The Answers Always Lived Within Me I was lying on the floor with my head two inches away from the coffee table. A foot was coming in the direction of my face. I quickly rolled and the foot hit the floor. “Jesus” I yelled and I heard the footsteps fading. “Jesus can’t help you”. His foul voice yelled from the kitchen. “He did” I answered. “Your foot is not in my face”. I say under my breath. I bowed my head and said a little prayer. “God please end this madness, I can’t take this no more.” This was not the worst of what I’ve endured in abusive relationships. I’ve been abused all my life and this was a cake walk but at this point I’m tired. I think of Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, “Declares the LORD” plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future… As my abuser walks out the front door and slams it, I take some time to reflect on my life and my relationships. I know I have to stop worrying about what’s wrong with my abusers and focus on what’s wrong with me if I want God’s promise. So here it is and raw as I can give it. I lived in the myth of romantic love; However: Because of my unpleasant, traumatizing experiences in relationships, I perceive the world outside of myself as irredeemable, dangerous, hostile, confusing, and uncaring. I felt lacking and insecure so my love became dependency. In my desperation to form and preserve attachments, I threw honesty to the wind. I clung to worn out relationships when I should have given them up. Most important I lacked a sense of responsibility for myself. I passively looked to others as the source of my happiness and fulfillment, consequently I was endlessly angry, because I always felt let down by others. Still I would cling to relationships with a desperation that led to unloving, manipulative behavior that destroyed the very relationship I tried to preserve. I was always on my knees begging people not to leave me. Beat me! I won’t tell. My dependency appeared to be love because it was a force that caused me to fiercely attach myself to another, but in all actuality it was not love, it was anti-love. I sought to receive rather than give. I worked to be trapped and constricted rather than liberated. After seeing all of my relationships destroyed, I shifted my mind set and became evasive, elusive and uncaring needless to say, that didn’t work in my relationships either. I hear all the time the truth shall set you free. I came to the Shelter Home bearing the gift of the truth hoping it would set me free. My God, I want to be free. -Anonymous, Blessed, Determined Survivor!

We would like to welcome one of our newest staff members, Delana McCroskey. She is a victim advocate who specializes in child advocacy. Some of her tasks include child intakes, risk assessments, individual educational plans, art therapy, planning and organizing special events for children, giving Speak Up/Be Safe presentations at schools in the area, and just the safety/well being of the children. When asked what she hopes to accomplish in her new position, she states, “I hope to help each individual child understand that what has happened to them (the abuse) is not their fault. I hope to instill in the children that they can do anything they set their mind to. I hope to help each child realize they are important and their life matters. I hope by the end of their stay at the shelter they are able to look back and see their growth compared to when they arrived at the shelter. I want to keep children from slipping through the cracks and assist them in reaching their goals. Delana is a native of Caldwell County, a West Caldwell graduate, a 2014 graduate of Western Carolina University, and a welcome addition to the Advocacy team at the Shelter Home. She plans to enter the Masters of Social Work program at Appalachian State this fall.

Delana, Welcome Aboard

Introducing…... Tammy Watts

has joined the Shelter Home staff as a Shelter Manager part-time. Tammy is a resident of Catawba County and is involved in the youth ministry with her church, New Hope Baptist in Vale, NC. When asked about her new position with the Shelter Home, she says, “I believe that in everything, there is a time and a season, and in this Season with the Shelter Home, I hope to accomplish everything that is laid before me, whether it's a listening ear, prayer, compassion, guidance etc. Whatever God has in his plan here for me at the Shelter Home, it is within my desire to see it accomplished.”

Marley

Lee

has joined the Shelter Home staff as a Shelter Manager for the Summer. Marley is a resident of Lenoir, a Hibriten High School Graduate and is currently attending Western Carolina University with a Criminal Justice focus.

Janice Bumgarner has become one of our most beloved and seasoned volunteers. She is always willing to do just about anything to help out. Janice first learned about the Shelter Home back in 1988 from her dear friend, Wilma Mikeal. Wilma was a longtime employee and volunteer with the Shelter Home for many years. On Monday nights, for 2 1/2 years, Janice volunteered to sit with the children, playing games, reading books and facilitating crafts. She would volunteer during the time the mother’s attended the Shelter Home’s weekly support group. Three years ago in February, Janice came back as a Shelter Home Volunteer. Due to medical issues, she’s only able to help in certain areas, but BOY does she! She has done everything from organizing closets, filing, hand making quilts, wrapping Christmas presents, putting together our “welcome baskets” and even finding items on sale to donate for our Wish List. When asked why she volunteers, she says, “I just enjoy helping out in any way I can. I love to see their smiles, it makes my day, and everyone is always so appreciative for everything.”

We want to extend a HUGE thank you to the Group Volunteers of: Hudson First Methodist Church, Mt. Herman Methodist, and Project Linus for continuing to provide a handmade quilt to each woman and child who enters the shelter. And to: Day 3 Church for donating their time to seed and plant our Vegetable garden this year. It is amazing how it has grown.
