What lies behind the doors? Architecture and Art Drive around Palmerston North and you’ll discover some architectural gems. In three cases, it is also what happens inside the buildings that adds value to the city. On Main Street, near the south entrance to the city centre is the Globe Theatre. This circular Brian Elliot designed building was inspired by Shakespeare’s original theatre in London. In 2014, a second auditorium was added and the foyer and cafÊ/bar area extended. For over 30 years, the Globe has been home to many local performance groups, notably the Manawatu Theatre Society, local dance and drama productions and tertiary institutions. It is also a flexible venue for hiring. The Palmerston North arts community has made Square Edge their home for over 25 years. The distinctive art deco building, designed by R Thorrald-Jaggard is also home to numerous community groups who enjoy meeting in the

beautiful rooms which are available for public use. Local artists and arts group gather there to practice, celebrate and showcase their art. For a similar period, Caccia Birch homestead on Te Awe Awe Street has been made available to the public to use as a function and conference centre. The homestead is now a Historic Place Trust Category I listed property and sits in the heart of Hokowhitu in a beautiful environment next to the City’s Lagoon. The Scandinavian influence is evident in architect Ludolf Georg West’s design. Over the years, Caccia Birch has been used for client networking functions, product launches, exhibitions, birthdays, anniversaries, garden parties and musical events on the lawn in summer.

Art as far as the eye can see! After wandering through Palmerston North’s city centre, you’ll appreciate the strength of the local arts sector. Grab an Arts Trail guide from the iSite in The Square and explore the internationally-renowned sculptures and art pieces around The Square. Stumble across Square Edge Community Arts Centre, a hub of artistic talent with something for everyone. Take a look at Snails Artist Run Space or The White Room Co. Safe As Art Gallery captures the best urban artists across the lower North Island. The Palmerston North Public Sculpture Trust has spearheaded an impressive contemporary sculpture annually since 2007 including Bob Janke and Paul Dibble. Making public art part of the city’s vernacular, the diverse range of artists and techniques on show are guaranteed to capture everyone’s imaginations. Combine that with the Pacific rock sculptures in Te Marae o Hine, the many eclectic pieces around Te Manawa Museum and Art Gallery and the more

traditional marble and bronze sculptures around the city, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Street art is making a big splash across some of our buildings, laneways, and other nooks and crannies. Take a look at Berrymans Lane, where emerging and established local street artists sit side-by-side with international pieces, or see the latest piece of street art on the Safe As free wall on Church Street. Keep your eyes peeled when walking around the city’s cultural quarter or you’ll miss some of the other hidden gems of local talent. Public art has become a staple at events across the city centre. Whether it be tape art, live muralpainting, ice carving, or lantern making, there’s plenty to see or do across the city’s lively arts scene.

The Living Room of the City ‘What we love about our Living Room is who we share it with’ If you haven’t visited the Palmerston North City Library, you’re missing a memorable experience. Known as The City’s Living Room, their doors are open to everyone. They welcome over 2000 visitors each day, making it one of the city’s most used community facility. In fact, they’ve had over 10 million visitors since their current building opened in 1996. That’s a lot of people, with a lot of different reasons for visiting. Driven by their mission, Te Ara Whãnui o Te Ao – To inspire people to explore the pathways of the world, the library is many things to many people. Libraries are not just about books. They are about people. They are about community. A lot of things have changed in the past 20 years and the City Library wants to meet the needs of the local community in today’s environment and be relevant for the next generation of users. To continue with their mission, the Central Library is to make some changes. Not just small changes,

but some exciting ones people are going to love. These changes are going to allow them to open their doors wider in more than a literal sense. There will be greater connection with its surroundings, particularly a direct flow between The Square and George Street. The upgraded Living Room is going to have bold new designs to provide space to learn, meet, greet, perform, make, watch and chill. The Ian Athfield masterpiece of design will not be compromised as the redevelopment will continue to respect the building’s heritage and Athfield’s design. Every month, the City Libraries have a wide range of events and activities for all ages including guest speakers, book launches and cultural events throughout the week and the city. Visitors are always welcomed and able to use the free WiFi and public computers. Check out their website citylibrary.pncc.govt.nz for up-to-date information.

Palmy Unleashed is a new Palmerston North City Council initiative that encourages and enables the community to set up events and activities in public spaces. The Palmy Unleashed team has led a number of events to showcase how simple it can be to hold a micro event or an activity in the city centre. Lunchtime Yoga in The Square on a summer’s day is an example of a Palmy Unleashed initiative.

The city wants the community to have the confidence to try out their ideas and share their talents without fear of failure. Palmy Unleashed is there to support them. Several events have been held to showcase opportunities. Hundreds enjoyed Movies in The Square, including screenings of Frozen and Finding Dory for families, and Casablanca and Cool Running for evening audiences. The crowds turned up with blankets, beanbags, food and even sleeping bags to watch a movie from a mobile screen. They were free events that saw the city’s ‘front lawn’ provide a welcoming space for everyone to enjoy. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Lunchtime Yoga in The Square was another example of a Palmy Unleashed event. For a gold coin donation, participants enjoyed group stretching and deep breathing in the middle of the working day on the same lawn area of The Square. Palmy Unleashed’s role is for the Council to work with community members, to assist them to be selfsufficient to run activations and events with little involvement and funding. It will help individuals and groups navigate processes, remove red tape and minimise the number of barriers for community-led projects. The activities just need to be grass roots, community led and held in the city centre. Palmy Unleashed will reinforce the work undertaken by the Council’s Placemaking Initiative. A Palmy Unleashed activity ‘Movies in The Square’ attracted hundreds to enjoy free outdoor movies.

The story of settlement in Manawatū, the life cycle of the Sun and photography by local school students - once upon a time these things would not have been seen within a mile of each other.

That’s what makes Te Manawa Museum of Art, Science and History special. As a museum without boundaries, it offers an experience like no other. It breaks down traditional museum barriers, becoming a space where diverse communities can mingle, dance and bring new ideas to fruition. Te Manawa is a unique destination, a custodian of important collections of Tāonga Māori, contemporary art, and social and natural history. It takes pride in fostering ground-breaking science and cultural initiatives.

26

Showcase Manawatu

Every day Te Manawa demolishes the old perception of museums as dusty places filled with old things gathered by moustachioed colonial explorers or excitable zoologists in pith helmets. Here visitors can step into history and participate in its stories, or immerse themselves in the science that makes our everyday world tick. An ever-changing calendar of events and exhibitions explores the past, provides information for the present and asks questions about the future. Art, science and history collide in inspiring and surprising ways.

Images supplied by Te Manawa Museum

Te Manawa embraces its place in the global community of museums; in addition to fostering the growth of local talent and New Zealand artists, it also hosts celebrated international exhibitions. It was one of only two national museums to host National Geographic’s 50 Greatest Photographs in 2015, and was the exclusive New Zealand venue to show Mexican artist Frida Kahlo’s distinctive and stunning personal collection of photographs in 2016.

Some visitors may even remember Da Vinci’s Machines, Roman chariots, tarantulas and giant mechanical insects that have passed through over the years. Motorcycles Unleashed was a tremendously popular exhibition that brought together rare motorcycles and the people who ride them, and exemplified the way Te Manawa creates appeal across the cultural spectrum.

That year it brought the London Natural History Museum’s animatronic Dinosaur Encounter to the Southern Hemisphere for the very first time.

Many of its extensive stock of touring exhibitions are high-calibre science interactives exploring themes of sound, light, colour and the human body. The addition of Sunlight – Ihi Kōmaru, designed and built onsite over two years, brings a new level of ambition and commitment to engaging people locally, nationally and internationally.

Sunlight has broken new ground in presenting science to a diverse audience and brings new life to the story of sunlight through interactive games, challenges and dynamic multimedia. It is the first Te Manawa-developed touring show to be completely bi-lingual in both English and Te Reo Māori, making it a uniquely Kiwi experience. Following its inaugural season in Palmerston North, it has wowed museum visitors in New Plymouth, Rotorua, Hamilton and Auckland, and took top honours in the 2016 Museums Aotearoa Awards Regional Science and Technology category. Te Manawa’s semi-permanent exhibitions have a strong Manawatū focus. Te Awa – The River follows the Manawatū River from its source high in the ranges, through the city to the sea. Te Rangi Whenua shares the stories of iwi groups in Manawatū, Rangitikei and Horowhenua regions, and Manawatū Journeys follows the region’s development from settlement to the present day. All have free entry. It is also home to Palmerston North’s historic Santa’s Cave. A seasonal landmark for nearly a century, Santa’s Cave is a kitsch romp through the North Pole as imagined by model-makers and craftsmen for generations. It moved to its permanent place at Te Manawa after relocation of the Farmers Department Store to the Plaza, and continues to delight and amuse locals and visitors alike in December each year. In the spaces between exhibitions, Te Manawa’s community engagement and learning programmes draw people in, connect them with each other and celebrate our collective mana. It could be a weaving demonstration, a model-making workshop, or a lace-making session. It could be children and their caregivers experiencing the tactile, activity-laden space of Kids TM. Every day, people can join in and have their horizons expanded.

Visitors even have the rare chance to see the museum animated after dark through community performance, winter Shakespeare or ‘Nightlight’ events popular with the whole family. A partnership with Centrepoint Theatre, the only professional theatre outside the main centres, opens the back-of-house as ‘The Dark Room’ for a “black box” theatre experience. New life and energy is continually being added to the complex’s eclectic spaces.

Te Manawa is one of Palmerston North’s most stimulating and attractive venues, located in the cultural heart of the city. Its facilities can cater anything from small functions to hosting nearly 200 people. The Te Manawa shop stocks a range of gift items including books, cards, local art and educational toys and puzzles. You can also pick up New Zealand rugby merchandise (supporting the New Zealand Rugby Museum) or even score a piece of a former exhibition. Take the time to browse and find something a little different.

Te Manawa Museum of Art Science and History is open daily. (Closed Good Friday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day)

The perfect host for sports events Manawatu has a great track-record for hosting large-scale sporting events. Assisted by its central location and variety in excellent sporting facilities, Palmerston North and the surrounding region is the destination for thousands competing in national events throughout the year. In the 2016/2017 year Palmerston North hosted 13 national sports events, nine of those were national secondary school events, four were Trans-Tasman events and three international. Central Energy Trust Arena hosted eight of these events. With the range, accessibility and quality of Manawatu facilities, it makes it the perfect place to host large scale sports events. In March 2017, Palmerston North hosted one of the largest indoor sports events in the country. This brought an estimated $1.4m benefit to the local economy. The New Zealand Secondary Schools Volleyball Nationals with 170 teams, including two international teams and 1700 athletes played at Central Energy Trust Arena and Massey University. National secondary school’s basketball, futsal, squash and cycling are all regular annual features. The week of the basketball competition draws in over 800 athletes to the city. Later in 2018, Massey University Sport & Rugby Institute is hosting the New Zealand Barbarians

National 1st XV Rugby with teams across schools throughout New Zealand. The tournament is to be aired live on Sky Sports Rugby Channel. Manawatu Golf Club also played host to the 2017 Lawnmaster Horizon Golf NZ PGA Championship. This tournament attracted 8000 spectators with 50,000 television viewers. The event acted as a major showcase for the local region. Players were contesting for $125,000 prize money and the McDougall Cup. With the inclusion of a Warriors’ pre-season match coupled with the Silver Ferns hosting Jamaica, regional sports fans packed the stands and confirmed top-level games in the provinces has many benefits. Local community events such as the Whanau Tri draws in over 500 participants every year, while the inaugural Te Apiti Whanau Challenge gives people the chance to walk/run in and around our iconic wind turbines. Manawatu’s sporting calendar caters for the entire family and sports enthusiasts.

THE NEW ZEALAND

Rugby Museum

When a museum receives a rugby boot with instructions that it “never be cleaned”, it must be some pretty special dirt. In fact it’s a special boot: that of legendary All Black Don Clarke, complete with its Lancaster Park mud. It’s one of many unique and precious memorabilia items collected and cared for by the New Zealand Rugby Museum. The New Zealand Rugby Museum’s collection is rich and diverse, and represents the evolution over many years of our nation’s favourite game. It’s not just a rugby enthusiast’s treasure trove; it’s a place the whole family can get a kick out of. For those wanting to learn about the history of New Zealand rugby and know some early All Black stories, the displays create a timeline that you can follow from the birth of the game to the present. The museum’s collection of artefacts helps tell the tale - things like the walking stick of Charles Monro, ‘father of New Zealand rugby’. Old film from as far back as 1905 lets visitors see the rugby of yesteryear as their parents and grandparents saw it.

The big screen plays rugby highlights all day, and can be customised to display games from whatever era is desired. Fancy some Christian Cullen? Or how about some of the mighty Buck Shelford? Visitors need only ask and staff will make it happen. Don’t leave empty-handed. Thousands of visitors from all over the world have had their photograph taken in front of the gigantic Haka wall, with the All Blacks in the background. Other souvenirs are available in the gift shop. The game’s at the heart of our culture and history, and the New Zealand Rugby Museum keeps it beating. New Zealand Rugby Museum, Open Daily 10am – 5pm Te Manawa, 326 Main St Palmerston North www.rugbymuseum.co.nz

The museum mixes history with high-energy activity. Visitors can measure their speed and tackling skill against local legend Aaron Cruden, or see if their kicking boot can measure up to Andrew Mehrtens. Those who want to experience life in the front row can pack down like Keven Mealamu and Charlie Faumuina against the scrum machine. The current record holder is an international rugby prop from Georgia who managed an incredible 498kg.

The Square also hosts the biggest New Year’s Eve celebration in the region with a great range of quality entertainment. The New Zealand Rural Games are returning in March, with top competitors from throughout New Zealand and Australia participating in traditional rural-themed sports. There’s plenty of live music, entertainment and fun ‘have-a-go’ events and a great taste of the country within the city centre. The Central Energy Trust Arena is the city’s largest facility that hosts indoor and outdoor sports events at all levels, including regional and national tournaments. The New Zealand Rural Games are returning to Palmerston North’s Square in 2018.

The Arena is also the home of speedway. Spectators from around the world and New Zealand make a pilgrimage to Palmy throughout the season for a range of competitions, including the Superstock Team’s Champs. Speedway nights are full of action, excitement, noise and the sound of passionate supporters. The city is certainly pumping when speedway fans are in town. Motorsports fans also get to enjoy the thrill of nearby Manfeild, particularly during the weekend of the New Zealand Grand Prix. The Woodville Moto-cross Grand Prix is another highlight early in the year for adrenalin junkies. Speedway thrills provide plenty of action for spectators.

Summer is welcomed to the city with a bang – via the annual Fireworks Over the River. Thousands line the side of the Manawatu River and beyond for views of the fireworks lit from hilltop Anzac Park. Family entertainment is easy to find in the city, and most of it is free. There are inspiring parks throughout the city with playgrounds, sports fields, paddling pools and of course duck ponds. The beautiful Victoria Esplanade has been a magnet for families for decades and you can’t miss taking it all in with a ride on the miniature railway. The Esplanade comes alive with its own celebration in March with a day of entertainment, activities, food and fun. The entire city enjoys the annual fireworks display over the Manawatu River.
