Chef Royce A native of the Austin neighborhood in Chicago Illinois, developed her passion for cooking over 25 years ago. It did not take long for those closest to her to realize her ability to turn traditional recipes into gourmet masterpieces infused with soul and an abundance of love. Chef Royce loved the idea of sharing her passion with others; so she began to deliver her lunches to loved ones at their jobs and local businesses. She delivered these delicious meals in a brown bag; Consequently, she became the Brown Bag Lady. The affectious term had a nice ring to it and sparked a blooming business: The Brown Bag Lady Catering Company served the entire Chicagoland area for 8 years, including staple businesses in the Austin area, such as churches, beauty and barber shops, The Austin Chamber of Commerce, local banks, and political offices. After that, Chef Royce opened her first location: An American soul food restaurant in the Austin area - The restaurant, Soule (which was located at 5461 W Division) was popular amongst the community as well as outside of the community. With the success of her very first restaurant (in the late 90's to early 2000) Chef sought opportunities to grow her passion and skill.

Since opening her very first restaurant, Chef Royce has gone on to open other businesses, including a restaurant and nightclub which was the very first black owned liquor establishment in the city of Berwyn, a very lucrative soul food restaurant in central Illinois, and the beloved Kiss My Dish Soul Kitchen in Oswego, Illinois.

Chef Royce has made her culinary mark in other ways as well. She launched a popular Facebook “Live” cooking show, that provided tips to viewers on how to turn their everyday dishes into memorable meals. Chef Royce has also had the pleasure of training chefs that have gone on to open their own restaurants and become private chefs for celebrities, amongst other endeavors.

In each of these endeavors, Chef Royce has been graced with the opportunity to serve food to people from all over the globe. People from all walks of life have all agreed that the food is exceptional. Some of the public reviews left by customers boast that Chef Royce’s food is, “incredible”, “exceptional”, “heaven sent”, “the best ever’, and “phenomenal”. Chef Royce also believes in serving food in the way that she would serve her family.

What if I told you the plan that you have for yourself is too small?

It’s too limiting! God said BIGGER! If you asked me 3 years ago, I would have never told you that I would be a Financial Broker and definitely not a successful one. I was entirely too busy building my own entertainment company & working as a Marketing Consultant. I was so deep into my plan that nothing could have shifted my focus but God himself. During that time, my best friend approached me about building a financial services business with her. I replied, “no, thank you” because I thought it would be a distraction. On top of that, I knew absolutely nothing about finance. She then asked if I would simply get licensed to support her along her journey? I agreed to do that and knocked it out right away.

I completed a 20 hour course in 2 days. On day 3, I took the exam and became licensed through the state of Illinois. Although I had the Life Producer license, I never used it and honestly, never intended to use it. 9 months later, the covid-19 pandemic struck and just like that, the government completely took me out of business which caused my income to come to an immediate halt. As a married mother of 3, I couldn't wait for a $600 stimulus check so it was then that I decided to give my license a try.

Within 3 hours, I made $1,600 dollars (via zoom) and that was all that I needed to see to get started as an agent.

I took off from there: Year 1: Made $80,000 on a parttime basis.

Year 2: Became a full-service Financial Broker Year 3: Opened my own branch office.

You see, I almost let my one track mind keep me from multiple streams of income. I nearly let having no background in finance make me feel like the role wasn't for me. I was very close to allowing my passion to keep me from a phenomenal way to fund my passion.

The moral to the story is this ... if your ultimate goal is financial freedom, be open to the many ways that will lead to financial freedom, especially the ways that will get you there faster! Don’t be so fixated on one way that you completely ignore an opportunity that can speed up your ultimate goal by 20 years. It is baffling to me that the opportunity I had been avoiding for months was the very opportunity that completely changed my family’s life and has me on track to retire by the age of 45.

With that being said, I am excited to pay it forward. I take pleasure in showing others how to obtain the highest paid licenses in the country and build a big business/generate passive income using them. On average, my agents make about $500 an hour so it not only buys their time back but allows them to keep the safety and security of their full-time job. Many of us have the drive to do great things, but are missing 2 vital components; the right mentor and the right vehicle. I am here to bridge that gap.

After 7 years, Shabazz was broke, burned out, and emotionally drained, causing her to make the difficult decision to reevaluate her path. Returning to the corporate world for 90 days, she absorbed valuable insights that would later shape her approach to entrepreneurship. She also knew from her work with BRIJ that her business wasn't the only one facing significant hurdles; many Black-owned businesses were struggling. This realization sparked a fire within her to create meaningful change, not just within her own enterprise, but for small businesses that were marginalized. After a few months, her entrepreneurial spirit reignited, and she embarked on her most ambitious venture yet—Qui Virtual Support Solutions, a haven for high-quality Virtual Associates that support entrepreneus and executiveswith their backoffice operations.

Armed with the hard-earned lessons from her previous ventures, she approached Qui with newfound clarity.

Q: What inspired you to start your business: A: Honestly, it was a tragedy that led to the start of my business. MsPsGFree Inc. emerged as a tribute to my late mother and a symbol of resilience and dedication. I never knew my maternal grandmother since she passed away when I was a toddler. My mother passed away at the age of 60, my dad passed at 42, and in 2018, I lost my middle sister Venita to a heart attack, she was 51. I feel called and equipped to change the trajectory of our family, to begin to raise entrepreneurs, build confidence and to create generational wealth for our future. I want to see my grandchildren's children.

These devastating losses were a personal health awakening for me and also a pivotal revelation.

After visiting the doctor to review my own health issues which included acid reflux and digestive woes, I embarked on a journey to eliminate fruits, vegetables, and dairy from my diet. This unexpected dietary shift spurred curiosity and led me to a training session, where a fellow classmate introduced me to the concept of gluten-free living.

It was uncharted territory and a notion that was alien to me until then. It was so hard to find gluten-free snack options that I liked - that actually tasted good to me. So I took matters into my own hands. I meticulously refined recipes, adapting them to the gluten-free paradigm, and our inaugural creation, the Cookie Bar, was born. They became so popular with my colleagues at the federal prison they started referring to them as "crack" bars, because they were addictive.

Today, our focus is a combination of delectable granola offerings, each brimming with organic ingredients designed to fuel, nourish, and invigorate. Our journey is to encourage and support clean and healthy living – an embodiment of our commitment to fostering vitality, movement, and longevity.

Q: What has been your biggest obstacle?

A: Being a first-generation entrepreneur is a journey I stumbled into. It was uncharted waters for sure. I had very little knowledge of how to move a business from an idea, to a concept, to a product. I needed to learn all of the aspects of business development from retail, certifications, moneymanagement, marketing, cash flow to budgeting. It has been nothing short of a miracle that has allowed me and MsPsGFree Inc to grow to where we are today. Our biggest obstacle to date is raising capital. We’re growing into more retail spaces. We went from having products in one Whole Foods Market to three, then to fifteen and now we are in all the Chicagoland locations. We recently secured placement in all Chicagoland Mariano’s locations as well. We are selling more products, online on our ecommerce site, Amazon and conducting live vendor events that include in-store demonstrations.

Q: How does your company's presence resonate with its customers and impact their lives?

A: Our mission is to provide delicious, nutritious, and healthy Granola which promotes movement and longevity. MsP’s contains no added processed sugars, is sweetened with honey and organic liquid stevia. We also utilize organic gluten-free oats (glyphosate free), organic flax and chia, organic spices, as well as organic coconut oil. That means our products are delicious, heart healthy and keeps you full and satisfied all at the same time. We make our products in our commercial kitchen facility by hand in small batches. Our goal is to be the go-to brand for healthy snacks. We want to assist and cheer on our customers and consumers as they make better choices for their lives that begin with what they decide to snack on. Food is such an important aspect of our lives and we want to be that guide as people discover what is possible for our health, life and family to improve daily by our eating and snacking choices.

Q: What’s your favorite part of business ownership?

A: The hard work that we’ve put in over the last seven years is finally gaining some momentum. It feels good to see progress and to check off some goals that were made. We’ve been blessed to receive a number of awards and grants including but not limited to the 2022 Lightbox Grant from The Maclyn Group, 2022 BMO Winning Women Grant, 2023 Nextdoor Kind Foundation – Keep it local grant, and we’re one of the small businesses to receive a portion of the 2023 BeyGOOD Foundation Grant.

Q: Trying new things especially snacks can be met with hesitation. How do you encourage people to try glutenfree granola?

A: Most initial hesitation is centered solely around taste.

MsP’s gluten-free granola is not your average hard scratchy tasteless granola chalked full of sugar. We offer moist, delicious, flavorful granola that is good to you and good for you. Our products have no added processed sugars, no genetically modified ingredients, natural sweeteners, and many organic good-for-you ingredients. Q: Tell us about your products A: MsPsGFree snack foods are hand-made, in our commercial kitchen in Shorewood, IL. She served as an Associate Minister under the leadership of Pastor Caliph C. Wyatt, Jr. who recently retired. She now serves under the leadership of Pastor LeAundre Hill. She currently teaches Adult Sunday school and is part of the Media Ministry. She acknowledged her call to the preaching ministry in 2000 and received her license to preach following her first sermon in 2002.
