Our actual 100th anniversary will occur on November 4, 2021; however, throughout the year, watch for special announcements and activities as we honor and share our history as we work to map our future growth and success. While the Village of Westmont is five square miles and home to about 25,000 residents, our Westmont Park District offers over 150 acres of park property throughout the Village for use by all ages all year round. In addition, in 2020, Westmont welcomed the brand new FMC Natatorium at Ty Warner Park, an Olympic-caliber swimming facility for all ages. Westmont also benefits greatly from our high-performance local community school districts serving our children from

preschool through post-high school levels. In support of our schools, our Westmont Public Library is second to none, offering a fully updated facility, latest technology, fantastic staff and programming for all ages. Annual Westmont Community Awards WESTMONT RECOGNIZES EXCELLENCE IN THE COMMUNITY The Westmont Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau (WCCTB) originally scheduled the Annual Westmont Community Awards Dinner in April 2020 but had to cancel the event due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Later in the year, the WCCTB held individual recognition sessions for each of the award recipients. Photos of the recognitions are available in the Photo Gallery on Westmontchamber.com. Thank you and congratulations to all of the award nominees and finalists.

The 2019 Dick Busse Business-of-the-Year Award recognizes a Chamber business that has excelled in community service, business promotion, civic responsibility and contributions to the betterment of the Chamber and the Village of Westmont. The nominees for this award were: Dynamic Perception Dance Company, Hilton Chicago/Oak Brook Hills Resort & Conference Center, Papa Passeroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Family Restaurant, and Urban Veterinary Associates. Cass Avenue) in recognition of their high level of community interaction and support. The 2019 Roger Westman Presidentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Award recognizes an individual who has performed outstanding service to the Chamber and the Westmont Community. The Roger Westman Presidentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s award was presented to Lennie Bowen by Westmont Chamber President Steve Wozny. 2019 Westmont Citizen-of-the-Year Award recognizes individuals that reside in Westmont and that have demonstrated exceptional community involvement and leadership. Mayor Gunter noted â&#x20AC;&#x153;we have seven wonderful people nominated for the Westmont Citizen of the Year that have made such a positive impact to the success of Westmont.â&#x20AC;? The nominees for this award were: Marie Charlton, Linda Liddle, Jim Long, Kerry Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Connor, Christa Stanulis, Tracey Valerio Spotts, and Wally VanBuren. hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lot of activity going on in Westmont these days. And it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t show any signs of slowing down.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been a record year for permits being issued for projects,â&#x20AC;? said Larry Forssberg, executive director of Westmont Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Bureau. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The record low interest rates are giving developers and homebuyers confidence to pursue borrowing money for projects, whether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s to buy a home or start a multimilliondollar development.â&#x20AC;? Construction even continued during the COVID-19 pandemic despite some minor delays in acquiring construction materials. "This amazing aquatic facility will bring tens of thousands of guests to Westmont and an annual basis, this boost in visitors will translate into additional dollars going into our local economy at hotels, restaurants, retailers and maybe even our Westmont Auto Mile," Forssberg said. The 60,000-square-foot aquatic center includes a nine-lane, 50-meter Olympic-size competition pool with spectator seating for 1,200 and a 25-yard training pool for swim lessons and competition warm-up.

MARKET CENTER

This fall, Market Center opened at 63rd Street and Cass Avenue in the village’s southwest business district on the former site of an old shopping center. Originally set to open in July, the opening was pushed back to September due to COVID-19. Tenants include Starbucks, LA Fitness, Raising Cane’s, Mariano’s and Burger King. “The center has gone from what was an outdated eyesore to bringing a brand new sense of vibrancy to that area,” Forssberg said. “There’s a TIF district in place to help revitalize the southwest business district by reworking old parcels and bringing them back to life.”

DOWNTOWN HOUSING

After years of being a dining and shopping hub, soon downtown Westmont will be able to add residential housing to its list of attributes. Crews recently broke ground for Quincy Station, a new residential complex in downtown Westmont. Opening in 2021, the five-story building will include 94 luxury apartments. The building will include a common amenity space/club room at the

upper floor of the building with an outdoor terrace overlooking Quincy Street and downtown Westmont.

MARKING 100 YEARS of Westmont history

t was commercial ventures, specifically bricks and stones, which provided the historical foundation for a thriving community. Following the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, brick manufacturers were eager to take advantage of the area’s natural resources to fulfill the huge demand for bricks for the rebuilding of Chicago. The Chicago-Aurora branch of the Chicago-Burlington & Quincy Railroad,

completed in 1864, provided the necessary transportation making current day Westmont the perfect location for William L. Gregg to establish his brick-making company, Excelsior Press Brick Manufacturing

Company. The company employed 120 people and produced 70,000 bricks per day. The rail stop known as Gregg’s Milk Station was a popular flag-stop on the line as cars picked up milk from local farmers.

n The Village of Westmont was incorporated on November 4, 1921.

Land developer Arthur McIntosh began buying property in the area in 1920, hoping to found a town where those wanting to build could buy land for as little as $5 down.

In 1921, the Village of Westmont was incorporated. Being the highest location west of Chicago along the railroad, its name was a natural fit. Vince Pastor was chosen as the first village board president and held office for two years. On November 4, 2021, Westmont will celebrate its 100th anniversary of incorporation. To celebrate, the Village of Westmont created the Westmont 100th Anniversary Committee. The committee, chaired

estmont is a senior-friendly community and it shows. Just a few years back, the Westmont Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau started the Senior Resource Committee (SRC). SRC meets from 8- 9 a.m. on the first Friday of the month (except holidays). SRC represents a wide variety of Westmont businesses dedicated to providing seniors with the services they need the most. The Village has quality independent and assisted living in a welcoming rental community with an emphasis on wellness and socialization. There are a full range of services and residence options, from independent living to memory care services. For those who prefer to age in place, there are care-giver services that specialize in in-home care for the elderly provided by professional caregivers who assist with daily tasks, such as meal prep, pet care, medication reminders and errands, while promoting dignity and independence. Unfortunately, with COVID-19 being a factor as the calendar turns toward 2021, specific dates for beloved events are difficult to lock in, and it’s unclear if every event we anticipate will occur in 2021. together at community-wide events, however the health and safety of our community is priority number one. Nevertheless, we are committed to seeking solutions.
