LIVING VOLUME 1 // ISSUE 1

PUBLISHER

Christopher T. White GENERAL MANAGER AND VICE PRESIDENT, SALES AND MARKETING

Deb Anselm

LETTER ords cannot express how grateful I am to be writing my very first letter for the very first issue of Inspired Living magazine. After months of researching, dreaming, planning and executing, the day has finally come when we can introduce Inspired Living to the Northwest Indiana/Southwest Michigan communities. I have never been more proud of a project than I am of this one. To be a part of a publication that celebrates beauty, creativity, local business, and women who strive to make our community better, has brought a smile to my face and pride in my chest every day. Of course, I am not a one-woman ship. Without the help of publication director Lisa Tavoletti and designer April Burford, plus many writers, photographers, photo stylists (many of whom are women themselves and are supporting their families through their creative efforts) and several additional helping hands, this issue and the ones that follow could never get off the ground. It was thrilling to put together our team, and with each project we discovered an increasingly united vision for this publication. Our desire is that this will not simply be a magazine with pretty pictures and tips and tricks, but that it will instill what our title claims: inspired living. We want to inspire you to try new ideas, make beautiful things you can be proud of, support a locally owned boutique or restaurant, and give of your time and resources to an organization or individual in need. Create. Enjoy. Give. This is what Inspired Living magazine is all about. Thanks for checking us out.

T

hree years ago, when Carey KeenanRowell’s son was ill and medical expenses were piling up, she did what any mother would do: thought of ways she could bring in extra income to support her son and get him healthy. Then made it happen. Thus was born the Hunt & Gather Market, the now quarterly spectacle at the Lake County Fairgrounds where local artisans sell vintage and handmade goods to a crowd hungry for things they’ll never find at a big box store. “I felt we needed an outlet locally for all of the talented curators and artists here in Northwest Indiana to show and sell their goods,” Carey says. “We have an overwhelming amount of local talent!” Carey continues to be the brain, heart and soul behind the increasingly popular June 26-27 market, the profits of Lake County which have helped her Fairgrounds son “tremendously.” “He’s Features a full bar, doing very well today,” she gourmet food, live says. In addition to her utter determination and business prowess, Carey is known for her unique sense of style. During the colder months, she’ll often be seen in her signature cropped faux fur jacket. “I’d describe my style as edgy,” she says. “I like to mix styles together. I love bold statement pieces and really unique accessories.” Free People is her brand of choice, which she finds at Ivy Boutique in Valparaiso. She also shops at Mink and WoodenJacket Design, both in Crown Point. When it comes to fashion, “my only strategy is to always wear what I love. And always wear awesome shoes!”

The Skinny on

I

SALADS

f you’re looking for a quick, refreshing meal combining flavorful ingredients, a salad is often the best bet. “Salads are perceived as healthy,” says Ryan Thornburg, chef at Bistro on the Boulevard at the Boulevard Inn in St. Joseph, Michigan. Thornburg is also the owner of Thornburg & Company, a business offering preserves and other products. The chef says he features various salads on the menu regularly at the Bistro. He says specialty greens are among popular ingredients to utilize when composing a salad. Experimenting with vinaigrettes and lighter dressings is also big with chefs and home cooks. “We do very well with arugula and kale,” he says, adding kale has found favor with health-conscious and adventurous diners not only at the Bistro but in the consumer marketplace. “People are interested in the health benefits of different greens,” he says. The chef adds the use of eclectic small vegetables, grains and nuts are also trendy now when creating salads. Although not every diner who chooses a salad falls into the vegetarian or vegan category, Thornburg says salads are a good way of offering a meal with a meatless focus to carnivores and still have them enjoy the heartiness of the dish depending on what’s combined in the salad. On Thornburg’s menu, salads are changed seasonally. Among featured salads are a kale blend; a simple side salad with mixed greens; Grilled Salmon Salad and others. The chef says he’s noticed many diners like to order salad as an entree for lunch. “A salad is not too heavy,” he says. “And people don’t want to get too full. A salad makes you feel better.” Try the following recipe for Kale Salad from Ryan Thornburg.

Kale Salad

2 cups coarsely chopped kale 2 tablespoons sundried tomatoes, julienned 2 tablespoons Parmigiano Reggiano, grated 1 tablespoon roasted sunflower seeds 1 4-ounce salmon fillet 2 tablespoons lemon vinaigrette

Turn on grill to medium high. Lightly oil salmon fillet and season with sea salt and fresh ground pepper. Grill for 3-4 minutes until nice crust is achieved. Turn salmon over and cook for another 2-3 minutes or until medium. Wash kale thoroughly to remove any dirt. Dry well in a salad spinner or between towels and coarsely chop. In a medium bowl, add remaining ingredients and mix well. Portion to a large bowl and top with salmon.

CHEF RYAN THORNBURG Ryan Thornburg is the executive chef at Bistro on the Boulevard at the Boulevard Inn in St. Joseph, Michigan. Thornburg and his wife are also owners of Thornburg & Company, a business offering preserves and other products.

Lemon Vinaigrette 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon lemon juice, freshly squeezed 1 teaspoon wildflower honey Salt and pepper to taste

Whisk together ingredients until well incorporated. ■ ELOISE MARIE VALADEZ

Eating Alfresco Where to go for optimal outdoor dining Alfresco—taking place or located in the open. Like outdoor dining. And after another long Midwest winter, it’s something that’s underway again. Both are on a corner. Families once lived there. The outdoor dining is in what were real backyards. Karas says it offers beautiful alfresco dining areas. “Our outdoor dining is part of the neighborhood as well,” she says. “It’s got a little bit more charm than being right on a sidewalk somewhere.”

[Clockwise from left] All is light and airy in the great room, with whitewashed hickory beams accenting the cathedral ceiling. Filled with natural light, this New Buffalo lakefront home breathes vacation-like living

om and Linda Behringer knew what they wanted, and they were willing to wait for it… until serendipity completely changed their plans. They saw a lot perched atop a New Buffalo, Mich., dune with Lake Michigan’s edge frothing at the shore directly below. An upturn in the housing market combined with the 2011 discovery of their dream location meant, “Let’s do this!” By June 2014 construction on the new home was completed, though a few pleasing details are still in the works. For now, the 10,000-square-foot house with five bedrooms, four-and-a-half baths, and several rooms for entertainment and relaxation is close to perfect for the Behringers. With the vast lake and its changing moods a window’s glance away, “It feels like we’re on vacation when we’re here,” Linda says.

Natural light pours in through banks of windows on the main, second-level floor, with unobstructed views of lake and sky. The deck has tempered glass rather than railings to maintain the clear vista. The great room, dining area, and kitchen of the four-level home form a long, wide, open space, accentuated by the cathedral ceiling with flat center. Whitewashed hickory beams reference the lighter beach palette, as does the wide-plank, engineered white oak flooring. Two 6-foot-by-6-foot chandeliers custom-designed by Lovell & Whyte in Lakeside, Mich., are graceful despite their size, in thin, black wrought iron with slim electric candles. A fireplace with stone surround to the ceiling ensures coziness on a chilly Michigan evening. Between the great room and kitchen, a dining table seats sixteen when two leaves are added—a must, Linda says, for family and guests. Tom and Linda enjoy whipping up dishes together. The large, quartzite-topped island is inevitably a conversation area. Cabinetry

A bank of lakeside windows along the great room extends through the dining area, where leaves can extend the table to accommodate sixteen. [Clockwise from left] In the kitchen, cabinetry is painted in custom-mixed green-gray, a color Linda loves. The large island with sink makes prep work easier and fun, with room for guests to hang out and chat while Tom and Linda cook. Views of the outdoors are ever present above the farmhouse sink. and refrigerator front are green-gray, in paint custom-mixed by their architect, Jeff Goulette in Chicago, for his own home. A bay nook is great for a cup of coffee, but truly delightful relaxation is just beyond in the white, four-season porch, octagonal with slate flooring. A deck leads to the outdoor hot tub, and yes, it’s enjoyed in winter, including New Year’s weekend. The lawn is terraced to steps to the lake and a beach house, great for the family’s twentysomething “kids.” In the Behringers’ walk-out basement’s wine cellar, their personal touch: “Behr Cove” is etched on the door window. With kitchen and bar for snacking and chatting, the room is “a great place for games and hanging out.” Also handy-haves: egress to the hot tub, bath with steam shower, exercise room, bedroom, and huge storage area that, among other additions, will eventually have a dry sauna. Of the two main-floor master bedrooms, one has a gas fireplace

and long window seat; the beadboard there is repeated elsewhere in the house. A workday plus: Tom can move from bedroom to bath to dressing room, then exit without disturbing Linda, sometimes waking later than his early-morning start. The baths are coordinated by custom color- and tile-design, in differing gray-and-green patterns. The basketweave flooring complements the deft combination of upscale and casual. A later addition is the master bath skylight. “It’s a complicated house and roofline. Once the house was dry-walled, we found places to add more light,” says Linda, clearly pleased. On the third level, a long hallway opens to two short catwalks plus a window, each overlooking the great room. A window facing the front will soon be a stained-glass effect, with Linda’s collection of sea glass providing the colors. There are two steps up at each end of the hallway, one leading to a large, vaulted-ceiling area with two bedrooms separated by a pocket door. Beyond a bath, a spacious room with beds

ou know those wall hangings with the cute, witty, sometimes sentimental sayings that you’re seeing everywhere? We like to call it word art. It’s a hot trend, it inspires us, makes us laugh, reminds us of the “house rules” and fills up our empty wall space. In fact, word art easily replaces traditional art in many homes today. It’s affordable for every income and can even be a do-it-yourself project. Before you buy a piece of word art for every room, however, there are a few guidelines you should follow. We asked Kathleen Cusson, professional designer and co-owner of

oastal décor has really taken off in the past few years,” says Stephanie Grill, co-owner of HarborTown Interiors in St. Joseph, Michigan. “It historically was only for beach houses and old family cottages on a lake or river, but with the advancement of today’s fabrics, now it’s almost everywhere.” The fabrics Grill speaks of are “highperformance fabrics that look and feel like time-worn linen but are virtually carefree.” Such is the signature coastal style. usan Brychell was not motivated to join the beauty pageant circuit by a positive self-image. For years, she was extremely shy and not a likely candidate to compete in the spotlight. “When I was 3 years old, I was attacked by a pack of dogs,” the Hebron native says. “My forehead was torn apart.” The mauling made her self-conscious and shy. “I remember getting called on to read in class when I was young and thinking, ‘Oh no, oh no,’” she says. One of her mother’s friends saw an ad for the Miss Indiana Teen Pageant and suggested Brychell enter in an effort to overcome her shyness. She won and was hooked. She went on to win other pageants, including Grand Prix Queen at Purdue University and the Indiana Rose Queen Pageant. She decided to try for the Miss Indiana USA pageant in 1980. “They had a free trip to Seoul, Korea, and I wanted the opportunity to see more of the world,” she says. “I said to myself, ‘Okay, give me the bathing suit and the shoes.’” She won that pageant, too. “I know pageants get a bad rap sometimes,” Brychell says. “It’s a great way to get scholarships, travel, and to meet people from all walks of life.” Brychell had no pageant coach and realized how valuable that could be. “After returning home, I decided to help the state winners after me by telling them inside scoop that you could only know by going through the process.” “I like to help girls who don’t have a lot of experience,” Brychell says. “I work first on a positive self-image and then go into the basics of stage makeup, dress, interview strategies, learning a killer walk and how to maintain eye contact with the judges. All of these things make a big difference in interview scores and in your life.” One of the things Brychell quickly learned on the pageant circuit was not to compare herself to other contestants. It became a good lesson for life and in helping others compete. “The biggest defeat you can hand yourself—in your job, and in life in general—is to not believe in yourself,” she says. “My main goal was not to win a pageant, since there are so many variables, but to compete in a way I could be proud of.” In 1990, the Miss Universe Pageant Organization asked her to be the state director for Indiana. The job required her to prepare the young women who won the Miss Indiana Teen USA and Miss Indiana USA pageants for the nationally televised Miss Teen USA and Miss USA pageants run by Donald Trump. “It was one of the biggest challenges of my whole life,” she says. “I found myself having to rent out entire hotels, fly judges in from around the country, take out ads, write all of my own copy, hire entertainment, have stages built, plan meals.” Brychell enlisted friends and family to help and gave each one an area to manage during pageant weekend. “I’m a huge multitasker,” she says. To make sure things ran efficiently she put herself in the contestants’ shoes. “I start from the beginning.

Okay, I’m a contestant, what do I need to do? Write that down. When I walk into the hotel, where do I need to go?” The lessons learned in her seven years directing state pageants led her to become an event planner in Valparaiso, where she lives with her husband Richard and children Taylor and Brandon. She is on the board of directors for Valparaiso Events and the Kiwanis Foundation Board, and is the president elect of the Valparaiso Noon Kiwanis Club. She helps plan the Valparaiso YMCA fashion show, the Valparaiso Mayor’s Ball and multiple other charitable events. “I think we have a unique and a very generous community,” she says. “People have a sincere desire to make our community a better place to live and raise our children.” She prefers to plan events with small groups. “If too many people are involved, if it’s too loose, and there are too many ideas, meetings and discussions, you can sort of spin your wheels,” she says. “I’d rather have fewer meetings, email, and just get to work and get things done.” Budgets do not need to be big, either. Brychell organizes the commencement

reception for Purdue University North Central. “Last year, the theme was PNC Rocks, so we spray painted rocks gold and wrote ‘Purdue Rocks’ on them in black and those were our centerpieces,” she says. “People took them home as garden decorations.” The event was related to the job she has held and loved for the last decade. Brychell works at PNC as co-director of community relations, sharing the job with Leslie Plesac of Valparaiso. “It was a really innovative thing for Purdue to do,” she says, referring to the job sharing. “Leslie had been in the professional baseball world and I’d been in the pageant world. We’ve never competed against each other because we’ve been there, done that.” The greatest lesson she learned from her mother—who passed away recently—is to simply be your true self. “When I won the Miss Indiana Pageant I remember my mom saying, ‘If you change, I’m going to kill you,’” she laughs. “It sounds awful, but I knew what she meant. I would not be who I am today if my mom or teacher didn’t say, ‘You’re so shy, let’s get you in this pageant.’” “Every little piece of advice is a piece of my puzzle.”

Give sophisticated flair to your childhood favorites with this popsicle/prosecco treat. “Take gummy bears or Froot Loops and freeze with water or juice," says Ashley Carson of LaPorte, an event planner and stylist for these photos. Once frozen, place them in a glass of champagne for a fun and flavorful combo.

BRIGHT BLOOMS

For flower arrangements, The Flower Cart owner and head designer Steve Brickner advises, “Starting with the colors of your table linens, choose flowers that will not only coordinate, but will also help to add some flair for a fun gathering.”

MIX AND MATCH Ashley’s number one partyplanning tip, after deciding on a theme, is to search your house for any “props” or supplies that may work with the theme. All of the vintage glassware and place settings here come from Ashley’s own collection. “Don’t be afraid to mix and match; occasionally I will use plates from three different sets, just for fun,” she says. TIP: If you don’t have quite the right glassware, visit the dollar store, which usually has a variety of options for just a small portion of your budget.

June 2015 |

63

PAPER TRAIL

“One thing that is a ‘must have’ for me at parties is fun stationery,” says Ashley, who designed all of the stationery for this brunch. “A little tent place card and menu on a place setting goes a long way. I also like to match with fun little food and drink labels. It’s the littlest details that make the biggest impact and help pull your theme together.”

DIY DETAILS

To keep your party low-budget but still elegant, consider making your own elements wherever possible. “When it came to the tablecloth and napkins for our brunch, I knew exactly what I wanted,” Ashley says, “and it was either spend a fortune and possibly compromise what I wanted, or go get the exact fabric I wanted, hem the edges and $18 later we have a perfect tablecloth and fun napkins.”

64

| June 2015

SWEET TOOTH

Don’t limit the theme to the dining table; carry it over to other locations such as a dessert cart. Here, scrumptious pastries and handmade cookies that look like popsicles make a sensory statement, highlighted with pretty accents of flowers, candles, and practical elements like straws and napkins.

blue From the bleached blue sky to the royal blue water to the dark indigo abyss, blue is heavenly any way you wear it. LORRI ZIMMER of Valparaiso reports on this season’s azure trends. Photography by Penny Frazier

A

fter another long, cold winter, we find ourselves imagining the feeling of sand in our toes and warmth on our face. It’s no wonder that blue is one of the colors we are most excited about wearing this summer. Many designers looked to the water and sky for inspiration this season and translated these themes onto the runway with varying hues of blues and flowy fabrics. The Pantone Color Institute states a variety of blues are on trend because the color makes people happy. Among the most popular blues are navy and royal. The regal royal can uplift and rule any look to its highest majesty. While the crispness of navy demands dominance and power, it brings the depth of the night into the day. Contrasting the passion of the “sensual” theme is a palette of serene blues and pastels. Clear open skies and calm seas signify freshness and the simplicity of nature. And as it should be, all things indigo return to the spotlight. The dresses here, all infused with this multifaceted hue, bring new meaning to the phrase “feeling blue.”

Tennis Talk Jennifer Pete of Valparaiso shares her love of tennis and what she recommends for those looking to take up the sport.

June 2015 |

B

efore Mary Ewing Outerbridge discovered the sport in Bermuda in the early 1870s and brought the game back to her friends in New York, tennis was a man’s game—played by kings in castles and courtyards. In 1884 women players joined their male counterparts at Wimbledon. Today many would argue women tennis players are more popular and have had a greater impact on the game than men. Just look at Serena and Venus Williams. More women have taken up the sport including Jennifer Pete, racquet sports director at the Courts of NWI in Valparaiso. Pete began playing at least once a week in the early part of 2014 and now she plays twice a week, sometimes more. Pete shares her advice for beginning tennis players. Why do you love tennis? I enjoy tennis because it is an individual sport, where I am solely responsible on how my game is being played. I love the challenge! I am new to the game so I still have much to learn but I am having so much fun along the way. Tennis is a mental game where it is imperative to keep your emotions in check. You cannot let the past point played—good or bad—keep you from focusing on the current ball in play. It’s important to always stay in the now. It’s also a great workout for the whole body.

What other advice do you have for newbies? I have watched many professional tennis matches on television and believe it has improved my game. When watching a match you will find yourself studying their form and then trying to duplicate it on the court. This has helped me tremendously with my serve. I would keep a mental picture of the motions and then practice it over and over. Surprisingly, it works. Lastly, it’s all about having fun so just go out and play. The more time you spend on the court, the more your game will improve. ■ ROB EARNSHAW

If someone were to start playing tennis from scratch, what tips and advice would you give them? First, purchase a tennis racquet you feel comfortable with and a few cans of tennis balls and just start hitting. Practice swinging the racquet and just get familiar with the motion of making contact with the ball. Next, consider taking a beginner’s group lesson, where you will meet other players who are also new to the game. You may also want to take a private tennis lesson and receive personal instruction on the game. Then practice hitting with the ball machine. This is great practice for all levels of play. You can adjust the direction, speed, height and feed rate of the ball.

or months you’ve been longing to step outside, take in the sunshine, and feel the warmth on your skin. Now that balmier weather is here, this longing finally can become reality. As we all know, however, too much time in the sun can do more harm than good. The negative effects are aplenty: sunburn, sun spots, aging, and of course skin cancer. Fret not, however. There are ways to protect your skin from the sun’s damaging rays. Melanie Hilliard, esthetician at 7e Fit Spa in Highland, offers the following tips that bear repeating every year: ■ Most importantly, wear sunscreen, with an SPF of at least 30. Nearly all of the Image Skincare products at 7e Fit Spa contain SPF. ■ Wear a hat to block the sun if outside for a long period of time. Many hats now have SPF in them! ■ Keep the skin hydrated by drinking a lot of water and using a moisturizer. ■ Cleanse your face morning and night to remove dirt and makeup and exfoliate regularly to prevent clogged pores.

No balance equals stress, and stress definitely has its impact on your body! With everything my family has gone through [losing parents and having a sick spouse], I know firsthand that balance and family and friends are everything that will keep you feeling healthy and beautiful.
