WHAT IS THE NORTH THOMPSON COMMUNITIES FOUNDATION? The North Thompson Communities Foundation (NTCF) is a charitable society, comprised of community volunteers from the North Thompson Valley. These communities include Blue River, Avola, Vavenby, Clearwater, Blackpool, Birch Island, Little Fort, Darfield, Barriere, Simpcw Nation, Louis Creek, and McLure.

MISSION STATEMENT The North Thompson Communities Foundation awards grants through local charitable organizations generated from responsibly managed donations and legacies which promote community capacity building and unity throughout the North Thompson Valley.

Board Bios Cheryl Thomas — Chair Cheryl is the current Chairperson for the NT Communities Foundation. Cheryl’s has years of volunteer experience and education within the many factions of the NT valley’s communities. Cheryl is an active member of two Province Wide Boards – the BC Food Systems Network and the BC Rural Network. Valley wide: she contributes to the Literacy, success by 6 and Aboriginal Engagement community tables. She is secretary for the McLure Monument Society, a Director for the Clearwater and District Chamber of Commerce and the Clearwater Festival and Events Society. Cheryl also contributes her time to several Service Groups.

Barry Banford - Vice Chair Barry, was born in Saskatchewan and has lived in British Columbia since 1979. He was employed by the Ministry of Forests and Range and his 28 year career has taken him to Quesnel, the Queen Charlotte Islands and Clearwater. Barry has a Bachelors of Education degree and a Renewable Resource diploma. He has been involved with coaching Boy Scouts and Volunteer Fire Departments and served as a Clearwater Improvement District Trustee for two years. Barry is currently serving as a Board Member for the District Of Clearwater. Barry was involved with the original Steering Committee of the Foundation and is happy to be involved again as he believes that the Foundation can be a perpetual funding source to support and enhance our communities for generations to come.

Hazel Wadlegger — Treasurer Hazel was born and raised in Wells Gray Park. Her family own and operate a logging and sawmill company, while also manage a cow/calf operation of 75 head. Hazel served as a School Trustee for 13 years. She was involved with organizing Red Cross Swim Lessons in Clearwater for 30 years, and was also involved with Clearwater Minor Hockey and Figure Skating. Hazel is a founding member of the Foundation, a member of the Wells Gray Outdoors Club, where she helps to coach young children in the Rabbit Program, and is a Rotarian.

Susan Garland — Secretary Susan is a resident of Louis Creek and has called the North Thompson Valley home since 1994. She is a founding member of the North Thompson Volunteer and information Centre. Her community involvement includes being a committee member of the North Thompson Sustainable Watershed Committee, including the Mclure Wildfire Monument Society and the Barriere and District Heritage Society. She has been an active member of the community garden in Barriere and the North Thompson Valley Garden Club. Susan knows that it is important to “be the change we wish to see in the world” and believes the Foundation has the potential to become a very significant vehicle for future heath of our community, the North Thompson Valley.

Kevin Bryant Kevin Bryant has lived in the Lower North Thompson Valley for 7 years. He is the owner of Media Esteem Business Services which was established in 2009 and is located in Barriere. He specializes in Web Design, Web Hosting, and Graphic Design. Kevin has been actively involved with a number of local volunteer organizations, including the Thompson Valley Players, the Barriere & District Chamber of Commerce and the North Thompson Valley Volunteer and Information Centre. He feels passionate about helping to make our valley a better place for the future.

Mike Fennell Mike was born and raised in Chu Chua and Barriere in the North Thompson. After high school he worked for Craigmont Mines Exploration for seven years on prospects in western Canada. He was then employed by Greyhound Lines Of Canada as a Coach driver for three years. Mike went on to be a Professional Firefighter for the City of Prince George and retired in 2004, after 27 years.

Monty Lutz Monty was born and raised in central Alberta. After grade nine, he went to work in the Alberta oil patch for fifteen years. Then he moved out to the small community of Tatla Lake in the West Chilctin country between Williams Lake and Bella Coola. Monte and his wife had a small ranch and trucking business there for thirty years. Five years ago they moved to Avola. In 2013, they attended the North Thompson Fall Fair and were impressed that it is done with volunteers, mostly seniors. This experience inspired him to find a way to become more involved in helping to support our valley. The North Thompson Communities Foundation is providing Monte the opportunity to become involved with helping to support local community projects.

Board Bios Ted Richardson Ted brings a wide a range of experience from the natural resource management field (forestry, fisheries, wildlife, and parks). He has been involved with several organizations and groups in the Clearwater area including the Wells Gray Country Services Committee, the Clearwater & District Chamber of Commerce, the Community Resource Centre for the North Thompson, Wells Gray Community Forest Corporation, and the Clearwater Drug and Alcohol Task Force. Ted is a Registered Forest Technologist specializing in developing and implementing strategic plans, and the health and welfare of our environment is of key consideration in all of his endeavors.

Celena Slater She is a member of the Simpcw First nation Band, formerly the North Thompson Indian Band. Living in Chu-Chua most of my life. She has been employed by the Band for numerous years, until her retirement in 2014. Her interests are gardening and beautifying my home and surroundings. She loves to home decorate using unique materials. She has a strong belief in helping others. She participates as a Board member with the North Thompson Communities Foundation, as well as, volunteer her time with elders, at family functions and organizing community events.

Gina Walchuk Gina and husband Barry Walchuk have two grown sons. She has lived in Clearwater for the last 29 years. Gina was self employed in the Convenience Store/Gas bar business for many years and is currently the Branch Manager of Clearwater’s Interior Savings Credit Union. She owns and raises Arabian horses and is active in the horse community, particularly the local 4-H club. Gina believes that it is important to be actively involved in our community and is pleased to be on the Board of the North Thompson Communities Foundation.

Sandy Wetterstrom Born and raised in Vancouver she graduated from UBC. Sandy spent the next thirty years in the Robson Valley. Work took them north to Houston where Sandy combined her two interests, adult literacy and gardening, into a job with the literacy organization, Houston Link to Learning. As the Coordinator of the Houston Community Garden she worked to provide a safe, inclusive space to learn about growing and harvesting food. She held this position for four years until her move to Clearwater. While in Houston, Sandy was actively involved in the community. A founding member of Healthy Options for People and the Earth Society, she initiated the Nutrition Coupon Program for the Pleasant Valley Community Market.

How Are Donations Made? Anyone can make a donation to a community foundation. Contributions are completely flexible: cash, real estate, stock, artwork, insurance, or volunteer work. All manner of personal, business, or charity funds are a worthwhile way to help your community. Donations can be made directly at any Interior Savings Credit union Branch. How Can I Volunteer With The NTCF? The NTCF is a collaborative network of volunteers from across the North Thompson Valley who believe that by working together we can enhance community capacity and build sustainability across all social sectors. In order to build on that vision we need people who provide a variety of perspectives and bring an array of skills and expertise.
