The 113th UPHA American Royal National Championship Brought Tears and Cheers By Lauren Jackson Kansas City, MO-The UPHA American Royal Championship was held Nov.12th-Nov.17th 2012 at Kemper Arena; American Royal Complex, Kansas City, MO. This year’s show proceeded with all the traditions, excitement and adrenaline and provided a venue for the world’s greatest of Saddlebreds and Hackneys to perform, compete and win. Monday night started off the celebration with a movie night showing old reels of some of the greatest American Royal Shows, offering a night of nostalgia with a touch of anticipation of “what may come.” Tuesday night honored Dr. Robert “Bud” Hertzog with the American Royal Horse Person of the Year. He was honored for his 50 years of service as the official veterinarian of the American Royal. A reception was held in his honor in the Exhibitor’s Club. Wednesday night, the Missouri’s Breeder’s Association hosted their Annual Stallion Auction with drinks and refreshments. On Thursday evening, after another full day of competition ,the UPHA Classics Incentive Auction for Yearlings and Two Year Olds was held at the Hale Arena. Everyone enjoyed themselves with more food and drinks and bidding to place on many promising young horses. Brooke Boyer atop He’s Heaven Sent

Friday evening marked another day and night of fierce competition. Immediately following the Ladies Five-Gaited National Championship, everyone gathered in the Grand Hall for the “Pink Ribbon Exhibitor’s Party,” a reception honoring the courageous women who battle breast cancer. Saturday, The Grand Finale, needs no additional mention as we all watched every class intently taking note of all the week’s wins, losses and champions. The most emotional event of the week was the video Saturday night celebrating CH Attaché’s Orchid’s career. The 17 year old mare collapsed after leaving the arena Wednesday after winning the ASB ThreeGaited Pony Grand Championship. According to officials she suffered from a ruptured aorta. Many a tear rolled down the cheeks of spectators as we were moved with compassion as we watched a memorial video highlighting the life of this seven time winner at the American Royal-UPHA National Championship. Shown by Hunter Chancellor and owned by Steven and Terri Chancellor of Evansville, IN, we could only sympathize with this great loss and cheered as Hunter went on to compete and win the ASB Three-Gaited Jr. Exhibitor 14-17 Championship and the ASB Five-Gaited Jr. Exhibitor 14-17 Championship. What a night and what a week. Congratulations to all and until next year…

News Saddlebred World loSeS Tom blaNkeNShIp Lexington, Kentucky - Tom Blankenship, 72, of Frankfort, Kentucky passed away on Saturday, November 17, 2012 after a brief illness. Mr. Blankship was born in Nashville, Tennessee to the late Tom A. and Clemma L. Blankenship. He is survived by his partner, Stephanie Robery of Frankfort, Kentucky; daughter, Gayle Blankenship and granddaughter, Katrina Blankenship of Harrodsburg, Kentucky; sister, Carol J. Schubert of Nashville, Tennessee, and brother, Dr. Edward S. Blankenship of Manhattan, New York. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sheryl Ann Blankenship. Mr. Blankenship was an alumnus of West End Hight School, Nashville, as well as the University of Kentucky. He had an illustrious career in the American Saddlebred industry as a trainer and breeder of numerous World’s Champions at his beloved Sheragay Farm in Lexington, Kentucky. In addition to his long career in the show horse industry, Mr. Blankenship was an active real estate developer and entrepreneur in both Kentucky and Tennessee. He loved his Kentucky Wildcats, Keeneland, the Derby, vanilla ice cream, and his ‘Ole Kentucky Home’ in Frankfort. Mr. Blankenship, a true gentleman with a profound love of nature, lived with dignity and purpose and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Saddlebred World loSeS roger meade Lexington, Kentucky - Roger Clayton Meade, 73, passed away Tuesday, November 27, 2012 in Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Born September 14, 1939 in Russell County he was the son of the late Cecil and the late Frances Kiser Meade. A graduate of Castlewood High School class of 1957, Roger was a retired employee of Appalachian Power Company, Clinch River Plant with 32 years of service. He was owner and operator of Roger Meade Stables. He was a lifelong member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother: Reginald Meade; one nephew: David Meade; one brother-in-law: Clifford Huffman; and one sister-in-law: Janet Meade. Survivors include wife of 53 years: Gladys Meade; two daughters: Darlene Rose and husband Tim; and Laura McComas and husband Robert, all of Lebanon, Virginia; one granddaughter: Martha Carter and husband Travis, Lebanon, Virginia; two sisters: Joyce Huffman, Bristol, Virginia; and Janice Musick and husband Douglas, Kingsport, Tennessee; one brother: Duff Meade, Honaker, Virginia; one sister-in-law: Betty Meade, Florida; Also several nieces and nephews survive. The family would like to thank Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for the outstanding and loving care they have provided.

Saddlebred World loSeS paulINe hall Lexington, Kentucky - Pauline “Aggie” (Mahan) Hall of Clay passed away at Upstate University Hospital with her loving family at her side on November 28, 2012. She was 82. She was a graduate of Marcellus High School. She was the driving force behind our family farm, Hallston Manor. She and her daughters owned the record-breaking, Supreme Heir, who was the number one stallion in the country for several years. She was actively involved with The American Saddlebred Association of New York for many years, and was an integral part of the Syracuse International Horse Show. Aggie was incredibly proud of her Irish Heritage. She always had a smile on her face, had a true passion for life and no one was ever a stranger to her. Her favorite places were our farm, our camp on Henderson Harbor and St. Martin.

Lexington, Kentucky - American Saddlebred stallion, I’m A New Yorker passed away on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at 32 years of age at Cornerstone Farm. A Reserve World’s Champion himself, I’m A New Yorker went on to sire multiple World’s Champions. George and Linda Nash owned and loved I’m A New Yorker for the past 20 years, and he had been in the care of Fred Sarver’s Cornerstone Farm for the past 16 years

Lexington, Kentucky - Saddlebred Rescue (SBR) announces discounts on adoption fees for horses adopted through the balance of the year.

World Champion Dixie Jubilee was humanely euthanized at 34 years of age. He was shown to Amateur Harness Pony World Championships by Mary Gaylord McClean and the KY County Fair World Championship at age 16 by Dr. Alan Raun. He was purchased by Pete Reeves and still had championships and continued success at Louisville with Ann Reeves and Dr. Arlie Fiveash showing. His final owner was Tina Smith of Mountain Laurel Saddlebreds. He continued winning championships and was the USEF Harness Pony of the Year twice. ARHRPA awarded him his Grand Champion status. After retirement he continued as a great ambassador for the breed attending schools, horse fairs and local events. Smiley as he was known was the happiest pony in the world if he was going for a ride on the horse trailer!

Daybreak Farm - a New Beginning in Tennessee By Kelley Reason Mount Juliet, TN_Daybreak Farm has found a new home in the heart of Middle, Tennessee. Earlier this year Carmella Menolasino, owner of Daybreak Farm, decided to make a change. Located near Chicago, Illinois, she decided a change was in order for her barn and business. After months of researching and visiting various areas she decided upon Mount Juliet, TN, a location about 25 minutes east of Nashville. So, they sold their farm in Illinois, downsized some of their horses, packed up their remaining horses and belongings and headed south to Tennessee. Daybreak Farm continues to offer in their new location a full featured breeding and training farm featuring gifted American Saddlebred horses with the bloodlines of record Champions, Hall of Fame broodmares, and World Champion sires. They offer saddleseat riding lessons-beginners through advanced, to all ages. Driving lessons are also available. Daybreak Farm On October 27, Daybreak held an open house at their new facility. It was a day filled with face painting, barbeque, riding, and silent auction selections. All moneys raised went to St Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Several great items were offered up for the silent auction-horse feed, several beautiful pieces of jewelry, yard carts, a gorgeous horse sculpture, lamps, as well as many other horsey and non horsey items. Riding demonstrations were conducted by several Daybreak riders that afternoon. To cap off a fun filled day several young horses were led out for visitors to see, as well as several of their beautiful breeding stallions. Daybreak offers their foundation sires, Go Modern and Union Town to the public for breeding in 2013. These stallions were selected for their heart, athleticism, performance, bloodline, and beauty. Daybreak prides itself on horses that are sound, having correct conformation, good-thinking minds, and trainable attitudes. Carmella points out, “We breed for excellence, but not at the price of unsoundness or malformities. Our horses are naturally gifted.” As one happy client of Daybreak put it, “My daughter started riding here 4 years ago and LOVES it! Carmella is a wonderful trainer and teacher. N.C. State Fair Continues To Grow by Samantha Huff RALEIGH, NC – The final leg of the 2012 North Carolina State Fair Horse Show was held October 24th – 27th at the Gov. James B. Hunt, Jr. Horse Complex in Raleigh. This portion featured Saddlebreds, Morgans, Hackneys, and Roadsters. Warm days and cool nights were a perfect setting for a great show.

According to Sheri Bridges, entries increased from last year. Judge Lisa Waller had her work cut out for her because the classes were filled with exceptional horses and riders. The juvenile classes were especially tough. Many young and talented riders were making their mark on the Saddlebred World. For many exhibitors this is the final show of their season, each striving for that last “best” ride. For some that means bringing home the blue, but for some just having that perfect ride is so much more. Sometimes the smile is worth more than a blue. This show continues to grow and draw in more horses and exhibitors. Management is looking forward to seeing what happens next year. Wishing everyone good luck at their next event and here’s to an even better 2013 show.
