Aloha Shipmates,

NOTE: The Connecticut Chapter website has been completely overhauled and relaunched at a new address: see above and note the .net at the end!

And 2021 is also a year of the Becalmed. Little activity to report herein in the form of current events. There were several Zoom meetings and presentations from USNA that were available, and we were represented in those. You will receive this in May, but when written we are in snow with chilling night temperatures in February. But we are prepared and experienced whereas the southland is just digging out from a very wild time of cold, snow, loss of power and little water except boiled snow. So we are sending our well-wishes to them.

Recently our Chapter Member Ken Laporta, an Overseer of the Old Ironside Museum invited folks to welcome exciting new museum acquisitions and go behind-thescenes in the collection storage vault and hear compelling stories about artifacts from the curators.

You probably have heard of the building of the new Alumni Association and Foundation Center being built near the baseball stadium. Briefings have recently (Feb.) been held concerning that from USNA. Regretfully the wonderful Ogle Hall across from St. John’s is up for sale for the asking price of $4 million. Worth every penny!

And here is the recurring section on those at USNA that we alumni remember best:

MEMORABLE MENTORS

This issue’s featured much-remembered personality from back in our days in The Yard, concerns Professor Angel Cabrillo-Vazquez.

He was a Spanish teacher and head of the Spanish section of the Language Dept. He is well remembered and revered by those that had the special opportunity to be in his class due to his unique teaching style, particularly if you were in his class for your last semester of Spanish. In that last class for most of us, he would sit and tell stories, or describe situations from his past, completely in Spanish. The dialog was amazingly interesting and everyone paid extremely close attention. It was presented just a little beyond our current level of expertise so that you learned a number of words by use in the story and his careful redundancy. Subjects were completely different and often included engineering disciplines, in which Cabrillo was well versed.

Prof. Cabrillo was born in Santander, Spain in 1898! and first came to America at the age of 20. Educated in Spain and this country he earned a Master’s Degree from Catholic Univ. and Doctorate from the Univ. of Madrid. He taught for a number of years at George Washington Univ. and at Catholic University of America. His studies centered on psychology and international affairs in addition to Hispanic literature and culture. He was an author of historical articles and literary studies and wrote Spanish textbooks, which were used at USNA and numerous colleges and universities.

Prof. Cabrillo joined the Naval Academy faculty in 1935. A gifted, colorful, and inspiring teacher, he won the respect, gratitude and friendship of a great many Midshipmen over the years- not only for his vivid presentations in the classroom, but also for his constant readiness to give time and thoughtful consideration to their individual problems, both academic and personal. His profound knowledge of all phases of the culture of Spain, his capacity for scholarship, and his extraordinary social adaptability made him a uniquely valuable member of the faculty. He spoke Spanish, French, Portuguese, English and some Mandarin Chinese!

He traveled back to Spain on sabbatical several times (unpaid), some on Midshipmen summer Cruise ships.

BUT! Unbeknownst to us, his services to his adopted country extended beyond the education of future officers. In 1954-56, at the request of the Navy Department, Professor Cabrillo served as Public Relations Director to prime contractors developing Spanish-American base facilities in Spain. Here is an excerpt from a letter he wrote back to the head of the Language Dept. during his time in Spain: M “In my 11 months here as Director of Public Relations, I have been able to solve any number of delicate situations which constantly crop up in this program in Spain. I suppose I should say I have been lucky in having been able to settle quite a few problems which, if you will forgive my bragging, nobody else would have been able to solve.

Franco has expressed his desire to meet me and I am going to be received by him in the near future.“

For his service in that capacity he was awarded the medal for the Cross of Naval Merit by Spain.

Some of his other interesting credentials and accomplishments: Official Interpreter, Pan American Conference of the Red Cross, Delegate to the Eighth American Scientific Conference- 1940, voted “member of Merit” by the Spanish Royal Yacht Club and private tutor in Spanish to many noted personages, among them Senator Millard Tydings of Maryland and Secretary of Commerce Henry Wallace.

He was specifically given a waiver to teach well beyond the

normal faculty retirement date due to his special prowess, and his need to continue earnings “due to prolonged illness of his wife, requiring costly treatment for which his retirement pay would have been inadequate.” He retired in January 1968 and remained in Annapolis.

Due to the great positive response, here is an additional photo of Heinz Lenz, discussed in the Jan-Feb edition of Shipmate

Shipmates, please think back to your time on the Severn and advise me of your best-remembered faculty member. I can be reached at the email listed for the Comms. Director above.

As we write this article (in late February) it is still uncertain to what degree we will be able to hold inperson events for the remainder of our 2020-2021 “high-season”. Florida is up to 6.8% on 2nd shots for COVID-19 as we speak, and we may be able to schedule an in-person event at Audubon Country Club (N. Naples) for April 2021.

If we can have an in-person event in April (we might even consider providing a “Spring Fling” luncheon event for our spouses for their incredible patience in dealing with us during this cooped-up COVID crisis), that would be our last event for “high-season”; and we’d be “closed for the summer” until our first luncheon in November 2021.

Our Board continues to meet via Zoom and we’ve gotten some very positive and upbeat ideas, and great feedback. We’d definitely like to see some of our younger local Southwest Florida alumni involved in our chapter especially our leadership positions and for them to bring in new and fresh ideas.

Our secretary Herb Andrews ’68 is our contact person for our off-season (he lives in Naples year-around); you can contact him at: herbiejohn383@gmail.com.

If you have any ideas for speakers or programs, interested in joining or taking on a leadership position, please contact our VP Hank White ’68 at: hfwhite@aol.com.

Next season we will try, COVID-19 willing, to restore our in-person focus as in years past: five luncheons, one Army-Navy tailgate, and the tri-service academies golf tournament. For speakers we are looking at Navy Athletics, Cyber Warfare, VA Benefits, Florida tax structure and benefits, U-boats off Florida in WWII, and perhaps a trip to one of our local SWF Military Museums.

Recent Events: Welcome to Tampa Bay, the home of great teams – The Rays, who represented the American League in the MLB World Series; The Lightning, winners of the NHL Stanley Cup; The Buccaneers, NFL Super Bowl Champions; and the U.S. Naval Academy Tampa Bay Alumni Chapter, a team that gathers monthly to keep the links in our USNA chain strong.

Our outdoor meeting had another strong muster in February. Our attendees included Dick Petrucci ’61, Miller Detrick ’63, Bill Graham ’72, Chris Heath ’72, Bill Squires ’75, Jane Lochner ’84, Brock Stolley ’84, Paul Matthews ’85, Tom Mercer ‘87, Steve Meyer ’87, Steve Swift ’87,

James Castano ’91, Leon Jablow ’91, Dan O’Shea ’91, Chris Thompson ’92, Chelsea Buckholtz ’09, Jonathan Sunderwirth ’10 and Brian Tsai ’16.

We bid farewell to Steve Meyer ’87 who is setting sail to Dallas, TX. We are certain that Steve will contribute as an active member of a new alumni chapter. Fair Winds and Following Seas!

We also hailed the arrival of Jonathan Sunderwirth ’10. Welcome Aboard!

Our chapter was honored to have Bill Squires ’75, Eastern Region Trustee, attend our chapter meeting. Bill shared updates and insights from USNA and the Alumni Association, including the progress of the fundraising and construction of the new Alumni Center. Bill was in town supporting the Super Bowl as a consultant, and he regaled the chapter members with the story of his journey from Naval Officer to the professional sports world including work with the New York Yankees and the National Football League. More poignant, however, and in keeping with the refrain from our alma mater “But still when two or three shall meet, and old tales be retold…” Bill had the opportunity to reconnect with Dick Petrucci ’61, his CO from VP-26, who he had not seen in 42 years!

“But still when two or three shall meet, and old tales be retold….”, VP-26 shipmates Dick Petrucci ’61 (right) and Bill Squires ’75 (center) reconnect at Tampa Bay Chapter meeting. Joined by Chris Heath ’72 (left), Tampa Bay Chapter President.

Tampa Bay recently hosted a big event for the 12th time. No - It was not the Super Bowl. It was the Frogman 5K Swim.

The Frogman 5K Swim started in 2010 after a prospective USNA candidate wanted to do something for Dan Cnosen ’02, who stepped on a land mine in September 2009 on his third day in Afghanistan. The student contacted Dan O’Shea ’91 who coordinated the swim in its first year with 34 swimmers. In the years that followed, the event grew with support and donations going to the Navy SEAL Foundation. On January 17th of this year, 150 swimmers participated, and they swam an extra 1/2 mile as the finish line had to be moved due to permit restrictions due to COVID.

Chris Quilty ’89 and Steve Swift ’87 are two swimmers that have participated every year. They were joined this year by RADM Mitch Bradley ’91, SOCCENT CDR, and Keven Navas ’99, a former Navy swimmer. Many others volunteered to support the event including Perry Dempsey ’72 and Brian Tsai ’16 as kayakers, and Gordo Peterson ’68. Gary Polansky ’69, who has attended every year, was also there to cheer on the swimmers. And- Joe Neal ’64, swam for his 8th time as the oldest swimmer!

Swimmers and volunteers gather for the 12th Tampa Bay Frog Man Swim started by USNA grads and supporting the Navy Seal Foundation.

Coronavirus continues to impact many of our annual events. However, our chapter intends to meet on our regular schedule for monthly meetings. We hold our monthly meetings at Tate’s Pizzeria on Westshore on the first Wednesday of each month at 1800. Look forward to seeing you there and your first drink is on us if you are a newbie!

EVENTS

The Election is complete!!! NOT THAT ONE! The GSMC one! With Mike DeManss ’73 stepping down after many, many years of dedicated service, the race for President came down to Amanda Foxton ’10 and Mike Thumm ’75. While Amanda received the most votes, unfortunately, she will have a truncated term (departing in Mid-May) because of an unexpected PCS Transfer she will make with her husband, Maj Josh Foxton ’09 USMC, out of the Southern Maryland area. At that point, Mike Thumm, as the runner-up, will assume the Presidency. Congratulations to both Amanda and Mike!!! For the coming year, the GSMC leadership team will be President Amanda or Mike, Vice President Scott Bruce ’79, Secretary Dale Allison ’78 and Treasurer Ted Herring ’67.

Please check your email and the GSMC website www.navyalumni.org for event updates throughout 2021!

GRADUATE PROFILE: LEROY DENNIS AND GENERAL MOTOR’S VETERAN HIRING INITIATIVES

by Shawn Hoch

I met LeRoy Dennis (USNA ’97) at the San Diego Service Academy Career Conference (SACC) in August 2018 in advance of my transition off Active Duty in April 2019.

The interview ultimately led to a job offer by LeRoy to join his team at General Motors (GM). LeRoy attended several SACCs since assuming a managerial role at GM and conducts applicant interviews as a manager. LeRoy and I spoke during GM’s 2021 Military Awareness Week which highlights past contributions of veterans and teaches managers about the skills that veterans bring to the table. What follows is LeRoy’s personal perspective and are not officially endorsed by GM.

Would you tell me about your background and how you ended up at GM?

LeRoy was raised in Miami and graduated USNA in 1997, majoring in Mechanical Engineering. He selected Surface Warfare and served on a number of ships, including as command of MCM Rotational Crew Swerve. He holds a Master’s in Information Systems and Operations from the Naval Postgraduate School and an MBA from the University of North Carolina.

Retiring in 2016, LeRoy attended a SACC conference as part of his transition. After interviewing with companies such as Pepsi, Northrop Grumman, and Wells Fargo, he ran into a General Motors hiring manager in an elevator who asked for his resume. Intrigued foremost by his leadership credentials, he was offered a trip to Michigan and ultimately a position. LeRoy never expected to live in Michigan or work at an automotive company. “You never know how a single networking conversation might end, and life rarely ends up going specifically to plan.”

What separates Academy graduates from other new hire candidates?

LeRoy’s goal is to be prepared to give on-the-spot job offers to military candidates. “The transition from active duty is a scary time! What the transition seminar doesn’t teach is how marketable and valuable your leadership skills are. This is especially true of line officers, who can do almost anything.” In fact, LeRoy often competes with other managers to recruit military officers due to high demand. At SACC, LeRoy’s perspective as a USNA grad gives him a distinct advantage in understanding the value of candidates. He notes that you do not need to a specific major in order to work at GM, and a Junior Officer’s experiences across varied disciplines all have direct applicability. A degree from the Naval Academy demonstrates the ability to learn concepts quickly, which is often more important than specific subject matter expertise.

GM divides its internal progression between “technical” and “people-focused” expertise. Officers are inherently peopleleaders. “Leading people is second nature. There’s no hesitancy and a bias towards taking action.” Moreover, officers “are innately able to manage both up and down the chain.” LeRoy compared an O-3 briefing their leadership to a GM new hire briefing C-suite executives. LeRoy is often asked by his peers whether this is what can be expected of every Academy graduate. His answer? A resounding “Yes!”

What do you think is more important to a transitioning officer, a strong LinkedIn profile or a well-crafted resume?

To LeRoy, resumes and in-person meeting trump LinkedIn. That being said, his peers often review LinkedIn as a window to a person’s character. His advice: Make sure you eliminate military jargon from your resume and your profile! As a fellow veteran, LeRoy is capable of gleaning information from a paper resume even if it has not been properly translated into terms a civilian understands. However, most hiring managers don’t have the same background.

What specific advice would you give to those transitioning today?

“Highlight your strengths: leadership; experience in safety culture, which applies everywhere and its often forgotten; and any accolades/ awards you’ve received.” He recommends being specific in your resume. “Include dollar amounts for systems that you’ve worked on, because it is a direct reflection of the value of trust that was placed in you. If you’ve made a process improvement, be able to explain a dollar value of increased efficiency. If you led people, include numbers – and small groups are as important as big groups. Keep multiple resumes specific to the individual industry of interest.” Once hired, LeRoy equated inputs to your own civilian performance reviews with Navy “FITREP theory” in that you should “feel dirty” after bragging about yourself, to give the reviewer plenty of data to work with. Finally, “market your brand, and your brand starts with leadership first and crisis management when needed.”

New Mexico is earning National recognition for its efficiency in administering our Covid vaccine doses delivered, compared to other states. Periodic reviews of this efficiency

rank our State in the high 90+ percent range of doses delivered to doses received. However, our Chapter has recently learned that for our military service, there is a path through the Veterans Administration for VAregistered NM veterans that helps bring vaccinations to them sooner. While the State is currently scheduling vaccinations for those age 75+, the VA is scheduling and administering vaccine to those who are 65+ years of age. A veteran with a VAissued ID card can also arrange for their spouse or designated Family Caregiver to be vaccinated at the same time as the veteran if they are previously registered in the VA Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC). With just over 1.6 million adults in NM, receiving recognition for your military service as a registered veteran and being eligible for an early vaccine administered with the convenience of a drive-through vaccination site is bringing relief to many. If you qualify either as a registered veteran or as a designated Family Caregiver, whether or not you currently receive medical care from the Veterans Administration, contact the VA at (505) 265-1711 or go to the VA website at va.gov to schedule your vaccination appointment. Clear Path for Veterans in Chittenango, NY currently is not having the Wednesday lunch due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Alumni, family, friends, USNA parents, and others with an interest in the Naval Academy are welcome to join the Chapter at all Chapter functions. Call (315-663-7490) or e-mail Bob Fegan to let us know if you plan to attend a function.

Future Chapter activities will be addressed as they are planned. The Chapter’s website is a good source of current information.

The commemorative desk clocks for the parents of the CNY USNA graduates in the Class of 2020 have been mailed. The clocks are normally presented at the annual Welcome Aboard Picnic which was not held this past year. The delay was due to our supplier closing down the business for several months. The clocks were sent to the parents of Jack Hogan (Auburn), Sargon Babla (Fayetteville), Hunter McGavran (Clinton), Eliot McRoberts (Binghamton), Andrew Shea (Sterling), and Robert Durham (Lacona). In some cases the parents probably pass the clocks to their graduate. The clocks for the parents of the CNY USNA graduates in the Class of 2021 are being processed by our supplier.

The Chapter has instituted the payment of a Life Membership Fee as an option to Annual Dues. As the information was provided through the USNA Alumni Association, there a quite a few Alumni in the CNY area who may not have received the information so it is being provided herewith.

The Central New York Chapter leadership had discussed offering Life Membership and with inputs from a few Alumni, the following table shows what we have decided:

Year Groups Life Membership Fee 1941-1950 $0 1951-1960 $50 1961-1970 $75 1971-1980 $100 1981-1990 $125 1991-2000 $150 2001-2010 $175 2011-2020 $200 2021- $200 If 40% of the Alumni in the Central New York area opt for Life Membership and with over $2,000 currently in the Chapter’s non-profit checking account with M&T, the Chapter would have over $10,000 which is more than enough to support the Chapter’s financial commitments through 2030.

Alumni who have paid Dues for the Chapter year 1 June 2020 to 31 May 2021 and for subsequent years may apply those Dues to their Life Membership Fee. Also those Alumni who have made Donations to the Chapter may apply all or part of the Donation to their Life Membership Fee. Each Alumni to whom the above applies should contact Bob Fegan (bobfegan64@gmail.com) (315-663-7490) and let him know what to do or to check what your Dues status may be.

For those Alumni who choose not to pay the Life Membership Fee, the annual Chapter membership fee of $20 will be continued. Additionally, the Chapter year is being changed from “1 June to 31 May” to “1 January to 31 December”. Those Alumni who have paid dues for the current Chapter year (1 June to 31 May) will have their membership extended to 31 December 2021.

The Chapter year of “1 June to 31 May’ was established in 2005 when the CNY Chapter was recognized by the USNA Alumni Association (AA) by a letter dated 11 May 2005. Changing the Chapter year to “1 January to 31 December” aligns with the traditional calendar.

Payment of Dues (Life Membership or Annual) can be made in cash or check at a Chapter function or by mailing a check payable to “CNY Chapter of USNA Alumni” to Bob Fegan, 1570 US Route 20, Cazenovia, NY 13035-9202. Please provide a note to indicate your USNA AA status (Life Member, Annual or Not a member) and your email address to ensure that the Chapter’s database is complete and up-to-date. Alumni are encouraged to check the AA database periodically to ensure that their profile information is up-to-date. Metro New York Chapter (NAANY)

There is a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel as we continue to battle Covid-19. More of the Cape Fear Chapter members report receiving their vaccinations as more mass vaccination sites ramp up in North Carolina. While ZOOM meetings have allowed the Chapter to hold monthly “virtual gatherings,” we all look forward to resuming in-person lunches and social events.

After a great turnout for the Fukushima nuclear crisis presentation by Admiral Kirk Donald ’75, USN (Ret.), the Chapter held its annual “business meeting” via ZOOM on 16 Feb. Twenty one members were present: Russ Brune ’92, John Casey ’78, Paul Dahlquist ’72, Jack Dambaugh ’64, Ray Decker ’72, Dave Gould ’64’ Rick Haley ’72, Gregg Hamelin ’72, Eve Krauss ’06, Bob Lakis ’79, Bernie Maguire ’64, Jack McDermott ‘63, Tom McQueen ’69, Newt Morgan ’69, Paul Normand ’74, Dave Parsons ’69, Craig Rankin ’75, Steve Rogness ’75, Dave Scheu ’67, Jim Strouse ’66 and Steve Yandle ’75. The Chapter leadership briefed the members on several key areas: Chapter organization – expansion

of Board of Directors and a call for volunteers to support our speaker program, event coordination, and communication outreach. Special congratulations to our new Board Directors: Dave Scheu ’67, Russ Brune ’92 and Eve Krauss ’06 who will augment the current Board slate.

Steve Yandle ’75, our Secretary/ Treasurer, provided a financial update noting that a review was underway by Dave Parsons ‘69 and Michael Brown ’70. Thank you, gentlemen. Additionally, the Chapter will adopt a 3-year budget to support future initiatives.

Paul Normand ’74, our VP, briefed his team-oriented membership drive with a goal of 100 regular members by 2024. This target will almost double our current rolls and hopefully, inject alumni from less seasoned classes into our ranks!

Paul also updated the members on the 4 Mission Support Activities. Of note, the Chapter will contact the two local high schools that have a current Navy JROTC program and explore partnership opportunities. More to follow in future Shipmate news!

Conditions permitting, the Chapter is planning to hold its first in-person gathering this June or July at the Cape Fear Country Club. We are calling this informal cocktail party –“Summer Cruise 2021.” Chapter members and their “drags” will be encouraged to wear cruise attire and share youngster cruise stories on the Club terrace. Dixie cups and white works not required! After a year plus of public health restrictions, this motley crew is ready for a “cruise” anywhere!

Projecting ahead: the Chapter hopes to engage the Black Knights on the golf course this fall. The 1st Annual Army-Navy Golf “Tea Fight” is being coordinated by Gregg Hamelin ’72 and Hugh McWilliams ’72. Also, we hope to re-join the local West Point Society in December for an ArmyNavy Game party in Wilmington.

Our formal 3rd Annual Dark Ages Dinner has been pushed to March 2022.

The Chapter’s 2021 Calendar of Events is posted on our website: capefearnc.usnachapters.net. During normal, non-Covid times: All local graduates, Blue & Gold Officers, and parents of midshipmen or graduates are invited to join the Chapter and participate in our activities. Most lunch meetings are held on the second Thursday of the month except when a quarterly BYCM (Bring Your Company Mug) social or other special event like our Army-Navy Game party occurs.

Chapter lunch meetings begin at 1145 and are held at the Cape Fear Country Club. All members planning to attend should contact Michael Brown ’70, our Senior Mess Officer and Club sponsor <mcb0347@gmail. com> at least 2 days before the meeting so he can coordinate food service with the Club staff. Cost is $18 cash at lunch.

Greetings from the Research Triangle Park of North Carolina,

Our 6th Virtual Luncheon in February welcomed Captain Shaun McAndrew ’93 USN (Ret.) who relocated to the RTP with her family after her retirement as the CO of the NROTC units in Idaho and Eastern Washington. An aviator for service

selection, she served as Batt Officer in Bancroft Hall for 3 years, 2014-17. As change is constant at our Academy, Shaun shared her related experiences and entertained questions from an on-line audience of 26 grads representing classes from 1950s to 2010s. Grads included: Steve Gillespie ’87, Lauren Wilson ’09, George Lipscomb ’87, Jacob Fox ’13, Doug Suriano ’84, Jim Kinney ’60, Jeff Edgar ’81, Tom Clemons ’82, Sankey Blanton ’71, John Walls ’86, Dave Clement ’80, Jennifer Clement ’81, Warren Schultz ’71, Bill Flannery ’83, Kim Tageson ’78, Mike Kapsch ’76, Paul Stiller ’58, Brad Osmun ’09, Bill Marsh ’73, Norm Elliott ’58, Chris Perrien ’74, Perry Taylor ’71, Girard Lew ’60, Bob Adams ’73 and Ted Triebel ’64.

Joining the luncheon was Captain Bill Coleman ’95 USN, our newest member of the Chapter. Amongst Bill’s long-range plans is the prospect of relocating to the RTP upon retirement. In this regard, our chapter offers a network of transition services and professional connections as our grads are working in firms of nearly every size and type across the Research Triangle Park region.

We’re unable to host our 11th Annual Dark Ages Dinner and we look forward to our March Virtual Luncheon Discussion with Colonel Christian Cabiness ’90 USMC (Ret.) who will discuss the USMC’s Force Design 2030 plans and programs.

Recognized for the 4th consecutive year as a Distinguished Chapter in the USNA AA network, our Triangle Chapter comprises 170+ active members from eight decades of USNA classes, their families and a growing set of supporters (parents, friends, all-Navy veterans and families). To view the schedule of future events, please visithttps://www. usnatriangle.com or follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook. com/USNAAARTP/

We are eager for the resumption of in-person Chapter gatherings.

Here in Oregon and SW Washington we are busy trying to get power and internet back after a pretty impressive ice storm last week. Many remain without power still weeks after the storm.

The leadership transition is complete with John Adams ’69 taking over for Mike Carmichael ’69 as president. Mike will continue on the council as vice president. We continue our weekly “Zoom Happy Hours’ each Wednesday. We have been doing them for over 8 months now and participation continues to grow. The participants in February are: Mike Carmichael ’69. John Adams ’69, Ted Scypinski ’90, Mark Cooskey ’72, Doug Ballard ’74, John Frerichs ’50, David Lutes ’63, Tim Myers ’64, Janette Sandberg ’96, Tex Hawkins ’67, Ron Smith ’72, Jack Kohl ’65, Frank Swientek ’66, Jill Roberts ’94, Jay Wyley ’93 and Barbette Lowndes ’80. We have been honored to have Jill Richards ’94 join us for the last several meetings. Jill will be replacing Butch Bewick ’63 as our BGO Area Coordinator in June. Also, at one of our last meeting, Barbette Lowndes’80 joined us. Barbette is running for the position of Western Regional Trustee. She gave us her background and talked about what she plans to do if elected.

It is with heavy heart that we report the February passing of local alums John DeZell ’55 and Stan Sharp ’58. Both will be buried at Willamette National Cemetery. Additionally, we lost Marky Hough the wife of Jim Hough ’66. She was also interred in February at Willamette with a beautiful ceremony attended by several friends & fellow-residents of their Mary’s Woods retirement community and Jim’s classmates Mike Young and Frank Swientek ‘66 (& wife Diane).

MORE BENEFITS TO RV LIVING!

Due to COVID, more people than ever have been forced to work remotely. You might have worked remotely so long that you’re now dreaming of trading fluorescent office lighting for sunrises and sunsets by creating your “digital nomad” lifestyle exploring your state or heading across this amazing country? Might be that you used quarantine time to watch documentaries about “digital nomads” who live plus work safely from an RV that is now their “New Office” location. Some turned their RV into an on-site/backyard business sanctuary or actually had those wheels rolling along the road to work and travel simultaneously. The pandemic creating an increase in remote workers has encouraged many to take up the “digital nomad” or “work from anywhere” lifestyle.

Working from an RV isn’t a new concept but has become increasingly popular. Technology makes it possible for “digital nomads” to work from remote locations while staying connected to their livelihoods. Full time RVers and weekend warrior RVers have found ways to have the best of both worlds — jobs that allow flexibility to combine a work and travel lifestyle. If you have stable internet connections, it’s possible to work from the road and/or your own backyard or both. Working from the road isn’t always as glamorous as the media portrays, but once you find a work-travel balance, being a “digital nomad” becomes your new norm. As with any new situation, it might take time to work out the kinks.

Organizing your RV work space is key to finding harmony between

your working and living space as your “rig” might be used for both purposes. However, do allow yourself to enjoy this flexible work and living lifestyle by having your office window facing the great outdoors — plus this avoids glare on your work site.

Set realistic work and travel expectations. It’s hard to balance work and play plus travel time, especially for newbie RVers. It’s imperative to set aside dedicated work hours as working without structure directly conflicts with why you probably set your dream in motion in the first place. Plan for dedicated travel days and workdays, balancing work time and free time for sightseeing, hiking and other activities of your dreams. This lifestyle flexibility is awesome!

Here is a first-hand testimonial from USNA ’72 Tim Hallihan’s spouse Vanessa, proving that this remote working model honestly works. “WFRV - Love it/Love it/ Love it!!!! I have “Zoomed” from the International Peace Gardens in ND, watched hot air balloons being launched in Eastern Ohio while collaborating on “Microsoft Teams” and enjoyed the green flash in Key West FL while “webexing” with colleagues. The hiring interview was a little noisy on the road during a thunderstorm (thank goodness for the mute button) but no one seemed to notice or be bothered. I’ve been putting in 40 hours a week and enjoying the RV lifestyle at the same time. The Alabama white BBQ sauce came off my computer keys easily, Shiloh/Gettysburg National Battlefields both provided much needed introspection and reflection for a white paper I had to draft, the dog is still by my side, and the USNA flag is flying high on our flag pole. We’ve met new friends while social distancing outdoors and look forward to seeing our USNA RV Chapter friends at Watts Bar, TN later this year. WFRV has been the best experience this year and looks to be “new normal”.

Yet another benefit is that RVing is less expensive — as well as safer — than other travel methods, including private auto travel. Consider — when traveling by RV, you already have a place to sleep, thus no hotel conditions. You sleep in your own bed plus no worry about buying airline tickets. You can either prepare food on your RV or serve that “to-go meal” you picked up or those “leftovers” you brought from home. In other words, your home and “new office” now has wheels!

Some folks are more than happy to live the “at home” lifestyle. For some others, there’s nothing better than the open road! RVing is perfect for folks still wanting to travel where you don’t have to use public restrooms. Given your choice of RV, you can shower, cook, sleep as well as work. The “digital nomad” lifestyle of working remotely and traveling can take some adjusting, but it’s totally doable and absolutely worth your efforts.

As we continue to operate in a virtual world in the North Texas region, one of the silver linings is the ability to attend events and connect with others from outside of our region. Recently our alumni had the opportunity to attend a two day conference starting February 9th, titled “Women in Combat” hosted by the TriService Nursing Research Program. The program focused on disseminating new research and evidence based practice efforts as well as focusing on future research and policy needs related to servicewomen.

The Alumni Association and Foundation recently hosted a Know the Ropes event featuring Jennifer Swanson ‘90 hosting an explorer event aimed at kids to differentiate those exploring both space and the ocean’s depths. She answered the question on who is the ultimate explorer, the astronaut or the aquanaut.

On February 2nd, Christian Espinosa led a round table discussion on Cyber Security and why we are losing the cyberwar. Christian is the Managing Director of Cerberus Sentinel, and an Air Force Academy grad. Christian has written a book called The Smartest Person in the Room: The Root Cause and New Solution for Cybersecurity, which

launched on February 2nd. His book arms technical leaders with a 7-Step Secure Methodology to address how a high IQ, common with highly technical staff, is a lost superpower when effective communication, true intelligence, and self-confidence are missing.

Visit our North Texas Alumni page for upcoming virtual events. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Congrats to all the class of ‘21 as they head to the fleet!

That was quite the winter storm that blew through Texas. Many in the Houston-area were without power and water for several days. Hopefully, you all didn’t suffer too many burst pipes and could enjoy the snow. I know some class of ‘37 and ‘39 kids that did.

An attempted likeness of polar explorer Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd, class of 1912 By the time this prints, the idea of snow in Houston will sound preposterous again. We’ll be back to the heat and humidity that we’re used to. If vaccination rates continue to increase, we will hopefully have resumed our monthly in-person luncheons. We all look forward to seeing each other again to share sea stories. Stay tuned to the chapter website (http://txgulfcoast. usnachapters.net/) and social media pages for any updates.

Greetings from the UK Chapter, where we are just about to finish two complete months in the current lockdown — where has the time gone?!

The gradual reopening of life in England is now underway, as laid out by the prime minister. Beginning with schools on 8 March, the British government has outlined a multistage plan to transition to back to life as we knew it, before COVID became such a driving force. By 21 June, virtually all activities will be allowed to go forward without restrictions: hospitality venues will be fully open, international travel will be allowed, restrictions on large gatherings will be lifted, and we can all get our hair trimmed again, go to the gym, and have a proper day of shopping.

It’s been a long past couple of months.

As of this writing, the Academy is still drawing up the brigade’s summer activities schedule in the face of all the uncertainty that rode in with COVID, so we have no concrete news of any sponsored travel plans. As always, though, the chapter stands at the ready to welcome groups of mids who have the chance to explore post-graduation educational opportunities and British culture.

In the meantime, please consider updating your contact info at usna.com. It’s fast, it’s easy, and it helps your classmates find you!

Until next time, stay safe, get your COVID jab, and GO NAVY!

As I write this in late February, a return to some sense of “normalcy” has not happened yet, but we in Hampton Roads remain hopeful that sometime this summer or early in the fall we will be able to resume the momentum and proactive efforts

and events that have propelled us to Distinguished Chapter status in three of the last four years.

At our February Board of Directors meeting, exploring future events were a main topic of discussion. With warmer weather not too far away, we kicked around tentative plans to try to conduct some outdoor events such as walking or biking the trails in some local parks; a return venture to downtown Norfolk’s Elizabeth River Trail; perhaps a summer picnic; and eventually a happy hour or two at local venues with outdoor facilities. And of course, we are all hoping that come September, we will be able to gather again for some serious Navy football watching! It remains to be seen if local safety restrictions and considerations will allow us to revive our annual “live” Plebe Recognition Dinner in early June for our local members of the Class of 2025; but we fully intend to recognize those incoming Plebes and NAPsters in some appropriate fashion. Anyone having some ideas for future virtual or “live” events should consider contacting our Events Chair Al Ponessa ’68 or Chapter President Renee Reedy ’81. All ideas are welcome!

One important action we were able to complete at that Board meeting was the unanimous reelection of our current dedicated and hard-working Chapter Trustee, Mark Rupprecht ’76. “Rup” will serve for three more years as our representative to the USNAAA Board of Trustees.

The speaker at our February Networking Breakfast was Neil McNulty, the founder and CEO of MMG Leaders, a leading human capital consulting firm. Neil’s thoughts and approaches to searching for and finding employment for transitioning service members are indeed unique, but they have proven to be highly effective. For March, our Breakfast Coordinator Adam Kinnear ’94 hoped to have our Chapter Trustee discuss current initiatives and projects at USNA; and also invited to speak were the three candidates for the Mid-Atlantic Region Trustee position: Vince Balderrama ’78, Gregory Glaros ’86, and Julianna Vida ’94.

Please stay safe and healthy out there, and as the uncertain way ahead continues to develop, continue to check our website and Facebook page for information on Chapter initiatives and events as well as USNA news and updates. Dick Enderly ‘71

The Quantico Area Chapter (QAC) held its monthly virtual breakfast Jan. 8 with guest speaker Franz J. Sedelmayer. Mr. Sedelmayer was a German security consultant and CEO of a U.S.-based multinational asset recovery company, and he also authored “Welcome to Putingrad: The Incredible Story of the Only Man to Collect Money from Vladimir Putin.” He spoke about his experiences in Russia, his perspective and personal interactions with Vladimir Putin, and more particularly, his lawsuit with the Federation of Russia. He also answered several questions from participants about his experiences in Russia and thoughts on the U.S.-Russia relationship. The 23 members in attendance thought the presentation to be extremely interesting and also entertaining!

The Quantico Area Chapter (QAC) held its quarterly council meeting virtually Jan. 11. The chapter council members reviewed the financial report, provided updates on the various committees, reviewed the activities calendar, discussed old and new items of business, and spoke about actions to continue to grow membership. It was also noted the chapter added 4 members since the last meeting as part of the efforts of the President and membership committee. The chapter also spoke about planning efforts for a upcoming breakfasts, a virtual history lesson on the Battle of Chancellorsville, and an upcoming golf outing.

QAC members and family also participated in an Army Navy Basketball watch party Jan. 23 at a local brewery. The participants cheered on Navy to a great win!

The chapter also held its February monthly virtual breakfast, Feb. 5 with Vice Adm. Robert Sharp serving as the guest speaker. VADM Sharp serves as the Director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA). He spoke about his personal experiences and naval career, particularly his time in Desert Storm, which helped shape his interest in geospatial and intelligence and guided his path to the NGA. He spoke of the capabilities NGA provides, and the current great-power competition and how geospatial-intelligence matters, as stated in the NGA motto – “Know the Earth. Show the Way. Understand the World.”

The chapter intends to continue its virtual breakfast series until it is safe to reunite in person when it will resume its in-person breakfasts. The Chapter encourages all alumni in our area to join the Chapter. Please visit http://usnaalumni quantico.usnachapters.net/ for more information about the Chapter.

The anti-racist resilience circle Feb. 1 led by Alberto Ramos ’10 was a huge success! Thank you to all who participated and shared your thoughts and experiences. The conversations were very engaging and left many of us with ideas for future events. We had more than 30 members of classes ranging a half century from the 70s to 2018. Additionally, it was a great collaboration between the chapter and the Naval Academy Minority Association (NAMA), with special thanks to Trish Neville ’97 and Kaila Julia ‘12. We look forward to hosting additional events with them and other affinity groups.

Dr. Jill Rough ‘96 led a discussion Feb. 24 on “The State of America’s Civil-Military Divide.” The conversations were deep and thought-provoking with 30 participants who were eager to jump into the dialog or drop comments into the chat. We are so proud, as so many of you are, to host this Policy Series. The recording will be available in the members-only section, along with other events. Be sure to catch up on the conversation and be ready to participate at the next event.

It has been a productive year thus far.

Jill is also working on another midshipman candidate evening mid-April in order to assist USNA with their recruiting efforts. By the time this is printed, the event will likely have occurred, so check out our Facebook page to see how it went! The”Red Beach Radio” podcast is live! Be sure to subscribe by navigating to iTunes on Apple (https:// podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ red-beach-radio/id1552796028). The show will be available in other podcast distribution services (e.g. Pandora, Spotify, etc.) over the course of the next month. Many thanks to Sean Papso ’08 for recording the sessions!

The chapter is exploring the possibility of hosting several pool (aka billiards) teams throughout our area to play in the amateur pool players league (https://poolplayers. com/). I was introduced to the league while in flight school and loved playing. Be on the lookout for an email or survey to identify membership interest.

We have secured a partnership with Freedom Boat Club (https://www. freedomboatclub.com/) and they will be extending a discount to our members. We are formalizing the agreement to ensure you can make the most of the partnership.

The next career transition event will explore employment in higher education. Our panelists will discuss their experience in working for these organizations and answer your questions. Registration information will be available soon.

We have recently partnered with the Society of West Point DC and Corporate Gray (https://www. corporategray.com/) to help greatly enhance our Transition Program. You will find many more opportunities to not only learn how to conquer the challenges faced in a transition but also find employment opportunities. We will create a section on our site to share all this information.

We will continue our popular bike rides this year. Please be sure to thank Lt. Col. Kate Murray ‘00 for all her great work coordinating these events and hosting them.

Don’t forget about our mentorship program! We are very excited about this effort. Sign up on our website to either be a mentor or mentee in our new program. (https://usnagwc.org/ Mentorship-Program)

Finally, we are posting videos to the USNA GWC YouTube channel (USNA GWC). Be sure to subscribe to the channel and share with alumni.
