Recycling Codes Recycle" Waste Hierarchy comprises the three elements, “Reduce”, “Reuse” and “Recycle” (also known as the Three ‘R’s). With times the stress on waste management has increased with others terms of recover, energy recovery included in the waste hierarchy. Reduce means to reduce consumption and the amount of waste generated. This includes buying and consuming less, as such also throwing away less. Reuse is simply the act of using an item again and again in its original form. Reusing

items eliminates the need to reprocess materials (whether it is for disposal, or for recycling). Recycling is processing used materials (waste) into new products to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduce energy usage, reduce air pollution (from incineration) and water pollution (from land filling) by reducing the need for "conventional" waste disposal, and lower greenhouse gas emissions as compared to virgin production.

In order to meet recyclers' needs while providing manufacturers a consistent, uniform system, a coding system is developed. The recycling code for plastics was introduced in 1988 by plastics industry through the Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. Because

municipal recycling programs traditionally have targeted packaging – primarily bottles and containers – the resin coding system offered a means of identifying the resin content of bottles and containers commonly found in the residential waste stream.

Type 1 - PET, PETE The acronym PETE (polyethylene terephthlate) or PET (poly ethylene terephthalate) are often used interchangeably, to refer to type 1 plastic. PET or PETE plastics are often used in soft

PVC are also made into blood bags and medical tubing.

HDPE plastic can be recycled into bottles for holding household chemicals such as detergent, shampoo, conditioner and even motor oil. Recycled HDPE plastic can also be made into pipes, buckets and bins, pens, flower pots, film and sheets, benches, and even dog houses.

Recycled PVC can be made into packaging, mud flaps, film and sheet, floor tiles and mats, resilient flooring, trays, electrical boxes, cables, traffic cones, garden hose.

drink bottles, as well as food and non-food containers, because of their good gas and moisture barrier properties.

PET and PETE plastic can be recycled into carpet yarns, fiber fill, tote bags, food and drink containers, luggage and clothing. Type 2 Plastic – HDPE The acronym HDPE (high density polyethylene) is often used to refer to type 2 plastic. HDPE plastic is often used to make bottles for beverages with short shelf life, such as milk and juice. Because HDPE has good chemical resistance, it is also often used for containing household and industrial chemicals such as detergents and bleach. HDPE is also used to manufacture grocery and retain bags.

Type 3 Plastic -- PVC The acronym PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride or Vinyl) is used to refer to type 3 plastic. There are two types of PVC plastic. Rigid PVC are made into bottles and packaging sheet, as well as pipes and fittings, carpet backing and windows in the construction market. Given its stable electrical properties, flexible PVC are used in wire and cable insulation. Given its excellent chemical resistance, flexible

Examples of PVC plastic recycling codes can be seen below.

Type 4 Plastic - LDPE The acronym LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene) is used to refer to type 4 plastic. Given its toughness, flexibility and relative transparency, LDPE plastic is often used in cable insulation, flexible bottles, as well as film applications. LDPE is also used extensively in manufacturing breadbags, tote bags, dry cleaning bags, furniture, carpets, and squeezable bottles. Examples of LDPE plastic recycling codes can be seen below. The “PE-LD” recycling codes are often used by plastic bag manufacturers.

plastic. Given its clear and hard properties, PS plastic is often used in protective packaging, such as CD covers or cases. PS plastic can also be foamed, to be made into Styrofoam which are in turn made into disposable plates and cups and take-away containers, etc.

Type 6 Plastic –PS

FACTS Recycling 1 plastic bottle not only saves anywhere from 100 to 1000 years in the landfill but also saves the environment from the emissions in producing new bottles as well as the oil used to produce that bottle.

For every 1 ton of plastic that is recycled we save the equivalent of 2 people’s energy use for 1 year, the amount of water used by 1 person in 2 month’s time and almost 2000 pounds of oil.

Today the most common products in cities recycling programs are paper products, cardboard, plastic, glass and aluminum.

Approximately 60% of our rubbish thrown away today could be recycled.

The acronym PS (Polystyrene) is used to refer to type 6

SAFETY AUDIT Safety audit is a statutory requirement under the Manufacture, Storage and Import of Hazardous Chemical, Rules (MSIHC) 1989 for upper layer of major accident hazard units. According to the provisions of the Rule-10 (4) of Manufacture Storage and Import of Hazardous Chemicals

The objectives of the safety audit would be to review & critically assess the existing safety programmes to prevent & control the hazards in the plant with a view to suggest improvement . The benefit of safety audit is to evaluate the quality & effectiveness of the safety programme, rather than only

quantitative measures of its failure.

SheelOffice -Web Most of the companies manage their Environment, Safety & Health data in Excel files. These data will be spanning across different files with no inter-linking and security. They are not easy to maintain and users may create different versions of the files for different purpose. Every time the users have to track the actions or make report, he has to open the file and revise the format, filter etc. This is a time consuming job in which a lot of productive time is lost. Data can’t be shared within organization and each sharing leaves room for discrepancies and error. Is it same, if you decide to use SheelOffice - Web. Not at all !!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Ÿ Data are active - Automatic notification on entry of new accidents and nearmiss. Ÿ Automatic notification to assignee on new assignment of CAPA, legislative requirements. How to send tabular report by Email In this section we will take an case where management has asked you to send the the list of accidents in last 3 months. The process can be completed in following steps: Ÿ Go to ‘Safety’ Tab and open the accidents list. (It shows all accidents). Ÿ Filter the data based on accident date Ÿ Go to ‘Action’ button and open download. It will show the following screen.

Using the SheelOffice - web will streamline the complete data management, analysis and reporting process with following benefits: Ÿ Data is shared as per authority across the organization. Ÿ Data are at centralized location and Everybody sees the same data and not different. Ÿ The analysis of data - sorting, filtering charting are easy and intuitive. Ÿ Tabular reports can be sent by email - It only require a click.

data management system you are using. Let’s take a typical example, next time you are asked to send the total accidents by complex in last 3 years. It will not be easy using Excel data management and may require 2 to 3 hours, But SheelOffice Web, it is simple. The process can be completed in following steps: ŸGo to ‘Safety’ Tab and open the accidents list. (It shows all accidents). ŸFilter the data based on accident date. ŸGroup the data based on ‘Complex’ Field. ŸGo to ‘Action’ button and open download. (as done in previous example) ŸClick Email (as done in previous example). Ÿ Enter the email address and subject and click Send.

This will send the filtered report to the Management. The data analysis is not limited to filter but sorting, grouping and group calculations. You may feel that is is easy (not so much as in SheelOffice -Web) in the present
