Always a master of material, Judy Onofrio has been creating sculpture from bone for the past decade. Gradually over time, her work has shifted from the colorful, mixed media narratives, for which she is so well known, to the elegant, monochromatic, rhythmic forms and textures built of bone in this exhibition. Her bone sculptures use the materials of death to celebrate life. In Onofrio’s hands, material is meaning and requires a closer and deeper read. Her meticulous investigation into form is also about the essence of rebirth, growth and the beauty within our grasp. The power of her work, ambition of scale and intimacy of emotion come together in perfect agreement in Unearth. The work of Judy Onofrio is found in over 30 museum collections around the world including The Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.; Arabia Museum, Helsinki, Finland; The Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; Cooper-Hewitt Museum, NY, NY; Frederick R. Weisman Museum, Minneapolis, MN.
