LETTER fter we first launched Inspired Living last spring, I knew we needed to have a bridal issue at some point. From the very beginning, we’ve been using wedding photographers to shoot our photos, and we’ve collaborated with many of the area’s top wedding professionals—event planners, gown boutiques, paper designers, hair and makeup artists—to contribute to Inspired Living’s signature look. While our overall audience isn’t necessarily bridal, our content appeals to both the bridal and non-bridal demographic: bright, beautiful photos of well-designed things and ideas, all of which can be found in our very own community. So a bridal issue? It just makes sense. The tough part was figuring out what to cover. We only had a few pages to showcase the area’s entire, bustling bridal community. So we focused on what we feel we do best: food (cakes!), fashion (gowns and tuxes), décor (unique centerpieces) and local hot spots (wedding venues). Speaking of hot spots, I’m simply amazed by all of the stunning, original wedding venues we have in this area. See for yourself on page 41. I’m also amazed by the strength and support in the local wedding vendor community. The bridal market is jam-packed here, and you’d think that would lead to a lot of back-stabbing and cattiness. But in my experience working with these professionals over the past year, I’ve seen much more unity than division. They all carry the same goal of practicing their art or trade to the best of their ability, and they root each other on in doing so. When a hair or makeup artist can’t make a photo shoot, they’ll gladly give me a list of other qualified artists they recommend. Photographers go to lunch together. Wedding planners publicly admire the work of their counterparts. It’s so encouraging to see such humility in what could otherwise be deemed a cutthroat environment. The moral of the story? It pays to support others. Also, if you’re newly engaged or you know someone who is, you can be sure you’re in good hands. Good, honest, talented, humble hands. If you’re not engaged and prefer our regular, non-bridal content, your wish is granted: this issue contains several of our customary ideas and information in our monthly department pages. And next month we’ll be back with fresh content for the spring season. See you then.

You too can rock the style of the ’40s-era performers with a few classic color choices. False lashes are optional. Kevin Bellamy, who designed the makeup and costumes for All American Sweethearts, says he looked to yearbooks from the time period to help replicate their understated look. “Nothing too fussy, because the Andrews Sisters were not overly glamorous in appearance.” A milky complexion, brown eye tone, minimal blush and liner—but bright red lip color—will instantly evoke that era. Bellamy also has his performers use false eyelashes, a lighter pair just to enhance the upper eye. He classifies the style as “an evening look for the everyday woman.”
the history of the period. The Andrews Sisters landed 113 singles chart entries on Billboard’s Top 40 between 1938 and 1951, more than the Beatles or Elvis Presley. The sisters became popular at a time when solo acts and Big Band music dominated the American stage. Their signature was encouraging service men and women overseas and they performed for troops at Army, Navy, Marine and Coast Guard bases around the world, as well as actual war zones, hospitals and munitions factories. They also encouraged US citizens to purchase war bonds with their rendition of Irving Berlin’s song “Any Bonds Today?” All American Sweethearts is performed with patriotic banners as backdrops, and items from the period such as vintage suitcases, crates and chairs as set dressings to capture the emotion and nostalgia that the Andrews Sisters helped define. W
ith Lent in full swing, many people continue to look for creative seafood dishes to enjoy while dining out or to create at home. Food experts say seafood remains a popular choice at both casual and high-end restaurants. Fish and seafood dishes lend themselves to various preparations. Assorted ingredients, seasonings and sides blend well with dishes based on aquatic foodstuffs. At Latitudes in Portage, Chef Carl Lindskog says seafood is a popular choice among diners. “More than half of our menu features seafood,” Lindskog says. The chef, who says he enjoys preparing various kinds of seafood dishes, adds that for the past decade,

wherever he’s worked, his menus have been seafood heavy. “We sell quite a bit of tuna, and halibut also does well,” the chef says. Salmon, he says, is also a popular seller at Latitudes. Lindskog says fish and seafood are staples on the menu during Lent and at other times as well. The chef likes to serve a few out-ofthe-ordinary seafood dishes as specials. A Tuna Tempura Sushi Roll is a favorite. “From time to time we run different roll specials,” he says. “I look for what’s in season and what’s the freshest,” Lindskog says about working with various seafood dishes to put on his menu. “Seafood is very important for us (and any steakhouse) to have on the menu,” says Chef Craig Lewkowitz of Four Winds New Buffalo’s Copper Rock Steakhouse. Lewkowitz, who’s also the chef for the
entire Four Winds property, says he rotates fish dishes often and gets fresh seafood and fish deliveries six days a week. “One of our best sellers is salmon,” says the chef, about their market catch/fish of the day selections. Other popular items are mahi mahi and also king salmon out of New Zealand. “On Fridays during Lent we serve a special bouillabaisse,” says Lewkowitz, adding that in other eateries at Four Winds Casino, various seafood creations are offered during the Lenten season. “All the fish we serve is freshly caught and it’s not a frozen product,” he says, about Copper Rock’s seafood menu. Among seafood dishes at Copper Rock is the popular Seafood Tower, which stars fresh seasonal oysters, jumbo lump crabmeat, king crab legs, lobster and colossal prawns. It’s not only a dish that satisfies the appetite, but one that is not your usual offering.

6-ounce piece sushi-grade tuna Salt, for seasoning Pepper, for seasoning Sesame seeds, for coating Potatoes, as many as desired for puree Wasabi, to taste Spinach, as much as desired Olive oil Garlic
Directions Season tuna with salt and pepper. Then coat fish in black and white sesame seeds. Set aside. Make potato puree using personal preferences. Add small quantities of wet wasabi until flavor is reached. SautĂŠ spinach in olive oil and garlic. Use potato as the base and add spinach. Sear tuna for as long as desired and place atop base.

Directions Place butterfly shrimp on a 6-inch oven-proof dish. Salt and pepper to taste. Add Pinot Grigio, minced garlic and shallots. Add basil, making sure basil is soaked in the wine. Add oil. Add bread crumb mixture to top. Sprinkle with paprika. Place the dish in the oven at 450 degrees for 7 minutes. Garnish with fresh basil.

Directions Place first 10 ingredients into a bowl and mix together with a fork until well blended. Gently fold in crab meat and 3/4 cup of Panko bread crumbs using a fork. Fold in just until evenly dispersed. Cover and allow to chill in the refrigerator for 20-30 minutes. Divide the batter into 8 to 10 evenly sized, well-packed patties. Roll each patty in Panko crumbs, ensuring they are evenly coated. Allow the patties to chill another 20-30 minutes in the refrigerator. Preheat a large sauté pan with the butter or oil on medium heat. Pan fry on both sides until golden brown, about 4 minutes each side. Serve with your favorite sauce or garnish. There are three basic sections to the back: upper, middle and lower. It is good to incorporate one to two exercises per section to strengthen the back muscles. For the following exercises, I recommend doing two to three sets of eight to twelve reps. When selecting weights, make sure they are of a size that will feel challenging close to the end of your last few reps.

ONE ARM DUMBBELL ROW
Keep your left foot flat on the floor and hold a dumbbell in your right hand. If you want to support your upper body, place the non-working hand on a bench or your thigh as you lean forward at the waist. Let the weight hang straight down and slightly forward with your arm fully extended. Pull the dumbbell toward your hip, keeping your elbow close to your side. Keeping your back flat and abs tight, pull your elbow as high as you can. At the top, squeeze your shoulder blades together, then lower the weight along the same path. Repeat for reps, then switch arms.
WIDE GRIP LAT PULLDOWN
This exercise should be done on the lat pulldown machine. Sit down facing the machine. Position yourself so that the feet are flat on the ground and legs at a 90 degree bend. Grab the bar so that the hands are outside of the shoulder area. Pull the bar down to your chest and squeeze your shoulder blades behind you. Pause and then return to the starting position.
PUSHUP
This exercise is not only good for the middle back, but it also benefits the shoulders, chest and core. The exercise can be done on hands and toes or hands and knees. A wall can also be used to modify the exercise. Put your hands on the floor or the wall. Lower your body to the ground while keeping your back straight and stomach tight. Keep your neck in line with the rest of your spine. I usually tell my clients once you’ve come down as far as you can, push away the floor.

Lay face down on a mat. Place one hand on top of the other and place your forehead on your hands. Slowly lift your upper body, from your head down to your waist, off the ground.
While holding a bar or dumbbells, bend at the waist, push your glutes back and allow the weights to hang freely straight down from your shoulders. Make sure your knees are slightly bent. Push your hips forward as you rise. Stand straight up without leaning backward at the top. The bar should rest across the top of your thighs. Concentrate on pulling with your back and hip muscles, not your arms, when raising your torso.

Dancing Feet Music, friendship and a great workout—it’s all in an evening’s fun for ballroom dance enthusiasts. With the popularity of TV dance shows, ballroom-style dancing has picked up new devotees of all ages in recent years. Instructors and health experts agree there are holistic benefits for people who are dancing their way to health in mind, body, and spirit.

Physical Benefits
allroom dancing includes different styles of dance like the rumba, tango and foxtrot. All require dancing with a partner using specific choreography, though there’s room for improvisation. Dancing works large and small muscle groups in the legs, hips, and torso, helping to tone and define muscles in these areas. Dancing is also great cardio. If you’ve ever watched Dancing With the Stars, you’ve seen the costumed contestants look winded after a performance. “But don’t be afraid to try it if you have a physical limitation,” says Anthony Coberg, who owns Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Merrillville with his wife Julie. The studio offers group classes and one-on-one private lessons for singles and couples. Their offerings are a popular choice for folks who want to work on their dance skills while improving balance, posture, strength, and stamina. The Cobergs have experience working with people who have back problems and nerve damage, as well as people who use wheelchairs. Dancing, says Coberg, is a way for people to move their bodies while doing something they enjoy. It may sound cheesy, he says, but it’s “magical” to see the transformation in some people who have tried other therapeutic exercises and found their “home” in the dance studio.
Mental Benefits
If you’ve ever led or followed in the ballroom, you know that dancing is also great brain food. “It’s mentally challenging,” says long-time dancer Linda Sargent-Parks. She and her husband Gary are members of the Magic Moments Dinner Dance Club, which hosts five dances a year. When dancing, you have to remember steps and patterns. “The guy has
to ‘drive’ through the crowd and the woman has to do it all backwards and in heels,” Sargent-Parks says. Actions like these stimulate brain function and Coberg adds that dancing has been known to help older adults with dementia.
Social Benefits
Social dancing also has the special benefit of community. The physical activity, combined with fun and socializing, helps reduce stress and can encourage self-esteem and a positive outlook. “It’s a friendly group,” Sargent-Parks says. Dancing events are a great way to meet people, and the community is welcoming of new members. “You don’t need to bring a partner,” she adds. Partners rotate and no one is left sitting around. Social dances are perfect for those who just want to get up and dance. Coberg adds that you don’t have to be of a certain age, build or physical ability. “We’ve had everyone from 15-year-olds to 80-year-olds.” Ballroom dance is a multi-generational activity. Handcrafted features fill a sprawling family estate in St. John
D
an Molchan always knew he and his wife Kelly would build a home on the land his grandfather had purchased 45 years before. The time was right in 2009, and now a rustic mountain ranch with Craftsman features is soul-satisfying— and is part of the 40-acre landscape that’s become the Molchan family compound in St. John, Ind. Just over the rill is Dan’s parents’ home, and beyond that, his sister’s home; another is his son’s home, and another his aunt and uncle’s home. Dan and Kelly beam as they point them out in the wooded landscape, and are eager to point out the features of their own home. The Steiner Homes build followed a design with lots of angles and curves and Dan, who owns Fairway

Laser Systems in Valparaiso, physically built his own extra design inspirations. “I didn’t want to build a house; I wanted to build the house,” he says. Dan used one of his own lasers to create the oak leaf design on the shutters outside. Inside, 7,000 square feet include a spacious foyer with a large arched window over the door. The chandelier here is larger than planned, but Kelly agrees it’s needed for the space with a 20-foot staircase ceiling. All the doors except for the front and back doors are 8 feet high. “We like to have a hand in the design,” says Dan in an understatement. He made the bead board base of the kitchen island and its top, finished with narrow cherry wood boards found in the barn. Kelly loves its deep, copper farmhouse sink that’s acquiring a pleasing patina. Over the stove and refrigerator are matching brick archways that echo

the exterior rooflines. Dan did the painstaking work of installing the patterned travertine tiles over the stove. A favorite space is the “keeping room,” their term for the family room, where the open concept allows family interaction from there to the kitchen and informal dining room. The ceilings throughout the home are different heights; the ceiling over the dining room is bowlshaped. The couple plans to change its pale yellow paint, perhaps blue with clouds. Dan painted the family room ceiling in a honey-toned faux finish to match the drawers of the cabinetry there. The tray ceiling’s dark beams, though at an angle with the room, align with the other rooms of the house. In the living room Dan had the builder create a contemporary, narrow, rectangular fireplace space and Dan installed a full-wall surround in a warm-toned wood. There are three bedrooms, one converted to an office upstairs.

Downstairs, the formal dining room serves as a den, a more practical use, the couple agrees. Another practical plus: A dumb waiter just off the kitchen goes to the wine cellar. Kelly loves to garden, so Dan created an airy, sun-filled potting room, with colorful rubber and ceramic geckos dotting the walls and countertop. The master bedroom’s ceiling is double-tray with crown molding. A cabinet holds delicate glass animals, including a small monkey Dan bought for Kelly on a date; the gift has become a fond theme popping up through the house. The bedroom has a view of the lake Dan’s grandfather put into the property. In the master bath, with an unusual barrel ceiling, a big, blue, quirky chest of drawers from Dust Furniture is handy for stashing things. The tub was replaced with a shower, and the extra space turned into a large walk-in closet. Downstairs, “We had wanted a log cabin at one time,” Dan says, so the walls in a cozy room are of rounded logs—bear rugs are on floor and bench—and he fashioned a rustic fireplace mantel from a large piece of wood on the property. The heated concrete floor is stained to look like ceramic tiles, one of the money-saving ideas the couple had. Dan painted the home theater and Kelly’s father built the risers for the theater seating and installed the screen. A large bar area with space for buffet-style entertaining features a long, curved Chicago bar rail Dan made, with the traditional indentation for arms to rest upon. The theme is fun, with Rolling Rock beer references, including a small Christmas tree of lighted green bottles, and the bar top is resin embedded with poker chips. Seven narrow windows over the bar’s sink look out over the lake and patio. A guest bedroom in a wild jungle theme has a Jack and Jill bath to

an office for Kelly, who works in human resources at Sullair in Michigan City, Ind. The bath’s double basin sinks and shelf are pale, mottled green onyx; an iron towel rack’s top is a happy monkey’s face. There’s an exercise room, a game room with pool table, and a high, 12-foot crawl ticker displaying current sports scores. Doors open onto a wraparound deck that Dan designed that includes hot tub, pool, and putting green. But the star of this carefully designed downstairs space is the wine cellar. It began, Kelly says, with one bottle of wine with a monkey on the label, bought on vacation. Now the label is represented in a commissioned painting on a wine cellar wall. “We’re not connoisseurs, not sommeliers, but we have individual racks for 600 bottles, and we love this room,” says Dan, who chose the barrel ceiling matching the master bath, another example of his having chosen coordinating features in the house that are anything but ordinary. He installed the ceramic tiles in this wine cellar, perfect for lingering with light fixtures giving a soft glow and a rustic, rectangular table for four. Upstairs on the second floor a full apartment over the garage is for guests, but is ready for either of the couple’s parents should they need future assistance. “Dan’s grandmothers both lived to their late 90s, as did mine,” Kelly says. “Longevity runs in the family.” It is an open, pleasant space, where Dan installed flooring and the kitchen’s deep blue countertops and white cabinets. With a cheery yellow bedroom and comfortable sitting room, it’s an unusually pleasing apartment. Like the rest of this home, it reflects its owners’ creative personalities.

Beautifully Repurposing the Unconventional “I’m not traditional,” says Betsy Glass, owner of Lakeside Design & Stage Services, located in Union Pier, Mich. “Most people would look at many of the items I use—everything from vintage grocery carts to lockers—and say, ‘You can’t get away with that.’” Glass’s innovative use of repurposed items shows that not only can she get away with it, but, if you’re one of her lucky clients, you’ll be glad that she did.
ENTRYWAY STORAGE There are spaces in a home that make interior design no picnic, but Glass gets around this by bringing the picnic home with this unique piece created for the entryway of Glass’s home.
Glass and her husband, Rich, wanted to make the most of the long wall in the entry way of their home, but using a typical furniture item such as a couch wasn’t practical for the space. So they took a seven-foot, accordion-like, 1920s picnic table stand purchased from an antique store, clamped a recycled barn wood top to the stand, and built-in drawers which they already had in their possession. The resulting creation is a beautiful piece that serves both as art and as a brilliant storage solution.

When a wedding’s color scheme is inspired by orange sherbet, how could it not be sweet? We packed up Valpo Velvet’s vintage ice cream delivery truck and parked it at the breathtaking Taltree Arboretum & Gardens located in Valparaiso. The restored prairies and woodlands were the perfect setting for our romantic ice cream social. We were inspired by the subtle orange color of sherbet, which we paired with lavender hues and greenery.

SWEET TREATS
Valpo Velvet is a popular local ice cream company that has been in business for more than 68 years. We featured the timeless quality of their ice cream and added a dash of romance. Who wouldn’t want to enjoy an old-fashioned float or scoop of sherbet at their wedding? You could hear an audible gasp when people saw the orange sherbet perfectly placed on top of a ribbon and bow garnished cone. It was almost too sweet to handle. Why not add a pink diamond wedding band as the cherry on top? As for the cake, we carried on our subtle lavender and peach tones with a simple ombre buttercream frosting. The mini hand pies were shaped like hearts and had a pineapple filling.
