A MESSAGE FROM Dear Sacred Heart community,

I thank you for welcoming me to Sacred Heart during my first year as Head of School.

Our 173rd school year was not easy for anyone, and, perhaps because of that, there is much to celebrate. The students, faculty, and families demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination following our seniors’ mantra, “Grit and Grace.”

The year’s theme, Every Girl Every Day, was front and center all the way through June. Starting the summer before the school year, even while I was unpacking boxes in my new home on King Street, the faculty worked hard to prepare for an unusual year, with the student experience at the forefront. Behind it all, the administration and staff worked tirelessly to create, amend, and re-create plans, room configurations, and communications to accommodate changing conditions and health mandates. Through it all, we have benefited from the incredible gift of time and talent of our medical advisory team. Sacred Heart led the way with in-person learning in our area. This would not have been possible without the generosity of so many, including the Senior Class Parents, whose financial support allowed us to build a new health and wellness suite and set the stage for further wellness initiatives and campus improvements.

This report celebrates the donors who supported Sacred Heart in this unprecedented year. Along with traditional operational expenditures, COVID-19 expenses were over $1 million, and the generosity of this community allowed us to meet this challenge. We exceeded our fundraising goal for the Fund for Sacred Heart, and I am grateful for that support.

The lessons we have learned in this pandemic are empowering us to innovate in exciting ways, reaching families and alumnae virtually with discussion groups, events, and speakers. Traditions such as the running of the halls, First Holy Communion, the Mother-Daughter Liturgy, and the Dadrigals all happened.

Today, our challenge is to take those lessons and continue to build upon them to provide a student experience without limits.

Our school is brimming with the energy of more than 600 creative, curious, joyful students and a grateful faculty and staff who are here to nurture and care for them. We may not be completely free from the challenges of health and safety precautions necessary to run the school in-person as we move through the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, we are here with a strong heart, keen intellect, desire to serve others, and ready to tackle the challenges ahead in true Sacred Heart spirit.

Our Mission Sacred Heart Greenwich, founded in 1848, is an independent Catholic, college preparatory school for young women from kindergarten through grade 12, with a coed early childhood education program.

Sacred Heart, steeped in a solid academic tradition, educates women to have independence of judgment, personal freedom, and strength of character so that they can become leaders with broad intellectual and spiritual horizons.

The school welcomes students of all races, socioeconomic backgrounds, and religious beliefs. True to its international heritage, the school provides students with experiences of diversity.

A LETTER FROM THE Board Chair Dear Sacred Heart community,

The words of our foundress Saint Madeline Sophie Barat, “Courage and Confidence,” served as the guidepost for our entire Sacred Heart community this past year.

The COVID-19 pandemic continued to present challenges to families and schools alike.

However, through strong financial stewardship and the support of our entire community, Sacred Heart emerged from this challenging year with a renewed clarity of purpose. We can be proud of our commitment to Every Girl Every Day, our excellent college placement for our seniors, and our campus upgrades. Sacred Heart Greenwich continues to advance because of its unwavering focus on our mission and because of you, our supporters.

The Board of Trustees remains focused on the Sacred Heart mission and has created a stand-alone Board committee titled “Living Our Mission” to focus on our student experiences from Barat to 12th grade. The work of this committee combines efforts from our Leadership & Wellness subcommittee, our One Heart subcommittee, and our Education to Mission subcommittee. These three entities represent our core value proposition to families: to deliver a top-tier educational experience while supporting and amplifying each of our students’ gifts and aspirational goals.

Alexandra Lewis ’01

Alexandra Leah Lewis is an anesthesiologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Lewis graduated Sacred Heart Greenwich in 2001 and received her degree in the History of Science and History of Medicine from Yale University.

She pursued her master’s in International Health Policy and Health Economics at the London School of Economics, and later gained admission to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. After medical school, she went on to complete her residency in anesthesiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Medical School, and subsequently finished a fellowship in thoracic anesthesia at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Lewis is now pursuing an MBA at Columbia Business School. She has served as a member of GreenwichMaplehurst Alumnae Board since 2020.

Carmen Hughes P’27,’31 Carmen Edelweise Hughes is the founder and CEO of Edelweise Consulting, which partners with companies of all sizes to create and implement effective DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) strategies and training sessions with measurable success. Hughes formerly worked at JPMorgan Chase for 20 years where she successfully navigated her career from a back-office operations role to her dream job on the trading floor in fixed income sales.

Hughes received her Bachelor of Business Administration from Howard University’s School of Business and is a Cornell University Certified Diversity Practitioner.

As an Associate Certified Coach credentialed by the International Coaching Federation, Hughes is able to connect with her clients and move them forward to success however they define it for themselves.

Hughes is active in her community and serves on four boards: Gabrielle’s Wings, Sacred Heart Greenwich, United Way of Western Connecticut, and Waterside School. She loves to travel with her husband and three kids, plays golf, and is an avid runner. To date, she has completed two marathons and many half marathons.

September 14: The Class of 2021 spent a beautiful New England fall day by the water for its Senior Class retreat.

October 21: As is tradition, the sophomore class received their Mater medals.

October: The Alumnae Association hosted a month-long food drive that fed 144 local families.

February 19: Faculty members came out with a podcast series, “Stories From the Heart,” focused on wellness and self-exploration.

MARCH March 11: Upper School students enjoyed a well-deserved break and an opportunity to build community during a carnival themed Congé!

April 10–11: Upper School Theater production of Annie

February 5: Several students in the Upper and Middle Schools were recognized by the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards!

April 14: The seniors presented each junior with a class ring.

April 27: The newest addition to the Sacred Heart campus, the Snack Bar, officially opened!

April 15: Sacred Heart Film Festival

November 20: The first grade Chinese, Spanish, and French students performed the play, Little Red Hen in our outdoor amphitheater!

December 1: Six Upper School students participated in the NAIS Online Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC). The conference focused on teaching the participants to selfreflect, build allies, and form a community.

NOVEMBER

December 10: Students celebrated Computer Science Week! Activities included a guest speaker from IBM, drone-flying prizes, and many certificates of completion to show for it!

December 15: Upper School students donated gifts to families and children at the Carver Center.

DECEMBER

November 21: The Upper School fall play, Much Ado About Nothing, was transformed into a modern-day, pandemic-conscious show!

November 18: Alumnae Media Networking Event

January 15: Fifth graders worked together to mummify dolls as part of their Egyptian circuit!

JANUARY December 21: The annual Christmas Pageant and Concert was presented on a new, virtual platform for all to see!

January 29: The Upper School Mock Trial team competed virtually in Connecticut’s Civics First competition!

May 15: Second graders received the sacrament of First Holy Communion.

MAY May 24: The 48-hour Giving Challenge “Shine Our Light on King Street” celebrated the vision of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat and our commitment to girls’ education!

JUNE May 25: The seniors received their Sacred Heart Passports as an induction into the alumnae society!

“While 2020–2021 was a year filled with physical distancing and Zoom sessions, the Parents’ Association was still able to focus on community building. We gathered by Zoom to learn about art, flower arranging, had a bit of meditation, and heard from some of our fathers whose personal stories of athletic achievement were nothing short of inspiring! We transformed our cars and welcomed our youngest students for a Halloween trunk parade. We celebrated our faculty and staff with heartfelt messages and delicious box lunches, and also made sure that our hardworking faculty and staff knew we were thinking of them each throughout the year by providing monthly breakfast treats to show our thanks. We managed to come together as a community, hearing from different speakers as well as taking the time to catch up virtually or in safe, physically distanced ways. We were thankful to have our students in school every day and by extension were able to keep the heartbeat of our school community connected while apart.”—Lisa Burke Fallon ’89, PA President

PAMELA JUAN HAYES ’64 The Sacred Heart Greenwich community mourns the loss of its longtime leader, Pamela Juan Hayes ’64, who passed away on September 15, 2021. Pam devoted her life to the mission of the Society of the Sacred Heart. As a student, alumna, teacher, Middle School Head at Greenwich and 91st Street, and Head of School at San Francisco and Greenwich, Pam was a true child of the Sacred Heart.

A leader for our times, Pam’s vision was practical; she recognized the wisdom in Madeleine Sophie’s words: “Times change, and we must change with them.”

The PJH Initiative for Academic Excellence, launched in 2019 on the eve of her retirement and completed in 2020, honored Pam’s 50 years of service to Sacred Heart schools and her transformational leadership. This initiative accomplished the following: › The Rose Scholarship, for Middle School students › A snack bar and trophy cases in the Athletic Center › The newly established ice hockey program › Support of the Theatre department › Education to Mission programming › Innovation in the curriculum

As a memorial to Pam’s enduring legacy intertwining an education of mind and heart to develop women leaders of courage, compassion, and conviction, the School has established an endowment to launch the FUTURES program: Foundations in Thinking, Research, Entrepreneurship, and Social Action. FUTURES is a mission-based, integrated program enabling girls K–12 to build foundational skills through innovative academic and extracurricular initiatives.
