Huntley, Jacobs each send set of siblings to state By JOHN WILKINSON
jwilkinson@shawmedia.com BARRINGTON – Two sets of wrestling brothers – Huntley’s Sam and Zach Spencer and Jacobs’ Jake and Beau Harrier – took similar, difficult, paths through the Class 3A Barrington Sectional on Saturday, and all four emerged headed for Champaign. “It’s like picture perfect,” Jacobs coach Gary Conrad said after the second Harrier qualified. “It’s like a Disney movie right now.” The brothers were among 10 locals who qualified for the state tournament by placing in the top four of their brackets at the sectional. Also qualifying were Huntley’s Josh Stenger (120 pounds), David Ferrante (152) and Juan Quiroz (160), McHenry’s Jaden Glauser (170) and Jake Leske (182) and DundeeCrown’s Chase Raap (182). At 113, Jake Harrier was the first local to secure his spot at state, but it wasn’t necessarily easy, needing overtime in his championship semifinal to win by decision. He went on to finish runner-up.
Scoreboard Local state qualifiers from the Barrington Sectional (weight class in parentheses): Dundee-Crown: Chase Raap (182). Huntley: Sam Spencer (106), Josh Stenger (120), Zach Spencer (126), David Ferrante (152), Juan Quiroz (160). Jacobs: Jake Harrier (113), Beau Harrier (120). McHenry: Jaden Glauser (170), Jake Leske (182). His brother, on the other hand, had to come through the consolation draw. Beau (120) pinned twice to start the day then needed a 5-2 decision in the consolation semifinals to secure his state place. When time expired on the senior’s win, Conrad almost shook the boys’ dad, Jim Harrier, out of the mat-side chairs they were sitting in as coaches. “I’m the proudest dad in the world right now,” Jim Harrier said. “He’s worked his butt off, and it’s paid off.” It was especially sweet for Beau after he came up short in the sectional con-
solation semifinals a year ago at Barrington. “I just wasn’t going to let it happen again,” Beau said he was thinking. “That’s really it, honestly.” Both Spencer brothers had to come back after losing their championship semifinals Saturday morning. Sam Spencer (106) narrowly lost in overtime to drop down, but then won an 8-3 decision to book his first trip to state. “Honestly, it feels decent, but I expected that out of myself,” the freshman said. “I’m happy I’m a state qualifier, but now I’m going to go down there and place.” Zach Spencer (126) was down in the final minute of the match but got a takedown with 11 seconds left to win, 8-7, and secure a third consecutive trip to state. “Incredible. Really, the last two years don’t mean much compared to having [Sam] with me,” Zach Spencer said. “I mean, watching him make it to state, if it weren’t for the fact that I had a match coming up myself, I would have been crying right there. I had to suppress the
