Welcome . . . Strooth! What a couple of month’s it’s been. Since the last issue of our mag there’s been oodles going on . . . if you haven’t been down to the Pier recently then may I suggest you take a wander down . . . you’d hardly recognise the place ~ it’s fabulous! The long awaited opening of Urban Reef down on the Overstrand came about at the beginning of April and saw a hugely successful opening night for Mark Cribb and his team. I would like to wish them all the luck for the future ~ if my girls start taking extended lunches I’ll sure know where to find them:-) Also open down at the seafront is the new Sorted Surf shop, even better than their hugely successful shop on Sea Road ~ it’s packed with Surf and Beach Wear and all the accessories any surfer or style conscious beachgoer could wish for ~ well done to Sean and Shaun:-) Last but not least, you’ll all have probably heard that the new designer Surf Pods are now completed ~ attended by local and national TV coverage, Wayne Hemingway, designer of the Pods, formally opened them on Friday 15th May. Top all this off with the new Harvester Restaurant and the long established Coasters Restaurant and Boscombe seafront really does have something for everyone! For anyone who’s ever doubted ~ Boscombe’s on the up! Support groups for families and friends of alcoholics How do alcoholics affect families and friends? Alcoholism is a family disease. The disease affects all those who have a relationship with a problem drinker. Those of us closest to the alcoholic suffer the most, and those who care the most can easily get caught up in the behaviour of another person. We react to the alcoholic's behaviour. We focus on them, what 6
The only requirement for membership in Al-Anon and Alateen is that a person be affected by someone else’s alcoholism or problem drinking. Some members have a relationship with a drinker who is still actively drinking, while other drinkers have already achieved sobriety. Some members have chosen to maintain their relationship with the drinker or past drinker while others have cut ties or moved on. Regardless of their current circumstances, members’ experiences have resulted in hurt and loss. Their common experiences allow people to come together for mutual aid and support. In an Al-Anon meeting, members share their own experiences, strength, and hope with each other, which helps each of them on their individual paths to recovery.

You can't turn on the news these days without hearing yet another tale of dodgy expense claims submitted by MPs we've chosen to represent us. They're claiming for everything from tap washers to relining the moats of their country estates. They're claiming repayments on mortgages that were paid off two years earlier. What sort of environment do these people inhabit? In the real world the average person looks forward to paying off their mortgage for years, and can tell you the exact date (and probably time) they can finally crawl out from under the millstone that's hung around their neck for a quarter of a century. Should we really expect to be represented by people who are so rich they don't even notice when they've paid of a major debt? But perhaps we shouldn't be so surprised that most MPs have put in dodgy expense claims. Perhaps we should be more surprised that we expected anything else of them in the first place. Blair, Brown, Cameron ~ can you imagine any of them doing a real job? A day's real work would kill them (as it would me, to be perfectly blunt, but I'm not asking anyone to vote for me). And as for the spouse who claimed expenses for adult movies, I don't think we should judge him too harshly. After all, Sainsbury's now has a shelf specifically for adult cereals! I've bought a few packets myself, hoping a lap dancer might fall out of them, but so far no luck:-)

Town News North and East Bournemouth Teams Win Football Event Two youth teams ~ from the Boscombe and Throop and Muscliffe areas of Bournemouth ~ coached by Safer Neighbourhood Officers have won Bournemouth's first Football Focus tournament that was held in April at the Littledown Centre.. The teams were divided into two age groups, 12-14 and 15-17. Boscombe Boy's Team were the winners of the 12-14 tournament, while the Throop and Muscliffe Team won the senior title. The Boscombe Boy's Team also received the 'Fair Play' award, alongside the Eagles Senior Team, for their sportsmanship on the pitch. Football Focus is an initiative that involves Dorset Police working in partnership with the National Association for the Care and Rehabilitation of Offenders (NACRO) and Bournemouth Borough Council to tackle anti-social behaviour through sport.

Focus began in Poole in 2005 and has been so successful that other districts around Dorset have taken up the idea, including Weymouth, Portland and East Dorset. Sergeant Guy Nicholas of the East Cliff, Springbourne and Boscombe West Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “I was involved in setting up Focus, in Poole, a few years ago and I saw how it helped to bring different community groups, including young people, their families, youth workers and the police together so I am thrilled that we have been able to implement the project in Bournemouth.

The Focus project in Bournemouth is now up and running with nine Safer Neighbourhood Officers trained in football coaching across Bournemouth. Then there’s the fact I no longer have that awful smoker’s smell on my clothes and in my hair ~ I didn’t realise how bad the smell was ~ didn’t realise I smelt at all ~ now that I don’t smoke I can tell when someone walks into a room after having been outside to have a quick cigarette ~ it stinks! That leads me onto another plus point for my E-Cig, I can smoke it anywhere. It is totally legal to smoke in any location and within any premises that introduced a ban on tobacco based cigarettes ~ as the E-Cig can also be used as an addition to tobacco based cigarettes ~ use your normal fags as you currently do and then use the E-Cigs where you are unable to smoke normal fags due to the smoking ban ~ it’s at the discretion of the owner of the premises so best to ask before you start puffing on one in your local pub or restaurant:-) I am so impressed with my E-Cig that I have decided to host an open evening to share what I know with as many people as will listen:-) It’ll give people a chance to sample an E-Cig and ask any questions they may have. Spotlight on . . . Creative Kids There is no doubt all children benefit from engaging in the arts, but when it's just the privileged few, what happens to the ones left behind, the ones that need it the most? This is a question social entrepreneur, Cary Lightfoot has been asking and she thinks she's found the answer in Creative Kids. The charity was set up this year to provide a range of challenging and inspired activities for children and young people aged 4 ~ 16. Their objective; to initiate, develop and produce ground breaking programs that encourage children and young people to explore their creative potential. The programs on offer include performance arts, arts and crafts and outdoor pursuits. This summer Creative Kids are planning an Arts Tour of six holiday clubs in Bournemouth. The week-long programs will bring local drama & dance practitioners, costume designers, storytellers, puppeteers and theatrical make-up artists together with local children to inspire them in a series of workshop-led activities that will be held together by a Creative Kids Activity Leader and existing holiday club staff. Cary enthuses, “For the most part, children attending holiday clubs come from working families on lowincomes. Without the benefit of 'Working Families Tax 12
Credits' children could not attend holiday club, let alone afford to go to a summer arts school. Our projects improve opportunities for local children by providing positive and participatory arts programs that everyone can afford”.

The Arts Tour is unique in the way Creative Kids are using existing infrastructures to deliver their arts activities, thus enabling each provision to make a huge difference by adding enormous value to the experience of all those involved. Another date for your diary is The Creative Kid's Carnival held on Saturday 29th August. The charity are organising a free children's arts festival at Kings Park, Bournemouth ~ for more details see the entertainment section on page 18. Future plans include an outreach program targeting vulnerable groups such as young offenders, young mums and young people in care. Additionally Creative Kids hold regular themed Charity Gala Balls as a means to raise funds and awareness of their work in the community. Get Gardening Perennial Beauty The season for outdoor entertaining is upon us, the time when we can get full benefit from the 'outdoor room'. One group of plants, perennials, can help to deliver results that you can be proud of whilst still allowing plenty of deck-chair time. Perennials are so versatile that many will thrive in pots and containers on paved patios, balconies and decks. Emerging every spring, they grow up quickly in the rising temperatures. By June many are already flowering, bringing joyful colour to the garden. As well as beautiful flowers, many have attractive foliage too. If space is limited, it's important to choose plants that deliver in more than one way, or over a longer time frame, resulting in maximum ornamental value. Four evenings are being organised, the first two for Meat and Seafood lovers on Monday 29 and Tuesday 30 June, and the third and fourth evenings for Vegetarians and Vegans on Wednesday 1 and Thursday 2 July. Activities will be delivered in three separate arenas consisting of workshops in arts and crafts, performance arts and competitions in outdoor pursuits (held in and around the skate park).

It's fine in the winter to stay inside making stews and soups and perhaps do a little knitting, but the Great British summertime calls for ''Outside time'', whether it be in our own back gardens with a barbeque or down at Boscombe beach with a surf board and a picnic lunch. When it comes to mealtimes we want to spend less time in a hot kitchen and more time socialising and having fun. Here are some suggestions for simple and impressive summer dishes. They can all be prepared ahead and all of them would be equally impressive and delicious in plastic containers on the beach or on a more exotic buffet table. ● Add pomegranate syrup and fresh pomegranate seeds to shop bought humus. It looks beautiful and boosts the vitamin C and goodness. Serve with flat breads or wrap up in a tortilla with lots of salad. ● Keep a stock of easy-to-use store cupboard items on hand. Think Mediterranean with items like olives, marinated vegetables, and feta cheese in the fridge. They are lovely served with a green salad and topped with balsamic vinaigrette. ● If you have even the tiniest garden space, try growing your own salad leaves. It will save you money and you can pick as you need. ● If you are cooking pasta for dinner, cook extra and make a pasta salad the next day.
Linguini and Pesto Salad Serves 2 500g cooked linguini 2 lemons Black pepper Toasted pine nuts
4tbl Shop-bought or homemade pesto sauce. 1 clove garlic
Method Put the linguini in a bowl add the pesto, crushed garlic and the zest of the two lemons. Garnish with a generous sprinkling of black pepper and pine nuts.

A Lighter Look on Life by Rachel Skinner I have the most brilliant Dad. Yes I do. He is amazing, understanding and an absolute gem, a real diamond. An absolute ruby. So with Father’s Day looming, the question is, what do you buy the manly figure that bought you sweets and dried your tears when you didn't win the egg and spoon race? Socks? Mmm . . . practical, yet not very original. A handkerchief with their initials on . . . very 80's darling ~ slightly dated in this day and age though hey, especially if it is not Gucci! A crate of his favourite beer? Oh yes, now you're talking. Upon careful observation a few Tetley's or a few cheeky pints of Guiness always go down well (Why do older men drink "proper" hops like?). And, if you wanted to push the boat out, crack open the whiskey and settle down for a good old trip down memory lane, back in the day when they had a head full of hair and a penchant for driving Ford Capri's or old style motorbikes. Watch for the glisten in their eyes and recall the antics of too many rum 'n' cokes whilst either jiving the night away or glued to the T.V. embracing James Bond in all his glory. 20
Father, Pops, Dad, Grandad, (yep, father figures come in all shapes and sizes) your straight talking advice normally makes sense, your way of seeing the big picture and calming mum down after too many glasses of vino does actually indeed deserve a medal. We (especially me) love the fact that no-one is good enough for your little girls and that you are secretly proud of your ‘follow in your footsteps’ sons . . . we know . . . we know that they still drive you bloomin’ crazy! That's why we love and respect you! I have been blessed, my true Dad is not my biological Dad, yet he has seen me happy, successful and also totally crushed at different times in my highly unpredictable life. Yet he is always there to pick up the pieces, however sharp they are!
