Indigenous Crafts Of India

It’s well known that India is and has always been a land of a broad spectrum of talent and tradition. It has a diverse culture, so much so that it would be safe to say that, it changes after every few kilometres. Not only does these cultural differences coexist, they flourish. These cultures are depicted through the art and craft of the related communities. Especially after the digital advancements in the country, enlightening people about them has become easier. The art and craft show the rich heritage and hard work that it carries. Some of these handicraft items are so well known that, they have become art pieces collected as decorative items and personal collections for some. Handicrafts made from bamboo are one of the most eco-friendly and one of the oldest crafts to exist in India. Artisans, now have started creating different forms of decoratives from bamboo. From making dolls, to creating baskets, mats, furnitures and many other products. These items have become popular for their unique forms, amazing designs, and excellent craftsmanship. Bamboo products are predominantly prepared in the states of Assam, West Bengal, and Tripura.

While, the well-established tradition of the manufacture of leather in India is demonstrated by the monks and old sages. Leather was utilised in creating footwear and garments as well as in making bags, tops, shield, saddles, and many more. India is famous around the world for its leather items. Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra are particularly known for its leather items like bags, shoes, and clothing. Terracotta, is a yet another work of art, of making figurines and statues from clay, mud, or earth. The terracotta Indian village handicrafts in Assam have amazing imprints of its ancient and unique culture. Many years ago, the craftsmen of Assam used to mainly focus on making statues of religious symbols. Today however, they are mostly focused on designing toys, pots, utensils, artefacts, and vases. The major centre of the terracotta market of the world is the village of Dhubri in the Goalpara district of Assam. As some of these art forms are flourishing, there are many at the verge of dying out. Arts such are Rogan painting has now become limited to be known by just one family in the entire state of Uttar Pradesh. Other arts such as block making of Pethapur, Gujrat;

Dokra (oldest form of metal casting) from Bastar, Chattisgarh; Kathputli (Puppetry) from, Bhat tribe, Rajasthan; and many such crafts have become endangered. People now-a-days are engaging in arts and trying out new styles but, have also started to forget the rich heritage of craftsmanship of

"The notion of education through handicraft rises from the contemplation of truth and love permeating life's activities."

CRYPTOCURRENCY, The New Form Of Money

"Ethereum, or some other Cryptocurrency is going to be the global standard of payment. It’ll be of greater value than national fiat."

Cryptocurrency, derived from the term "encryption," owes its nomenclature to the sophisticated use of coded encryption techniques to validate transactions conducted within its framework. More colloquially, it goes by the moniker "crypto" and, a few years back, was predominantly synonymous with "Bitcoin." The genesis of Bitcoin can be traced back to 2009, marking it as the pioneer of virtual currencies. Indeed, it was a ground-breaking innovation in the realm of digital money. Although the cryptocurrency landscape has expanded since its inception, Bitcoin retains its preeminence as the favoured digital currency.

At its essence, cryptocurrency denotes any form of digital or virtual currency underpinned by cryptographic security measures. What distinguishes cryptocurrencies from conventional currencies is the absence of a central authority governing issuance and regulation. Instead, these digital

currencies operate on a decentralized ledger system to record transactions and mint new units. Notably, unlike traditional fiat currencies underwritten by governments, the value of cryptocurrencies is exclusively driven by the interplay of supply and demand dynamics. This inherent volatility can yield substantial profits for investors but can also lead to significant losses. Importantly, cryptocurrency investments are subject to a markedly lower level of regulatory safeguards compared to traditional financial instruments such as stocks, bonds, and mutual funds.

The genesis of cryptocurrency was rooted in the aspiration to replace conventional government-issued

paper money with a digital medium of exchange free from centralized control. The objective was to facilitate everyday transactions, enabling people to purchase anything from a humble cup of coffee to high-value assets like real estate using digital currencies. While this utopian vision is yet to be fully realized, cryptocurrency's presence in daily life has been steadily expanding as awareness proliferates. Notably, cryptocurrencies have become increasingly accepted as a legitimate payment method across various e-commerce platforms. Techoriented retailers such as newegg. com, AT&T, and Microsoft have embraced cryptocurrency as a means of payment. Overstock, an early adopter, paved the way by accepting Bitcoin. Additionally, giants like Shopify, Rakuten, and Home Depot have joined the fray. Even luxury retailers have not been immune to the crypto craze, exemplified by platforms like "Bitdials," where highend watches are available in exchange for Bitcoin. In 2021, Swiss insurance heavyweight AXA announced its acceptance of Bitcoin as a mode of payment for all its insurance products except life insurance, owing to regulatory constraints. On the domestic front, Premier Shield

Insurance, a U.S.-based insurance provider specializing in home and auto policies, offers the option to pay premiums with Bitcoin.

The foundation of cryptocurrencies lies in blockchain technology. This intricate system delineates the methodology through which transactions are encapsulated within "blocks" and chronologically stamped. While the technicalities of blockchain are complex, the outcome is a tamperresistant digital ledger chronicling cryptocurrency transaction. This resilience to hacking is further bolstered by a stringent two-factor authentication process. Typically, a user initiating a transaction is required to input a username and password. Subsequently, an authentication code, often sent via text to the user's personal mobile device, serves as an additional layer of security.

In sum, cryptocurrency's journey from its cryptic origins to mainstream recognition reflects a transformative force in the world of finance and commerce. Its evolution, marked by the ascendance of Bitcoin and the proliferation of blockchain technology, has ushered in a new era of digital finance, with potential implications spanning from everyday transactions to global financial systems.

Ajay Kumar, Idea Behind Focus Shift Films

How was your experience filming REVA University ad shoot?

We have been working with REVA University for past 4-5 consecutive years now. Each time is a different experience, as the campus keeps changing. The support from staffs and students of Reva remains immense. It’s is always a wonderful experience. All of this has been possible because of the support from everyone. It makes our work easier.

What inspired you to join the film production line, which part of it you enjoy the most?

I used to be an accountant. When the 9 to 5 job didn't workout for me anymore, I started writing and storytelling, that was the start of my creative carrier. I worked under different people, and later decided to build my own production company, where I can have my own freedom. My favorite part is conceptualization and getting the desired outcome from the final product.

What are the major precautions that you ensure, while filming, to avoid re-shoots?

The first step of filmmaking is preproduction, where we plan our procedure, reiki the sites, check all the equipment and check the weather

A story of 4 unrelated characters, getteing tangled in a set of events calculated by fate: a scandalous sex tape, a lost suitcase filled with money, and grudges from past. Just like the game of ludo connected by a dice, where nobody is the winner until the very end.

Anurag Basu, made a comeback after 3 years with his forte of showing his characters in a subtle yet realistic form. His return after “Jagga Jasoos”, Basu has also credited with the screenplay and cinematography is in-form and the way the story unfolds with proper color to showcase the characters life. It has a good selection of songs, catchy yet soothing to one’s ears, when the old modified songs are flowing around. It also features a song from 1950, “Quismat ki Hawa Kabhi Naram”, and sets the mood of the movie.

Pankaj Tripathi stole the show with his outsdanding performance. No matter what character is given to him, he aces it everytime. From perfect timing to effective dialogue delivery, he nails it all. Rajkumar Rao flawlessly, aced

forecast. Though we can never be too sure of the weather, which may affect the film shoot. Otherwise, we make sure that we are not lacking on our part. Planning is very important; it should be perfect.

How did COVID-19/Lockdown affect your work?

The impact was massive, when the first lockdown was still going on, our profession requires us to be mostly outdoors and very less can be done from home. We had to give up on our office at MG road, due to its high rent and no work for a whole year. But we got past our griefs and planned for the future. It was a massive blow for us, we had to suffice with what we had but, we got through it together as a team. Now, we are getting ourselves back on track.

To what extent do you think the COVID has changed ad filming industry?

There are significant changes when it comes to the ad industry, during lockdowns, but there is a limitation to it. For smaller products ads can be shot indoors, but for something like ads for institutions you have to be outdoors, it cannot be done remotely. So once the restrictions are removed, others will also prefer doing outdoor shoots.

his role, with good comic timing and equally emotional mood shift. Partnered with Fatima Sana Shaikh, his troublesome love interest, whom he can’t move past. Even on the part of Abhishek Bachchan, he has done a commendable job. Delivering short dialogues with an expressive face. Aditya Roy Kapoor’s character is caring and righteous. He was the perfect selection for the role. There are other commendable actors in the movie as well.

The movie is a must watch. For its story and a variety of characters The story line crisp. It has been sometime since bollywood has brought out an out of the box movie.

What are the other projects you are currently working on?

Right now we are working on an ad for awareness on water conservation, for central government. It’s about saveing water, water restoration and rain water harvesting. And there are other projects down the line, that are yet to be finalized.

Any advice for the people who want to join the film/ad production line?

Filmmaking is not Rocket Science. There is not much required to become a filmmaker, all you need is basic common sense and understanding of the things around. A storyteller will also make a good filmmaker. Anybody can be a filmmaker, and in the process of it, one will get to learn its technical aspects. One needs to find the passion within.

Science & Fun

"Human Gene Editing", Is It Bane or Boon?

Science is growing very fast. It’s good that they are experimenting more on these aspect, in the past it would have sounded like a fiction. But such experiments should be done in moderation so that it does not become negative for the humanity.

Sumantha Hegde, 3rd year, BAJEP

Human gene editing is a vast field, that has not been explored completely yet. Its positive aspect is in the welfare of everyone. And as long as such experiments are within the ethical boundaries, it is going to help a lot of people.

Nandini,

I’m not familiar with this topic completely. So, my opinion might seem biased, but genetics is not something that should be changed and let things go according to the nature’s process.

It is more evil than good. The nature has a process, which should not be meddled with. It might have some good aspect but excess of such researches can be pretty bad.

Sripriya Mandayam,1st year, MAJC

Human gene editing is a very progressive step in the field of human genetics, it shows the possibility of curing many chronic diseases such Diabetes. However, it should not be exploited, in that case it will actually be a bane for the society.

Pooja Pryiadarshni, 2nd year, M. Sc.

“Human genome editing has the potential to advance our ability to treat and cure disease, but the full impact will only be realized if we deploy it for the benefit of all people, instead of fuelling more health inequity between and within countries.”

n There is a procedure for severe epilepsy that involves cutting the connecting nerves of the two brain hemispheres, resulting in the two hemispheres being unable to communicate with each other. Experiment show that both halves can answer questions independently of each other, have seperate opinions/ preferences, form memories independantly.

n When you dream, one portion of your brain creates the story, while another part witnesses the events and is really shocked by the plot twists.

n Human brain isn't fully formed until age 25. Brain development begins from the back of the brain and works its way to the front. Therefore, your frontal lobes, which control planning

and reasoning, are the last to strengthen and structure connections.

n It’s a myth that you only use 10 percent of your brain. You actually use all of it. Even when you are sleeping. Neurologists confirm that your brain is always active.

n 60% of human brain consists of fats, making it the fattiest organ in the body. These fatty acids are very crucial for the brain to function continuously, without a break. It weighs around 3 pounds.

n Brain information travels up to an impressive 268 miles per hour. When a neuron is stimulated, it generates an electrical impulse that travels from cell to cell. A disruption in this regular processing can cause an epileptic seizure.

It has both positive and negative aspect to it. But, I would suggest that it has more negative points because of its unpredictable nature. As, a lot of such experiments still don’t determine a good success rate.

Priya, 1st year, BAJMC

It is an advancement in the field of medical sciences, as it is going to help a lot of patients suffering from chronic genetic diseases. This will help humanity a lot.

Nisha, P.Hd Scholar, Department of Biotechnology

It is a double-edged sword, both in negative way. Not only is it ethically wrong, but also is injustice to the normal people and the society. Even the end results are uncertain.

Dr. Anupama, Asst. Prof., Department of Physics

It’s not ethical for the human society and hence should be banned. It is unfair for the natural existence of human beings. It exceeds the balance of nature. There are some things that should not be meddle with.

Dr. Pramodini, Asst. Prof., Department of Physics

Human gene editing should be continued, but there should be conditions to be followed in such a way that, it can be in control of some regulatory body, so that it can be in the welfare for human beings. And not cause any damage to the environment or the biodiversity. Human gene editing is important for the medical sciences to study the diseases and developing vaccines.

Social Media Intolerance And Indifference

The words intolerance and indifference are opposite of each other. While intolerance means, “unwillingness to accept views, beliefs, or behaviour that differ from one's own”, indifference means “lack of interest, concern, or sympathy”. These are the two side of a coin that, cannot be separated when it comes to social media usage. People have become insensitive enough to use other’s insecurities for selfgratification. In the name of freedom of speech, the masses have started to use social media platforms to target individuals or specific communities, without knowing the backstory of them. Due to these false media trails, the truth is lost and leaves the person with severe mental scars. During the beginning of COVID-19 outbreak, many such case surfaced in the name of “COVID Hate Crimes”. Many Asian people attacked physically and on social media for spreading the virus, based on the hypothesis that “the virus was engineered by the Chinese”.

There was a noticeable increase hostility towards the Asian ethnicity keeping the pre-existing cases aside. Even when an issue is brought up on such platforms, they turn into a matter of trend and participating in it. While these topics turn into trends, the ground level changes are minimal to null in a lot of cases. Hashtags such as “me too” and “black lives matter”, are the clear

evidences. They rose to popularity very fast, but fizzled out eventually. The cases relevant to these are still rising and the measures of prevention are very less. Political Influencers still continue to make illogical statements about attires and hate crimes against the Native Americans have not stopped anyless.

A lot of this has to do with electronic

media portrayals of the targeted group. It is the job of these media to bring facts and truth to the masses. But for the sake of sensationalism, they manufacture news, that shows a great impact on the common people. Another reason for the media houses to shoe such news is for the benefit of political leaders of the country. It is the duty of people as media consumers to check the facts and false properly to not make life hard for the victims. People should also make it sure that they are not being insensitive of critical issues. There source to acquire news, but confirming its credibility lies in the hands of its consumers.

Budget 2022-23, Disappoints The Backbone

[Art: Shreya Narayan]

The country had to see a second phase of lockdown, when the seemingly effective COVID-19 vaccines seemed to fail, due to the Omicron variant of the virus. The number of affected people increased rapidly, despite the fact that people were vaccinated.

A month of lockdown and the surge in the positive cases proved that, vaccines can only delay the virus, but are not

absolute remedies. The scientists are still working on the vaccines. It’s a relief that the virus itself was not very lethal, else the consequences might have been disastrous.

It was a defeat for the vaccines, showing that maintaining social distance and proper hygiene is still the best way to avoid being affected by Corona Virus.

The finance minister announced no changes in taxation for the backbone of Indian economy, in the budget for financial year 2022-23. Indian

government did not show any consideration for the losses faced by middle economic class, despite a constant price rise.
