Students fare well after transferring Good grades being reported at NIU, ISU OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College graduates are faring well at Northern Illinois University and Illinois State University according to fall 2019 reports, board members learned March 12.

At Illinois State, the average grade point average for 168 IVCC transfers was 3.23, surpassing the 3.07 average for all 3,900 community college transfers and the 3.03 average for roughly 11,400 native students.

At Northern, the average GPA for 153 IVCC transfers was 3.19 compared to the 3.07 average for 6,600 community college transfers and the 2.90 average for more than 6,300 native students.

“The reports show our students continue to excel academically after transferring,” said Vice President for Student Services Mark Grzybowski.

In a campus update opening the meeting, Grzybowski said IVCC’s student body is getting younger.

“At the height of the enrollment bubble in fall 2010, the mean age was 25,” Grzybowski said. “In fall 2019 it was slightly less than 24.”

Also noteworthy, Grzybowski said, is increased “financial stressors” on students.

“Last fall, 72 percent of students filing the FAFSA were awarded Pell or MAP awards — both of which are primarily income-based,” he said.

In other business, the board approved:

• Inter mediate and advanced welding certificates in both GMAW (gas metal arc welding) and SMAW (shielded metal arc welding).

• The $608,000 bid of John’s Service and Sales of Oglesby for the Building F (Weeg Cultural Centre) air handling unit and Building J (Auto Shop) exhaust upgrades.

• The $267,750 bid for replacement of the gym bleachers by Carroll Seating Company of Elk Grove Village. The work will take place this summer.

• A campus office for Central Illinois Police Mobile Training Unit (MTU). MTU will lease an office in the Peter Miller Community Technology Center and have access to a classroom for training. “This arrangement will provide a safer campus and allow for unique experiences for criminal justice students,” said IVCC President Jerry Corcoran.

Lillian Rodrigues and Paxton Kennedy of Mendota are among more than 150 IVCC graduates now attending NIU. Rodrigues is carrying a 4.0 GPA and recently was accepted into the university’s nursing program. Kennedy is majoring in economics with a minor in business and carrying a 3.6 GPA. “IVCC’s curriculum prepared me well for NIU,” Rodrigues said.

• A pledge to work collaboratively with all Illinois community colleges as part of an Illinois Community College Board initiative titled CAREER (Comprehensive Agreement Regarding the Expansion of Educational Resources).

Board members learned:

• IVCC’s student loan default rate for 2017 was 8.9 percent, the best it has been in three years and lower than the 2016 state average. “This is a credit to our financial aid staff, including director Eric Johnson and his predecessor Patty Williamson,” said Corcoran.

• The Feb. 26 Edible Car Contest attracted LaSalle-Peru High School, St. Bede Academy, DePue High School, LaMoille High School, Putnam County and Trinity Catholic junior highs, and many IVCC students, faculty and staff.

• The March 6 Career Expo at IVCC drew more than 1,000 students from three high schools and 13 grade schools. Among the 75 career sessions facilitated by 80 faculty, staff, students and outside presenters were law enforcement, manufacturing, banking, marketing, health care, social services and building and construction trades.

• The annual employee recognition event is Friday, April 17, at Grand Bear Lodge. Social hour begins at 4 and presentation of awards at 5:30.

• Contracts were renewed for the

2020-21 academic year with non-tenured faculty Jessie Bouxsein and Amber Robertson, nursing; Nicholas Fish, EMS; Amber Fox, accounting; David Garrison, mathematics; Stephen Gibson, industrial maintenance and electricity; Kevin Hermes, criminal justice; Kathryn Lillie, agriculture; Richard Marko, automotive; Nancy McDonnell, cybersecurity; Kaity Ritter, medical assistant; and Anthony Sondgeroth, welding.

• Grace Norris has been hired as electronic resources librarian and Katharine Young as help desk specialist.

• Diane Kreiser, a 30-year business office employee and currently the interim payroll and benefits coordinator, will retire Aug. 31. In her retirement letter, Kreiser wrote, “It has been a great experience working at IVCC. I will take with me many special memories and friendships. I have been a champion of IVCC since I was a student and will continue to be one.”

• Another nearly three-decade employee, Katherine Sramek of the admissions office, will retire July 31. “I’ve never regretted for a minute choosing to work in education,” Sramek wrote. “Choosing to retire is both exciting and scary; nevertheless, it is time to spend more time with my grandchildren, in my flower gardens and travel.”

PUBLIC ACTION TO DELIVER SHELTER

People with a home can self-isolate; shelter cannot isolate patient

People who have a home can receive instructions from their physician, and those instructions may be to stay home.

The homeless shelter cannot house people who have the virus. The shelter may need to notify the hospital and make arrangements to safely deliver the individual or family to the emergency room.

The shelter staff keeps areas clean and is always prepared to help people who have colds. Through the years, they have dealt with situations where they have needed to get help for people who have flu, hepatitis and pneumonia who may go to the hospital and receive instructions from there.

For common colds and allergies, the shelter keeps over-the-counter medications to help with common symptoms.

In the case of COVID-19, the illness caused by the novel coronavirus, PADS is not set up to isolate a patient or family.

“This isn’t their home; we don’t have isolation capabilities,” Alcorn said.

Alcorn said LaSalle County Health Department on March 13 still was working out potential emergency isolation plans for the shelter, as well as the jail.

If a homeless individual (or family) tests positive, the health department will take care of the isolation.

“They’re really scrambling to figure this out,” Alcorn said.

Normally, prior to this, if someone is sick, “we send them to the doctor or ER and let them get medication or dosed and let them stay in to recover.”

(The shelter closes in the middle of the day and generally asks that homeless people go to work or seek work during the day.)

PADS’ shelter has 55 beds in Ottawa and, after an addition that opened this fall, 66 beds in Peru.

The Peru facility has four rooms designed for families.

OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College is taking precautions to guard against coronavirus transmission, and most instructors are prepared to offer instruction online if necessary, President Jerry Corcoran informed board members March 12.

“So much of what we hear and read regarding the coronavirus is alarming and new ground for many of us, not just at IVCC, but across the Illinois Community College system,” he said.

“We will continue monitoring the situation closely and will do everything we can to lessen the likelihood of it affecting programs and services, or having the virus spread

throughout the district.”

“Our facilities staff is on top of the situation and quietly engaged in deep-cleaning,” Corcoran said. “And Academic Affairs has a strategy in place to supplement the college’s emergency response plan.”

The plan provides a framework or “shell” faculty can use to move courses online.

“Fortunately, the majority of faculty use Blackboard as a platform to deliver instruction — there is a Blackboard shell for all courses,” he said.

“We are reaching out to faculty to update those shells and providing basic training to those new to Blackboard.”

What happens if someone with coronavirus shows up at the homeless shelters in Ottawa and Peru?

Public Action to Deliver Shelter executive director Carol Alcorn and her staff received new instructions from LaSalle County Health Department on March 13, and she expects more specific details to come in as the days go by.

But she does know one thing: “We are not going to close. These people have nowhere else to go,” Alcorn said on March 15.

Approximately 30 percent of clients needing the shelter stay there for one to two months, and about 70

percent show up as circumstances force them to. For that majority, the stays usually last for less than three weeks.

So, PADS receives new individuals and families regularly.

The state has ordered PADS staff to interview any new clients or people who were out for a while and returning. The questions include whether they have been out of the country or exposed to the virus. And for all clients, the homeless shelter will monitor whether they have a fever and respiratory issues.

“If the answer is yes, you need to contact medical professionals immediately,” Alcorn said.

Testing must be done by medical professionals.

People who own or rent a home who may have symptoms, including fever, should call their family doctor rather than immediately showing up at the emergency room or walking into a doctor’s office and potentially spreading the virus to others.

Elderly, those with health conditions most at risk Coronavirus also poses hazard to heart disease, patients with diabetes

BY DEREK BARICHELLO Shaw Media Heritage Woods, a nursing home in Ottawa, is stopping all visitors at its entrance.

Anyone entering is being screened for respiratory symptoms, such as fever, sore throat or coughs; asked whether they’ve traveled outside of the country in the last two or three weeks; and questioned if they’ve been in contact with COVID-19.

Only visitors essential to a patient’s needs are allowed in.

“We’re taking every precaution,” said Peggy Morgan, administrator at Heritage Woods of Ottawa.

The measures taken at Heritage Woods are similar to those being put in place across other Illinois nursing homes, after coronavirus turned up among residents or workers in at least 11 elder-care facilities in the Seattle area, leading to more than a

dozen deaths in one nursing home.

The elderly are among those who are at a higher risk of getting “very sick” from COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

“The No. 1 thing we’re trying to do is limit possible exposure,” Morgan said, noting the nursing home has amped up cleaning procedures, staff training and awareness of such things as washing hands for its residents.

The CDC also warns those with cancer or serious chronic medical conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes and lung disease, are at greater risk.

According to a World Health Organization report, fatality rates are higher in patients with underlying conditions. Those with heart diseases had a rate of 13.2 percent; diabetes 9.2 percent; hypertension 8.4 percent; respiratory disease 8 percent and cancer 7.6 percent — compared to 1 percent for healthy adults.

Health officials warn smokers are more susceptible to coronavirus.

Smoking affects the immune system in the airways, lung tissue and throughout the body. This reduces natural protection against infections.

Individuals with autoimmune conditions, as opposed to immunodeficiency conditions, are due to an overactive immune condition. The treatments for autoimmune conditions may involve the use of immunosuppressants, such as prednisone, and increase the risks. Those individuals should contact their doctors about preventative measures.

There is no evidence children are more susceptible, according to the CDC. In fact, the agency said most confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported from China have occurred in adults.

Still, school districts are following daily updates from the Illinois Department of Public Health and county agencies. The biggest message going out to parents is if children or staff are sick, stay home.

“The best thing students and staff can do is what they should always do: wash their hands with soap and warm water, cover coughs and sneezes, use tissues, and stay home if they are sick,” said Craig Ortiz, superintendent of Morris High School District.

The Illinois Department of Public Health reported there are not enough

scientific reports regarding the susceptibility of pregnant women to the virus. Pregnant women experience immunologic and physiologic changes that might make them more susceptible to viral respiratory infections, including COVID-19.

While the virus can make anyone sick, “if you are at higher risk for serious illness from COVID-19 because of your age or because you have a serious long-term health problem, it is extra important for you to take actions to reduce your risk of getting sick with the disease,” said Melissa Edwards, health promotion and emergency preparedness coordinator at the DeKalb County Health Department.

It is especially important for higher risk individuals to:

• Stock up on supplies, including prescription medication. Have at least 30 days of medicine on hand.

• Take everyday precautions to keep space between yourself and others.

• When you go out in public, keep away from others who are sick, limit close contact and wash your hands often.

• Avoid crowds as much as possible.

Illinois State Museum, affiliated sites shut down amid social distancing

The museum will work with IDNR, IDPH and Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s administration to “assess the optimal time to reopen facilities,” according to the release.

Last week, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield separately announced the closure of its facility to the public. All public events planned at the ALPLM through April 10 are canceled, and additional events may be

canceled as circumstances warrant, according to the museum’s Facebook page.

Social distancing efforts are aimed at slowing the spread of the virus by limiting contact among large groups of people. Pritzker has also issued orders to close schools, restaurants and bars with a tentative reopening date set for March 31.

There had been 93 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in 13 counties in Illinois as of Sunday, but that number is growing each day and health experts have warned it is artificially low due to lack of national testing kits.

“The time for persuasion and public appeals is over,” Pritzker said at a Sunday news conference on the spread of the virus.

SPRINGFIELD — All state parks, fish and wildlife areas, recreational areas and historic sites are closed until further notice in the latest social distancing measures taken

by Illinois officials to combat the spread of coronavirus disease, COVID-19.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources announced the closure of the facilities in a news release Mon-

day, noting all events scheduled at any of the sites are canceled as well.

The department will “work tirelessly with the governor’s office and the Illinois Department of Public Health to provide information as to the schedule for safely reopening our facilities,” according to a news release.

The Illinois State Museum and its affiliated branches will be closed as well.

“What our patrons love most about our facilities — the opportunity to interact (with) exhibits, patrons and staff — also is of greatest concern at this time,” Illinois State Museum Director Cinnamon Catlin-Legutko said in a news release.

“We know this decision is the best course of action to ensure the safety of patrons who visit our facilities as

Scholarship established in memory of Trevor Wehner at IVCC OGLESBY — The parents of Trevor Wehner have established a scholarship in his memory at Illinois Valley Community College.

Wehner, of Sheridan, graduated from IVCC in 2017 before transferring to Northern Illinois University. He was killed Feb. 15, 2019 — his senior year at Northern — in a shooting at an Aurora factory where he was interning.

The Trevor Melvin Wehner Scholarship is being established through the IVCC Foundation by Trevor’s parents, Bonnie Rich and Tom Wehner, both of Sheridan. In addition, an anonymous donor contributed $1,000 to the scholarship fund.

The Wehners will award $1,000 each to a female and male student annually for tuition, books and related expenses. Applicants must demonstrate significant involvement in school activities and community service. The scholarship will be awarded for the first time in September.

Trevor was a 2015 graduate of Serena High School before earning A.S. and A.A. degrees from IVCC. He received a B.S. in Human Resources

Management from NIU in 2019.

Unfortunately, the bachelor’s degree was awarded posthumously as his life was tragically taken in a workplace shooting on his first day as an intern. Wehner, just 21, was one of five people killed that day.

Trevor is remembered for a smile that would light up a room and for making friends easily with everyone — young and old alike. He loved sports, especially baseball, and made his mark as a pitcher at IVCC. “Trevor was a blast … so much fun to be around,” said IVCC baseball coach Jason Goode. “A great sense of humor and very laid back. But he was also very focused and had a plan for what he was going to do with his life.”

No. 2020-P-44 NOTICE TO CLAIMANTS NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN of the death of WILLIS B. ALLEN. Letters of office as Independent Executor were issued on February 24, 2020 to CLAUDIA JEAN KIMES, 623 W. Bluff Street, Streator, Illinois 61364 and whose attorney is M.G. GULO & ASSOCIATES, LTD., 123 S. Monroe Street, Streator, Illinois 61364.

The estate will be administered without Court supervision, unless under Section 5/28-4 of the Probate Act (Ill. Compiled Stat.

1992, Ch. 755, Par. 5/28-4) any interested person terminates independent administration at any time by mailing or delivering a petition to terminate to the Clerk.

Copies of any claim filed with the Clerk must be mailed or delivered to the estate representative and to the attorney within 10 days after it has been filed with the Clerk.
