NCMP’s Blommers claims 10th at state By Jocelyn Sheets Newton Daily News MARSHALLTOWN — It was her fastest time this season in a swimming pool which did not yield many exceptional times on Saturday. NCMP junior Lindsey Blommers was emotional following the 100-yard breaststroke race at Saturday’s 2017 Iowa Girls’ High School State Swimming and Diving Championships. “I was just thinking about the race plan as the first heat was finishing,” Blommers said. “This whole week we worked on my tempo. I feel like my tempo was a lot faster today. I felt strong through the race — it hurt a lot and Coach P (Sarah Patterson) always said it will hurt when you’re putting in the effort. It’s the best I could do today.” Blommers, who holds the NCMP Aquagirls’ records in the 100-yard and 100-meter breaststroke events, posted a season’s best 1 minute, 7.45 seconds. Her regional time was 1:07.64. Following the three heat races, Blommers placed 10th at the state meet. “She had a great swim. We worked on having quicker breakouts and coming off the walls quicker, and we saw that from Lindsey today,” NCMP assistant coach Jenny Jensen said. “It wasn’t quite the time she wanted but she’s one of the

hardest workers we have, and it will all work out for her.” Jensen said the Marshalltown YMCA/YWCA swimming pool was not the fastest

pool. She said with a few exceptions, there were not a lot of outstanding swims in Saturday’s state races. “Lindsey was right there in

her race. One of our goals was to move up spots in the standings, and she moved up two spots after coming in seeded 12th,” Jensen said. “It was a

long wait for her to swim today, but I believe it was worth it for her.” BLOMMERS | 8B

Third-ranked Pirates stymie eighth-ranked Hawks By Jocelyn Sheets Newton Daily News

Jocelyn Sheets/Daily News Lynnville-Sully football seniors gather around to accept the 2017 state playoff participant trophy after falling 30-0 to host Hudson in Friday’s Class A playoff quarterfinal game. The eighth-ranked Hawks finished 9-1.

HUDSON — Running the football pushed eighth-ranked Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks to the team’s first undefeated regular season since 1999, a first-round playoff victory and into a Class A quarterfinal game. “Our name brand — running the football — didn’t work tonight against a very good opponent. We couldn’t establish it like we wanted. Sometimes when you can’t get it rolling, you turn to other things,” Lynnville-Sully head coach Mike Parkinson said after the Hawks lost 30-0 to third-ranked Hudson on Friday night. “I thought our aerial attack was good. We just didn’t connect on some things. We handled the ball well with not many turnovers. But tonight, the better team won.” Lynnville-Sully used a rushing HAWKS | 8B

Dominant Hawks ruin Ohio State’s championship hopes By Troy Hyde Newton Daily News IOWA CITY — Sean Welsh made it sound so simple. “We had our best week of preparation all season,” said the Ohio native and starting offensive guard. “I think it does boil down to that. When you have that good week of practice it gives you the confidence to come out and play well regardless of who you are playing.” Who the Hawkeyes were playing was the mighty Ohio State. The thirdranked team in the country according to the Associated Press poll. A team averaging 46 points and 570 yards per game. None of that mattered inside a sold out Kinnick Stadium though. The Hawkeyes started their nearly-perfect night with an Amani Hooker pick six, Akrum Wadley had 158 total yards and Nate Stanley threw a

career-high five touchdowns. It all ended in a 55-24 Iowa blowout victory. “It was an outstanding effort,” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. “We came into this game heavy underdogs, and for good reason. Ohio State is a tremendous football team. Our guys believed in themselves. They played with great energy, great effort and played opportunistic football.” Iowa, which came into the game as 20-point underdogs, forced Heisman hopeful J.T. Barrett into four interceptions. He came into the game with just one pick in his first eight games. Josh Jackson tied a school-record with three interceptions, and the Hawkeyes (6-3 overall, 3-3 in Big Ten play) turned every mistake into points. The loss was just the second road defeat for Ohio State under head coach Urban Meyer. HAWKS | 2B
