McHenry Riverwalk mchenryriverwalk.org Running along Boone Creek from Green Street to Riverside Drive and the Fox River the McHenry Riverwalk brings together the distinct neighborhoods of McHenry’s downtown. Visitors can enjoy fine dining, a waterfront stroll and catch a movie within the Riverwalk district.

McHenry Zone Skate and Bike Park 330 Knox Drive, McHenry Located in Knox Park, the park offers a variety of ramps and rails and will challenge even the most experienced boarders and riders. Rules are posted at the park. Helmets are required for the safety of those using the facility.

McHenry County Conservation District www.mccdistrict.org Glacial Park A day’s adventure includes a trip to the

Lost Valley Visitor Center for a peek at changing exhibits, a stop in the Sandhill Study for trail maps, guide books, and activity pages, as well as update on upcoming featured programs, outdoor concerts or workshops. Glacial Park also allows plenty of do-it-yourself exploration opportunities including downloading the Glacial Park hiking app trekking the two-mile interpretive trail loop or using binoculars, guide books and viewing scopes on the outdoor treetop decks.

Prairie View Education Center Prairieview Education Center serves thousands of McHenry County residents annually by offering free and low-cost nature programs, youth field trips, summer camps, and school field trips. The facility hosts traveling exhibits, a reference library, and a family drop-in “Exploration Station.” This interactive room features hands-on activities to help children learn about the natural world.

Prairie Trail The entire 26 mile Prairie Trail travels from Algonquin to the Wisconsin State Line. The former Chicago and Northwestern railroad line, now takes cyclists and hikers through prairie, woodlands and alongside residential areas. The trail connects eight McHenry County communities, allowing for a safe and convenient means of travel. Along the way, the trail passes through many scenic areas including Glacial Park, Larsen Prairie, Sterne’s Woods, the Diverse City Prairie and over the Fox River.

Illinois State Parks www.dnr.illinois.gov/parks Chain O’ Lakes State Park Located in the heart of Illinois’ largest concentration of natural Lakes, Chain O’Lakes State Park is a water-oriented recreation area. The park offers 6,023 acres for campers, picnickers, hikers, bicyclists, horseback riders, hunters, anglers, and boaters. There are 6 miles of hike/bike trails and 8 miles of horse trails. You will find a boat rental concession with food service/camp store and horse rental concession. Camping

is popular at Chain O’Lakes, with more than 230 campsites, three cabins, and a youth group camp.

Moraine Hills State Park From fishing to hiking and biking - from lush habitat and rare plants to watching a wealth of wildlife - Moraine Hills State Park is home to a recreational bounty in northeast Illinois. Located 3 miles south of McHenry in McHenry County, the park is located near the Fox River and McHenry Dam, with about half of the park’s 2,200 acres composed of wetlands and lakes. Volo Blog If you’re looking for a truly unique outdoor adventure, head for Volo Bog State Natural Area in Lake County in northeastern Illinois. The site includes Volo Bog, the only quaking bog in Illinois, significant in that it exhibits all stages of bog succession. A floating mat of sphagnum moss, cattails and sedges surrounds an open pool of water in the center of the bog.
