MADDISON DETATE - BIOGRAPHY I am a student artist who has been self taught up until college, where I decided to pursue art as a career. I did mostly traditional art, learning and adapting an art style from watching cartoons and anime, then adding realistic aspects to my art. My mediums are traditional pencil and paper, alcohol-based markers, and gouache painting. Most of my work is character design or scene illustration between those characters, storyboarding and comic making. I have been drawing and creating my current style since sixth grade, though I have been creating art my entire life. I am branching out into digital design through this class to broaden my horizons and flesh out my skillset.

DIGITAL ART Silhouettes: A and S, Digital, 2020 This illustration was to help with understanding silhouettes and to assist in choosing interesting poses to convey personality. We had to create one or two characters to create a story from, but I already had two characters in mind. All I had to do was bring them to life in an art piece. Choosing the poses and going minimalistic was a challenge, as I love adding little details to everything, but it was satisfying and made the piece turn out well in the end.

DIGITAL ART Muted Flames, Digital, 2020 I had plenty of ideas for how I wanted this to look. These characters and this scene are from a novel I have been writing since the beginning of high school. There were multiple different designs and layouts for this piece, but this final one was the winner. It was a learning process figuring out which thumbnail would make the best movie poster regardless of what I thought was the best.

PERSONAL WORK Zahvia, Gouache, 2020 This piece is the first in a set of eleven I am working on as I type this. It is a character design series with every individual character representing an element. This woman, Zahvia, represents the element of Nature. Plants, animals, those sorts of things. Her design is cutesy and flowery, her eyes mirroring a goat’s and flowers adorning her hair. I wanted to be sure to convey what kind of person she was as well through the pose, so I went with something fun and cute.

PERSONAL WORK Tonitrugur, Gouache, 2020 This is the second piece in the series of eleven that I am working on as I write this. This woman, Tonitrugur, represents the element of Electricity. Her design is simple buy jagged, one foot is bare to ground her when using her powers, and her hair looks like a thundering storm, frizzy with static. Her personality is conveyed through her pose; unsure, hesitant, withdrawn. She’s like a thunderstorn: beautiful and silent until the lightning strikes.
