Welcome to the 44th Autumn on Parade festival Welcome to Autumn on Parade! This year’s festival is Oct. 4-5 in scenic Oregon, IL and if Mother Nature cooperates, visitors will be in for a treat as they view the beautiful Rock River Valley draped in fall colors. Here’s a short rundown on what this year’s festival offers. The heart of Autumn on Parade is its Farmer’s Market and Craft Fair, located on the Ogle County Courthouse Square in downtown Oregon. Here, craft booths surround the historic Ogle County Courthouse. The booths offer handmade, homemade and homegrown items as well as many other kinds of goodies. Not a crafter? Don’t despair...there is something for everyone. On Saturday, antique tractors will be on display at Oregon Park East, just across the Rock River.

Autumn on Parade President Marseyne Snow

Owners of Olivers, Farmalls, and Deeres are more than willing to share the history of their tractors. Next door to the tractor show is the car, truck, and motorcycle classic. The Oregon Lion’s Club is again coordinating this special show. Lunch will also be available on site. Visitors can also tour the Chana School on Saturday, also located at Park East. This unique two-room school, built in 1883, is celebrating

its 131st birthday this year!! Following this year’s theme “Autumn of Super Heroes, entertainers on Saturday on the Courthouse Square will include Wonder Woman and Captain America just to name a few. Watch out...you may see Spiderman also strolling around the courthouse lawn. On both days, the Fun Zone, located just north of the Courthouse Square, offers a place for kids to burn off some energy. A Boot Camp Challenge obstacle course will be among other adventurous attractions. Admission provides all-day use. Hungry? Don’t forget to stop by the Food Court, which includes a variety of choices from booths run by local notfor-profit organizations. Want to take a trip back to the Renaissance? Stronghold Camp and Retreat Center, once the home of Chicago Daily News owner Walter

Strong, will host its annual Olde English Faire both days. Tours of the Stronghold Castle will also be available as well as food and entertainment. Admission is charged for this event which is located about two miles north of Oregon, along Ill. 2. Sunday morning starts with a 5K race and a one-mile fun run. At 1 p.m. on Sunday the Harvest Time Parade,

featuring 100-plus units, makes its way through the downtown and past the courthouse square. The Jesse White Tumblers and South Shore Drill Team are just two of the crowd favorites returning this year. South Shore will also perform a post parade show at the conclusion of the parade on Jefferson Street, in front of the Oregon Library. Wrap up the weekend at the AOP Duck Dash. Hundreds

of ducks will be released for their swim to the finish line. Why not adopt one and cheer it on and maybe win some cash? And here’s the best part— with the exception of the Olde English Faire, Fun Zone, and 5K there is no admission charge for our events. (As it has been since 1970, Autumn on Parade continues to be organized and operated by community volunteers.)

Have a super time at the farmers market, craft fair Want to meet a superhero? You can. Stroll around the Ogle County Courthouse Square and through the city streets. There you will find 130+ crafters at the 44th annual Autumn on Parade. Vendors will be selling a variety of fabric, wooden, and metal items. So what makes them superheroes? “Our crafters are great ‘upcyclers’,” said Laury

Edlund, show chairman. “They reinvent many cast off materials into wonderful new pieces. Vintage trade beads become fashionable jewelry pieces. Wine bottles become wind chimes. Scraps of material is made into table runners, bowls, and rag rugs. “And who would have thought used pop cans could become accessory pieces,” said Edlund. “Be on the look out for other upcycled and

sustainable items.” Amongst the handmade wares visitors will discover homemade treats that will delight humans and pets alike. Dips, sauces, baked goods, and candy are sure to please. “And don’t forget the puppy chow for your pet and yourself,” said Edlund, noting that both varieties will be available during the event. Crafter booths will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. “Complete your stroll by taking home a pumpkin or two,” said Edlund. “Homegrown produce will be available from several of our vendors. Bright red apples, patty pan squash, and gourds all mean that fall is in the air.” A list of vendors and map of the festival grounds appears on pages 10 and 11 in this newspaper.

Above, the farmers’ market and craft show is located around the historic Ogle County Courthouse in downtown Oregon. At left, baked items are also sold.

Stronghold is the camping and retreat ministry of Blackhawk Presbytery, Presbyterian Church (USA). It is situated on 360 acres of woodlands on the bluffs overlooking the Rock River.

When not hosting the Faire, the Center offers facilities for overnight retreats, summer camps, leadership development programs and outdoor education programming. Walter Strong, owner and publisher of the Chicago Daily News, and his family built the Castle as a vacation home in 1928. It was purchased by a group of Presbyterian churches in 1962 and is the centerpiece of the retreat center. Tour historic Chana School Oct. 4 Reading, writing, and arithmetic are just three staples awaiting Autumn on Parade visitors at the historic Chana School, located on River Road in Oregon Park East. This unique two-room school, built in 1883, is celebrating its 131st birthday this year!! It will be open for tours on Saturday, Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Costumed docents will greet visitors inside the school. The school originally stood in the village of Chana seven miles from Oregon and was set to be torn down in 1998. But a group of local citizens formed the Chana School Foundation to move the building to a new location, restore it to its original appearance, and operate it as a living history museum.

“This fairy tale story began with a building that was going to be destroyed, because it was in the way of progress. It had been used in a variety of ways, since the closing of the Chana School District in the late 1960s,” said Connie Stauffer, who along with Chana native Duke Thomas, spearheaded the school’s move and restoration. “Little had been done to keep the old building standing. It had not been painted in 60 years. Was it an eyesore? Yes! But we had a vision of what the old Chana School could do for education and history of our area if it were saved and restored.” After five years of fund raising, grant writing and thousands of hours of volunteer labor, the Chana School Museum opened in the Fall of 2003.

In December 2005, the school was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. “This was an amazing recognition for the school and to everyone who had volunteered their energy to help make the school a landmark—not only for Oregon, but for the state of Illinois and our nation,” said Stauffer. “There are only two schools with two classrooms on the National Register from Illinois and the Chana School is the only two-room wooden school on the register from Illinois.” This unique V-shaped building is not your typical rural schoolhouse. Inside visitors will find cloak rooms with curved walls, decorative pressed tin walls and ceilings and fancy carved woodwork painted in

Victorian colors. One classroom has been restored to how it would have looked in the mid 1890s complete with period desks, pump organ, antique lithographs and a decorative wood stove. The other classroom contains exhibits about life in the late 1800s and information about rural education in northern Illinois. The Chana School is open by appointment by calling 815-732-4714 or 815-7322447. The school offers simulation field trips for school classes throughout the year. The museum can also be used for weddings, meetings, The historic Chana School will be open for tours on Saturday, Oct. 4. and workshops.

Lowden estate to be site of Chamber reception The Oregon Chamber of Commerce’s Autumn on the Vine event, held annually during Autumn on Parade weekend, will add some flair with a few new twists. Descendants of Governor Frank O. Debbie Dickson, director of the Oregon Chamber of Commerce. “Having the opportunity to showcase a piece of Oregon’s history not normally open to the public and raise funds for a community project during the process is the icing on the cake!” The Chamber Reception will be held on Saturday, Oct. 4 from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. Tickets go on sale Sept. 5 with a limited number available for this event. Event tickets are $40 per person, or $75 per couple. The cost of the ticket includes
