Also, experience the new West Quincy Streetscape and outdoor dining project completed in 2023 – this space will provide lots of outdoor dining and includes two new restaurants to enjoy. Westmont also benefits greatly from our high-performance community school districts serving our children from preschool through post-high school levels. WESTMONT HONORS EXCELLENCE IN THE COMMUNITY

he Westmont Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau (WCCTB) hosted the Annual Westmont Community Awards Dinner to recognize local individuals and businesses. The Awards Dinner was held on April 24, 2023, at the Hilton Chicago/ Oak Brook Hills Resort and Conference Center in Westmont. The Westmont Chamber Community Awards Dinner is an annual tradition in Westmont designed to provide a special opportunity to pause and recognize the many wonderful volunteers, activities and businesses that work to make Westmont a great place to live, work and visit. WCCTB President Becky Rheintgen noted that “over 190 Westmont area residents, business owners and civic leaders attended the Westmont Chamber Community Awards program to demonstrate support for our community. The Westmont Chamber along with the Village of Westmont, American Legion Post No. 338, Rotary Club of Westmont, Peoples Resource Center, Westmont Automile and the Knights of Columbus are collectively proud to recognize the individuals and businesses that help contribute to the growth and success of Westmont, in a manner that keeps Westmont a great place to live, work and visit.” During the awards program, the following special community recognitions and awards were presented:

n The 2022 Dick Busse Business-ofthe-Year Award recognizes a Chamber business that has excelled in community service, business promotion, civic responsibility and contributions to the betterment of the Chamber and the Village of Westmont. The Dick Busse Business-of-the-Year award was presented to FMC Natatorium at Ty Warner Park in recognition of their high level of community interaction and support. n The 2022 Roger Westman President’s Award recognizes an individual who has performed outstanding service to the Chamber and the Westmont Community. The Roger Westman President’s award was presented to Jay Rushford, Director of Operations at Uncle Bub’s BBQ and Catering by Westmont Chamber Past President Alison Clemens. n 2022 Westmont Citizen-of-the-Year Award recognizes individuals that reside in Westmont and that have demonstrated exceptional community involvement and leadership. Mayor Gunter noted, “We have three wonderful people nominated for the Westmont Citizen of the Year that have made such a positive impact to the success of Westmont.” The nominees for this award were: Daniel Buczkowski, Dave Reisetter and Tracey Valerio Spotts. The Westmont Citizen-of-the-Year award was presented to Tracey Valerio Spotts by Westmont Mayor Ron Gunter.

n The 2022 Educator-of-the-Year Award recognizes a local educator for their outstanding efforts in their field and to the betterment of the Village of Westmont. The Educator-of-the-Year award was presented to Jennifer Burisek from Westmont Junior High School and Jessica Paulsen from Holy Trinity Catholic School. n The 2022 Westmont Public Servant Award recognizes a member of the village staff who demonstrates exemplary public service to the community. The nominees were Jim Fitzgerald, Angela Whitehead, and Cindy Westra. The Westmont Public Service Award was awarded to Jim Fitzgerald, Westmont Fire Department. n The Rotary Club of Westmont Special Community Service Award was presented to Irv Kaplan and Ruth Kaplan in recognition of their exceptional level of community service and volunteer work. The presenter was Harold Barry with participation from Westmont Rotary Club members. n American Legion Post No. 338 presented its w Americanism Award to Douglas Carmichael. n The Peoples Resource Center presented its first ever “Outstanding Neighbor” Award to Ron Niemer. The award was presented by CEO Jeni Fabian and Erin Keyser Norton.

“Restaurant Week has been a huge hit for us,” explained Larry Forssberg, Executive Director of the Westmont Chamber of Commerce. Restaurant Week also highlights the incredible diversity in Westmont’s food scene, with restaurants serving up a wide array of cuisine from Greek to Italian, Mexican, Chinese and American fare. Craving fried chicken, handrolled pasta or a fusion of cultures there is incredible cuisine to explore. And seeing hungry customers enjoy great food is one of the highlights to any day, Link explains.

“It’s always the best to see customers smile. The best part of any day,” he said. From a family dinner together to a place where the whole hockey team can dine between games, Link said local businesses work hard to answer the call. Westmont Excels in Senior Care & Dementia Support

estmont was the first community in DuPage County to earn the designation as Dementia Friendly in 2020, and it remains at the forefront of providing support and resources to residents with dementia and their caregivers. Dementia is the term used to describe one’s loss of memory and an impairment of thinking, with disease such as Alzheimer’s under the umbrella of diagnoses. Dementia can affect a wide range of ages in adults and lead to additional behavioral impairments and impede the ability to care for one’s self.

The Westmont Chamber of Commerce Senior Resource Committee, a collaboration among those in the business community and representatives of the Westmont Public Library, the Westmont Park District as well

as the Westmont police and fire departments, helped the village to earn the designation as Dementia Friendly and continue programming and resources to maintain the title. Mary Ferguson is a committee member who helped bring the designation to Westmont. She first connected to the group through her work with a local senior care facility, but she also had a very personal connection to helping Westmont become Dementia Friendly. Ferguson’s father suffered from dementia and she saw first-hand how it affected him and the family of caregivers. In creating a Dementia Friendly village, she and the committee have worked on a multi-faceted approach to assist those with dementia, their caregivers and to help local businesses and organizations understand the condition and how they can aid.

In fall 2023, the Memory Café launched in Westmont, providing a safe space where a caregiver can bring their loved ones and gather in a supportive setting to talk, share resources.

The village created an email address, DementiaFriendlyWestmont@ westmont.il.gov, which residents can contact to seek information and request a resource guide.

“It’s a safe, neutral place for those with dementia and their caregiver can be around others experiencing similar experiences,” Ferguson said.

“We’re here to help and it’s a very good starting point,” Ferguson said.

She continued, “With dementia, as it progresses, the world can become very small as the caregiver will find it harder to go places, to leave their loved ones alone. It’s so important to me that we let the caregiver know there are safe places, there is someone to talk to. To say, ‘You’re not alone for this journey.’” The Westmont Public Library has been very active providing ongoing free educational programs, from hosting speakers to sharing resources. In Westmont, first responders have been trained on methods to approach someone with dementia.

Westmont is a leader among other communities in DuPage and throughout the state seeking to create Dementia Friendly designations and to support residents and caregivers. Ferguson said she and the task force still see many more opportunities to expand the support provided to those with dementia and their caregivers. She added there’s tremendous energy among the committee members as they seek new avenues and build on the village’s Dementia Friendly support and resources. “I do think as the word gets out, people will feel more comfortable coming and realizing they’re not alone,” Ferguson said.

Westmont Volunteers Make Westmont Community Events a Success

t takes a village to make Westmont one of the best places to live, and that’s evident through its incredible network of opportunities for residents to give back and support their neighbors. “We’re always looking to get more people involved in community organizations because it’s the lifeblood of our community and a great way to be involved and make new friends,” said Larry Fossberg, Executive Director of the Westmont Chamber of Commerce Taking an active role in the community is a great way to give back, make new friendships and even take part in special events. The nonprofit organization Westmont Special Events plans many community events including Taste of Westmont, Cruisin’ Nights, community arts programming and even a few pub crawls each year. Additionally, the

group collaborates with other village organizations to present events like the annual Holly Days and Wicked West Fest, both being events offering multiple activities by several community organizations over a period of several weeks (October through year-end). “Community events require the help of a lot of volunteers,” said Larry McIntyre, Special Events Founder. “Whether someone wants to help for just a single event, or assist with event planning throughout the year, all help is welcome and appreciated.” Westmont is home to a long tradition of community service. The Westmont American Legion started in 1924 and the Westmont Lions Club received its charter in 1936 and they are two of the oldest community organizations serving Westmont. From fundraising for local scholarships to service to the community,

the Westmont Lions Club brings people together in service and friendship. The Rotary Club of Westmont also supports community needs going back to the 1970’s. we are fortunate to have the Knights of Columbus that support so many community needs each year through a delicious fish fry and sandwiches grilled and served during the car shows in the summer. Check out the list of community organization’s that serve Westmont and DuPage, its very impressive group of resources and people that care. Please keep in mind that service is the opportunity to give back, but when it comes to serving the community, whether at a local school, church or civic organization, there is plenty to be gained from meeting new people, working together and supporting events that draw people to the community and make Westmont a place everyone can enjoy.
