Rope Making One of the interesting and participatory “fun” activities at the American Thresherman’s Fall Festival show are the rope making demonstrations. Marilyn Brickhaus of Perryville, MO (originally from the Conant area), got started with an interest in rope making way back in 1978 when she was a young woman. Her collection started with a 1911 New Era rope maker that she inherited from her father, Ray Beck, in 1973. She has found two Rope making is a very popular attraction during the show more makers since then, a 1901 unnamed machine and a Wonder model, made in Canada that has no date; she is always on the look-out for another! Marilyn has done rope making demonstrations for all of the 27-years of the Fall Festival! She states that ropes were originally made from hemp and that when farmers used to gather for barn raisings, ropes were made to accommodate pulling the framed wall upright. Ropes were also used for halters, animal roping, hay ropes in barns and many other uses around the farm. Marilyn now uses sisal baler twine and will use yarn for the much younger kids so as not to
