THE SHRM UTD NEWSLETTER Volume 1 / Issue 1I - 27 September 2015

CONGRATULATIONS JESSICA LIGHTFOOT! Congratulations to Jessica Lightfoot, our President, for receiving the Drew Young Scholarship at a total of $2,000. Sponsored by SHRM, Jessica was chosen based off her participation, scholastic achievement, and being an allaround HR star. Go Jessica!

GENERAL INTEREST MEETING SHRM UTD started the semester with the unusual idea of a General Interest Meeting versus a General Meeting. This allowed those who weren’t sure about what SHRM UTD offered or what we did as an organization to come to a meeting with “no strings attached.” A more social and informative event, the General Interest Meeting introduced the officers of SHRM UTD as well as the advisors of the organization – Dr. Vance Lewis, our chapter advisor, and Jenn Kling, our President Emeritus – to the people who came to this event. The General Interest Meeting not only discussed what SHRM UTD did as an organization within the HR field, but it also was able to discuss the many benefits that SHRM UTD offered. This includes: membership affiliation with SHRM national and DallasHR, professional speakers and career-related workshops, company visits, social and fundraising events, and leadership, mentorship, internship, scholarship, and community service benefits. The meeting ended with laughter and fun as the interested few and officers enjoyed an icebreaker based off the song “Cups” by Anna Kendrick, where they had to learn how to move their cups around in a circle. Every time someone messed up, they had to talk about themselves and get to know one another.

THE SHRM UTD POOL PARTY SOCIAL

Pool Party Social

Last August 28th Friday, SHRM UTD had our very first welcome pool party to kick off at the Phase 1 pool! There were chips, drinks, and other snacks available, brought by many of the officers that were there. Kayla and Daniela, Director of Communication and Social Media and Director of Membership and Recruiting, even baked cookies, and blue and white cupcakes in honor of SHRM UTD colors. Freshmen were invited from those who showed interest from the freshmen orientations that we were able to attend this summer. A variety of people came to the pool party where we had a little icebreaker where one person would say 3 facts

about him or her; however, out of the 3 facts, one had to be false. The task was to have someone new to guess which fact was lie, which made getting to know each other so much more fun. It was a small, intimate and fun party to meet members and some new faces interested in SHRM UTD, and what’s even greater, is that there will be more exciting social events planned for the rest of semester! -Martin Cho, Director of Social Events

OUR NEW TAKE ON RECRUITING Membership is one of the key elements needed in order for an organization to be successful. With the Society of Human Resource Management, we are actively working towards expanding our membership base by really focusing on multiple techniques in recruitment. We are starting the school year with visiting various classrooms in order to inform the student body of our organization, and the many benefits and opportunities we offer like internships, scholarships, mentorships and more! This semester, we have laboriously been working on making new recruitment board, flyers, and presentations to better inform students and get them excited about joining our organization. We would like to get the student body involved in our chapter to not only help us grow as an organization, but also help students who are going into the Human Resource field to connect with the human resource world. We would also like to bring in members who have not picked a major yet and inform them about the many different careers and benefits that the Human Resource field has to offer. Our main goal for this semester is not only to expand our membership base, but to also find different ways that make us better able to recruit students. -Daniela Vargas, Director of Membership and Recruitment
