REEL TECHNOLOGY GLOSSARY 9
REEL TECHNOLOGY
SHIMANO HAVE A REPUTATION FOR ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE AND INNOVATION THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. BELOW IS AN OVERVIEW OF THE MOST IMPORTANT SHIMANO REEL FEATURES. MANY FEATURES, ORIGINALLY ONLY ON THE MOST TECHNICAL REELS, ARE NOW WIDELY AVAILABLE. THESE FEATURES INCLUDE X SHIP, AERO WRAP II AND A RC SPOOLS.
LINE LAY AND LINE MANAGEMENT
Aero Wrap and the advanced Aero Wrap II is a worm gear oscillation system with a specially designed pitch to create optimal oscillation speeds. This provides superb uniform line lay to reduce loss of energy during the cast. Aero Wrap II is considered one of the best line lay systems in the world.
Varispeed and the latest version called VariSpeed II oscillation system moves with two variable speeds to lay the line flat and smooth onto the spool. This provides trouble-free, longer distant casts. Varispeed is found on budget and midpriced Shimano reels.
Aerowave Aerowave is used on some Shimano saltwater spinning reels. This oscillation system is simple in nature, yet produces excellent line lay with both braid and mono.
Shimano AR-C Spool is a patented spool design with an angled spool lip. This design enables the line to leave the spool with less friction and in smaller coils resulting in longer more accurate casts. AR-C spools are proven to reduce backlash and wind knots when using braid. AR-C spools are now standard on almost all Shimano reels.
Oscillation One speed Oscillation -the spool moves at a consistent speed. Two speed Oscillation - the spool moves at two different speeds. Slow Oscillation - the spool moves slowly allowing more line wraps per cycle. Super Slow Oscillation - the spool moves very slowly forming almost parallel wraps of line.
The special grooved design of the Shimano Power Roller significantly reduces line twist and is a big advantage when using thin mono and braid.
ADDITIONAL FEATURES
Super Stopper II eliminates backward movement and free play in the handle when the reel is set in anti-reverse.
Rigid Support Drag Rigid Support Drag eliminates spool movement and wobble, even at light drag settings. The result is an incredibly smooth drag even at extremely light settings.
Waterproof Drag Using special protection gaskets, the drag is protected against the intrusion of water for more consistent drag performance.
Fightin’ Drag A secondary drag system used on some rear drag reels. Fightin’ Drag enables the easy adjustment of the drag setting whilst playing the fish.
Baitrunner Spool II allows the drag setting to be switched from a pre-set freespool to a pre-set drag setting by adjusting the Baitrunner lever at the front of the spool.
Instant Drag allows the drag setting to be switched from free spool to a ‘fight’ setting by tightening the Instant Drag lever on the front of the spool in only a few turns.
