The LA/OC USNA Alumni Chapter is doing well. Since our last submission, we have continued with our monthly Zoom Happy Hours and board meetings. With things opening up in So Cal, we hope to hold our first inperson Happy Hour and board meeting in August. We have also began to plan events for the latter half of 2021.

Potential Events for 2021: - Annual Summer Picnic by the Parents Club of Southern California - Battleship IOWA Labor Day Celebration - Tiki Boat Cruise Newport Harbor - Navy Football Watch Parties (Chair Force, Notre Dame, Army)

Our North LA group has got back to their tradition of holding a monthly luncheon at Mimi’s Cafe in San Gabriel Valley. They meet the 4th Thursday of every month. For more info contact: gshindler64@ earthlink.net.

If you are an alumni or know an alumni in the LA/OC area you should join our group. Let’s meet up, have a drink, and talk about the good ol’ days. Cheers!

San Diego is getting back to normal (slowly) and chapter activities are picking up. Here’s what has been going on:

Our first in person event was a happy hour (naturally) at the VFW with five decades of alumni represented from the class of ’60 to ’01.

San Diego Chapter: Alumni at the VFW. From left to right:

We are supporting the Midshipmen that are here for summer cruises by sponsoring a series of three picnics scheduled for 23 July, 6 August and 13 August. Unfortunately, the first picnic was cancelled by USNA and the Mids returned early to Mother B. We’re still on for the August picnics and hope to have more to say about them in the next issue.

July saw several alumni participating in a “Paint & Sip” event held at the Pinot Pallet in Liberty Station. The purpose was to have everyone paint something, in this case an anchor, while tasting wines. The picture above is proof that you can drink and paint at the same time and still get results. Everyone had a great time.

July also saw our first Alumni lunch in 15 months. To get things rolling we held our annual “sea story” event with six participants telling stories as only seafaring folks can. I highly recommend this to all chapters since it’s something we all have baked into our DNA from USNA. Stories have to be limited in time and generally R-rated but you really hear some good ones. Great time was had by all.

We have a new LinkedIN page for the Chapter at USNA Alumni Association San Diego Chapter. Check it out. Make contact.

Aloha Shipmates,

Good to observe that the pandemic is allowing many activities to return to the schedule, although it appears that normal is perhaps not a word I would use for the status quo. St. John’s dorms are not extensions of Bancroft Hall, and some things of the past that were once “traditions” are beginning to reoccur. Pleasing that sports activities are making a good comeback and competitiveness is more routine than distancing! Many of the Navy activities in Connecticut are returning, and the Sailing Squadron sailed! None-the-less, it is very sad that so many people became ill and some passed away (and still occurring at a much reduced rate) due to the contagion of COVID-19.

As some doors shut, others open. That provides a segue into an extension into the theme for last month’s column: The Chapel. That extension will be about a main feature of that structure (other than the Dome, of course): the massive Bronze Doors.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION:

From atop the granite steps that lead to the front doors of the Chapel, stretches an idyllic scene of oak and poplar trees, beds of tulips and azaleas, monuments and buildings, the ocean-bound Severn River, and overall a canopy of Maryland sky. The massive bronze doors, designed by 19-year-old Evelyn B. Longman, were donated in 1909 by Robert M. Thompson as a memorial to his Class of 1868. The overhead transom panel bears the motto, “Not for self but for country”. The left door, symbolizing Peace, shows and aged teacher, Science, instructing a kneeling midshipman who holds in his hands a creation of learning. On the right-hand door, symbolizing War, appears Patriotism, her fist clenched upon a cannon. The young man at her side, about to join the other marchers, represents the response of youth to Patriotism’s call. “For God and Country” appears

below. At the head of each door are inscribed the names of three naval heroes.

The above description, as well as the photo of the doors comes from the USNA Library Digital Collections.

But to add a bit to The Rest of the Story, there are these points: * The late great architect, Paul Philippe Cret, designer of the PanAmerican Union, Folger Shakespeare Library, and the Federal Reserve Building in Washington, D.C., also designed the Chapel’s extension, known as the “New Nave.” This affords a seating capacity of 2,500. The great bronze doors and every stone of the former entrance were retained and serve as the present entrance. This work was completed in 1940. Flanking the entrance to the New Nave are two immense anchors formerly used by the Navy’s first armored cruiser New York. * The first Chapel was dedicated in February 1854. This building was later destroyed by fire and none of its furnishings were saved.

The second Chapel was dedicated in May 1868 and torn down in 1904. One stained glass window, two altar chairs and the door key used during that period are to be found in the present edifice. * The designer of the doors was a 19-year-old girl, Evelyn Beatrice Longman, who won the contract in open competition conducted under the auspices of the National Sculpture Society in 1902. When Colonel Thompson learned that the youthful designer lacked the technical knowledge needed to prepare a working mold for the casting, he sent her abroad for a year of study. At the dedication in 1909, the members of the Class of 1868 were the first to pass through the doorway, and Miss Longman was present to enjoy her triumph. * From age 14 to 20, Evelyn Longman supported herself by day working for a wholesaler while studying at night at the Chicago Art Institute; she graduated with honors. From 1901, Longman worked in New York as assistant to the popular sculptor Daniel Chester French, who had sculpted the seated Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. Her first important piece was a male statue, Victory, shown in the Festival Hall at the St. Louis Exposition (1904), for which she was awarded a silver medal. She earned $20,000 for the Chapel doors. She died on Cape Cod in 1954. * The doors are 10 feet wide and 15.5 feet high. With the transom, the total height of the doorway is 22 feet.

So, the next time you pay homage to J.P Jones, remember to take a closer look at the Chapel doors, if they are closed.

The doors are at one end, but what about the pipe organ at the Other end of the chapel? Well time for a preliminary quiz:

The Chapel organ has a great abundance of features. These culminate in a total instrument of equivalent of how many pipes: a. 156 b. 1,568 c. 15,688 d. 156,888 e. None- a harmonic synthetescope emulates the sound of pipes

Answer in future edition. Until next issue, best wishes that you and those in your pod are safe and healthy.

Won’t be too much longer until we: Beat Army!

Jacksonville has been enjoying the sunny summer days including joining alumni from the University of Maryland at a Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp baseball game outing on 9 July as the Shrimp took on the Charlotte Knights. Also, Chapter President Scott Neidhold ’77 attended the Parent’s Club Recognition picnic for this year’s incoming plebes, providing a brief presentation on our chapter, answering questions about USNA life and how we can support our local midshipmen, and foster new relationships. Each year our local Chapter works with the Northeast Florida USNA Parents Club to welcome aboard local students who have been selected to attend the Naval Academy, NAPS, or Foundation Prep Schools. This year we welcomed 15 prospective members of the Class of 2025 and 2026 who began their Naval Academy experience. Steve Duba ’75 and Mark Tharp ’75 provided their perspective through the “Another Link in the Chain” program - cementing the bond between graduating classes 50 years apart. Attached is a picture of some of our local new Midshipmen as they prepare to head to join the class of 2025.

Local artist Kristin Cronic ‘11 has been selected to display her artwork at the Naval Academy Museum in Annapolis. Her exhibit depicts life that USNA and the exhibit will run through 2021/2022. More of her work and information on the exhibit can be found at www. easelonstribling.com/ami

In May, Enochia Anderson ‘94 was voted to the Nation Chapter Trustee position. We are looking forward to her three year tenure in the position. Many thanks to Caleb Cronic ’11 for his hard work in the position as our last Trustee.

As we move into fall, we hope to get back to our normal rhythm of events. Looking forward, we are tentatively planning several “watch parties” for football games as well as hoping to bring back the ArmyNavy viewing event at the Jacksonville Jaguars TIAA Bank Football Stadium for another year of Beating Army!

PRESIDENT’S COMMENTS:

Greetings from our sunny Southwest Florida chapter; The summer has been interesting to say the least with many of our members enjoying time with old friends and family back North. The COVID-19 pandemic has morphed to the Delta variant – more contagious (Florida seems to be particularly active) but Delta seems to be much less deadly; our Olympic team has been doing well and we hope to hold our national emblem high in their honor. As I write this, the focus is back to school, back to work and back to normal.

For your Chapter, it is back to work putting together our season package starting with September Navy-Air Force game watch parties. Soon to follow will be what we hope is a fun and exciting season kick-off opportunity to connect across the many USNA classes and occupations and interest groups in the SWF area. We are setting up a Happy Hour USNA mixer near down-town Naples to get the Navy spirit back into gear. Keep attentive to emails coming out to local USNA alumni, the BGO, and Parents Club members for details. Quickly thereafter will be the ARMYNAVY game day tailgate at Wyndemere Golf Club (those who attended in 2019 had high praise for the club’s hospitality and the fun time cheering on our team). Let’s double up the spirit this year (after being denied the opportunity last year) to gather and support our team! 2022 will start off with a January luncheon and (we hope) winning the tri-service academy golf tournament – Navy hosts this year at Imperial Golf Club – details on team roster and time and date will come out in November.

So, let’s pray that our SWF Chapter’s future is bright and open for business again. And remember, alumni, their spouses and guests, USNA parents and midshipmen visitors are always welcome to join us at any of our events.

Doug Backes’70 Go Navy, Beat Army!!

PS. Help Wanted!

CHAPTER UPCOMING EVENTS:

We have a lot of work to do to set up our schedule of luncheons/events for next season and establish some orderly change-out of our slate of officers. If you would like to serve as an officer or know of someone who may want to serve, or if you have a link to an interesting speaker, again please email me at herbiejohn383@ gmail.com. We will be doing our business by email, on the phone and on the web getting ready for 2021-2022 season.

We are planning a September 11th Navy-Air Force watching party at an area bar venue.

Stay safe & well till we meet again. Herb Andrews ‘68 Secretary

RECENT EVENTS:

The Tampa Chapter shifted colors from our normal monthly dinner join up and got underway for a picnic in July. Enjoying the sunshine of the Sports Coast, our chapter gathered for a fun filled family picnic.

Our crew for the picnic included chapter members and their family members. In attendance were Fr. Tim Corcoran ‘67, Val and Gary Polansky ‘69, Marcia and Mark Krivonak ’71, Ginger, Kate, and Chris Heath ‘72, Mike Stocks ‘72, Linda and Don Aiken ‘78, Pixie and Duane Lafont ‘78, Doreen and Kevin Sinnett ‘79, Daryl and Grant Thornton ‘79, Karen and Mark Arnold ‘80, Tammy and Stacy Turner ‘84, Carol, Ryan, and Paul Matthews ‘85, Steve Swift ’87, Paula and James Castano ’91, and Robert and Chelsea Buckholtz ’09.

Enjoying a summer day and great BBQ was not without its rocks and shoals. At the last minute, we had to change course away from a bayside park to avoid the red tide that swept Tampa Bay. Undeterred we found safe harbor at another park. But then an uninvited guest arrived bearing Army colors. Our valiant crew quickly resolved the issue by turning the tables on our uninvited guest with a game of “Pin the tail on the Mule.” After a day of fun in the sun, our chapter closed the day with our traditional singing of Navy Blue and Gold. “Beat Army!”

Tampa Chapter members and their families got underway for the family picnic in July.

Festivities at our family picnic included “Pin the tail on the Mule” resulting in another victory over Army.

Thanks to all that helped set up, especially the Heath’s and the Aiken’s and particularly Ginger Heath with the home baked cookies!

While you may have missed the chow call for the home baked cookies, you can catch up with the Tampa Chapter on our new LinkedIn Page. Join us at https://www.linkedin.com/ groups/3912975

Our chapter holds our regular monthly meetings at Tate’s Pizzeria on Westshore on the first Wednesday of each month at 1800. Look forward to seeing you there and your first drink is on us if you are a newbie!

Greetings all. Our South Bend/ Michiana Chapter finally had its’ first “in-person” meeting. A nice change from the last 15 months of Zoom meetings. Our chapter now meets at the new Bar Louie location across from the Heritage Square shopping center. The address is 7320 Aspect Dr., Granger. The monthly meeting time is still 12 noon, on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. I just learned from reading the June 2021 SHIPMATE (p.4), that the BAR Louie CEO has a USNA connection. The CEO is Tom Fricke, USNA Class of 1981 (2nd CO). Sounds like a great reason to have our monthly meetings at his place!

The big topic at this month’s meeting was the upcoming Navy/Notre Dame football game here in South Bend on Nov 6, 2021. Preliminary plans are underway for a tailgate party at nearby St. Mary ’s College Athletic Center. More information regarding times and tickets will be made available when the plans are finalized.

Some fotos from our recent in-person and zoom meetings. Attendees have included: John Ross ’94, Chris Haizlip ’72, Dale Szpisjak ’87, Deb Sloan & Galatic Overlord Pat Sloan ’75, John Strauss ’69, Paul Bradfield ’53, Jim Baker ’60, Dick Swanson ’72, Jason Torpy, Kirk Daniels ’75, & Ron Scudder ’73.
