Tell Me a Story

Stories are how friendships begin, news is told, and ideas are shared. We get to know each other through stories. The stories of our past shape our future, and they are the windows that allow others to see the unique people that God has made us.

It is through story that we get to know God as well. In the Scriptures, the stories of God’s work in the lives of men and women take form and show us how God’s story and our story interact.

In March, we begin a new sermon series called “Narratives.” It will be a series of sermons based on the story arc of God’s work in the Bible. Each week we will talk about how God’s story and your story are intertwined and being written day-in and day-out. Donald Miller’s book Storyline will form the backdrop for our study. You can find it on Amazon, but what I really encourage you to do is to join one of our small groups during the weeks leading up to Easter. In your small group you will have the opportunity to explore the sermons in a deeper study and to unpack the concepts that will have a life-changing impact on your life. Beginning next month, we will launch a center for new worshiping communities at SHPC. Funded by the PCUSA’s 1001 worshiping communities, this center will be in charge of resourcing churches in a five state area as they begin to think about how they can reach out to new neighborhoods with the good news of Jesus Christ. Caz Minter, the pastor of Live Oak in Cedar Park, will take on the leadership and will work with our church to develop the center. We will have more information as the center develops firm plans for the future.

Speaking of plans, we have a team working to develop a five-year plan for our church and its ministry. They have been identifying strengths and areas of growth in our ministry together. They will then begin to work with the congregation to develop firm plans for how to move into the next five years with strong vision. Please be praying for their work ahead.

MISSION Kids Hope Happenings Kids Hope is in the middle of its second year at SHPC, and we currently have 9 mentors meeting with their students weekly as well as 9 prayer partners praying for them each week. It continues to be a great success in supporting kids in their learning.

We are excited to announce Karen Johnson will be the new director of the program, as Lori Whitmire has stepped down, effective March 1st. Karen is excited about leading this program and is looking forward to growing it over the next year. If you are interested in learning more about how you can get involved in Kids Hope, please contact Karen at

kidshope@shpc.org Karen is looking for some volunteers for her leadership team, such as communications coordinator, events coordinator, and prayer partner coordinator.

These positions don’t take a lot of time, and you don’t have to mentor to be eligible. This is a great way to get involved with Kids Hope if you are unable to commit to 1 hour each week.

Another way to volunteer is our annual Easter Egg fundraiser for Williams. We will be getting a wish list of items from the teachers and you’ll be able to grab an egg

describing some these items after services closer to Easter so that you can purchase the item(s) for the teacher. Please check the bulletin as it gets closer to Easter for more information.

Thanks to all the volunteers in the program. We’d love to have more people involved, so please contact us atkidshope@ shpc.org. We are able to provide training throughout the year.

Cold Weather Shelter When the temperature drops below freezing on a Thursday, SHPC members Chester Wuest and Mary Lynn Scheirer can be found at Central Presbyterian Church, serving dinner and providing shelter to homeless women in downtown Austin. Mary Lynn tells us she provides food to the women, but the work “feeds her soul.”

Salvation Army shelters experience a high demand, and a number of downtown churches open their doors to help out. Central Presbyterian, where SHPC volunteers help out, is set aside for women only. On most nights, between 20 and 25 women are provided dinner, a warm place to sleep and breakfast.

The Freeze Night program (also known as “Front Steps”) has been a ministry of Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church for the past 16 years. While some programs are aimed at helping neighbors recover from temporary stress by creating a longer-term stable environment, the Cold Weather Shelter is a rescue program. The goal is to provide a safe and warm spot for a few hours.

Mo O’Meara and Nancy Lowe are other frequent volunteers and they take pride in providing something special to eat for the women, and plenty of it.

How do Freeze Nights work? On very cold nights, Austin Resource Center for the Homeless (ARCH) and 2

The season runs from Thanksgiving to Valentines Day, and during a normal winter, volunteers are called 2 or 3 times to either make and serve dinner or spend the night. The Ride for Refuge bicycling event on Feb. 8th raised money for refugees, asylees, survivors of human trafficking and other displaced people in Austin, Texas.

Riders rode one of three different routes starting and ending from Yellow Bike Project (a local volunteer-led initiative) on what began as a chilly morning and turned out to be a beautiful, sunny day. Cheers came in as waves of riders returned, and each rider was warmed up with a Ride for Refuge t-shirt, hot drinks, food and the chance to win several different raffle prizes - all provided free of charge by local businesses. We are proud to announce that Christie Wright led an SHPC team which raised over $1,200! Thank you riders and donors!

Organization for the event took place over the past several months and was not only incredibly successful in raising funds but also in raising public awareness for refugees in Austin.

Ride for Refuge drew in over 170 riders on 25 teams, 50 volunteers, and over $20,000 that will make an incredible impact on the families RST Austin helps each day. The majority of funds will be utilized to support struggling families

RST Austin believes it now has an additional 220 advocates for refugees and other displaced people who will continue to support this population as well as the important work the organization provides to the community in the coming years. RST Austin plans to hold another Ride for Refuge next year and hops to increase the funds generated and number of participants involved.

PRIME TIME PrimeTime Spring Retreat, ST. PAUL SPEAKS: Speaking the Truth in Love Tuesday, April 29th to Thursday, May 1st

This year our time together will be centered on the words of Paul. Our special guest will be Philip Smith who will share his “Performance Scripture” with us in two special dramatic presentations. We will also have various lessons, meditations, and worship led by Rev. Larry Coulter, Rev. Ted Thulin, Joyce Stewart (original founder of the Senior Adult Ministry at SHPC), and Sherry Smith (Director of Adult Ministry).

We will once again be at the lovely Camp Buckner in Marble Falls. The rooms are hotel style with two double beds and private bathroom with shower. There are some rooms specially equipped as handicapped rooms so please request that if you wish. The guest rooms are very near the meeting room. Rides can be given to the dining hall for those who don’t wish to

walk. Rides can also be arranged to get to the camp.

The cost will be $195 for a single person in a room or $145 each for two people sharing a room. The cost includes 5 meals plus fireside s’mores. Brochures are available in the narthex and office. PERFORMANCE SCRIPTURE When the Apostle Paul wrote his letters, only about five percent of the people could read. Originally, biblical writings were communicated orally. ADULT MINISTRY Join A ‘Narratives’ Small Group During Lent!

We are excited to announce that SHPC is going to be participating in a Lenten Sermon Series & Small Group Study called ‘Narratives’ with other Presbyterian Churches in the area (Westlake, Hope, St. John’s, Dripping Springs & Live Oak). Similar to Explore God, all the churches will be preaching on the same themes each week. To go along with the sermons Westlake has put together a fantastic Small Group study guide.

Narratives is designed to make the season of Lent deeply meaningful and transformative. Using eight common elements of storytelling, we will spend eight weeks looking at scripture, the world, and our own lives as we seek to live a better story.

One of the goals for this series is to consider our own life’s story. To help in this end, WHPC has developed a website called Storylab. For those who want to take a step deeper, they can go to www.yourstorylab.org.

There you will find additional passages of scripture as well as writings, poems, photos, and movie clips which build off the theme for each week. This is a unique way to enrich your experience throughout this study.

The Narratives sermon series will begin on March 9th and last 8 weeks through April 27th. Because of where Spring Break (March 10-14) lands we are going to have Small Groups at SHPC start the week following Spring Break. Due to starting the Small Groups after the second sermon in the series, our Small Groups will run 7 weeks.

Whether you have participated in small group before or you never have, we strongly encourage you to sign up for an 7-week Narratives Small Group. Small groups give you the opportunity to live in and be in community with other believers.

Morning Men’s Groups @ Both Campuses!

Attention SHPC Men: You are invited to attend either of the Men’s Groups that will meet twice a month.

These groups will meet on Tuesday mornings from 6:30-7:30am.

The William Cannon group will meet in the FMC & be led by Larry. The Brodie group will meet in the sanctuary at St. John’s & be led by Ted. These groups will be a time to talk over a good cup of coffee, to build community and to grow in

relationship with Jesus Christ. It will also be a time to pray & encourage each other to be servant leaders in our families, and in the church. Both groups will meet on Tuesdays March 4th & 18th. If you are interested or have any questions please email Ted at ted@shpc.org.

We are also incredibly excited to announce that there will be 4 Man Events throughout the year. What’s a Man Event? It is a time of fellowship

and male bonding with SHPC men getting together to do really cool guy things & speak to the heart of men, while building community.

The very 1st Man Event will be Saturday April 26th at the Boob Ranch where there will be motorcycle riding, skeet shooting, swimming, steaks on the grill & a special guest speaker. Mark it on your calendar now. More details to come.

readings and study manual questions. Though there is a great deal of study involved, the heart of this program is about transformation rather than just information.

Participants learn how to live their lives as disciples.

A passion for bringing Christ’s love and care to people during a time of need We’ve all experienced a time of need when our life was “messy”? Maybe you had a good friend you could lean on or a family member who was there for you, remember how grateful you were for that “leaning post”? Unfortunately not everyone has someone they can turn to in a time of need, that’s what a Stephen Minster has been trained to do. They are here to walk along someone who’s life has become “messy” to listen and be there for that person..

CHILDREN & FAMILIES Daddy-Daughter Sock Hop This year’s Daddy Daughter Dance is a 50’s-themed sock hop! And for the Moms...Ladies Night Out with a fun 50’s-themed movie in the sanctuary! Childcare will be available for children (preschool-3rd grade) not attending the dance. Registration begins March 1st, 2014. Cost is $5 per family.

Our planning team is looking for a few more helping hands to put this year’s Daddy Daughter dance together. So… if you have a knack for snacks, a love of crafts, a flair for decorating, or just plain love to PLAN.. we need you! Each team has a coordinator who will fill you in on the task at hand. TRUE STUDENT MINISTRIES Understanding Teenagers

I know what kind of response the title, Understanding Teenagers, evokes. “Really, Mike, how much article space do you need to say, ‘Your guess is as good as mine’?”

What about, “I do not know what’s going on in my teenager’s brain, and I’m not sure that I want to know.”

It’s true. Parenting a teenager may feel uncertain most of the time, and attempting to climb into the brain of one’s teen is not for the faint of heart. Developing a deeper understanding in some key areas, however, can strengthen your parenting confidence as well as the bond between you and your teen.

Back in the Day...

Have you ever caught yourself saying, “When I was a kid...”? That phrase is our attempt to get our kids to understand where we are coming from as adults, but sadly, most of the kids we try to share our wisdom with don’t understand the context of those lessons at all. The tough truth for us as parents is that kids today are growing up in a vastly different world than the one we hearken back to.

The first thing to remember is that being a teenager isn’t any easier today then it was when you were a youngster. It is different, not easier.

There is so much going on in their little brains, that if we knew, it would make our own heads spin. I get tired just listening to the schedules many of our SHPC students keep. Their lives are hectic. Just like our own teenage experience, responsibilities are thrust onto these students while the control over their lives is still quite limited. We often forget that the emotional, physical & intellectual transition that they are going through is enormous.

We can often help translate some of the messages they send you as well as send some information that will go against the stream that you need them to hear.

One Foundational Suggestion Some of the best parents are able to take a small number of conversational tools and put it to good use at all times. If there’s one tool that we would start you with as you parent your teen, it would be this.

Be willing to talk to them at any time about anything they may wish to discuss.

So understanding our teenagers is hard work. Real understanding involves work for both parents and kids—a willingness to be vulnerable with each other, and a willingness as a parent to hear your kids out. If you really want to understand them and communicate with them, you have to study them...like the wild creatures that they are.

Don’t censor the subjects they wish to bring to the table.

Open your mind and ears to their wisdom and words. No matter how uncomfortable we may be in discussing certain subjects with them, it is our responsibility to answer questions truthfully and express our worry, fear or lack of knowledge where it is appropriate.

That is where good student ministry comes in. We are not expert problem-fixers, but we are fluent in

your life to speak honestly with your teen. You are simply opening an important door to understand what goes on in their hearts and minds.

It is really tough to understand why teenagers do the things they do when you see them flip from calm one minute to an emotional wreck the next. One day they make wise and admirable choices, and the next, disastrous mistakes.

Yesterday they earned your trust, but today they lost it again.

Believe me when I say that the parents of teens throughout our congregation experience the same things as you week after week, so we’re offering a new three week parent series in April that we would love for you to be at.
