle in various situations ‐ for instance, in the course of telephone conversations, lectures, while compiling lists and making notes.

7

This was the basic understanding of doodling while researching over the internet and books. Keeping this background information in mind, now I conducted a survey and spoke to people and tried to gain their insights and develop my own understanding out of it about doodling.

Stage 2 My review Understanding the system When we talk about doodling and understanding its aspects the few basic questions which need to be answered are What is a doodle? Why do people doodle? And how do they doodle? I conducted a survey to find about the general notions of what people think about doodling, to understand the entire process of doodling. It did give some interesting and well also some expected answers, but yes it did help in gaining insight about the basic psyche of a doodler, which was crucial to take this project further. Note this survey was conducted primarily with people in creative fields (read designers),who I assumed would or doodle all the time. The result of this survey is compiled in the appendix of this document.

With all the data given ,discarding the repeated answers ,I ended up representing it as ,a visual map for the survey to understand the system better(of course this is one of the good points of doodling as I found out from survey, make your ideas concrete, represent them visually to make people understand :) ) 8

The visual maps are shown below.

VISUAL MAP TO CONSOLIDATE THE SURVEY FINDINGS (with a system’s point of view) This map serves to show in a visual representation, what is a doodle, why and when people doodle and how they do they doodle. A overview of the entire doodling process.

Brainstorming

Now the task was to brainstorm on all the data collected from the users, on what, why, when and how of doodle. As I initially began it became difficult to figure out where to 9

start, as all the data I had was descriptive and more of personal views of people. This is where I understood how personal the process of doodling is and how it means different for different people but yet is a part of almost everyone's life. So then, I decided to pick up words out of descriptive answers of what and why/when and categorize them to get a overview and answers, for my better understanding....

Descriptive data of user study

Selected data out of the descriptive data

10

Categorization of selected data

Now the task remains to even consolidate this data further and come up with minimalistic words to understand and extract the essence of this system better. The doodle understanding Based on the survey conducted, I did the analysis of the doodle system and came up with this depiction of the system, where almost (at least I hope) all the what’s, when, why, etc. of the doodling system will fall into. This was important as I find when developing my concept to keep coming back and provide me a platform to actually use doodling as a tool to serve many purposes. A sort of relation could now be developed on as to why and how a need or a technique to use doodling as tool for various purposes can be developed. These visuals are shown below. 11

Brainstorming sheet, exploring the aspects purpose essence and expectance out of doodles.

Doodle concept map 12

Concise depiction of the doodle system If we were to understand the difference between a doodle, a scribble and a sketch, it could be summarized like this. A doodle is basically a mindless sketch; they are random thoughts which may turn into aimless drawings. It’s casual and whimsical in nature. A scribble is also aimless drawing, but it’s more like careless writing and is generally done without ever lifting the drawing device of the paper. A sketch is a preliminary drawing of a composition, and is more of a conscious effort. Basically there is a very close relation between the three, but what makes it different from each other is because, the intent is different, the purpose is different.

EXPLORING DOODLING INTERFACES

Online sketch pad

Doodling interfaces

Provides a online sketch pad to draw, scribble or doodle. Features include several brush options, a wide selection of colors and the tools to create shapes and drawings.

Comment Nothing special to look for, an online version of MS paint software.

The doodle notebook Popularized on the tagline how to waste your time in the office. The doodle notebook works in four simple steps : Pick a squiggle, Choose your weapons, Draw your colleagues or the office beasts or the meeting's monsters, Upload to the Gallery for your chance to win £1000 of books, Send your masterpiece to a colleague.

Comment A interesting line to build on ,also the use of squiggles let’s user think less on what to doodle, though the freedom of doodling is curbed in a way.

Sketchswap "In Sketch Swap, you draw something on the screen, and when you're finished, you hit "Submit drawing"... to receive a random drawing from someone else".

14

Sketch swap is a web application that collects sketches from its users and swaps them with a fresh one. First the user needs to draw something then swap it for another drawing from the server.

Comment Amazing how a single sketch (assuming in the beginning there was a default sketch )and swap could scatter so fast).Neat interface though again I feel freedom of doodling is curbed here.

DoodleBug A complete website application to Doodle on‐line and watch others doodles. Also have competitions and a large community, hence allowing networking amongst them. Each user is sort of evaluated and advances on the basis of his credits and skill level.

Comment The concept is based more on marketing strategies, but seems to be working good. The only problem is now it has become more about doing a good sketch, than just doodling.

The box doodle The box doodle project rules are simple‐‐ Rearrange a box to make any kind of figure or object‐‐make the most of the least. A really simple concept with some really great work by independent artists just like you and I. They have a few pages of fun submissions,

15

as well as a cute flash based box doodle tool where you can create your own box online instead of with real materials. What can you do with a shoe box and a few markers?

Comment A very interesting project! on an interesting line of thought and about the online doodle box , it’s an interesting interface to see what all can people make put one particular shape, though again freedom of doodling is curbed here.

Doodle with veer Doodle with Veer is a little creative flash application that lets you scribble away on some different backgrounds.

Comment Allows you to doodle only with pen on very few backgrounds to choose from.

Desktop doodle Desktop Doodle is a desktop utility designed to help you to express yourself with absolute freedom. Enhanced features allow users to easily send quick drawing, to anyone, via the Internet. desktopDoodle provides a higher level of communication between people without having to use everyday practical tools such as pens, papers or complicated drawing applications.

Apart from these there are various other software products and interface available from simple software like Microsoft paint to adobe photoshop etc. Doodling in a chat space Various Chat messengers This has now become a common add on to a normal chat environment specially when yahoo and msn both have adopted it as an extra feature to the existing chat software.

16

Doodle by fabrica Doodle is a collaborative graphical chat space. The player has a white square to draw in, just like the notepad that gets filled with doodles during a business meeting. Once your doodle is finished you place it on the page with all the other doodles from around the world. Doodles can be published in a grid updated in real time, creating an instant group of images. Players can also modify other players’ doodles, sharing little snapshots of creativity.

Comment A very nice exploration of doodling with a excellent interface.

Doodle in text documents Allowing users to create 2‐dimensional ideograms directly in text documents, software combines Western alphabet‐based languages and Asian character‐based languages. Virtual keypad lets user choose and place each pictograph in space in text that shows up in Word document. Pictographs can be edited using arrow keys, delete, and backspace. Program comes with 5 sets of Squawk doodling fonts, each with its own suite of categorized pictographs. The software works by giving the writer a virtual keypad that appears on the computer screen. The keypad is all that a user needs to access and use sets of pictographs to build two‐ dimensional doodles and picture stories. The keypad lets the user choose and place each pictograph in a space in the text that shows up in the writer's Word document. The writer creates the story with as many or as few pictographs as he or she wants. The writer can also edit the pictographs the way regular text is edited, using the arrow keys, delete and backspace. And, a writer can string any number of these two‐dimensional ideograms in sequence to create a longer story or convey more information. Each ideogram can be uniquely created, colored and formatted.

Comment A great exploration of Doodling as a language, specially cause of its universal appeal.

17

Collaborative doodling Web canvas WebCanvas is a world‐wide collaborative painting project where anyone can paint and watch others painting. Interesting thing about this product is you can go to specific locations and doodle, sketch or paint. In this site anyone with a modern web‐browser can move around an 'infinite' canvas. Using available painting tools is its also possible to draw and upload images. Furthermore it is possible to view other users painting if they happen to be painting within the same viewing area.

Comment It’s an interesting exploration resulting in huge graffiti walls sort of images, the unique part is that you paint in specific locations .The question is how useful it is?

Doodle board Allows you to choose a board and click "open board" to switch to it. Click "new board" to create a new private board and use the html link to share the selected board. Also boards can be made private by adding a password to it.

Comment Personally I think I'll stick to pen and paper, becomes chaotic and doesn’t provide a simplistic interface.

18

SwarmSketch SwarmSketch is an ongoing online canvas that explores the possibilities of distributed design by the masses. Each week it randomly chooses a popular search term which becomes the sketch subject for the week.. A new sketch begins after one week, or after the previous sketch reaches one thousand lines, whichever comes first. Each user can contribute a small amount of line per visit, then they are given the opportunity to vote on the opacity of lines submitted by other users. By voting, users moderate the input of other users, judging the quality of each line. The darkness of each line is the average of all its previous votes.

Comment The idea is great but just results in a lot of scribbles than exploring the possibilities of distributed design.

Imagination cubed It’s a multi‐user online whiteboards. The cool thing about sets it apart from other similar tools is the fact that there are no accounts, and therefore, you never have to go out of your way to make sure your friends and co‐workers are registered. Simply visit the site and invite up to 2 other people to simultaneously use your white board. The application is very easy to work with and needs no login or registration to use. In my

19

opinion, the best feature is the automatic replay of your whiteboard presentation when you send it through e‐mail to someone.

Comment It’s made in a unique manner, with easy to use interface, but doesn’t have an eraser and again limits the possibility of a neat drawn board with people doodling together, though keeping a limit on invites is a good thing .

Doodle recognition

InkKit

It’s a sketch‐recognition software turning doodles into website.A software tool for tablet computers can transform sketched web pages into real ones and hand‐drawn code into real programs. The tool, known as InkKit, was created to provide a smooth transition between early sketches and more polished designs. It lets designers sketch a webpage, for example, on a tablet computer using a stylus. Providing they follow a set of basic rules, it can then transform this sketch into a neater version with interactive features.

Comment "People usually use paper when generating ideas and then have to transcribe them onto a computer when they are more fixed." Electronic tools are great for the later stages of design, but they restrict your ideas at early stages. So it’s a great tool in that perspective.

20

Doodling used for authentication The technology for authentication purpose now exists and explores the use of personalized hand‐drawn "doodles" for recall and management of password information. Since doodles can be easier to remember than text passwords, the cognitive load on the user is reduced. Method involves recognizing doodles by matching them against stored prototypes using handwritten shape matching techniques. A system has been built which manages passwords for web applications through a web browser. In this system, the user logs into a web application by drawing a doodle using a touchpad or digitizing tablet attached to the computer. The user is automatically logged into the web application if the doodle matches the doodle drawn during enrollment. Developers also report accuracy results for their doodle recognition system. Doodle based password management systems can potentially overcome the limitations of text and biometric based password management systems. Furthermore, with touch screens, touch pads and other pen/touch input devices becoming more common on client devices, the hardware cost factor in using doodles for password management is becoming a non‐issue.

Comment Extracting, the essence of doodling that it’s unique to everyone to its best. Definitely, a technology to look forward to for mainstream purposes in the near future.

Doodling in search engines

3D‐Seek search engine

"3D‐Seek is a new kind of search engine that lets users find items in an online catalog without knowing the items' names, part numbers, or keywords. All the user needs is a freehand sketch. The 3D‐Seek catalog currently contains more than 6,000 parts and continues to grow as suppliers manually upload their files or as the system's i‐crawler Web spider discovers parts online.

Comment

Looking forward to it’s mainstream application

THE THOUGHT PROCESS

THE BEGINING STAGE State: excited The thought process started as soon as I started researching, reading and conducting a user study. It was a new domain for me to explore and I found various design opportunities revolving around it. The user study kept continuing in forms of observations, contextual inquiries and questionnaire. Also at this point I started visiting blogs, and created my own at http://p‐i‐t‐a‐r‐ a.blogspot.com/ to get feedback from people and their point of view on this project. Well, the survey conducted resulted in various interesting results as the answers were in descriptive format. THE MIDDLE STAGE PART 1 State: very excited With all the results it did open, and gave a lot of ideas of what people could do with doodling Or rather make people do with doodling. Basically sort of creative games!!!, which I came up with. Now, I intended to do a desktop application , sort of Microsoft one note where u get to organize your notebook, here u get to select the sort of paper u want to doodle on say newspaper print, cursive handwriting notebooks, diaries, decorative papers, magazines, sand (if u doodle on this, it can’t be saved)and so on. Basically trying to create the

22

experience of doodling and an interface to just doodle. A preview is shown of the same is shown below.

Apart from this you could go online and doodle. There were a lot of ideas when using the online feature but I personally wanted to do the following 5: Concept 1: Pictionary doodling 1 player doodles, the other one guesses in certain defined time and then the second player doodles and the 1st player guesses. A score card can be maintained.

Use: it helps u know how good you are in a visual representation.

23

Concept 2: Collaborative doodling This would be a maximum of 4 player game, where turn by turn players doodle on a same paper making it a single graphic element. Here, u can choose the paper u want doodle on or upload a file (background image) on which you want to doodle on.

Use: well u can create more creative graphics!! with more explorations of different style on it.

Concept 3: Theme doodling You can join a ongoing theme (topic) to doodle on. All doodlers will doodle on one particular theme. One is allowed to start their theme and doodle on it.

Use: can be used for ideation purposes.

Concept 4: Music doodling You can select a track (a song or a music piece) to doodle on. All doodlers will doodle on one particular track. Hence you’ll be able to see how everyone doodles on the same track, a sort of a music and art 24

relationship, like what people think when they hear a particular track. One is allowed to upload their track and doodle on it. Use: well doodling on music is supposed to be a creative exercise to free your mind. Concept 5: Story boarding You can make stories(movies) out of your doodles by recording your voice along with your doodles(while you are doodling also), while you doodle start recording ,pause, record, draw, then record etc to create a sort of animation, a story in your own innovative way. Use: story telling!!!! Duh.!

THE MIDDLE STAGE PART 2 State: excited

All this while a major issue was in my head that I am making people doodle on a comp, or even on separate product, is it feasible? I mean why people would doodle at all otherwise. Away from paper they would spend only 30% of the time on a comp or any other interface (if I was to think it as a diff product). SO NOW THE ISSUE WAS, whether this will lead to any software based solution that could truly contain the meaning of doodling. The moment you tend to introduce traditional UI elements to such a problem, it brings a lot of consciousness also from the user and that may defeat the purpose of doodling. 25

So from now on the focus was changed, doodling concept well would be best if remained on pen and paper. From this point on I targeted designers (read creative people) as the user group. Since my entire user study was also based on them. I now propose to use the livescribe technology, and develop a web application for it.

This application would be a part of the livescribe online community.

Details of the technology are here, The Livescribe smartpen revolutionizes the act of writing by recording and linking audio to what you put on paper. Tap on words or drawings in your notes, and the smartpen replays recorded audio from the time you were writing. Transfer notes to your PC to backup, replay, and share them online. Essentially it records what you’re listening to and notes what you write and when you write it. So if you click on a line of your notes, you’ll hear what the professor was saying at the time you wrote it. Of course, you can also rewind, fast forward, speed up and slow down. 26

You can email the notes and audio, record and upload drawings, and much more. It does seem to use special paper, but it says on the website that the notebooks will cost about the same as a standard notebook.

Keeping this technology in mind, now I propose a web application to handle all your saved doodles and basically solve a purpose for the designers to be using them. The basic purpose of a doodle for a designer is ideation. Hence I develop this application as an Ideation platform. A designer, needs to 1. ideate , trigger ideas 2. make sure what he represents on paper is understood, after all that’s why he’s representing 3. build iterations, or explore on his concepts Keeping all this in mind; I now propose the following application. Exploration were done on paper, then a quick mock up was build to get user’s feedback on such a product.

Note: Only few screenshots have been made at this stage. Keeping certain heuristics points in mind, also this is not the final thing, just a quick mock up; u may find a lot of elements missing. 27

Home page

My doodles link is where you organize your doodles, i.e. your own doodle pitara. Doodle pitara link is where the option of 3 concepts(for now) will be available which will be connecting ideas, making sense, building ideas(the names will be changed). Doodlers link is where you view doodlers profile and view their doodles maybe drop them a mail. Doodles i love link is where all your bookmarked doodles will be available for view. Symbols link is where all your tagged symbols and symbols tagged by others can be viewed. Symbols as in say a face is drawn,it is a smiley for you. Help link is well help.!!!!!!

28

Allows tagging in Portion of images

Click and view the doodles.

MY DOODLES This page basically helps in categorizing, adding titles, description, tagging in short basically organizing your doodles. Next we go to, DOODLE PITARA This page preview is not available; from here we click on CONNECTING IDEA links which would look like the screen below. After clicking on connect ideas it would show all the doodles tagged with idea bulb in a connected form. The navigation part remains the same. The preview of my ideas page is available. 29

My ideas page

Based on how many times the doodle has been guessed correctly

After guessing, it would show what doodler thinks about the doodle on left pane and what others who have guessed the doodle think about the doodle in the bottom pane, the bigger the font size more time that word has been guessed.

32

IDEAS TO BUILD PAGE

Here the idea is to build over your ideas basically get reviews in the form of comments. How it works? You can specify on your doodle firstly, what’s the idea you are talking about? Then, specify the time this doodle will stay with a doodler and the time for it to reach back to you. Then click on the button send .the system randomly send this doodle to another doodler who can add a comment, doodle a comment, review the other comments made and then forward it further or send it back to you. I n any case the doodle will reach back to you in the time specified by you. In the next screen, Ideas I have received Inbox specifies the ideas like in mail ordered by date and would also indicate the no. Of comments added to it which can be viewed in the navigation below around the doodle. From here the doodler can forward it or send it back. Ideas I have received page

34

THE ENDING STAGE State: excitement minimal With current line of thought, though in this concept everything is justified clearly and valid!! As to why and how, But the result is more like another social networking site. The initial excitement was sort of lost in the process. But ,making doodle interfaces , would server no particular purpose as there are so many available, most of them may not be efficient but if someone really needed to doodle he/she will do it on his computer as well in Microsoft paint etc. Or their tablets and other touch screen devices. The need was to share and communicate these doodles. As I came across many people were just blogging to do so, or maximum would upload and their doodles reviewed or commented upon there was no other way to actual connect these doodles together and make use of it . There were certain questions which I thought needed to be addressed at this stage, Do you think not allowing, people to actually doodle in the system is actually a write thing to do? Or is it possible to add the earlier thought concepts as a games link in this system? Then what about the scope of the system? Or well think of it a totally different point of view and well come up with a different outlook altogether? Also, what about pattern recognition and doodle analysis? How and where do you think such a thing could be added? Hence, trying to address certain issues like this, I came to a conclusion not everything can be justified in its true sense. As my guide rightly, mentioned there is no black or white, it’s the in between gradients you choose from. This by far has been my most important learning throughout the process. 35

THE FINAL CONCEPT

Social Networking around doodles

This network seeks to provide a platform for designers (people in creative fields) to use it as an ideation platform and use the possibilities of doodles as a mind tool in the best possible extent. As all social networks seek, primarily this too is intended to serve as an application to connect people. But the uniqueness of this project would be that the networking is based only around doodling, and would just not be a site for registration, uploading or drawing and their reviewing. It would allow people to trigger ideas, get inspired and connect in a completely new way, based around their doodles. Currently, there are two popular networks existing mydrawings and isketch using drawings or doodling , and networking around them exclusively.(places like deviant art etc are ignored as they are developed more as portfolio sites) What is iScribble?

iScribble is an online drawing site where multiple people from all over the world can work on a drawing at the same time. Our interactive canvases allow users to draw pictures using a mouse or graphic tablet. Finished drawings can be published to our gallery where they are commented and rated by the users in our community. iScribble is a great place for beginners to learn drawing but also features advanced drawing tools for more demanding users. Comment It’s like Microsoft paint online , the gallery consists more of photographs than drawings. Also, users are mainly using it as gallery not really for making drawings. 36

What is mydrawings? For the artist inside you that is screaming to get out, let him loose on MyDrawings, a site for people who love to doodle. You have to register to participate but it's free and takes two seconds. The idea is that the site is a virtual canvas where anyone can make drawings and share them instantly. You create a user profile and you can make friends in the network. Each doodle gets a rating which makes it more visible on the site. Also check out the World Canvas, a myriad collection of drawings from the site users, made into a patchwork blanket kind of thing. It's a fun site that you and your artist friends could use to show each other ideas for projects. Comment Its drawing interface is not so great! The gallery consists more of photographs than drawings. Though the concept of world canvas is interesting placing each artist’s drawing in a grid in the entire canvas. The resultant drawings look extremely digitized making it less related to the natural environment.

Hence, I propose a social networking web application which would essentially maintain the essence of doodles, and try and use it as an innovative way to connect to people. This site would essentially be based on the following concepts: I propose a product with this application , a Smartpen and a dotted notebook. Smartpen technology. Key features: Hardware Product Design: Sleek ergonomic design with anodized aluminum housing Charcoal blue with silver band & black accents. Processor: Samsung ARM 9 (32‐bit, 150 MHz) Screen: 96x18 OLED Display

37

Technology: Doodle recognition and pattern recognition. Camera: High speed infrared camera (over 70 images/sec) Storage: 1GB NAND (over 16,000 pages of digital notes) 2GB NAND (over 32,000 pages of digital notes) Battery: 300 mAH rechargeable lithium (non‐removable) PC Connectivity: USB Mobile Charging Cradle Online Community Web Apps & Services: Community for posting and sharing content Platform System Software: Paper‐Based Computing Platform and Java Development Environment Development Tools: Content Development Kit (CDK) ‐ 1H 2008 Software Development Kit (SDK) ‐ 2H 2008 Online Application Workshop ‐ 2H 2008 Dot Paper: Interactive Dot Enabled Paper with Dot Positioning System (DPS)

Cost : $ 150- $200 Usage of the product This product seeks to be of usage in similar fashion as a normal notebook and a pen. Hence, the user is required to doodle as he normally would on a paper with the drawing device as the smartpen. It would analyze and record patterns of your doodling by ink recognition and comparison with your previous drawn doodles. It shall also calculate the pressure applied by using the pen and the stroke style. Livescribe has created a new mobile computing platform – an integrated system of smartpen, dot paper, applications, desktop software, and development tools. Based on this existing technology , this smartpen is proposed and an application for online web community is designed. 38

The application would be a part of the online community and will be based on the following concepts: Concept 1 DEVELOPING YOUR OWN LANGUAGE AS YOU ARE DOODLING Consider the two scenarios, when doodling, ‐

Go beyond obvious representations, let’s say you thinking of the emotion “happy ”, your subconscious will have it’s own version which might not be a smiley 

Completely ignoring aesthetics, and keep only self representation. This may come from being only spontaneous about (the first thing that hits your head is on paper)

Whatever you doodle, eventually you end up developing your representations of words, these are symbols which conveys your meaning. Hence may differ from person to person. This application helps one develop a personal set of symbols by merely, allowing them to recognize it in their doodle and also compare it with other people’s representation of the same word. 39

The working of this concept is shown.

Concept 2 CONNECTING IDEAS!!

Above process flow , indicates the various phases of the creative process. This concept tries to explore a concept , whereby the user can get this sort of creative process flowing.Allowing the user to use his generated ideas to connect to similar ideas generated by other people hence, allowing to associate freely with them.then the user can view all these ideas get inspired and review his own.In a way it would help user conceptualize furthur on their doodles ideas.

41

Concept 3 MOOD GRID Sometimes our emotions and responsibilities can make us feel as if we’re lost in a storm. Doodling enables us to create a calm focal point in the middle of a chaos. It is a profound way to sort through thoughts and feelings. One can use comparisons and contrast in doodles to weigh decisions, analyze situations or current events, or look for similarities and differences. The Mood grid, with its network of many colorful grids, is designed to echo the thoughts of the human world. Seen from afar, Mood grid presents a number of individual tiles, each colored according to the person’s emotions and feelings, proclaiming its own emotional moment in life. At this level, Mood grid presents a bird's eye view of humanity – like looking at it as a consolidated view of lot of emotions, happy, sad, calm, jealous, angry etc. However, once a grid is clicked, it flips into its constituent thoughts, i.e. the doodle which depicts the thoughts of the individual at that moment of his life, going through a particular emotion, and that tile becomes the center of attention. At this moment, the viewer sees the open sentence as the only one that matters. Like people first seen from afar and then encountered in person, the flipped grids attain an individuality and depth of character that is striking when compared to their relative insignificance in the grid view. 42

Concept 4 IDEAS TO BUILD Whether sketched on a legal pad or drawn on a whiteboard, a doodle has the power to humanize the abstract and simplify the complex. It’s a way to add humor into a dry topic. The most appealing thing about doodling is that it is a universal language. Taking this in consideration also, the need of a designer to build ideas this concept is made. To let them get reviewed their base concepts which are in form of doodles, and get an opinion from random people, to help them rethink and iterate on it. It combines the concept of conceptualization and brainstorming using doodles in an innovative way.

In this system, the user specifies the time period the doodle stays with the other person and the time period in which the doodler expects the doodle back. The doodle is forwarded from one person to another, reviewed and sent back to the doodler in the specified time. 43

Concept 5 MAKE SENSE For a designer, it’s crucial to make sure what he represents on paper in the form of his doodles also that it is understood, after all that's why he's representing them and trying to put them on paper to gain clarity . Hence this concept is trying to bridge the gap between what doodlers think of their doodles and what people interpret it as. Based on the concept of Pictionary game, this system allows people to guess the meaning and interpretation of your doodles.

Based on the number of time the doodle is guesses correctly, a doodle understanding is developed which may vary from being strong, moderate or low. A comparison of the doodle guesses is conveyed with the help of tag clouds, as shown in the next screen . 44

Concept 6 CONNECTING PEOPLE by knowing them (based on their personalities) This system essentially will work on the basis doodle analysis, which works in similar fashion as handwriting analysis and would pick certain elements of the doodler and automatically generate, a profile after say a particular amount of finished doodles on the notebook. Such doodle recognition technology is proposed in the smartpen . This space would essentially try and group similar profiles together, tracking the patterns drawn by the doodler, the pressure and the stroke style of the pen, it would generate a self‐description and style of doodling for the doodler. The interface would use tag clouds to display the analysis. The working is represented in the following screens. 45

Connect people page

Click and select a tag in the space on the left side, people with similar tags on their doodle analysis or doodle style tag cloud will be displayed

Clicking on the person’s would lead you that person’s doodle pitara profile. Apart from these features, one can view a doodler’s profile through the doodler’s page depicted in the following screenshots. 46

Doodler’s page.

Doodler’s pitara page.

A link to doodles I love i.e user’s bookmarked doodles and the doodle gallery is provided. The doodle pitara page has the link to the various concepts the system is primarily developed on. 47

In the home page, the pictures that you see at the top of this page are symbols that have been tagged by the doodlers registered here, that start with the letters D‐O‐O‐D‐L‐E, displaying a new set each day. Also, the most viewed doodle of the previous day will be displayed.

In the doodle pitara page, various links are provided to navigate to other pages. Also, one of the popular doodles from the web is displayed.

48

A overall interaction system was figured out, and I tried to put it all together in a page to show the interaction and navigation around it, as shown below; subsequent to this final iterations were made for the final design. MY DOODLES

CERTAIN HUERISTIC PRINCIPLES THAT ARE FOLLOWED Visibility of system status The system should always keep users informed about what is going on, through appropriate feedback with reasonable time.

Match between system and the real world The system should speak the user’s language with words, phrases and concepts familiar to the user, rather than system‐oriented terms. Follow real‐world conventions, making information appear in a natural and logical order. As far as possible, such a mapping was established. With the usage of words such as doodles I love, my doodles etc. The system seeks to make it easier for the user to understand and relate to.Thus, trying to make the system navigation simple and easy for the user. Also, an attempt is made to make information appear in the best possible way in the given time constraints to appear natural and in logical order. User control and freedom Users often choose system functions by mistake and will need a clearly marked ‘emergency exit’ to leave the unwanted state without having to go through an extended dialogue. 50

Consistency and standards Users should not have to wonder whether different words, situations, or actions mean the same thing. Follow platform conventions. As much as possible an attempt to follow consistency and standards has been made, in order to avoid getting the user confused. This has been done in terms of the basic framework of the entire system also. Recognition rather than recall Minimize the user's memory load by making objects, actions, and options visible. The user should not have to remember information from one part of the dialogue to another. Instructions for use of the system should be visible or easily retrievable whenever appropriate. Keeping this aspect in mind, the colours have been used in the system indicating the pages being visited, helping the user in recognition. Instructions for use of the system are visible and easily retrievable whenever appropriate.

Aesthetic and minimalistic design Dialogues should not contain information which is irrelevant or rarely needed. Every extra unit of information in a dialogue competes with the relevant units of information and diminishes their relative visibility. Keeping this factor in mind, minimum required information is provided .Also; the interfaces are designed keeping a minimalistic design approach in mind. Best is done to avoid clutter and still provide all the relevant information.

CONCLUSION

As the project progressed, I realized that a software based solution that could truly contain the meaning of doodling is difficult to provide. The moment you tend to introduce traditional UI elements to such a problem, it brings a lot of consciousness also from the user and that may defeat the purpose of doodling. Hence, trying to address certain issues like this, I came to a conclusion not everything can be justified in its true sense. As my guide rightly mentioned, there is no black or white, it’s the gradients you choose from, even if you feel, at times, that the choice is not right. There shall always remain some issues to be addressed. This, by far, has been my most important learning throughout the process. Hence, this network seeks to provide a platform for designers to use it as an ideation platform and use the possibilities of doodles as a mind tool to the best possible extent. As all social networks seek, primarily this too is intended to serve as an application to connect people. But the uniqueness of this project would be that the networking is based only around doodling, and would not be just a site for registration, uploading, drawing and reviewing. It would allow people to trigger ideas, get inspired and connect in a completely new way, based around their doodles.

APPENDIX User study data WHAT IS A DOODLE TO YOU?

A method of relieving stress, overcoming boredom. I think a doodle is a pictorial representation of the random thoughts and musings of the mind. For instance if a person is talking on the phone and complete concentration is not required for the function at that time ,the random thoughts of shapes and words come out on paper. just you and your pen doodle is timepass or maybe not. doodle is lectures when it gets BORING (notice the all caps), phone calls, general bakwaas, everything and everywhere. i LOVE it!! :) sometimes doodling is just scribbling n think afterwards to get ideas, sometimes its depicting ideas using visuals to elaborate them, have a clearer view scribble...anything meaningul mostly meaningless..random stuff and make some sense out of it Doodling for me is an expression of my subconcious mind, which is not at all intentional. doodle is the medium of expression. doodle also tells about the person's thinking, attributes, nature. lot of information about a person can be known from looking at his doodles. When you stop sketching consciously and the sketch takes over you, it is doodling. random ideas that just pop up/ story clips/ sketches images out of lines and dots quick thoughts on paper...as they say hand‐eye co‐ordination...doodle is mind speaks hand does. its an informal and rather personal way of giving physical form to what exists in ur head

53

Doodle is subconscious sketching. means of unwinding and expressing random thoughts.. yeah ideation. The first step towards realizing and making concrete your ideas. Expressing ones thoughts in the form of figures not knowingly. Method of not focused expression. flow of thought expression which language cannot capture, bring out subconscious feelings/thoughts expression of blankness doodling is not all about scribbling with out any focus. upto some point of time focus has to be there like u know, wat a colour is gonna come on ur garment, in this colour and garment(focus)other thing scribbles. Its an exploration or cogitating of ideas initializing my brain for ideas. sometimes even shrugging off the tension/negative thoughts. expressing the subconcious feelings. doodle usually help to clear your state of mind. sometimes just for fun time pass... at times to put thoughts on paper... so that one can remember it in future... first thoughts on paper seemingly random thought on paper Communication of creation(s), Description of situation(s) its letting your hand form the picture and the mind taking a back seat. is an idea... is an expression... is a scribble drawings or scribbles that flow with a person's chain of thought and depict his/hes state of mind. eg. doodling closed shapes like squares show a restricted thinking pattern while spirals show confusion, and doodling flowers shows a desire for love.

54

Doodle for me is like a random set of lines which does not exactly have a sense or meaning attached to it (if done generally) but it helps in visualization and figuring out stuff and times gives us great ideas and concepts. It also helps me in increasing my concentration. scribbling what's on our mind ink on paper Rhymes with poodle and it’s a cute and trendy word i do it to keep myself busy to me its an expression of what all goes through in my subconscious mind otherwise. I guess its an action which encourages the thought process , it has surely got some connection with soul. it makes you realise that you are lonely and very much connected with self .it makes you feel creative or can say its depiction of your creativity. Its a state of mind ,the moment ,an extention of myself ,an appeal ,my silent need to be heard ,my silent need to be remembered ,my alterego ,my hidden desires ,my hidden regrets ,It is what I was....and who I am.But most importantly Its who I'm becoming. A doodle is the child of a highly potent mind in action, highly volatile thoughts in progression. 'Nothing' is the presence of everything. A doodle is that everthing. Way to express feelings, kill the free time, hobby, habit. a spontaneous emission of state of mind or the thought of anything might b of a design or might b of a scene. pouring ur thoughts on screen by drawing randomly.

55

WHEN DO YOU DOODLE? when on the phone, while in a boring class... i doodle just to pass time n keep from falling asleep when i really shouldn't!!! When m in an uninteresting conversation, talking on the phone, attending a boring lecture and when m stressed out and feel like shouting out. I doodle to distract myself from immensely boring things like History lectures...or when there is a pen and paper in my hand and I donot have anything worthwhile or substantial to write or draw, but i still feel the obligation /need (read obsession) to fill it up . when i feel that i need to do something more ...........

Pictures speak more than text, more easily.doodling makes the idea clearer than having it in mind or in text sometimes to scribble down my thoughts/ideas sometimes without any reason To concentrate on what iam thinking or talking. doodle may have different meanings and purposes for different people. many artists, designers doodle as a base concept, layman may doodle to kill his boredom, explain a concept to someone etc.. If i have to tell about myself, i doodle to express myself and also to initiate my thinking and design process. Thoughts can clutter clarity of thinking. Doodling keeps the subconscious busy so that the conscious can think. illustrate/ doodles when listening to something or someone/ story ideas quickly jotted down when ideas r in ur head but they don't have visual form

56

its got that live feeling....it stays crude so you get that liniency from the listener....and the satisfaction when the listener understands you and adds in is enormous, because you could actually express your thoughts well through something so crude sometimes i doodle because it helps me concentrate, like in class...tho my doodling may be completely different from what im trying to concentrate on. often, to help me think clearly sometimes, to allay irritaton I doodle bcoz I enjoy drawing and 'creating' things ‐ which most of the times results in humour when i am blank and dnt want to do anything.......to kill away time.......waiting for sumone.... for the reasons above. though i don't really doodle much. need to develop the habit. While generating, refining ideas. Sometimes unknowingly while deep in thought. to amuse myself like i said, when language does not suffice. also, it's fun! :) when you least want to do is think... not to restrict with in line u may get different ideas. flow with line, colour To confirm Visually and may be to discuss the same with colleagues or boss to give a shape to the intangible idea, to explain the idea to others, to communicate. i doodle mainly just to clear my thought process. it also gives me the freedom to think in different perspectives. it's like an outlet for thoughts that fill the mind when in meetings, nothing as such to do... to give a concrete form to a thought in my head before i forget it. when you are bored, fidgety, or in case of design process, it is a conscious effort For visualizing ideas, communicating them. Also for descriptive purposes sometimes.

57

Last but not the least, for joy. to steer clear of the details and just dig out the essence. sometimes for time pass... sometimes when i have to visualize on paper rather than draw in my mind..and of course to quickly explain to another person what i am thinking. to pass time when i'm really bored, i generally like to doodle when i am not perticularly thinking of something but at times it is also for generating concepts which ends up being thumbnails than doodles.. to "document" what i am thinking about when u cant proceed with just imagination or when u r afraid of forgetting better clarity of half conscious thoughts Yes. To develop models and clarify some ideas about structure and form. give vent to feeligns, express some thought To visually represent ideas or things that you see quick depiction of thought, timepass... To put thoughts in place.. find a way out just bcoz i feel like doodling sometimes when sitting ideally with the comp. eg. waitin for something important to finish downloading. Not when I'm bored.....I doodle when I'm avoiding eye contact.I doodle when I've made eye contact and fucked up.I doodle when the pen has red ink.I doodle when I'm vulnerable.I doodle when my name can be written in yet another style.I doodle when I'm about to deliver the punchline for the day.I doodle when I'm defensive.I doddle when I feel the post modern angst to look creatively busy.I doodle when my mind has asked me to. i doodle when am thinking sumthing seriously , when m getting bored with conversation on telephone or when i am unable to sleep in the class. when i dont have anything else to do......i might doodle.......important is that I should have a pen an paper (media) right in front of me to doodle ...otherwise I won't......

58

Doodle huh .. When I'm bored.. when I'm in mood to sketch .. when I'm frustrated, sad, tensed, irritated etc...... When I am in telecon and not actively participating make up some stuff I doodle when I have paper in front of me! Give me a writing instrument and paper and I shall doodle. I doodle anything! Shapes... scrawls... words on my head, words I like... sometimes I even scratch out the words cuz I don't want anybody to know what's on my head. Cuz I really see the doodle as an abstraction of what's on my head and its madness. I doodle in the morning. When I doodle in the morning I dive into my world and don't see anything. When I don't want to do anything. When I'm doodling I'm happy. I doodle when I'm on the phone. I doodle when I am bored. I just use doodle sometimes make the other person amazing ....... usually draw some cartoon characters with it ..... sometimes play tic‐tac toe online ...its fun .......

59

HOW DO YOU DOODLE? pen, pencil, marker on white board... anything works.. it's not about the tools used... Using a pen or pencil, on sand with my feet or hands ‐ it's a major stress buster, dusty car windshields. I doodle with a pen on paper....notepad, tissue, jeans , arms, legs....etc... ya!! using a pen on any board pen, paper...pages after pages of human figures, caricatures and text. using pencil on sketch book pen /pencil and paper any material infront of me.may be pencil pen compasss,chalk,stone,....etc pen, pencil, sketchpen, brush, dry patels..... etc.. at times mixed media is also intersting. usually its done on tables, papers, book backside, one's instruments like pencil box, bags etc... sometimes floor is also approached. people also doodle on ground i.e. on the mud using a thin stick. pen/pencil on paper/scrap paper. Chai on table. Food on plate. Twigs at chai gate. water in the bathroom. chalk. ball pen on jeans. tatoo. whatever is available. pen on paper pencil most of the time pen on white board, but mostly pencil on paper. Lesser the friction, the better. pen/pencil on paper stick in th esand my finger on a dirty surface cigarette stubs on walls Pen on paper, finger on sand, dust etc. Just wondering, is the thought process same

60

while fiddling and doodling? pen/pencil on a paer/newspaper/wastepaper pencil on paper Using pen, pencil, fingers anything on paper, sometimes on table, even on dust covered surfaces! pencil on paper any surface , any instrument. ask/observe kids, they doodle on walls, sofas, and 'you‐ name‐it's ! on tissue paper mostly watercolour, any knid of sheet, mainly mixed with music which relates. dance and doodle. close ur eye and doodle. Using either a pen or pencil especially used for sketching purpose pen/pencil on a piece of paper, pen on whiteboard chalk on slate/floor digital pen‐ tablet/touchscreen. ‐ in air with fingers ‐ usin pen, pencil whatever is in hand, on a whatever paper is available at that time. usually pen on paper any writing material and on anything....notebooks, newspapers..... pencil on sketchin book paper, any kind of writing tool like pencil / pen / crayon etc pencil and paper, MS Paint on a comp, etc. with anything on anything but usually pen/pencil on paper; sometimes the doodle's even invisible ‐ just running the finger on a table‐top, for example. pen on rough papers(one side used say for Photostats, written matter, tickets, bills and receipts, etc)

61

anything i can get my hands on at that time..including old bills, corners of tray liners or paper napkins..with whateve pen or pencil i find handy.. i generally prefer charcoal on newsprint sheets or some coloured pen on paper.I like to preserve the doodles so would not do them on boards or things where they can be destroyed.. on anything, pen paper, pencil, sand, anythign which allows me to write pen on paper whatever gets in ur hand first! Ball pen on Bond paper. pen on paper pencil/pen on paper with pen on blank portion of a magazine/newspaper/etc... Pen and paper and my office whiteboard .. sometime on my tablet .. but I tend to use it less often now !! I doodle with anything I get in hand , pen, pencil , charcoal , in flash , illustrator ... In .. umm .. probably any piece of paper , i get ... white board, walls , on my hand.... on other ppl;s hands.. etc usually with a pen or pencil on a notebook depends....I have also done it with wooden sticks on sand....depends what media is in front of you .... Whatever be the means, as long as it justifies the end.......a part of me has been left behind. use black pen... pencil with a pencil or a pen on paper of the sketchbook usually on my fone, occasionally online and rarely on paper.
