Art Bryant ‘66, was honored for his 45 years of service as the Chapter President.
Sit right back
And you’ll hear the tale
A tale of an alumni trip
That started from St Clair Shores
Aboard Droogleever’s renovated ship. OK, OK. Maybe Gilligan’s Island isn’t the way we should tell our tale, but if ever a gathering of USNA alumni deserved a theme song, this was the meeting.
After the pause we all endured for the pandemic, 18 alumni and guests gathered aboard Mike Droogleever’s Pride of NautiBuoy for some well-behaved fun. Besides celebrating our ability to again gather and swap seastories, our group recognized Art Bryant ‘66 and his remarkable 45-year service to Southeastern Michigan’s Naval Academy Alumni. He has held our group together, ensured meetings were scheduled, and welcomed both USNA’s returning and new Michiganders to the area. As all of us who serve in any capacity know, this role can be tiring and thankless. You’d never know this, though, from the warmth and generosity Art brought to his leadership. Art, thank you!
Our group hunkered down for the trip across St. Clair Lake to begin our cruise along the Detroit River. Just as we cracked our beers and began regaling one another with new home office configurations, blue lights flashed in the distance. The Pride of NautiBuoy and its passengers, it seems, were no match for the US Coast Guard. The Guardsmen deftly maneuvered their craft alongside and boarded Pride of NautiBuoy to conduct their Five Star Google Rated Safety Inspection.
Following the disembarkation of our new favorite Coasties, we took in the sight of Detroit’s revived Riverwalk and GM’s RenCen. As if on cue, a firefighting ship began training and gave our passengers another remarkable view and selfie backdrop. We tried to convince Art that new president Joe Zane had put together the evening’s entertainment, but he wasn’t biting even if he was as impressed as we were with the night’s events.
Our ride back to St. Clair Shores was complete with a small craft advisory, drinks spilling on bulkheads, and storm clouds on the horizon. Mike D and his XO, Alana, kept us all safe and comfortable even on the rough return. We appreciate your hospitality!
Joe welcomes all local alumni to become part of our alumni association and encourages others to host social events. Want to lunch together at a favorite restaurant? Have access to a beach? Suspect you have a talent for planning an Army-Navy viewing that is fresh and exciting? He and the rest of the alum here in SE Michigan would love for you to host our next gathering.
As for me? I wondered aloud how we could make these alumni chapter updates more engaging. Not every meeting is going to have boardings, water displays, or 45-year service celebrations that merit exciting updates. Passengers suggested serial stories and cliff hangers to bring readers to this section of Shipmate. I’m all for that, but I suspect something more tangible will entice readers from other states to come to our Michigan chapter’s column: candy. If you’re from outside of Michigan and you’ve made it this far, be the first to drop me a line at LMERB99@gmail.com and I’ll send you a bag of MichiGummies. They’re a sweet treat from my adopted state and travel far better than cheese curds from my home state. This also stands as a challenge to other alumni groups: how will you get us reading your column? Until next time, Beat Army!

The first Leadership Meeting of the Southern Nevada Chapter of the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association was held at newly appointed Chapter President, Cor Karaffa ‘77’s house. The new officers discussed the administrative matters related to the turnover of leadership and using it as an opportunity to reinvigorate interest in the Chapter with local alumni. Chapter members can expect near term planning of events around the NavyAir Force and Army-Navy Football games, as well as smaller, more informal events announced by leadership via the Chapter’s Facebook page. The Chapter will be pursuing reorganization as a charitable organization to facilitate operations and fiscal support of local midshipmen, alumni and their families. The Chapter is coordinating with the national Alumni Association to establish an updated web presence and until such time, the Facebook page will remain the primary way leadership will communicate with the Chapter. We look forward to a great 2021 and beyond!

The New Mexico Chapter was saddened to be informed of the death of Ole Leigh Olsen ‘64 CEC, CAPT, USN Ret. on 8 July at his home in Placitas. His wife Phyllis is arranging for him to be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. Ole and Phyllis were active members of the Chapter for many years. His booming laugh and strong personality will be sorely missed.
Our Chapter’s Blue and Gold Coordinator David Swingle ‘76 reports a last-minute addition to our State’s representation in the Class of 2025. “Good news from New Mexico as another student was appointed to the Naval Academy. David Graves ‘25 of Las Cruces

reported to Induction Day on 30 June to begin his Plebe Summer. David had graduated from Las Cruces High School in 2020 then went on to Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts for a year. He is a wrestler and is hoping to be selected for the varsity team, once settled in. With David’s addition, New Mexico has a total of seven students (5 appointees and 2 NAPSters) at USNA this year.”
NM Chapter Officers (L-R) Fladager, Kraus, McGuire and Meints at Isotopes Park.

The company from which our NM Chapter President Scott Kraus ‘73 retired allows him periodic use of their luxury suite at the Albuquerque Isotopes Baseball Park. On 18 July, Scott arranged a “team-building” night for the Chapter Board members and their families. The game was between the Isotopes (affiliated with the Colorado Rockies) and the Sugar Land Skeeters (affiliated with the Houston Astros). The evening was enjoyed by all board members who could attend with families and friends. Present were Scott’s guest Brooke Pearson, Treasurer Ken Fladager ‘78, Vice President Doug Meints ‘77 with guest Shannon Hicks, and Mary Lynn and Joe McGuire ‘68 with their family. Tied at 7 after regulation play, the Isotopes fortunes sank, and they went down in defeat 7-9 in extra innings. For many of Scott’s guests, it was their first lux suite experience, and it made for memorable impressions during a most entertaining evening.
Assuming there will be no further state-wide pandemic lockdowns, plans are being made for a Chapter meetup at the Craft Republic sports bar on 11 September for Navy vs. USAFA football. Please see the Chapter bulletin board online at http:// newmexico.usnachapters.com for up-to-date details posted by our webmaster Mike Blackledge ‘63.

With most of the summer gone, the Cape Fear Chapter is gearing up for a busy autumn with several fun events. This optimistically assumes we get ahead of the pandemic with more vaccinations and fewer infections.
An important Chapter milestone was our first in-person gathering since March 2020. On 16 June, we hosted “Summer Cruise ‘21” at the Cape Fear Country Club. With a nautical theme, attendees were strongly encouraged to wear “cruise attire” and be ready to share sea stories from their summers away from Mother B. Members, spouses, and guests enjoyed freshly made Asian egg rolls, Pork BBQ sliders, Old Bay chicken tenders, and Tomato Mozzarella Bruschetta accompanied by libations from the cash bar. Alan Smith ’64 loaned us a set of his plebe year white works –hand-stenciled with his name and laundry number - which adorned a mannequin provided by Debbie Scheu, wife of Dave Scheu ’67. This salty figure complete with Dixie cup and vintage sea bag greeted Chapter mates entering the Ballroom.
Just under 40 members, spouses, and guests attended this fun filled event which included a drawing for several bottles of international wine, USNA stationery, and two gift certificates provided by Ken Wheeler ’62, owner of ClassCrestCollection.com which specializes in USNA class gifts. Patricia and Ken Wheeler ’62 traveled from Winter Park, Florida, just to attend this event. Thank you, shipmates! Also in attendance: Lynn and Gary Beaver ’77, Deborah Anne and Martin Brittingham ’76, Russ Brune ’92, Cecelia and Jack Dambaugh ’64, Muffy Boylan and Ray Decker ’72, Jane and Walt Flippin ’75, Dee and Dave Gould ’64, Sharon and Gregg Hamelin ’72, Barbara and Mark Hubbard ’76, Victoria and

Since July was a BYE so members could whack the small, white dimpled ball or chase a wave at the beach, the Chapter met on 4 August for its traditional lunch meeting. Dave Miller ’70, a retired Captain with a distinguished career in the “Silent Service” provided a thought-provoking perspective about the Navy back during his cruising days. Additionally, Dave is a published author and his book “No Peace in Our Time” is available through Amazon. Besides a good turnout of members, Griffith Waren ’24 and his dad, Hughes, attended this meeting before he had to report back to the Yard. Welcome Griffith!
Our quarterly Bring Your Company Mug (BYCM) social was held on 15 Sept at the Flying Machine Brewing Company in Wilmington. This favorite watering hole offers a range of craft beers and ensured the Chrome Gnome food truck was present. Paul Normand ’74 led this merry party while Ray Decker ’72 was away chasing lobstahs in Maine. Photo and attendee list in next Shipmate.
FUTURE CHAPTER ACTIVITIES:
11 October: The 1st Annual Army-Navy Golf “Tea Fight” is being coordinated by Gregg Hamelin ’72 and Hugh McWilliams ’72 with their Dark Knight counterparts. The battlefield will be the beautiful course at Magnolia Greens in Leland, NC. A small USAF Academy team will join the fray. Well done Hugh and Gregg! Mark your calendars, shipmates! 19 October: Lunch meeting at the Cape Fear Country Club. Election of Officers and prep for Army-Navy Game Party. 16 November: Lunch meeting at Cape Fear Country Club. Potential speaker RAdm. Ron Henderson, USN (ret) who will provide his Battle of Iwo Jima presentation. 11 December: Army – Navy Game Party. We hope to rally again with the local West Point Society in Wilmington. Location TBD.
March 2022: The 3rd Annual Dark Ages Dinner will be held at the Cape Fear Country Club to celebrate our common experience just after the Christmas holidays. Another memorable evening of fine dining, good libations, and fun activities is planned to shake the wintry mood.
The Chapter’s 2021 Calendar of Events is posted on our website: capefearnc.usnachapters.net.
COVID RESTRICTIONS PERMITTING:
All local graduates, Blue & Gold Officers, and parents of midshipmen or graduates are invited to join the Chapter and participate in our activities. Most lunch meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month except when a quarterly BYCM (Bring Your Company Mug) social or other special event like our Army-Navy Game Party occurs.
Chapter lunch meetings begin at 1145 and are held at the Cape Fear Country Club. All members planning to attend should contact Steve Yandle ’75 (sryusna75@ gmail.com) at least 2 days before the meeting so we can coordinate meal count and service support with the Club staff. Cost is $20 cash at lunch. Go Navy!

Thirteen members and spouses met for lunch on 29 July at the Pub and Patio in New Bern. All were happy to be out and the restaurant provided great service for us upstairs; it was too hot and humid to take advantage of the patio. Discussions went on around the table on a variety of subjects including reviews of several books with connections to the Naval Academy. Rick Kunkel ’67 discussed ‘A Quiet Cadence’ written by Mark Treanor ’68 and the origin of the author’s personal note to him. Rick also talked about a book titled ‘The Longest Beer Run’, the determined effort aboard a merchant ship to deliver beer to VietNam. Books by two local authors were also discussed. Nicholas Sparks, nationally recognized author, latest novel ‘The Return’ features a Naval Academy graduate and doctor in Afghanistan who is seriously wounded and disfigured, returns to New Bern for an unusual adventure. The other book by Eddie Ellis ‘Whispers of the Long Departed’ is about the area where MCAS Cherry Point is now and the local history of the area long before and after the air station was established.
We briefly talked about a proposed bill in the Senate that would provide for maternity leave at the service academies.
The lunch was concluded with review of future chapter meetings.
Eight members of the chapter met at the club on board MCB Camp Lejeune on Wednesday the 25th at 1145. The program was a return visit with Hiram Bell, a local attorney who grew up on a farm in Jones County. He discussed the logistics and pragmatic issues of turning part of your farm into a ‘solar farm’. This was an interesting discussion of the interactions with solar companies, local power company, the site work, contractual requirements and a couple of curious side stories of nearby Marine Corps aviation. Thanks Rick Kunkel ’67 for organizing. The September meeting is the Founders Day luncheon at the New Bern Golf and Country Club. The guest and speaker is Mr. Mike Yaniero, Public Safety Director and Chief of Police for Jacksonville, NC, home of Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. Rob Skrotsky ‘67

Dave Campbell USN (Ret.) to discuss submarine service special operations and our 9th Annual Family Picnic at the Durham Bulls Ball Park.
Our chapter revitalized its Linked-In Group in order to accommodate the professional interconnection of the wide range of grads continuing to relocate to our Raleigh-Durham area. This L.I. Group is managed by Shawn McAndrew ’93 and Gray Tompson ’07. We look forward to working with the new and existing BGOs in recruiting the best candidates for USNA.
As you probably already know, we did not hold a Founders Day Dinner/Annual Meeting in September 2021. Because of the increase in the number of cases of COVID due to the Delta variant, it was decided this was the safest course of action. July saw our first luncheon since March 2000 on 11 July 2021, at the Old Spaghetti Warehouse in Portland. It was great to get together again. The program consisted of our socializing for the first time in a very long time. Additionally, we voted John Adams ’69 as chapter president and Mike Carmichael ’69 as vice president. Jill Richards ’94 was voted onto the council. Jill is also the Oregon BGO Area coordinator. Her joining the council ensures the continuing close relationship between the Alumni Association, BGO organization and Parent’s Club. Present at the luncheon were: Mike Carmichael ’69, John Adams ’69, Mark Cooskey ’72, Doug Ballard ’74, John Frerichs ’50, David Lutes ’63, Tex Harkins ’67, Herb Colomb ’67, Frank Swientek ’66, Butch Bewick ’62, Scott Fitzpatrick ’80, Tony Lash ’58 (VMI), Hod Wells ’59, Skip Story ’65, Michael Seiwald ’73, George Schultz ’72, Ron smith ’72, Tom Ryan ’82, Bruce Thompson ’73 and Pete Kurzenhauser ’79.

With Covid restrictions easing several informal groups are starting/ restarting. A group organized by the Class of 67 alumni have begun meeting monthly at a local Chinese Buffett. Attending include Tex Harkins ’67, Ed Hepp ’67, Cal Meek ’67, Frank Swientek ’66, Ike Eisenbach ’67, Jack Kohl ’65, Skip Storey ’65, George Schultz ’72, Glen Weeks ’65, Rusty Baumberger ’67 and Mike Carmichael ’69. The Alumni living in Lake Oswego will have their first monthly in person happy hour in early August.
Our annual picnic at Parker’s Landing Camas/Washougal Washington will be held on 21 August 2021. We are planning a potluck. We have invited the local USMA, USAFA, USMMA and USCGA Alumni and family as well as parents, midshipmen and cadets home on leave. The words to the first verse of “Navy Blue & Gold” are heard frequently, but it’s that second verse the RV Alumni Chapter is living. In case a reminder is needed, that second verse goes like this….
“Four years together by the Bay, Where Severn joins the tide, Then by the Service called away, we scattered far and wide; But still when two or three shall meet, And old tales be retold, From low to highest in the Fleet, We’ll pledge the Blue and Gold”. BEAT ARMY!
COVID created huge growth in the RV industry which spilled over to the RV Chapter. As of the end of July 2021, chapter membership now numbers 140 from 28 states for a growth factor of 20%. In other words, members are scattered “far and wide” coast-to-coast. Thus we the Parry’s -spent our Summer ‘21 on an RVing cross-country adventure visiting friends, classmates & Chapter members while touring our own country.
First, the Nixon Presidential Museum was enjoyed with a couple of the very earliest members of this chapter which has now existed for 21-years: Glenn Shindler ‘64 who was chapter treasurer for years; and Nina & Peter Dabbieri ‘67 who remain chapter members in spite of not currently owning an RV. Museum exhibits were a trip down memory lane as we all lived through those years and were impacted by the happenings both inside the Pentagon and around the world.

‘Nita & Jack Parry ‘67 and Juliette and Jun Osalbo ‘81
Secondly, two of the very newest members, Juliette and Jun Osalbo ’81 were personally welcomed at lunch in Manteca CA. Lots of chapter questions answered! And yet another big welcome to our newest chapter members: Beth and Paul Gregory ‘75 from Waynesboro PA

Alamo Chapter held its first in-person meeting in several months 26 June at Flying Saucer. It was a purely social affair with the chapter providing some drink tickets and snacks. We had an excellent turn out including VADM Farrell’s widow Melinda. As is commonplace with these affairs, lots of stories, exaggerations about plebe year and backslapping old friends and classmates. We even picked up a BGO applicant (Chris Claiborne ’94) who is returning to the fold after several years hiatus. President Ron Sandoval ’81 brought our award as a Distinguished Chapter for all to see. A picture is attached and I apologize for the lack of emphasis (if you will). The medallion is set in clear acrylic so it was difficult to get it highlighted. We will display it appropriately at future gatherings. By the time you read this we will have had our viewing party for the AFA game slated for 11 September which I will report on in the next issue. We do plan to hold the Tri Service golf tournament on 23 Oct at Ft Sam Houston. As an aside, I am pleased to report that the golf trophy is on display in the men’s locker room at FT. Sam. As a final note, in the last report I noted my presentation to MID Noah Chavez (’25). MID Chavez’ real BGO was Roman Sanchez and Roman attended the presentation of the appointment by his congressman. It is only fair to give credit where it is due.

“NETWORK BREAKFAST AT THE ORIGINAL PANCAKE HOUSE, FORT UNION, UTAH” JUNE 3 AND JULY 1, 2021
All academies’ friends gathered for the ‘First Thursday’ breakfast. As the annual Parents Club Picnic Saturday, 3 June, BGOs were invited to bring new to be plebes from the Class of 2025 along with recent graduates and family, as available. A report of the picnic will be the topic of our next Shipmate article.

We were very happy to see Nyles Christensen’75 at breakfast. He informed us he wouldn’t be attending in the future, as he continues battling Parkinson’s. This is a sad progression as we are continually discovering new places and new things.
We were sad to see the Hesters ’69 move to greener pastures as they deepen into retirement and family. You are missed. By the way; neither of these points are obits. A final note from Ted Frederick; the Blue Plate Diner is history as its demolition is complete, including several city blocks surrounding it.

Although YP Summer Training Block 2 had to cancel its port visit to JEB Little Creek/Fort Story due to mechanical issues with the YPs, a second large group of Mids undergoing IW training through NAVIFOR gathered at Norfolk Waterside’s Blue Moon Taphouse on 28 July. Chapter Events Coordinator Al Ponessa ’68 orchestrated a very successful event attended by about 80 people that also included at least 20 alumni and several IW professionals. One of the latter was the Information Forces Commander, VADM Kelly Aeschbach, whose husband Rob Aeschbach ’90, is our Chapter Webmaster. Without question, we all came away duly impressed with the enthusiasm and desire to listen, ask questions, and learn displayed by these fine young men and women. And they taught us a few things too!

On 14 August the Chapter held its annual Triple-A Baseball Night at Harbor Park, at which the hometown Norfolk Tides (Baltimore Orioles) played the Memphis Redbirds (St. Louis Cardinals) who were making their first-ever appearance at Harbor Park. This year, we were proud and thrilled to include about 30 Mids from YP Summer Training Block 3 at an outing that coincided with Marine Corps Night at the ballpark and ended with fireworks after the game on the bank of the Elizabeth River behind the ballpark.
By the time this issue of Shipmate arrives in mailboxes, Navy football will have kicked off for what we hope will be a rebound season that results in more wins than losses; and of course includes two big victories over Air Force and Army! Once again, Shorebreak Pizza in Virginia Beach is the place to be in Hampton Roads to watch every Navy game!
The Business Development Group, guided by Rob Hanckel ’78, continued to conduct monthly meetings throughout the summer, and on 12 August the group also held a Happy Hour at the Big Wisky Porch adjacent to the Nauticus Museum and battleship
WISCONSIN.
We took a break from our Networking Breakfasts in July and August but picked them back up again on 22 September. Dick Enderly ’71 has assumed duties as the emcee for that event. The September speaker was scheduled to be Dave Duffie ’75 who discussed the great things being accomplished by the Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA). And speaking of the ASYMCA, Chapter Director of Golf (DOG) Bob Perry ’72, his ADOG Cal Lassetter ’73, and the former DOG Dan Lear ’68, along with Dave Duffie ’75 and Associate Chapter member Pete DeMane representing the ASYMCA, pooled their energy and resources to organize our Fall Golf event, the Be Somebody’s Hero Tournament, conducted on 16 September in partnership with the ASYMCA.
We are staying busy and plan to be even busier in the coming months! Please check our website, LinkedIn, and our Facebook page for information on future Chapter initiatives and events, as well as USNA news and updates.

Quantico Area Chapter (QAC) traditionally takes a break in July. The Chapter plans to resume its activities in August with the latest iteration of our Breakfast Speaker Series, featuring Mr. Martin Culbreath ’90, former Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Norfolk Field Office. Currently conducting this event over Zoom, we plan to resume in-person breakfasts in September at The Holiday Inn Express in Dumfries, VA. Our scheduled speaker in September, the U. S. Air Force’s birthday month, is Colonel Rob Shepherd, USAFR (Ret.), Class of ’87. This engagement will allow us to celebrate both the birth of the U.S. Air Force and our Air Force-commissioned alumni. The USN and USMC birthday
celebrations are on the schedule for October and November, respectively, in conjunction with that month’s breakfast speaker event. We plan to round out the year with a talk by Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-1), who will make his annual visit to the Chapter, many of whose members are the Congressman’s constituents. Congressman Wittman is also a member of the Naval Academy Board of Visitors and the Ranking Member of the Seapower & Projection Forces Subcommittee, sea services connections that will provide ample material for audience questions. Also in December we plan to host our 5th annual Army-Navy Watch Party for the Lieutenants at The Basic School in Quantico. Go Navy, Beat Army!

Bikers! We held a bike ride on 22 August. Several of you signed up for the “metric century,” which starts in Reston Town Center. The chapter is rallyed around the members in this event. Kate Murray ‘00 coordinated the effort to have USNA AA GWC bikers at the event. Thank to her and all of you who participated!
Navy Football. Our football watch parties will be held this Fall at Valor Brewpub, located across the street from Marine Corps Baracks 8th&I. Our area of operations extends well past DC, so we are looking for partner bars or restaurants in Virginia and Maryland. If you own or work at a place where we can host these events then reach out to us at contactus@usnagwc.org. We would love to support your business!
Let’s get a drink! One of our alumni is co-owner of a distillery in northeast DC. We are planning a social event at his distillery for this Fall. This event will mark the beginning of a concerted effort to support alumni businesses.
Finally, we are posting videos to the USNA GWC YouTube channel. Be sure to subscribe to the channel and participate.
Go Navy! Beat Army!
