VILLAGE WEEKEND GOES GREEN This year’s Village Weekend, to be held on Saturday 7th July, will have a change of scenery. For the first time in several years, many of the activities will take place on the Village Green. But such is the size of our annual extravaganza, further events will be taking place on the school playing field, where there will also be a car boot sale (starting at 11am).

Special Guest Star for the occasion will once again be Tim Bentinck, who plays David Archer in The Archers.

We shall be entertained through the afternoon by old favourites the Ugly Dog Skiffle Band. Other highlights include a family dog show (bring your pet pooch, to see if it has the waggiest tail), silly sports (for adults, and a separate competition for children), country dancing, various stalls, bouncy castle, a Noddy train (tractor rides around the village), a raffle and the ever popular greasy pole.

There’ll be a hog roast on the Green, and teas provided too. In addition the King’s Arms will be staging a beer festival throughout the day.

In the evening, the fun continues, this time at the Bowls Club where our usual caterers will provide their famed barbecue, and, after a set by the skiffle band, Shouldham’s favourite disco, Wally’s, will get us all dancing. A marquee will be erected outside the club to accommodate all the revellers. Tickets are £8 (over-18s only).

SADDLES SOAR!

SPECIAL GUEST- GUESS WHO? TUM-TI-TUM-TITUM-TI-TUM

An impressively large number of villagers (was it about 50, or was that double vision?) took to their bikes for the annual cycle ride, held on Sunday 6 May. The weather remained fine throughout the day, leading to many severe thirsts that were admirably quenched by some fine hostelries. After a swift pit stop at Barton Bendish’s Spread Eagle (thanks to them for opening early), we called in at the Grumbling Publican before heading for the Swan at Gooderstone where Geoff Hipperson and his band of helpers provided the barbecue (thank you to all of them!).

The journey homeward passed off smoothly, thanks to the hospitality of Oxborough’s Bedingfield Arms, and the heroic efforts of Debbie Nicholls, who not only drove the back-up vehicle throughout the day, but also found boot-space for the refreshments that were eagerly consumed around Boughton pond. Apart from a couple of wayward cyclists who happened upon the George & Dragon at Wereham, the merry band then continued (some via Fincham’s Swan and Timbers) on to the finishing post at Shouldham’s King’s Arms. Special mention should go to some of this year’s youngest participants: Kate, Rowan and Emily O – well done! Commiserations to Annabel, who endured a spectacular crash (but thankfully wasn’t badly hurt). Finally thanks to John Dovey, who organised the event.

SHOULDHAM BOWLS CLUB NEWS The Bowls Club continues to put on a regular programme of social events for its members. During July or August, a barbecue is planned (ask at the club for details). Then on 29th September there will be a Medieval Banquet, the first for three years. This will include entertainment from vocalist Brian London, and a three-course meal will be served by wenches. There will also be a prize for the best-dressed man and the best-dressed woman, so get into the spirit of the evening and have a really good time. Tickets cost £11.50 including the meal (soup, main course, dessert, cheese and biscuits, plus three glasses of wine) and will be available at the bar, or ring Elsie (347636). Numbers will be limited, so book early.

Don’t forget you can join the club as a social member. You don’t have to be a bowler, but if you would like to learn to bowl someone at the club will always be willing to give you a helping hand.

Shouldham FC success It has been another good year for Shouldham FC, with the under-14 team reaching the semi-finals of the county cup, the finals of the league cup and finishing second in the league. The under-nine team also goes from strength to strength, with an encouraging number of new players signing.

The Parish Council has developed a website which can be accessed on http://shouldhampc.norfolkparishes.gov.uk It is not necessary to log-in or register to be able to access all the pages. If you have any suggestions for inclusions on the website, please don’t hesitate to let a member of the Parish Council know.

Street Numbers Following the survey in the Parish Plan, it is proposed to number the principal roads in the village that do not already have numbers. This doesn’t mean you will lose your house name. The numbering will be carried out by the Borough Council and there will be a meeting in the village hall on Monday 9th July between 7pm and 8pm, for everyone to have an opportunity to see what is proposed. Details of how the Borough Council allocates street numbers can be seen on www.westnorfolk.gov.uk/snn or a copy obtained from the parish clerk.

The Village Green Residents may have noticed the disappearance of the seat near the caravan site overlooking the Green, which had to be dismantled because it was broken. A new one has been commissioned and should be in place in the near future.

The Norfolk Rural Community Council has awarded a grant to the Parish Council to provide wooden bollards around parts of the Village Green in order to protect it.

These should be installed this summer.

Footpaths Please can dog owners ensure that all footpaths are kept ‘dog litter’ free by using the bins provided. Parents taking children to school along Lamsons Lane in particular have expressed concerns for their children’s health.

News from St Martin-atShouldham School Building work at the school Thank you to you all for your patience and understanding while the building work is underway. This will be completed at the end of July and we do not foresee, or plan, any more work in the near future.

IT in the Community Please note that the school’s IT sessions each Thursday from 9am to 10.30am will finish on June 28th. They will resume in October. All local people are invited to come along and join the sessions, which include word processing, email, internet, digital photography and much more.

The annual canvass for the Register of Electors begins at the end of August, when a form and reply-paid return envelope will be personally delivered to every property in West Norfolk. Completion of the form is both obligatory and important, because the register is used not just for electoral purposes, but also by many financial service providers, for example, mortgages, loans or new accounts.

Anyone whose name is not on the register will not only be unable to vote at any elections there may be in 2008, but will also be likely to have problems using any service that involves a check of the register.

The form is intended for the present occupiers of an address.

The names of anyone expected to be resident at the address on 15th October and who is already 18, or will reach that age by 30th November 2008, needs to be on the form and the names of anyone no longer at the address deleted. Forms received by owners of properties that are either already empty or are expected to be so on 15th October simply need the ‘Property empty on 15th October’ box ticking and returning.

This will avoid the issue of reminders.

Saturday 25th Sunday 26th Monday 27th August 10am – 5pm, All Saints Church: ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH FLOWER FESTIVAL . Festival to run throughout the Bank Holiday weekend.
