Mercy Health - St. Rita’s Urology

by Nicole Davis

Meet Dr. Daniel Murtagh Jr., MD, a Urologist at Mercy St. Rita’s. Dr. Murtagh treats a wide variety of urological disorders such as: prostate diseases and voiding dysfunction, kidney stones, screening and treatment of urologic cancers, female urology - incontinence and pelvic prolapse, and men’s health - low testosterone and erectile dysfunction. His clinical interests include administering robotic-assisted surgery of kidneys, bladder, and prostate. Part of his practice at St. Rita’s Urology is also dedicated to medical education and he is involved with teaching residents. Dr. Murtagh is known for practicing compassionate medicine and tailoring his practice to the needs of each patient. One of his patients shared, “I trust Dr. Murtagh and believe he has my best interest in mind.”

Dr. Murtagh always had an interest in medicine but followed a path of trial and error before deciding to go to medical school. He began his journey by attending Miami University of Ohio for Architecture and then Business before ending up on the Pre-Med track with a degree in Zoology. After receiving a Bachelor of Science from Miami University, he then completed his master’s degree of Science and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Toledo. He then chose to stay in Toledo to obtain his medical degree for four years, and then continued for six years of training in Urology and Renal Transplantation at the University of Toledo Medical Center. Dr. Murtagh’s father was a urologist spanning 40 years. While completing a rotation in Urology in medical school Daniel found a good work/ life balance, the technology in the field was really cool, and he enjoyed urology and the relationships with patients as well, just like his dad.

Another lucky coincidence was meeting his future wife, Katelyn, during residency. She was a nurse that worked in the recovery room at Toledo Hospital and was perfectly described as Super Woman by her coworkers. After following his heart and “going for it,” Daniel and Katelyn are coming up on their five year wedding anniversary in October. They had a beautiful wedding ceremony in Toledo at the Toledo Country Club, situated on the Maumee River. Now, they share a busy and wonderful home life. They have three children, Jack and Henry, 3-year-old twins, and Nora who just turned two. Dr. Murtagh quickly goes from doctor to dad when he gets home. As a family, they like to visit the Florida Keys to go fishing, boating, and golfing.

Dr. Murtagh loves the world of Urology and his patients. One of the special parts about his job is that he works with great partners (Dr. Khan, Dr. Mostafa, and Dr. Buck) who he has known since grade school. They came together again during medical school and went through residency together. “It is very unique to work so closely with your partners,” he shared. Through daily talks and similar work ethics, they trust each other in both practice and judgement. Dr. Murtagh practices in Toledo and as of five years ago, Lima, Ohio as well. He and his partners were immediately impressed with what St. Rita’s had to offer with their state-of-the-art medical equipment and a mission to offer high quality care to patients. Thanks to the amazing staff and leadership at St. Rita’s, Dr. Murtagh and his partners have built the strongest and busiest Urology practice in the area.
