LOW COUNTRY STYLE

Photography by Laurey W. Glynn

The Southern Living Idea House on Bald Head Island, South Carolina, may be best described as southern, classy, and comfortable. It has a great sense of place and livability. One of the main reasons for that is the interior design, the vision of Lindsey Coral Harper.

“In all of our projects, I want to be sure that our work compliments the design and architectural style of each house as well as our client's lifestyle. It's imperative our clients instantly feel at home, as we are simply bringing their vision to life. I think it's obvious that we like to use color, texture, and pa erns to bring a space to life. Layers warm up a space and result in cozy and livable rooms. We enjoy coming up with interesting and unique ideas, so you might walk into a room and say, ‘Wow…I wouldn't have thought to do that.’”

Lindsey Coral Harper’s early life was spent in Jesup where her father and stepmother, Rick and Linda Harper, still reside. A graduate of the University of Georgia, she established her own residential design fi rm in 2007 in New York, NY. Her work has been featured on the cover of House Beautiful, Garden and Gun, and Southern Living. In 2019, she opened Coral, a shop in Watch Hill, Rhode Island, featuring home décor, furniture, art, accessories, and more. She, her husband Chris, and their pet Horton currently reside in Stonington, CT.

MIX OLD AND NEW

Mix vintage furniture pieces like the split-reed bamboo cocktail table and end tables with new upholstery. This gives this family room a comfortable and low-key vibe, yet it is still quite sophisticated. Don't be afraid to use one large whimsical pa ern to anchor your space. I balanced the family room by having one showstopper pa erned sofa and kept the other pieces in solid, neutral colors and mixed in smaller pa erns. The printed pa ern on sofa is from “Ferns” by Alan Campbell, from Quadrille - quadrillefabrics.com.

LAMPSHADES DO NOT HAVE TO BE BORING

Elevate your lamps by using lampshades with a fun, printed fabric. This small print works great with the room's color pale e and instantly changes the look of the lamp. Linen shades also soften the light from lamps, which helps create a soft and cozy atmosphere. The lampshades are from Blanche Field, New York & Boston - blanchefi eld.com.

tip Another way to bring in color or pa erns is with painted furniture, like these coral side tables. The pa ern and color on these are unexpected yet still subtle. I love to fi nd vintage accessories like this adorable brass snail DETAILS MATTER or use items that have been passed down for generations. Use unexpected details on furniture when you can. Like the fringe on this o oman, even with its intricate design, it is still somewhat casual because it is 100% co on. Having this contrasting detail really gives the o oman some real oomph. The painted coral side tables are from Fabulous Things in Atlanta - fabulousthingsatlanta.com.

PAINTED FLOORS

Nothing brings hardwood fl oors to life like a li le bit of paint!! I really love the look of painted fl oors, especially in spaces that can otherwise be a li le boring. This ivory hallway goes from drab to fab by adding a unique pa ern and splash of color to the fl oors!! The decorative Painter, Jay C. Lohmann - jayclohmann.com.

BRING THE OUTSIDE IN

Look no further than your backyard for inspiration. Notice how we incorporated an outdoor element in the fl oors by painting abstract and oversized leaves in various shades of green over the beige geometric pa ern. The fl oors are now light and bright and have a li le punch from the pa ern and color.

REPETITION A GREAT IDEA

The geometric pa ern from the diamond grasscloth wallcovering on our walls is incorporated in the painted pa ern on the fl oor. We also used the diamond shape again in the detail on the railing. Having the diamond shape on the walls, fl oors, and railings ties them all together.
