Letter from the Rectory………... What a glorious start to Springtime we’re having! As I sit down in mid-March to write this I look out of the window and the bright, white light of snow is reflected back at me – a blanket appeared overnight, accompanied by a zero-degree temperature and a bitterly cold wind…we can only live in hope that a thaw will set in just as quickly I suppose. It seems the Candlemas prediction back in February that warned of a further six weeks of winter due to a shadow being cast on 2nd day of the month has come to pass. Things can only get better as the nights grow shorter and the days grow longer! Meanwhile, Lent draws to a close with the beginning of Passiontide, we look towards to Palm Sunday, Holy Week and Easter on the horizon. Our Easter Day service on 1st April this year will be at St Laud’s, Sherington, at 10.30am ( normally the ‘something different’ slot ) and we will be celebrating Christ’s glorious Resurrection together with great Joy and Thanksgiving. As well as the tradition of the Flowering of the Cross, after the service there will be an Easter Egg hunt for the children to take part in, and the usual tea, coffee and cake for all to share. Easter Day is the highpoint of the Church year, and Christians all across the world will be celebrating the New Light and Life of the Risen Jesus and His victory over the darkness of death. This extraordinary event represents the fulfilment of God’s promise of Hope and Life to ALL people through the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, his Son. If you’ve been thinking of coming to any of our church services for a while but not yet managed to do so I urge you to come along on Easter Day – it’s one of the happiest occasions in the Church calendar! By the time this issue of SCAN comes to print, St Laud’s, St Lawrence and St Firmin’s will each have hosted at least one evening Compline in turn during Holy Week. This service is traditionally the last monastic Office of the day, attended just before retiring to bed. It is quite short, and includes the plainsong Office Hymn sung quietly and unaccompanied. At the end, the candles are snuffed and people leave in silence as the church settles back into the darkness of night and sleep. Deadline for May – 18th April
Compline can be said or sung throughout the year and is often taken by lay members of the church rather than ordained ministers. Remember, the church Buildings in SCAN Parish belong to the whole community, not just the members of the individual congregations who worship in them each week. They represent the Spiritual heart of each village, and through keeping the buildings watertight, warm and welcoming we hope to protect and conserve them so that future generations can fully USE them and come to experience Peace, Hope, Joy and Solace within their walls. To that end we are so fortunate to have some very able and active fundraisers in the form of ‘Friends of St. Firmins’ and ‘Friends of St. Laud’s’ in North Crawley and Sherington respectively. The members are raising money towards cost of the upkeep of the fabric of both churches through donations, annual subscriptions and regular social events throughout the year. Do look out for flyers and notices advertising dates and details. With regard to St Laud’s, we are hoping to make the current children’s area at the rear of the church a bit more ‘user friendly’. With a few basic additions some great improvements could be implemented, one of which includes putting a heavy curtain across the north door to exclude some of the biting draught and help make the corner more cosy to inhabit! So, if anyone out there is refurbishing a very large window or door(s) which might include replacing curtains, we could potentially offer them a very good home. I haven’t yet measured the dimensions but at least 120” drop and 84” width would be needed……….well its worth asking, who knows! STWOOD
By the time you read this the “Beast from the East” will be a distant memory. There was some scoffing beforehand about a little snow but for once the weather forecast was right and Astwood, Turvey Road, Cranfield Road and Hardmead were snowed in although the A422 was open due to gritting. At 6am Friday morning Turvey Road had three cars stuck (all 4x4s). With the help of tractors (one got stuck) from The Grange and the help of friends one little boy was able to get away on his first school trip to Jersey. This was one of many stories of the local community pulling together with at least 30 cars and a snow plough being dug out by local residents. Papers from Cranfield were unable to get through until the Monday. Those of us left behind fed our animals and walked down the snow drifted road to The Old Swan to find the pub full to bursting with young families and Phil and Clare and their team welcoming all to hot food (and even a large bag of carrots for ponies). It was lovely to see Bob our old landlord there as well. Vicky Frossell would like to thank all those who offered her help with shopping etc.

On 1st April the Astwood Easter Egg Hunt will have taken place and we hope to see photos next month. The next events to look forward to include a MacMillan coffee morning on Sunday 15th April at 10:30 in the village hall. All welcome Astwood is also going to enter the Best Kept Village Competition by the end of April, and we´d love to get everybody´s support. Everyone can participate by just making sure the village is well looked after and neat and orderly and the village hall committee are already working hard on The Green. We´ll be judged some time between 1st June and 15th July. We are also looking forward to the Astwood Summer Village Event, Sunday 10th June, 1pm on Astwood village green (by the Old Swan) and a date has already been set for the Astwood Harvest supper which is Monday 15th October 2018. Daffodils are flowering in the gardens and roadside verges to brighten the days but as I write winter is still clinging on with a light covering of snow. This might all change to give a warm Easter, which you will know when reading this The Lent lunch in Chicheley was very popular with around fifty people enjoying the food and company. Thank you to all who made it happen. I mentioned last month about feeding the birds at this time of the year as food is in short supply for them. I then read that some “experts” said we shouldn’t do that as it encourages species that don’t normally mix to do so at the feeders thus spreading the risk of disease. However as from past experience whenever an expert gives an opinion it is usually refuted by another expert I guess we should just make up our own minds. A Parish Meeting will be held on Thursday 12th April at 8.00 pm in the village hall. A supper to celebrate St. George’s day will be held on Saturday 21st April in the village hall. The timing is 7.00 pm for a 7.30 pm start. To book your place please call me on 01234 391371. Chichchat will continue to be held in the village hall on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays from 10.30 am until noon. ORTH CRAWLEY NEWS AND COMMENT
Well what a lot of snow we have had and combined with the low temperatures it caused quite a bit of chaos. However, I’m told by those that have lived in these here parts for many a year more than me, that it’s been much worse in the past. Now the tales from some of my elders in the village, who were probably told tales by their elders could feasibly go back to the mini ice-age which ended circa early nineteenth century when the Thames froze over for weeks on end, so I just can’t compete with them on bad weather stories. From what I have seen on social media though there have been some spectacular snow formations especially down Pound Lane. Also, there were quite deep snow drifts towards the Cranfield end of Folly lane and a number of cars and drivers had to be rescued. All in all, it didn’t last too long, and I’m sure a lot of big and small children enjoyed the novelty of it, building snowmen and possibly throwing the odd snowball, in a ‘PC’ and fun manner of course. Now the thaw is complete, all of the many and varied footpaths will be revealed for the general public to use for perambulation. I feel the need to keep banging on about the footpaths, especially in the further reaches of the parish, as they really don’t get walked on a regular enough basis, and when there is no evidence of the paths being used, over time they will not be marked out, and over more time will disappear and the knowledge of where they are will be lost. Now there are some village people who do organize the odd walk, which is great, it just needs more to follow this example and explore the countryside. I am going to try and get the Parish Council to put some pressure on MKC to produce some guides of the local footpaths which I know they have but seem reluctant to produce. Also, when the weather improves, feel I need to pass on some of my knowledge of the paths before my hips and knees give out completely, so if you are interested please contact me and maybe we can jointly arrange some walking dates when the sun is out and the temperature has risen. For some reason there appears to be a complete misapprehension that what comes out of dogs on their daily walks through the recreation ground and further afield, is something I can influence. Do feel that if there is a problem, that all the very good law abiding and socially conscious dog walkers should keep an eye open for those who seem to lack a sense of community and are ignorant of the damage that can be caused to small children, who due to being nearer the ground than the rest of us can catch a disease from dog mess that in some cases causes severe eye problems. Some years back the Parish Council got the dog warden out with the threat of fining people falling foul of the law, and this did improve things for a while, but no-one really wants to resort to these measures again, as it should be easier and less messy for everyone to behave in an acceptable manner. Be warned though that our local Community police officer is aware of the situation, and is often in the village when you least expect it.

On Saturday 3 March the ‘Neighbourhood Plan’ Steering Group held an event in the Institute to display their latest findings and explain the status of the project. Despite the inclement weather it was decided to go ahead and this resulted in approximately 100 people turning up on the day, including David Hoskins one of our Milton Keynes Councillors, who commented on the good turnout and the manner in which the information was displayed. The village questionnaire is the driving force behind the project and all of the comments received from residents were available to read, plus all the statistics and information captured during the questionnaire phase were on display. Under the guidance of a professional planning consultant a number of areas have been identified as potential development sites and assessed against key planning criteria. The pluses and minuses in each case were then evaluated and the results shown at the event. A housing needs assessment for the village and other information relating to the process being followed were also clearly demonstrated. The first draft of the planning document is scheduled for submission to MKC this summer. Cricket Club. A wine tasting event is taking place in the Institute clubroom on 6 April, hosted by the cricket club. The cost is £25 per couple and includes some supper consisting of cheese, nibbles etc. The wines are selected and presented by a couple of wine experts, who have entertained us with their knowledge and expertise over many years, and there is always a theme such as comparing new world wines with French classics. You don’t need to be a cricket club member so all are welcome to join in the fun, but places must be booked in advance as numbers are limited. Arlene Ormston reported that the number of burglaries in the villages had calmed down. She was still organising a van for Folly Lane to catch speeding motorists. A resident commented that there was an increase in cars being parked on the kerb and on the bend in Hackett Place causing a safety issue. Arlene Ormston said that number 101 should be phoned to report these situations at the time they occurred and someone would come out to contact the owners to move the vehicles. It was also possible for a photo to be taken of the offending vehicle(s) and for this to be emailed to her. Finance Matters This month the value of receipts totalled £711.00 and the value of payments totalled £870.83 Parish Council documents: It was agreed that the Parish Council Standing Orders, Financial Regulations and Risk Assessment documents would be approved and adopted. They will be reviewed annually. Churchyard matters: The late Patricia Gladys Joyce – Interment fee and Exclusive Right of Burial fee received. Exclusive Right of Burial certificate number 192 for Garden of Rest Plot 2/22 was signed. Residential Safety: Highways: Potholes were becoming a serious hazard, particularly in the High Street. It was agreed that these would be reported. Community Speedwatch: An email had been received from MKC which had been circulated to all parish councillors about a scheme where communities could work with Thames Valley Police and be actively involved in managing speed in their area. It was agreed to ask someone to come out to a meeting to explain the initiative in more detail. Landscape: Cllr Maclennan reported that she had received two quotes for the replacement of the fence at the recreation ground. It was agreed to obtain a third quotation before making a decision. Questions/Comments from Residents Ditch: It was reported that the ditch which had been filled in with spoil from the construction work at 47 High Street had been cleared very speedily by MKC. Display boards for Open Day: Cllr Maclennan, as the IMC representative, agreed to request at the next meeting that the boards (owned by the Parish Council) were stored in the Institute. Parish Walk leaflet: Cllr Sandall agreed to try to find out whether it was possible to re-print the North Crawley Parish Paths leaflet which was originally produced by Bucks County Council through the Parish Paths Partnership. Dog mess: It was reported that this had become a problem on the recreation ground again and also on some of the footpaths. It was agreed that another note would be put into Scan about this. MK Play Association: It was suggested that the possibility of providing some play sessions during the Summer could be considered. Cllr Magee agreed to follow this up. ROTARY CLUB OF NEWPORT PAGNELL This article is being written in mid-March after a period of very cold weather in Newport Pagnell and surrounding towns and villages. The temperature has now risen and the spring flowers have started appearing in abundance. Among them are the purple crocuses planted by Rotary in Newport Pagnell, and wherever there is a Rotary Club in the UK. There is a large display brightening the late winter gloom near the Fire Station opposite the Station Road car park Rotary plants crocuses globally in its Purple4Polio promotion to raise awareness of its 30year campaign to eradicate the terrible disease polio. At the start of Rotary’s campaign in 1985 there were 400,000 new cases reported every year. After major fund raising for mass immunisations, the number of new cases per year had decreased to 37 in 2016. Polio remains endemic in only Pakistan and Afghanistan, with northern Nigeria having no new cases but remaining on the watch list. As polio is contagious it must be eliminated completely in the same way as smallpox. A single case could spread the disease. Rotary’s support for polio eradication will continue until the disease is finally eliminated as a threat. The numbers have been crunched for various Rotary fund-raising events over the last few months. The bucket collections at Frosts Garden Centre, Newport Pagnell and Olney before Christmas raised £2,200 for Willen Hospice. The Frugal Lunch in Sherington in January raised over £400, of which £100 has been given to a Parkinson’s Disease charity. Our annual dinner in February at the Jaipur Restaurant, Milton Keynes raised over £3,300 for the Rotary Jaipur Limb Project. This Project provides low cost prosthetics for amputees in developing countries, enabling them to continue working, retain their independence, and support their families. The Jaipur Dinner was a sell-out with around 230 guests. We were treated to superb entertainment by renowned local soprano Emily Haigh. The Satellite Rotary Club of Woburn Sands and District, initiated by the Rotary Club of Newport Pagnell, goes from strength to strength, and another new member was inducted recently. Our Club received a fascinating talk by one of our new members on his former working life. Another recent talk covered infamous murderers of the late 19th and early 20th Century, and similarities between the perpetrators. We wondered if modern crimefighting profilers would have recognised these common factors. One of our members who is a skilled engineer and handyman has taken on the challenge of restoring the historic “milepost” from the A509 between Newport Pagnell and Junction 14. Our Club will hold its annual Cheese & Wine evening at Lavendon Village Hall in April. Plans are well in hand for our annual Plant Sale that will take place in Olney Market Square on 4th May. SHERINGTON LIFE…..
It’s STILL snowing as we write this, the very heavy snowfalls in March did bring out the Good Samaritan in many, digging cars out of drifts, gritting pathways and generally keeping an eye on each other. There was a spate of celebrity deaths at the end of March with Professor Stephen Hawking, Sir Ken Dodd and Jim Bowen all shuffling off this mortal coil. All three memorable in their own way – we think the prize for best last laugh goes to Doddy, getting married 2 days before he passed away possibly preventing HMRC from receiving tax from his estate (although we couldn’t possibly comment!) The White Hart renovation is going well – on target to have the kitchen open in May. During the renovation works the builders unearthed a secret passageway leading down to the church. This had been mentioned in some old documents found in the basement of the pub but until now no evidence had been seen. Parts of the passageway have fallen in and Giles Fern said there were no plans to open it up to church going beer drinkers but it gives a bit more storage for the kegs. The Twinning Quiz went really well despite it being a treacherous Friday with heavy snow, but this didn’t prevent the quizmaster or the fish and chips arriving. The village hall was packed with teams, there was a bit of controversy over the Periodic Table (but am prepared to let it go) until the winner’s laurels went to By Ourselves. Thanks to Donald and the Committee for their organisation of this now well established annual event. Another well-established annual event, The White Hart Beer Festival is on over the first Bank Holiday weekend in May. There will be the usual entertainment during Saturday – the Danglers are reported to be practicing a routine along the lines of the “Full Monty” which should be exciting. Family day on Sunday with the festival closing by Monday afternoon. Deadline for May – 18th April
Families with children (or childish adults) – hooray, the Playbus is coming back to Sherington from 12th April to July, term time only 35pm in the park – this is funded by the Parish Council so fill your boots! Stop press, we have heard that as part of the planning permission for the new housing development each house will be painted a different colour, resembling our very own Balamory. Enjoy April Fools Day and don’t believe everything you read! See you in May.

Obituary for Elizabeth Madge Hine Elizabeth Madge Hine (known to all as Madge) aged 85, passed away on Wednesday March 14th at the Airedale Nursing Home in Bedford, England, where she had lived for the last three years. Madge was born in Victoria, British Columbia on July 18, 1932 to Allan and Nancy Pendray. As a youngster Madge was an accomplished horsewoman, winning many competitions (some against international competition) on her horse, Rex. She attended Oak Bay High School and UBC and then spent a year travelling in Europe in 1955. During that time she met her future husband, Jeremy Hine, an Englishman, whom she married in 1957. Madge and Jeremy settled first in Colchester, England before moving back to Victoria in 1959 with their eldest son, Mark. They went on to have a further three sons, Terence, Robin and Phillip, before returning to the UK in 1975 and settling at The Old Rectory in Sherington where they lived for the next 35 years. Madge kept a holiday home (known to all as “Camp”) near Victoria, Canada, which her father built in 1934, and she visited whenever she could. The house was the scene for many happy family holidays spent crabbing, swimming and boating in the waters around the area. Madge was a wonderful home-maker, terrific cook, highly accomplished bridge player and an all-round kind person. You may remember her roaming the country-side delivering “Meals on Wheels” for many years in the old Morris Miner – quite often to people younger than herself! Madge enjoyed the village life from taking part in the husband and wife wheel-barrow races to hosting the village choir on many occasions when they were “Christmas Caroling”. The older members will remember the village fete being held at the Old Rectory several times where Madge would help with all the food and teas. Whilst very keen on “vegetables from the garden” Madge was equally keen on keeping fowl. Some may recall her walking around the village with the dogs, and a pair of geese waddling on behind her! She was also a proud grandmother to 11 grandchildren. Madge will be cremated and her ashes spread in the waters off the beach at Camp.

Alternative storage and possible project for new clerk to be investigated. 6.3 Keep Britain tidy round 2-4th March is now over, Cllrs agreed a litter pick to coinside with the next round would be worthwhile. 6.4 Playbus confirmed for the coming year, starting 12th April and running Thursdays for 2.5 hours 6.5 Cllrs and members of public agreed that the recent fly tipping at the top of Bedford Road was alarming but were pleased that MKCs Report it service collected the rubbish within the allocated 7 day target window. 7. PROJECT GROUP UPDATES 7.1 Pavilion 7.1.1 Cllr Selvey outlined the three quotes for remedial works to the Pavilion car MS park and drainage system received and recommended the quotation from Reef construction based on a thorough quotation process and theirs being the most

RECEIVE PUBLIC COMMENTS Keith Carey advised that recent aggressive behaviour by Gladman developments in local areas was a good example of why the PC must keep the neighbourhood plan AT up to date and frequently reviewed. Cllrs agreed that a wash-up meeting of the steering group should be called to discuss and a NP review would be added to the annual calendar 14. COUNCILLORS ITEMS Cllr Selvey mentioned that after the recent twinning event at the village hall, organisers had to take all the waste produced away from site themselves. Cllr AT Thatcher advised it was due to the classification of commercial waste and will query with MKC to see how they handle such scenarios. Cllr Shaw asked what the state of play was regarding the new village entrance RJ signs on gun lane/Bedford road and possible movement of the 30mph signs. Given that the Bedford Road planning application has been withdrawn, cllrs agreed now was a good time to pursue this again. Cllr Selvey highlighted major concerns that parking on the top of Crofts End (where it meets Bedford Rd) was becoming dangerous and need to look at whether we can get yellow lines introduced to restrict parking on and just down from the bend. Many of the attending public agreed this was a great concern. Cllr Johnstone to get in touch with previous contacts. 15. DATE OF NEXT MEETING The next Parish Council meeting will be held at the Sherington Pavilion on Tuesday 3rd April at 7.30pm. There being no further business the meeting ended at 2030hrs.

The New Thursday Group meets in Sherington Village Hall on the first Thursday of each month at 8.00 pm, unless otherwise indicated. It is open to all ladies from the village and surrounding area and new members are always very welcome.
