A NOTE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF SHORT+SWEET Welcome to Short+Sweet Sydney 2010 – the ninth season of the festival and the biggest yet. This year we’ve reached the spectacular milestone of producing and presenting the work of 1,000 Australian writers. This really is an impressive accomplishment and the result of the hard work and dedication of many people, most especially Short+Sweet Theatre – Artistic Director Alex Broun who is a constant and untiring advocate for new work and new Australian writers.

In addition to theatre we also present short-form festivals and events in Dance, Music, Cabaret and Musical Theatre and have specialist programs for Children, Youth and Community.While this seems like a diverse set of artforms in fact all Short+Sweet programs have two things in common.Firstly – they’re all ten minutes or less and secondly – they all offer showcase and creative opportunities to emerging and established artists.

The best things often come in small packages – and this is certainly true of the wonderful Short+Sweet Festival.

The coming year has a host of challenges and opportunities.

This includes the biggest tour ever of our popular touring program Shorter+Sweeter (six actors and eight plays) with a tour spanning 42 venues across the country (every state and territory except Tasmania) showcasing some great writing by Short+Sweet playwrights. Regional audiences love the ‘bite-sized’ nature of our programming style.The works are engaging and entertaining and of a high artistic standard. After the tour winds up in August it’s planned to take the company to SE Asia, India and beyond. For years now I’ve been describing Short+Sweet as the Biggest Little Play Festival in the World. Technically that’s still correct, but really we’ve outgrown the description.

The last year has been at times a challenging one for Short+Sweet. But not for the reasons you might think.

But the results have been very satisfying and we’ve found new friends and partners along the way including Rachel Fothergil (Chapel Off Chapel, Melbourne), Olivia Ansell (Western Sydney Dance Action), Robert Love (Parramatta Riverside Theatres), Bruce Carmichael (Canberra Theatre Centre), Craig Cooper (Edge Theatres, Auckland), Lynne Williams (NIDA) and Les Currie (Parade Theatres). The coming year is looking to continue the growth pattern with brand new festivals in India (Mumbai and Delhi) and The Philippines (Manila) additional regional programs (Newcastle and Bathurst) and expanded programs in Canberra, Kuala Lumpur, Melbourne and Singapore. So sit back, relax and enjoy the show and the fruits of our labours... Short+Sweet – Theatrical Fruit salad? Hmm. I think I’ll keep that metaphor to myself. As Minister for the Arts, and as a long term patron of the arts it gives me great pleasure to add my support and congratulations to the biggest festival of ten minute theatre in the world. Over the last decade the Short+Sweet festival has brought the best of Australian and international writing talent to Australian audiences, showcasing the inventiveness, creativity and continual evolution of our artistic and cultural sector.

If you haven’t been along to see any of the other programs I urge you to give them a try. Ten minute dance is a great way to see the work of a host of new choreographers and the ten minute musical program is really a treat for the senses.

The Global Financial Crisis did make securing sponsorship more difficult but the main ‘issue’ was a consequence of our own success with expanded programs in Sydney, Melbourne and Kuala Lumpur and totally new annual festivals in Auckland, Brisbane and Canberra putting additional stresses on a small and already overstretched team.

It was in a small corner of Newtown that this – now global – festival of short theatre works first hit our stages.

We are endowed with many young and emerging artists. “Short+Sweet” offers the ideal platform to give life and opportunity to our rich young pool of directors, play wrights and actors. This event also gives the general community the opportunity to see first hand this group of talented artists at work. It therefore gives to each person present an exciting opportunity to participate for themselves either as audience or artist in this rich harvest of creative and performing arts here in Sydney. In 2010–11 Short+Sweet will bring more than eight performances a night to the Chapel off Chapel Theatre in Melbourne, and in Sydney audiences will experience a performance of the bestselling French novel Oscar and the Lady in Pink, by Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt. Now it has spread its wings to the four corners of the world showcasing some of our brightest writers, directors and performers in Sydney, Melbourne and now even Singapore. As a platform for these talented individuals nothing can beat Short+Sweet. It is an opportunity to try things, to experiment and to discover the beauty and power of performance. Short+Sweet sprung into life on January 9th, 2002 at the old Newtown Theatre, then located at St George’s Hall, which is back up King Street towards the Newtown Station. From those humble beginnings Short+Sweet Theatre has grown over the last decade to become the largest ten minute theatre festival in the world and the Short+Sweet family is now a very large one. Over the last decade we have produced over 2000 ten minute theatre works, including plays by over 1000 Australian writers, provided roles to over 3,500 actors, and utilised the talents of over 1500 directors and hundreds of technical crew. Indeed take a look at any theatre programme anywhere in Australia, and there’s no doubt you will see someone who has been involved in Short+Sweet over the past decade. For me personally my involvement in Short+Sweet stretches back to that very first night in 2002 when I was lucky enough to have one of my own plays performed: the appropriately titled Saturday Night Newtown Sunday Morning Enmore. The production incidentally was directed by the Executive Director of Short+Sweet International, Mark Cleary.

Since then I have personally gone on to run Short+Sweet festivals in Melbourne, Brisbane, Singapore, Rockhampton, Auckland, Delhi – and this is my sixth Short+Sweet Sydney as Festival Director ! And through Short+Sweet, and the skill development it has provided for me as a writer (as it has done for so many others learning the complex craft of writing for the stage), I have now gone on to establish myself as one of the world’s leading ten minute playwrights with over 60 plays produced in over 500 productions across the globe as well as running our very successful Short+Sweet Playwrighting courses across Australia and internationally. Without Short+Sweet many of those opportunities would have not have arisen. So I am personally grateful for my involvement in Short+Sweet and also to have worked, laughed and sometimes cried alongside the countless actors, directors, backstage crew and fellow writers who have graced our stages. I’d like to thank everyone involved in bringing this our tenth Short+Sweet Sydney to the stage, especially our hardworking crew headed up by Lydia Kelly and Jamie Exworth, the valuable contribution of the Actor’s Committee, Sarah Ford and Jessica Verburg in

the Short+Sweet office, Johann Walraven and his team at Newtown Theatre as well as everyone at NIDA who always make us feel so welcome. But this Short+Sweet Festival, along with all others, would not happen without the wonderful actors, directors and writers who volunteer their time to create, play and learn with us. Indeed each Short+Sweet festival is nothing without the artists who create it. Some are new to the ten minute format, some are now old hands – but each and everyone contributes something to the magic that is Short+Sweet. In the end it is their festival and I hope you enjoy being part of their creativity tonight. If it’s your first time, welcome to the world of Short+Sweet. Hi, my name is Karen Cobban and I was lucky enough to win Best Actress for my role as ‘Kylie’ in Frank Leggett’s wonderfully moving play ‘Mr and Mrs Metcalfe enjoy the music of Elton John’ at Short+Sweet in 2010. This award would not have been possible for me without Felicity Nichol’s wonderful direction and her beautiful attention to detail, Jeremy Brull’s lovely camera work and my co-actor Graham Yate’s ‘Keith’, for without Keith there would have been no Kylie. For me, winning the award was a dream come true. I’d like to give a special thanks to Mark Morrissey for his time and advice. The Movie Network Channel for their fabulous prize. I’d also like to thank Kate Toon for developing an amazing website for me and to thank Utopia for their generous prize.

Celia Kelly – Actress Winner of the Short+Sweet Theatre Award for Best New Talent Taking part in the last two Short+Sweet Festivals has been a truly amazing experience. It was a great opportunity to exercise everything I had learnt in my four years at Drama School, while also giving me the freedom and independence I had been looking forward to. I also met and worked with some wonderful people. Many doors have since been opened for me, including the educational theatre tour I have just completed around Australia, which has now given me the travel bug! I plan to move to London in the new year to further pursue my career in acting, which I am extremely excited about.

Since winning Short+Sweet Sydney as Best Director, Wildcard and Overall Production in 2010, I have continuously studied directing, learning from integral, highly accomplished, and genuinely passionate industry professionals such as Fraser Corfield, Dean Carey, Mark Morrissey and Sam Strong. I have developed and directed short theatre works for young people with ATYP and Shopfront Theatre and am currently Assistant Director on ‘Desiree Din and the Red Forest’, an exciting, new play by Max Mellor, directed by Fraser Corfield, premiering at ATYP in November, 2010.

Frank Leggett – Script Writer Winner of the Short+Sweet Theatre Award for Best Script In 2010 my play, Mr and Mrs Metcalfe Enjoy The Music Of Elton John, won Best Script at the Short+Sweet Gala Final and nobody was more surprised than myself. This competition offers a unique opportunity for aspiring playwrights. It doesn’t matter who you are, what you have achieved or how many years you have been in the business. The scripts are judged anonymously so a rank amateur has just as much chance of having a script produced as the ten-minuteplay-king, Alex Broun. And thank God, say I. The Metcalfes was the first script for the theatre I had ever written. It is a fascinating experience when something you have visualised is ultimately performed on stage. Mind you, the input from the director and actors means the finished product is never exactly as you imagined – invariably it’s much better. Sitting in the 700-strong audience at the NIDA Playhouse watching my play was exhilarating. To hear the applause was addictive. To win Best Script was astonishing. Needless to say, I have two scripts entered in Short+Sweet 2011.
