The Graycliff Estate, designed by renowned American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, is a masterpiece of his mid-career Organic Style. Martin, the wife of industrialist Darwin D. Martin. Designed between 1926 and 1931 as the summer estate of the Martin family (for whom Wright also designed a city residence, in Buffalo, NY) Graycliff is an easy drive from the western part of Route I-86, in Derby, NY. Although reservations are required, there are several tours daily during the summer and autumn, and several different types of tours as well. For those familiar with Wright’s other designs of this period (notably Fallingwater, in Pennsylvania) many of Wright’s design innovations are first seen at Graycliff---water features, including a fountain and pond; graceful terraces and cantilevered balconies, ribbons of windows that allow views of both lake and landscape; and perhaps most significant (and revolutionary for its time), a house that is actually transparent, allowing views through a building to Lake Erie beyond. Wright designed Graycliff for Isabelle R. Martin and her husband Darwin, intending to provide a spirit of “repose.” In this, he succeeded, for the tranquility of the setting, coupled with the breathtaking architecture create a sense of utter relaxation Enjoy great architecture amidst the beauty of nature at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Graycliff. The Jamestown Street Railway Co. The lack of a solid road-surfacing material left the byways of town and country muddy and slippery, and consequently, dangerous to pedestrians. The City of Jamestown partially rectified the problem by incorporating the Jamestown Street Railway Co. in 1884. The railway company used horse-drawn trolleys to carry its customers around the city, which served to keep the feet of citizenry dry at least until they arrived at the trolley stop. The horse-drawn trolleys were in service until 1891, when the City put in electric trolley lines. Horse power gradually gave way as electrically driven cars gained popularity. Better roads for automobiles and the arrival of a newcomer on the transportation scene called the bus forced the end of the Jamestown Street Railway Co. in 1938. Local historians are leading efforts to restore one of the old trolley cars, recently discovered in the woods near Jamestown in service as a storage shed. Reference: jamestowntrolley.org

TRAVEL TIPS Keep on top of your car's fuel level. Play it safe when gassing up the car. On rural roads or stretches of country with which you are unfamiliar, you never know how far away filling stations might be from one another. That means you should take the opportunity to top off the gas tank whenever you get the chance. This way you always will be confident you have enough gas to get to the next station. Don't risk coasting into your destination on fumes, unless you want to arrive at your destination hitched to a tow truck.

Take time to Dine & Drive in the Allegheny National Forest Region Take a side trip from Interstate 86 and enjoy a “Dine & Drive Fall Tour” through the Allegheny National Forest Region. The Allegheny National Forest is the only national forest in Pennsylvania. Exit 23 from I -86 is actually a gateway to beautiful views, meandering drives and great food. From this exit follow Route 219 south into Bradford. A blanket of color including yellow, crimson and orange dot the magnificent hills of Pennsylvania. Prime “leaf peeping” in this part of the country is the last two weeks of September and the first two weeks of October. Stop by Burgers & BBQ at 1020 East Main St. for a fabulous American burger and homemade potato chips. After filling your stomach with goodies, walk a bit on the Crook Farm trail which takes you to the 1800s Crook Farm Homestead, which includes a schoolhouse, bank building, carpenter shop and farm. Call the Bradford Landmark Society at 814-362-3906 for a tour. Plan your visit on Aug. 27 and 28 when the Crook Farm Country Fair takes place with food and craft vendors on site along with a music festival which lasts the entire weekend. After visiting Crook Farm, travel Route 219 to the Zippo/Case Museum, which is located at 1932 Zippo Drive. The museum marries two American icons – the Zippo lighter and the Case knife. After seeing the displays, including an American flag made of Zippo lighters, stop by the store – the only place to find some truly unique items. Admission is free. Take a moment for a snack at the John Williams European Pastry Shop on 20 Mechanic Street. Enjoy the tastes of a European pastry shop while not leaving the states. Homemade breads, pastries, fudge and cookies are delight for anyone with a sweet tooth. Other places to dine in Bradford are Beefeaters, 27 Congress Street in Bradford, where the beef is sliced before your eyes, or the Corner Bar & Restaurant, 40-42 Mechanic Street, which has unbeatable wings
Now, you are ready for the long haul. Take Route 219 south until you reach Route 59 and travel towards the Allegheny Reservoir. Want to take a hike? The North Country National Scenic Trail is the longest trail in the Allegheny National Forest and is one of three National Scenic Trails in Pennsylvania. In this area, you can walk the Morrison Trail, which is a 5.3-mile loop that passes boulder fields and forgotten homesteads. The Rimrock Trail Loop is 8.3 miles that includes a fantastic overlook of the reservoir. Located nearby along Route 59, is Harrison’s Fire Grille, a great place to stop for a fish fry and a drink. At this point, you can also take a drive down the Longhouse Scenic Drive, which was named in USA Today as one of the 51 most scenic drives in the United States. The byway, which circles the Kinzua Creek arm of the Allegheny Reservoir, is a 27-mile loop. The Red Bridge Campground is on this byway along with great fishing opportunities. Part of the Longhouse Scenic Drive is Route 321 which follows the reservoir for a short distance and then begins to rise into the highlands through a beautiful forest of hardwoods and hemlock. The hillsides will look like a patchwork quilt of fall color. If you want to dine or sample some local wines exit the Longhouse Scenic Drive along the southern edge of the drive via Route 321 and visit Kane. Flickerwood Wine Cellars, 309 Flickerwood Road, invites you to stop, shop, taste and tour. Texas Hot Lunch features delicious souvlaki dinners and their famous “Texas Hot”. Using a recipe that dates back to 1914, this Texas Hot is a plump, juicy hot dog with a squirt of mustard, sprinkled with onions and smothered with their famous sauce. Protect your eyes. The weather and the position of the sun could change depending on where you are driving. If you wear glasses or contacts for driving, be sure you have them with you. Keep a few pairs of sunglasses in your car to shield your eyes from sun glare. An Old Fashioned Country Tour
If you like to ride on a twisty, curvy road or if you’re the sort who gets to the top of a hill and drinks in the gorgeous view, Allegany County is for you. The Allegany County Office of Tourism worked with motorists who trundled on back roads just for fun, bicyclists with strong thighs and lots of gears and leather-clad motorcyclist who enjoyed leaning into a curve then put together maps of 6 suggested tours. Enter any tour from any point or direction though the brochure gives written directions for the favored route. While you can jump on anywhere or turn 2 loops into a custom drive, my husband and I set out on “Oil County” intending to stay close to the trail with the occasional detour. We drove through Friendship to start South on Route 34. Before we got to cruising speed, we stopped at an old cemetery. We didn’t see a sign for the cemetery but found it tidy, clad with a flag surrounded by flowers. We searched out Babcocks, Coons, Wrights and Steenrods buried as long ago as 1822. We tried to read through the faded letters on stories for Anne and Tolcut. Anne’s stone read, “In Memory of Anne, consort of Tolcut Gold who departed this life February 15, 1827 aged 63 years four months.” It was the word “consort” that attracted attention. Was Anne his wife or his companion? Did the word favor one meaning over another in 1827? Anne didn’t have a last name on the stone. Then there was Tolcut Gold’s stone. Tolcut died in September 1836 but his stone also gives details. “Tolcot lived 77 years. He served his country during the revolution. He was a good citizen and an honest man and departed this life…” The rest of it was buried in dirt and lichen. Continuing south on Route 34 through Wirt, we passed a stone railroad support, fields, houses, cabins, fences, wildflowers, sheds, barns, an old wooden cistern, logging roads and then a pond. I asked Rick to go back to the pond so he stopped and turned around and parked about 2 feet from a very surprised blue heron. The bird accepted the car, the engine noise and our faces but when the camera came up for a shot that was over the line. The heron took a leap forward and pushed hard with impressive wings. We also detoured onto Route 5B to the Hilltop Lodge. In the early 1800s William A. Dusenbury built Hilltop as his private retreat using part of the fortune he accrued by establishing the First National Bank of Olean and by investing, like many others in the area, in lumber and oil. Hilltop Lodge now offers glamping – glamorous camping. The owner/chef is Richard Fontana who retired from law enforcement in Erie County and bought the Hilltop Lodge in the 1980s. Driving the long, narrow private road into the area prepares glampers for the wooded quiet of the cabins and lodge. Glampers can find all meals at the Lodge but the restaurant is open to the public Wednesday through Saturday nights with private parties any time. Richard calls the menu "upscale with my home cooked Italian meals." Leaving Hilltop Lodge we turned right and passed variety - elegant houses and rudimentary cabins, polished and proud homes and abandoned dwellings, boats and trucks, small bridges and miles of open fields alternating with extensive mowed lawns. Main Street in Bolivar hosts the Pioneer Oil Museum, closed when we passed. We found a variety of cemeteries and several million dollar views. The overlook at the top of the hill on Route 5 between Little Genesee and Obi had a chain across the path so we respected that. Sloppy Joe’s Deli in West Clarksville caught our eye. Well, more honestly the barn sale next to Sloppy Joe’s caught my eye but since we were in the parking lot, we went into Sloppy Joe’s. It’s a take-off-your-coat-and-put-on-your-slippers sort of place. The sign inside invites people to “Sit Long, Talk Much, Laugh Often. Joree Tavano, who runs Sloppy Joe’s with her husband Joe, said that their lives changed the day they hung that sign. The café is comfy with plastic tablecloths and filled chairs. That’s where we learned that the overlook on Route 5 is on private property mostly open by chance but always open on Easter Sunday for prayer services around the cross on the hill. Sloppy Joe’s (open from 7 am till 8 pm) serves pizza, subs, wings and friendship. Fridays are for fish fries but Tuesdays are reserved for spaghetti, wings and - for the last 14 years - an open mic so head over with your guitar. It’s such a special place that after one of the regulars, Jim Holcomb, died his wife Debbie brought his farm boots in and put them among the collectables on display. Ray Baker studied his coffee mug and said he’d been in the place so many times he couldn’t count that high. He said they all missed Jim and then said, “I buried my wife yesterday but I’m right back here again. It’s a big family here, you know. You get attached. You feel camaraderie and solace.” That makes Sloppy Joe’s an Allegany County gem. By this time, Rick and I were near the end of Oil Country but we detoured again when we saw some odd signs labeled Mt. Irenaeus. Following the arrows up some dirt "roads" we discovered a retreat and home to Franciscan Monks, loosely tied to St. Bonaventure. Mt. Irenaeus occasionally welcomes guests for Sunday Eucharist (followed by a dish to pass meal). The area is not handicapped accessible and it’s best to call 716-375-2096 before venturing up the mountain. With all of our side trips and the occasional wrong turn the round trip from our Wellsville home through Oil Country covered 73 laid-back miles.
